3.5 The beast Stars

Dragon Knight's Axe the 3rd book in the Order of the Dragon Knights series was really good for me til this one part pissed me off causing me to drop my rating from a 4 star to a 3.5 star. Book 3 is Fiona and Alastair Mackay's story. Alastair is a darker hero than the previous two. I really liked Alastair and his beastly ways. I did however get really upset over some crap he pulled and it made me drop the rating Fiona was really sassy and I liked that. Fiona and Alastair had plenty of heat but he fought his feelings for a while. I loved Fiona's brothers and loved getting to catch up with the two couples from the past books. I love the time traveling theme so much. I really enjoyed this book for the most part and I still really love this series.

I was revved up for this one, because I’ve already fallen in love with the series and the author’s writing.

And true to form I was pulled into a fantastic story within the first paragraph in 1206. I was fighting a vicious sea, spewing water from my mouth, slashing rain and wind so strong I was brought to my knees. Was I headed overboard? Whoa! What an opening.

This series has time travel. Why do I love it so? It’s because traveling to the past is NOT something each heroine in the series wants. Each have their own story on how they arrived to the highlands. In my fantasy of fantasies, I’d really love to be one of these women who get pulled back. But since it is HIGHLY unlikely, I must satisfy myself traveling through the imagination and inspiration of a clever author. Mary Morgan has captured my fantasies with fae, a dragon living in Loch Ness who can speak through mind touch, brawny, brave, honorable men and a wild land of magic.

Alastair is one of the Clan MacKay brothers, also known as Dragon Knights, who were the protectors and guardian of the last remaining dragon. They also held Holy Relics to protect. These brothers were special because they were half fae, half human with mystical powers. Alastair’s was the most powerful, for he had control of the land and he was responsible for the holy relic axe.

When blood of their sister, Meggie, was spilled on holy ground, the Fae removed the relics from them and their names were stricken from the Order. In essence, they were banished. But because the Fae stilled loved them, they gave them a path to redemption. A quest.

An added tidbit I felt very compelling were the one sentence sayings beginning each chapter. For example here are two.

"To control one’s destiny ‘tis foolish, for it will bind the person in chains upon a path of uncertainty."

"A thorn will cause ye to bleed. However, the truth will tear your heart to shreds."

Fiona lived in present day, Dublin, Ireland. An intelligent researcher working at Trinity College was busy working on a translation of a slab found in Navan during an archeological dig. It was written in Latin and Ogham with two words in Gaelic Dragon Knight. Fiona was like one obsessed when she worked. She always had to find out the meaning behind words. And she did, but not in the way she expected.

Fiona was much the loner. She rather be with animals for she communicated with them better than people. One fateful day not far in the future she met destiny, and was sent back to the past.

This is Alastair’s story as well as Fiona’s. Alastair had to face his past, and learn from it. He had been staying off land, at sea, for the sea wasn’t his element. He could not manipulate it. He chose this as punishment for his part in the death of his sister. There was a point where he decided to face the future. It was time for him to redeem himself and begin his quest. Destiny placed Fiona in his path. It's a good thing he came when he did for Fiona was being sold as a slave! Yes, this is a delicious story!

This story was full of adventure, excitement, mystery, suspense, Fae, Fenian warriors and a dragon. Is it a combination that intrigues you? Do indulge. What a world, what a series and what a great story! Lassies, meet your brawny highlanders who will NOT disappoint.

Just a note here. There is just a wee bit of 'real' in this story. Arbroath Abbey did exist among other places. Make sure to peruse the author's notes at the back of the book. Hopefully, it will wet your appetite to stay a bit longer in the past, this time, the real past.

Alastair MacKay escaped to the sea but when he rescues a woman from a slave trader in Ireland he inadvertently steps back into the world of magic and takes on the role of protector once more in this enthralling paranormal fantasy romance. The author has created a fascinating world full of intriguing characters and I fall in love with each brother as I read their stories and I really can’t wait to read Angus’ story. Note: you could read these out of order because each brother’s story is his own, although the overall conflict with evil is ongoing and crosses stories but the author gives you enough to go on so you don’t get lost.

