Victor Frankenstein was only trying to advance the cause of science. How could his experiment have produced such a terrible result? The creature's powers were superhuman. Was there any real chance that Victor could stop the monster before he murdered again?
I started to listen to this book on the plane, then while cleaning the house, I started to open and listen a lot. It began extremely intense and mostly the characters were a kind of people who were seeking a way of living a virtuous life. Frankenstein was a passionate person and he was trying to follow and find his own path. For me he was not a failure at all because he was dedicated to this goal and this was the most important part. He created his own creature, but not every creature will follow the rules of the owner. Most of times I felt his inner spirit and it was giving a strong message about how doing something special and tangible for the life. I really enjoyed this book, it gave me some emotions especially strong feelings which we can’t describe in the words or in our minds. For me also it sparked a desire to go on a sea voyage.
This was an engaging, abridged version for my students. Hutchinson told the story succinctly but with enough detail to ask some great moral questions. Would recommend for a teaching tool!
When I checked this out from the library as an ebook, I thought it was the graphic novel of the more adult version. I went ahead and read it anyway and it was pretty good, but I felt it was missing something with the simple language. I need to read the original classic.
I didnt realize it was an abridged version when I started it but honestly I felt like it was really nicely summarized once I swapped back to the original version.
I found the book thrilling but not in the sense of horror. What's really scary about this book is the questions it poses about human morality and the cycle of life.
Another thought. I saw a theatrical presentation of A Picture of Dorian Grey while in the middle of reading Frankenstein. Someone should write an essay comparison of these two characters and their tales. While one of them has all the looks and the other none, they both find themselves monstrous devils in the end.
I had no idea this book was so short! My kids picked a classic for book club, and I needed a quick read. A good story, but certainly seemed like poor writing for high school class required reading. Just such simple sentences, no variation at all so I wasn’t super impressed. But interesting to think about the monster Frankenstein created would be lonely from being scorned by his creator! The ending was no ending basically, the story was not resolved which I never like!
2025 note- reading the full text now. This must have been abridged and I didn’t realize it!!
