Rate this book
In this sequel to "Momente in München", Dino travels up north to Hamburg, Germany's second largest city and home to one of the biggest ports in Europe.Fresh off the train, he stumbles over an apartment offer which seems too good to be true, and of course there is a catch. Coping with new neighbors and a strange dialect, he soon begins to wonder whether he bit off more than he can chew.Stroll through the city of Hamburg, learn about local sights and sounds, and improve your German effortlessly along the way! This book is designed to help beginners make the leap from studying isolated words and phrases to reading (and enjoying) naturally flowing German texts.Using simplified sentence structures and a very basic vocabulary, this collection of short stories is carefully crafted to allow even novice learners to appreciate and understand the intricacies of coherent German speech. Each chapter comes with a complete German-English dictionary, with a special emphasis on collocative phrases (high frequency word combinations), short sentences and expressions. By working with these “building blocks” instead of just single words, learners can accelerate their understanding and active usage of new material and make the learning process more fluid and fun.

Dino, will you ever learn to keep a job?

This series continues to be one of the best resources available for beginning German learners. Just the right amount of slang terms, idioms, and regional words to challenge the reader without totally overwhelming them.

Learning a new language can feel overwhelming, but "Learn German With Stories: Ahoi aus Hamburg" is a breath of fresh air for anyone looking to ditch the dry textbooks and improve their comprehension through side-splitting stories.

This book follows the hilarious misadventures of Dino, a character who could easily be your (slightly accident-prone) spirit animal. Dino's journey through Hamburg is packed with highjinks that will have you laughing out loud while simultaneously absorbing new German vocabulary and phrases.

The beauty of "Ahoi aus Hamburg" lies in its simplicity. The stories are crafted specifically for beginner learners with clear sentence structures and everyday language. This is the fifth book in the series and reading each subsequent book leads to noticeable improvement in comprehension.

Poor Dino, it's always so difficult for him. Poor us having to laugh so hard at him. What a delightful way to brush up German!

What lovely, charming books these are. I'd enjoy reading them even if I was completely fluent in German.

Ship in a Bottle, Fish on the Shore, the Unknown Beatles, and the Reeperbahn Festival on the (somewhat sterilized) Most Sinful Mile
Can a mile of sin be sterilized? Ach So! You can take a sailor out of the sea, but you can never take the sea out of the sailor.
"Du kannst einen Seemann aus der See nehmen, aber du kannst nie die See aus dem Seemann nehmen“, sagte Herr Eggebrecht und starrte auf das Flaschenschiff..."

This edition of Dino Learns German follows our Italienisch Dino up to the former Hanseatic city of Hamburg, a region of Europe with a lot of history over the past millennia as an important region for trade. The book explores a bit of the current way of life in the city, and a bit of history, like that the Beetles performed some of their first concerts there in Hamburg in the cellars on the Reeperbahn on the world's 'most sinful mile.' Of course they were mostly unknown still at that time.
"Wir saßen eine Weile still auf den Treppenstufen und schauten auf das Wasser. Die Sonne stieg immer höher und es wurde angenehm warm."

I enjoyed this book more than those before, since each book is a bit more challenging. The above quote is an example of what to expect in this edition. I read this in the Kindle and Audible formats for reading and listening comprehension. Graded Readers are an excellent tool for practicing your reading skills in a less frustrating text, while learning a bit of the regional geography and culture. In the next book, Dino heads home to Palermo for the holidays. But, I don't see how that could match some of the scenes in this book, where Dino works as a handyman in his WG apartment building. The characterizations that Andre Klein provides are rich and real.

As ever, these books are well balanced and readable, even for a beginner. I'm still enjoying the tales of Dino, he always makes me smile. I enjoyed learning about Hamburg too. Looking forward to starting the next one.

I continue to make my way through Klein's series of short stories under the banner of "Learn German with Stories" and am completely delighted with my experience. I am learning German and having a ball doing it because the characters and the cities/cultures that make up the stories are engaging and entertaining.

I cannot recommend this more enthusiastically. Herr Klein has apparently published still more titles and I plan to keep right on consuming them until I have read every one of them and am prepared to move on to the work of other authors in Deutsche.

Thanks so much, Andre!!

I really like this book for learning more German. However, Dino is starting to really frustrate me. He can't stick through things. Yes, things at this unbelievable job were hectic, but he didn't stick with it long enough (like everything else) to maybe figure out how to maybe set up some rules and boundaries. But good storytelling and some new words.

Dino'nun maceralarının devam ettiği bir kitap. Hamburg'a gelen Dino, Clara adlı kızın tavsiyesi üzerine bir pansiyona gider.

I am enjoying the "Learn German with Stories" collection so much! It is far easy to understand and keep the motivation high while reading is not a big deal, then it is possible to keep a fast pace when reading it without staying bored.

One interesting thing about the book, there are several words I have seen before when studying German but I couldn't memorise and learn them, now reading it in a proper context it is much simple to keep the knowledge.

I'd recommend for someone on A2 level who wants to improve vocabulary

Oh Dino you are a truly unlikeable fellow, but I suppose if you could keep a job or stay in one city for any amount of time there wouldn’t be nearly as many silly stories to tell.
An entertaining beginning German reading book. Even if you do spend most of it wanting to slap the protagonist upside the head for being so terribly irresponsible.

Excellent language learning books

It was great to follow the hapless Dino once again as he skids around Germany gaining, then losing jobs. Marvellous 😂

Since I am a beginner and my hearing is nicht that gut, I really need to see the words along with hearing the words. That would be a great help. Danke.

Ein bisschen mehr Mysterium (oder Rätsel, wenn Sie so wollen), ein bisschen mehr Wortspiel. Es wird immer besser!

I hope you just catched a few more words, meine lieben kommilitonen.

In "Ahoi aus Hamburg", Dino, our hapless Sicilian hero, arrives in Hamburg, only to be drawn into a nefarious conspiracy involving a young bartender, her aunt, and an apartment building filled with a diabolical cast of characters whose Lovecraftian machinations threaten to break Dino's tenuous grip on reality. Will Dino find a way out, or will his life spiral into coffee-addiction, fishmarket-stalking, and madness?

Readers of "Dino Lernt Deutsch" are faced with all-new horrors in this, André Klein's dark masterwork of grand guignol terror.

Seriously though, this is, in my view, one of André Klein's best: we get an informative taste of Hamburg with Klein's patented sense of humor, all while we acquire German at a comfortable pace, picking up new words and phrases almost effortlessly.

Dino is really growing on me. And these stories are getting funnier and more entertaining as we go, as well as more complex in terms of Grammatik and Vokabeln but I love it. I feel like my level has really been improving and I'm actually enjoyed the flow of Deutsch now (instead of viewing as a series of Grammatik rules).

I enjoy this series, though sometimes the percentage of unknown words were a bit high for me, breaking the lesefluss in this book.