I love these brothers! Another wonderful story in the Dragon Knights series. It was a bit darker and more deeply emotional than the other two but no less beautiful in the love story. I can't wait for the next one and hopefully be treated to all the brothers and their families again.

Fun wonderful ride

Another excellent book contributing to the redemption of the Dragon Nights! Alastair is a deeply scarred soul when he rescues Fiona but the path of their story is filled with bumps and pain before they finally reach the end of his quest. Definitely enjoyable!

Alastair MacKay's powers come from the land. Yet, he will take to the ocean in self-punishment, mocking the God of the Sea.

Cursed and battle scarred, he is feared by many. They say he is two men. One part angel--one part monster. One would only have to look at his face to distinguish between the two.

Nevertheless, his day of reckoning grows near.

Alastair MacKay will have to battle the demon he created, for the love of a woman who is brave enough to love them both.
In the end, on must die.

*~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~*

Dragon Knights Axe is the third book in the, Order of the Dragon Knights Series. In this third book, we get to read Alastair MacKay's story. I do believe that Alastair MacKay has stolen my heart. While I like all three brothers, he is by far my favorite!

After the death of his sister, Meggie, Alastair MacKay takes to the sea, refusing to stay on land for only short periods at a time. He does this to punish himself for the death of his sister, by denying himself the power of land. He is a battle scared warrior, and he believes that he is not worthy of redemption. He is feared by many, and has few true friends. The later of which is of his own choosing.

Fiona O’Quinlan is a research assistant, and it is a job she loves with a passion. Some might say she is obsessed. If she is doing research on a relic or a find, she does not leave any stone un-turned. Fiona has a tendency to speak her mind, and she is no timid lass. She also has a few demons of her own that she is fighting.

After working on a dig all day in the hot sun, Fiona decides she is going to take a break, and a short nap. She goes to find a cool place, and accidentally walks into a grove of oaks (she was told not to go into this part of the dig). She starts to get dizzy, falls to the ground, and sleeps. When she awakens she is nearly 800 years in the past.

I am not going to say anymore about the plot or story, because I don't want to spoil the ride for anyone reading this review. I loved, loved Alastair and Fiona's story. Alright, so Alastair made me want to pull his hair a few times, because he is a very stubborn man. I put those feelings aside, because I knew everything he had been through.

He and Fiona have great chemistry, and there are a few steamy scenes in this book, but they are tastefully done. The story moves along at a nice pace, and there is just enough tension to make you keep reading to find out what happens next. There are a few of the same characters in this book that were in the previous two books. I love it when an author does that.

There were a few scenes in the book that had me a little misty eyed. You know an author is just as good at showing as they are telling a good story when that happens. Mary Morgan has outdone herself with Dragon Knight's Axe. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a good romance, with time travel, paranormal elements, great story telling, and a strong H&H.

If you are going to read this book, but haven't read the first two, I recommend you read those first. It will make this story more enjoyable. You will know who's who, and what happened that made the Dragon Knight's go their separate ways to start with. If you don't mind not knowing, then I would jump into this book with both feet.

I was given an ARC of this book by the author, but my thoughts and opinions about this book are my own.

I am the first to say that Mary Morgan's, Order of the Dragon Knights Series is steeped in legend, has grand sweeping landscapes and epic lovestories.. It is a fantastic series that combines some of Scotland's known legends with sheer fantasy. It has time travel and Druids, Dashing Heroes in need of redemption and strong Heroines willing to believe in the impossible.

The first two books Dragon Kinght's Sword and Dragon Knight's Medallion are beyond spectacular but book three, Dragon Knight's Axe was a bit of a miss. Don't get me wrong it was a very good book but it lacked the power of mythos.

