Against The Tide

Avery
I had the perfect life. A successful husband. A beautiful home. The sweetest little girl.

All I had to do was keep quiet.

One blow turned my world to nothing. Every blow after that gave me the courage to run: bruised, bleeding, with my daughter's hand in mine and nothing else to my name.

I wasn't looking for a man to save me. I was looking for somewhere safe to fall apart.

Then Rhett Reynolds showed up with his surgeon's hands and his steady voice, calling me sunshine like I hadn't forgotten what warmth felt like. He doesn't just see my bruises, he sees me. And for every wound he heals, he uncovers a piece of the woman I buried to survive.

The only problem is, the hell I ran from isn't done with me yet.

Rhett
I've spent ten years avoiding anything that looks like love. One failed marriage and a lifetime of guilt will do that to a man.

Then Avery Summers showed up with mossy green eyes, a bruised jaw, and a seven-year-old daughter who begged me to read her bedtime stories and teach her to ride the waves... and just like that, they owned me.

I'm a surgeon. I fix things. But Avery doesn't need fixing—she needs someone to stand beside her while she puts herself back together. Someone to fight for her and her kid when the devil they ran from comes knocking.

I'm not a perfect man. But I'll burn down anything that threatens them.

I don't care how dangerous it gets. How many threats come for the ground we stand on or how far against the tide we have to push.

I will sacrifice everything, including my last breath, to protect what's mine. My girls.

This is only the second book I’ve read by this author and, after Play for Keeps, I genuinely thought, there’s no way she’s topping that for me.

Well… apparently she can and she did 😭😍

This book basically looked at a list of all my favourite tropes and said “say less.”

✨ He Falls First
✨ Found Family
✨ Abusive Past Relationship / He Becomes Her Safe Place
✨ Protective MMC
✨ Not Her Kid’s Dad But Loves Her Like His Own 🥹
✨ 💦 In His Pants
✨ Pet Names — “Sunshine” & “Doc”
✨ Marine Biologist x Heart Surgeon
✨ Murder Mystery
✨ Suspense & Angst
✨ Dual POV
✨ Mentions of Past Cheating
✨ Mentions of Infertility

Avery and Rhett. MY HEART.

Their relationship begins under absolutely heartbreaking circumstances, but watching it grow into something so safe, loving and genuinely beautiful was everything.
Rhett helps Avery learn how to trust again. He protects her, worships her, supports her and shows her exactly how she should have been loved all along and I’m sorry but… WHAT MORE DO I NEED FROM AN MMC?! 🥹

Swoooooooon.

And it isn’t just Avery he falls for — it’s her seven-year-old daughter, Iris, too. 😭 Rhett becomes their safe place.
This man basically becomes an instant reformed playboy the second he lays eyes on Avery’s beaten face. From that moment, he decides that nobody is ever going to hurt her again.

And DAMNNNN does that man keep his promise. 👊🏻

But what I loved most is that this isn’t just a romance.

Avery’s story is also such a powerful reminder of the strength it takes to walk away from an abusive relationship — whether that abuse is physical, mental or emotional. Watching her choose herself and her daughter, despite knowing how difficult and terrifying that choice could be, made me love her character even more.

And the FOUND FAMILY?! 😭

Possibly my favourite part of the entire book.
Alexandra absolutely nails found family. The side characters give Avery exactly what she needs — unconditional love, protection, affection and the occasional dose of tough love — and I adored every single one of them.

Then, because apparently the romance wasn't enough to keep me glued to the pages, we also have the mystery surrounding Avery’s dad’s death 👀 and a suspense element running alongside everything else.
I read this book in 24 HOURS because I genuinely could not put it down.

It had romance.
It had heat. 🔥
It had suspense.
It had mystery.
It had healing.
It had found family.
It had a ridiculously protective, completely gone-for-her MMC.
And it had a BUCKET LOAD OF WHOLESOMENESS. 🥹

I absolutely adored Avery and Rhett’s story.
Easy 5 stars. No notes. Give me another Rhett immediately. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Unexpected, emotional, and beautifully suspenseful.

I went into Against the Tide expecting a small-town romantic suspense, but I wasn’t prepared for how much I would love the emotional depth woven into Rhett and Avery’s story.

Rhett is far from perfect, but he is absolutely perfect for Avery. He’s older, he’s made mistakes, and he’s learned some incredibly difficult lessons along the way. He had his own healing to do before he could become the man Avery needed. Avery often wishes they had met earlier, but honestly? I don’t think an earlier version of Rhett would have been the man she needed. The Rhett she meets now: steady, patient, protective, and emotionally present, is exactly right for her.

Avery is everything I wanted her to be. She’s brave, smart, resilient, and fiercely devoted to her daughter. After everything she’s endured, she isn’t looking for someone to swoop in and save her. She needs somewhere safe to fall apart, heal, and rediscover herself. And that’s exactly what Rhett gives her. He doesn’t try to rush her healing or make her feelings fit his timeline. He gives her the time and space to find herself again, and eventually realize that she loves him, too.

