In 1788, Shanadee, a young Beothuk girl has her first violent encounter with the White Man. In the coming days and years it will happen again and again as her family desperately struggles to survive in the harsh Newfoundland environment, while suffering the relentless harassment of the white settlers. We join them as they unwittingly make their journey into extinction.
A most compelling fictional account based on real people, places and circumstances of the Indigenous people of Newfoundland. Highly recommended reading for all ages!
I really enjoyed this book. Felt like a light summer historical fiction. For the first book written, I felt like it was well done. When I had to put it down to do something, I was happy to get back to it quickly to see what would happen next. Learned a lot abt nfland and the original people who were there. Happy moments, sad moments, and surprising moments. Would recommend this book and looking forward to getting my hands on the follow up book.
I liked it. I didn't think I would, when I heard the two guys who had just come over from England (?), speaking with a Newfoundland accent. And there were a few annoying grammar errors, which I find tends to be distracting in a book. But the fact is, this guy is a pretty good storyteller, and it's a story worth reading. So I finished it, and I'm probably going to read his other two books.