The legend continues and this time it's Alastair MacKay who is destined to find redemption in the arms of his destined mate, a woman from the future. Only this time there's a twist.. no I'm not telling you *grins*

Fiona O’Quinlan is a modern woman with her head in the past. Translating ancient texts is her greatest pleasure and she often gets lost in the wonder of it all. When a "friend and co-worker" steals her work and claims she hasn't done a thing, Fiona is tossed from her latest assignment and at a bit of a loss of what to do. Fortunately a temporary position on another dig came up and from there Fiona is literally transported to the past. Right into a slave auction. Only to be saved by a big "beast" of a man and feeling like she's gone from the fire to pan..

Alastair MacKay has turned his life on his family and heritage. He's convinced that he has nothing to offer mankind and his legacy is nothing but a lost dream. He's a man of the earth but to further punish himself he forces himself to make his life at sea. When on land he's there for the shortest period possible. But one such stop changes the course of his life.

Alastair is never quite sure of why he saved Fiona from the slave mart, he just knew he had to. He tried to turn away from her but there was something constantly pulling at him. And when he tried to return her to her family both of them were in for the surprise of a lifetime, or two!

Watching Alastair and Fiona run as fast as they can away from each other only to keep finding the other in the same place was rather fun. While this was an emotional push and pull I wanted more Druids and Dragons.. And I am thinking I am being a bit rough because as I write this review I realize that there was so much going on behind the scenes. That the Druid dynamics are much subtler I have to rethink my initial claim on this book. It isn't as action packed as the first two, it's subtler, it's sneakier. And yet the relationship between Alastair and Fiona was strong and true.

I loved that while Fiona fit perfectly in the past, she was always a modern woman with a mind of her own and Alastair had to prove himself to her not the other way around.

Alastair McKay doesn’t want redemption for his sister’s death. This is why he has taken to the sea. His power lies with the land and he will avoid that at all cost. That is until he sees the beautiful Fiona being sold by some slave traders. Together they must take his Axe to the Great Dragon and help Alastair find his redemption. Unfortunately, Alastair doesn’t want to find his redemption. But, something inside him is still drawn to her. He resists her and when he makes a vow to her newly discovered brother that he won’t touch her or do anything that would disgrace her. The problem is that Fiona is equally drawn to him and makes things very difficult. But, once they can’t hold back any longer they find a happiness together they didn’t think was possible. It isn’t until something threatens to tear them apart that forces Alastair to make decisions he thought he’d never have to make. Can they find the love and redemption that is there or will Alastair choose to lose all that he has out of stubbornness and misplaced guilt?

As always, Mary Morgan brings us another fantastic story about her Dragon Knights. I loved this new addition and continue to enjoy the romance between the two main characters. She truly can write a highland romance like nobody else. The characters are brought to life and the history is so tangible it makes the reader feel like they are there. Not to mention all of her highlanders are hotter than hot. Who wouldn’t want to go in the past to meet theses knights. Overall, this is another novel by Mary Morgan that I couldn’t put down until the very last page was turned. Even then I still wanted more. I truly can’t wait for her next in this series.

The third brother Alastair MacKay meets his match with Fiona O’Quinlan in Dragon's Knight's Axe by Mary Morgan. Alastair’s story is a darker than the first two brothers’ stories. However, I enjoyed it just as much and Alastair’s redemption is so much the sweeter for the beast that waging war within him. There is an old world quality about Fiona as if she is an old soul stuck in the modern world. For me indoor plumbing would be a hard line but for her not so much. Together these two sizzle so it is only male hard headedness that slows the inevitable. I appreciate that Fiona often chooses not to fight against it but just goes on and does what needs to be done. You go, girl. If only Alastair did not have to learn this lesson by almost losing her.

Besides these two marvelous characters are supporting one that I found to be truly intriguing. Rory, who can move between time periods, Kevan, who is more than just a simple bard, and Fiona’s brother, Desmond are three that caught my interest. Seeing the interactions between all of these on their journey is an entertaining delight brightening the darker side to the story.

I love the twist on the time traveling element of this tale and found that it is expertly woven into the fabric of this well written plot. Along with it is the encounters with enemies of the MacKay’s and the dragon visit. All combine to make this a truly epic adventure of the power of redemptive love.