And Rhett loving both Avery and her daughter? 🥹 Absolutely melted me. His protectiveness, his patience, the forehead kisses, the “touch her and die” energy… YES. But what made it so much better was that underneath all that protective intensity was a man who understood that loving Avery meant allowing her to have agency over her own healing.

The suspense kept me turning the pages, while the romance slowly built into something incredibly heartfelt. I also loved the found-family elements and the relationship between Rhett and Avery’s daughter.

There were a few moments where I wondered if I had somehow missed a previous book in an interconnected series because some things felt like they had a little more backstory than what we were given. Maybe that was intentional or simply the way the story was written, but it never took away from my enjoyment of Against the Tide.

Rhett and Avery’s story was emotional, suspenseful, romantic, and ultimately about finding safety after surviving things that changed you. Rhett may not be a perfect man, but he became exactly the man Avery and her daughter needed.

Five stars for this unexpected romantic-suspense gem.

Thank you to the author for the ARC. This review is only my opinion.

𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩 - romantic suspense, single mom on the run, small town, forced proximity, found family, surgeon mmc x marine biologist fmc

—

When I saw that Alexandra was dropping a romantic suspense I was definitely SAT and this book did not disappoint I was so hooked from the very beginning even though I was crying and my emotions were all over the place but for some reason I just couldn’t put this book down I was so invested in this story. The plot was amazing, the characters including side ones was really good I was just loving everyone expect two people who I hated iykyk

Avery has been with her husband for years and her dad just died and her husband is getting worse and worse and is accusing her of sleeping with someone (he is). One night it got too far and Avery packed up and left with their daughter to a friend’s Callie’s place. I freaking love Avery and little Iris they are both so amazing and sweet and deserve the absolute world!

While Avery is staying with a friend she starts to fall for the doctor who’s also has a very interesting past. These two are so amazing together I’m so glad they found a home with each other cause their little family is so precious especially in that bonus scene it literally had me crying. The chemistry between Avery and Rhett is so intense and amazing I screaming at my kindle for them to kiss already.

Rhett is a Surgeon who’s hadn’t been in a relationship for a long time because of his old marriage and the mistakes that he made during it and I definitely liked that he also knows what he did before was wrong but also he didn’t let it define him as a bad person. Rhett is just everything to me and his relationship was Iris was absolutely perfect I loved seeing him being there for Avery but also her daughter

Avery and Rhett both overcome so many things in this book and I was so happy for them cause you can just tell their perfect for each other and them getting to learn more about each other but also trusting each other with so much was so important. Even though this book had me at the edge of my seat half the time I was still reading it in one sitting.

Thank You So Much for giving me this incredible arc!💐

Against The Tide is a small town, single mom, found family, romantic suspense. The story is told in first person, dual pov.

Avery and her daughter, Iris, find themselves in a very dangerous situation. Avery makes the decision to run with her daughter and try to find a safe place to be. With the help of her friend, she finds a place to land. Rhett is a doctor with a romantic past that haunts him. He is there to help Avery when she arrives in Silverlark Harbor.

This was a fabulous read. I honestly fell in love with all of the characters, main and secondary, they were all simply amazing. The emotion, suspense, and turmoil of the story were awesome.

My emotions were literally all over the place while reading this story. My heart went out to Avery and all she has been through and still goes through. Rhett warmed my heart with his protectiveness of Avery from the moment he met her, and the way he was with her daughter.

The chemistry, tension, and spice between Rhett and Avery was hot, and I loved every single second of it. The way that they dealt with the obstacles that plagued them, and the way that their relationship developed was absolutely fantastic. It was very satisfying to see Rhett and Avery get their hard earned HEA.

The writing, pace, flow, and plot of the story were all terrific, as were the characters storyline, storytelling character development, relationship development, and world building. I honestly could not have loved Rhett and Avery's story more and am very excited to see what comes next from this incredible author.

Thank you so very much to Alexandra Silva for the ARC; all thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

“Avery is all there is, and the sunshine she doesn’t realize she has inside her. The goddamn sunshine I’m addicted to”

Alexandra does it again! This book will have you laughing, crying and have you on the edge of your seat. The emotional roller coaster this book brings you will be worth it. The amount of happy tears I cried by the end of this book was crazy! Alexandra knows how to write the perfect love story of two people struggling to know if they deserve to have the love they have seen around them. It was so hard to put this book down.

If you love a book where he falls first and hard this is the book for you. The cutest love story between Avery and Rhett on their journey to find what truly being loved means. Her on the run from her abusive husband and him not knowing if he can truly love someone after his marriage went up in flames mostly because of him. You see them grow and develop the longer they get to know each other. The way her community rallies behind her and helps protect her and give her the life that she deserves is so cute! I cried too many times when they did different things to help her out. The way he takes her daughter under his wings and becomes the dad that she deserved also made me cry my eyes out. I wish I could reread this book for the first time over and over again.