Each time you read a story, you want to "feel" a connection with the characters that will enable your imagination to soar, to become involved with the adventure unfolding. With Dragon Knight's Axe, you do become one with the story. In fact, you become a pivotal player as you yourself envision becoming the main character Fiona and how lucky is that to be having this adventure with such a man like Alastair? It's exciting that's what it is. Dragon Knight's Axe is a very fast paced, visual read, and it's charming and fun and you will read this in one sitting because you just won't put the book down. It has depth and emotion and I loved it. Alastair is your Knight in shining armor. He's hurting inside and all you want to do is take that hurt away and you did when you became Fiona. Totally delicious. Another story very well written Mary.

Redemption is a winding and treacherous path...

The path to redemption is a complex journey and Alistair is faced with more truths about his own demon than he is willing to acknowledge. His failure to protect his sister coupled with his inability to protect Fiona, challenges his faith in his own honor. Until he realizes he is worthy, he will never be complete again. His quest, as the quests faced by his brothers, will lead him one step closer to his own honor and love. Alistair learns the influence of magic and the fae sometimes is less complicated than family. Enjoy this enchanting book, another great read by an author that spins a tale of adventure and emotion with the expertise of a weaver of spun golden thread.

I've read the entire series and I liked Alastair's and Fiona's story the best. I thought it was a brilliant plot devise that Alastair was a ship's captain and smuggler when he hated the sea. The beginning of the novel was very clever, as it showed how Alastair was punishing himself.

Fiona was OK but Alastair really carried the story. Although, I didn't really think he was a beast. That plot devise was overblown in my opinion.

What I don't understand is how Fiona can be such an intellectual and studies the period she is thrown into and then doesn't really think about what an outstanding opportunity it is to actually be in the period you were studying.

Totally enjoyed this tale of time travel Fae, Druids and Dragon Knights. A great combination. Alistair and Fiona set the pages on fire when they got together and there are some narrow escapes and some exciting fight scenes . As I haven't read the previous books I found all of the secondary characters really likable and they helped make the story a fun read. Of course there is a villain and he is still around. Angus's story should be the next book in the series and I will be looking for it. I won this book and loved it.

I truly enjoyed this story. Another brother lost in his soul, not needing anyone to heal him, didn't want some one to heal him. He would rather live with his misery.
Fiona, love sarcheology, loves history unbeknownst to her, she is going to get exactly that.
Emotional, love, betrayal, lies, and deceit all wrapped in one action pack story.

Alastair and Fiona’s story is a well written, emotional story that reels you in and doesn't release you until it's done. Mary Morgan made me want to spend time with the characters and maybe give them a nudge or some advice once in a while. A unique story with some surprises and twists that will hold on to your attention to the end. You will not regret picking this one up.

In book three of the Order of the Dragon Knights, Fiona O’Quinlan is obsessed with translating an old Irish stone tablet. She doesn’t have any friends and feels disconnected with her world. Then she passes out in a grove of trees only to awaken a captive in the 13th century.
Alastair MacKay is drawn to the unusual woman he sees at a slave market. Though he abhors slavery, he buys the woman to free her. Once he learns Fiona’s surname, he takes her to her kinfolk only to realize she isn’t what she seems. She’s from the future, but she was born in his time and has a Fenian warrior as a guardian. Alastair has shunned his fae heritage after the death of his beloved sister, but now he has no choice but to take a quest in order to fulfill his and Fiona’s destiny.
I love these characters! Fiona was levelheaded despite her predicament, and Alastair…wow. I adored him! He was so cold and angry at first, but Fiona chipped away at his defenses bit by bit, bringing him back from the darkness within his own soul. He was a completely different man by the end of the story, and I think he experienced the most character development of all the series heroes thus far. I especially liked that the H/h’s meeting with the Great Dragon was different from how the meetings were played out in the previous books.
Duncan, Stephen, and their wives returned, and I enjoyed all their scenes. I wish there would’ve been more scenes with Patrick and Alex MacFhearguis, though. Rory MacGregor was Fiona’s yummy protector, and I hope to see more of him and his fellow Fenian warriors in the later books.
Though I enjoyed this story, I felt that the climax (the battle with Michael) happened too fast, especially since it took place in the middle of the book. The pacing slowed a bit after that, but Alastair’s anger and pain over what had happened, and later Fiona’s sense of betrayal, kept my attention on the page.
Dragon Knight’s Axe is another wonderful addition to Ms. Morgan’s fascinating fantasy romance series.
Angus’s story is next, so stay tuned for the review.