This book was so much more than I was expecting going in to this story. It is full of tension and drama and dark moments and heat. I was truly captivated by the characters and the story. My heart truly broke for Avery and everything that she endured. But she did endure. She is so strong. Rhett is so protective of and drawn to Avery, despite his best efforts to not be. Their connection and chemistry are completely off the charts. But it’s the support and understanding he gave her that truly had me swooning. Watching everything grow and develop between these two was so intense and emotional and insane. This book has twists and turns, darkness and light, hurt and healing. It’s an emotional rollercoaster but one I would ride again and again.

The second that this book was announced I wanted to read it! I got right into this story. I so enjoyed it!

Avery and Rhett's journey pulled my heart right in! Avery is a single mom to daughter Iris and has to get them away from everything. As it leads her to colliding with Rhett, a surgeon, could these two open their hearts up to each other?

From the start this story had me feeling every bit while reading. The moment that Rhett and Avery were brought together I wanted to see how everything would play out for them. I loved seeing their connection grow. Avery was dealing with so much in her life and I felt for her so much. It's a tough journey.

My heart broke for Avery and everything she went through. She had such strength. Avery's love and care for her daughter, Iris, shined all throughout. The way that Rhett wanted to keep Avery and Iris safe got me right in the chest. Seeing him fall was just the sweetest thing.

I absolutely adored Iris and what all that she brought to the story. The moments she shared with her mom and Rhett touched my heart!

With Against The Tide, Alexandra Silva has created a very moving romance that brought real depth and many emotions that got right to my heart!

Be sure to check out the author's content/trigger warnings as this story deals with serious subjects.

Please note the reason for the long time reading is because I've been bed ridden and definitely not because of the quality of this book. (Hence all the stars)
I am so glad this author dipping her toe back into the suspense genre as she does it so well. This book is proof of that.
Even though we didn't get alllll the answers, you'll still finish feeling satisfied with a full heart. This book has a bit of everything for every readers tastes so I definitely recommend it.
I cannot wait to see what this talented author comes up with next, and I hope this isn't the last we see of these characters.
Yes my review is vague but the story and its characters speak for themselves, vocally in Jo's case.

What an amazing emotional book! Rhett and Avery have a deep connection and it’s not just the love between them, but also the love for Avery’s Daughter!

One thing I absolutely love about Alexandra’s books is that there are great love stories, but other layers of the story that keep me reading as well. This one had mystery and intrigue and I couldn’t put it down!

An amazing emotional and suspenseful story that showed that true love and trust are a beautiful thing!

Rhett and Avery's story gripped me from the beginning. What starts out as a woman escaping a horrible marriage where she is betrayed and dealing with the loss of loved ones, turns into something so beautiful. The connection the characters have is so pure. It amazes me at how strong Avery turns out to be. A must read!

This story is so good! It’s a romantic suspense with a riveting plot, fast paced action and a beautiful romance. Avery and her young daughter are running from a very bad situation. Rhett, a brilliant and emotionally closed off surgeon, ends up being their saving grace. Avery and Rhett build a strong emotional connection and a beautiful relationship. I was rooting for their HEA. Great story.

This is an arc review ✨ thank you so much to Alexandra Silva for the arc!

To start this review off, I’ll admit that the cover was the first thing that snagged me even though one isn’t supposed to judge a book by its cover. It immediately held my attention because of how the main characters were looking at each other and having read the blurb, I was really looking forward to Rhett and Avery’s HEA.

I love a single parent romance and when it’s a grumpy x sunshine as well it just gets better for me and Against the Tide did not disappoint. I’m rating it a 4.5 stars and I think that if you enjoy a single mom romance with a couple that has so much chemistry that burns slow until it’s unavoidable and you also enjoy a suspense subplot, this is a book you should read.

Rhett and Avery are two characters that have lived, loved and lost throughout their lives and yet didn’t realize until meeting each other how much of life was yet to be lived, together. I really liked their relationship and how they gave each other time and space to fully develop a foundation that held strong during their ongoing romance. Avery is such a sweetheart FMC that it’s impossible to not like her and Rhett is so devoted to her and Iris that he doesn’t even feel grumpy, he is just so happy to be with them.

Rhett and Iris’s relationship is heartwarming and beautiful, cementing the idea that love comes in many ways and sometimes blood isn’t thicker than water. Family being who you want them to be and not who you were given. Their bond was not only vital to the plot line but when reading, you could feel the love between this little family and the rest of their extended found family as well.

I love a good romance and I love when characters get the chance to get their HEA after traumatic backgrounds so this is a book I really liked and without spoiling anything, I definitely think it’s book that is completely worth the reading!

Thank you for the arc ✨