Allistair and Fiona

Timeless Love:
Allistair's power is the earth. To punish himself for the horrible night he and his brothers lost their sister and their Knighthood, he sails the seas trading from Scotland to Ireland. He hates the water but it is the least he deserves. On one trip he rescues Fiona from slave traders.

Unlike all the other times he ignored the goings-on he could not ignore her. As her protector, he agrees to take her to her family in Ireland. When feelings are heated a long trip can only make resiting impossible.

Fiona is caught unaware by the slave trader. When she is sold to Allister she wonders if she is in a better situation.

Their love story is funny, sad, filled with the stubbornness of both. When evil magic intrudes a battle will be fought--will they live through it?

I love the series the families. The reader gets to visit the other brothers who have battled to earn back their status. Allistaire knows he can never--right?

I listened to the audio version and loved not only the story and the strength of the characters but the narration was great. I'm listening to the entire series.

Dragon Knight’s Axe is the third book in the Order of the Dragon Knights by Mary Morgan.

As with the first two books in the series Dragon Knight’s Sword and Dragon Knight’s Medallion this is a story of forgiveness, redemption and love that transcends time. It follows another of the MacKay brothers who were the last remaining dragon’s protector and guardian. They were born with mystical powers that were part of their fae heritage. They were also chosen to protect Holy Relics.

I fell in love with the MacKay brothers when I was first introduced to them in the story of Duncan MacKay.

In Dragon Knight’s Axe we are introduced to Alastair MacKay, the most powerful of the brothers, as he had the power to control the land. The holy relic that he was chosen to protect was the axe.

This third installment is the story of Alastair and Fiona. As with the previous heroines, Fiona is feisty, stubborn, brave and the key to unlocking Alastair’s pain enough to where he can find forgiveness within himself which will allow him to finally heal.

We once again get the knowledge of Druid, visited by the famous Fenian Warrior and get to visit the most beautiful dragon “Nessy”.

The book takes you on emotional roller coaster. I found it a little darker than the other two because I found Alastair to have a more tortured soul and needed to overcome more in order to find forgiveness and redemption.

The love between Alastair and Fiona was one that had to be fought for but one that transcended time.

I love this series and am looking forward to the next book.

Men with scars, holding beasts within.

First I should say that I had to wait to read this one, book 3, until after I wrote a couple of promised reviews. Talk about agony! I listened to the first two in audio as well and became a hard and fast fan of Mary Morgan's writing and especially this series. I feel really bad because I know I've had these books a while before getting a chance to begin reading them. I don't like to spoil the fun of reading for others by telling what's going to happen, but I can say I thought it was excellent. Though I don't believe I have read any of Ms. Morgan's books before, I'd say this series would be an excellent place to start! Outward scars are much easier to discern, however, internal ones are unseen, but the repercussions from, are still felt and tend to baffle the unknowing. Fiona and Alastair have an interesting effect on one another, but as usual, lol, she is the harder worker when it came to relationship issues and seeing someone for the whole of who they are. I would easily recommend this book/series to my friends who enjoy historical romance books with a touch of magic in them. The sexual scenes were there, but not "explicit", as were any scenes with violence. It was more implied than stated in gory detail, which as a mother, I appreciate. I would feel comfortable with my daughter reading these books. Also, I should stress that I loved and reviewed, I think, the audio versions. Hopefully the last two will be out for the last two soon! If you get chance, give them a try also.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC but that does not colour my review in any way.
Another wonderful story from the Dragon Knights series. The third book, it can be read as a stand alone, but contains spoilers for the first two.
Alastair MacKay has been punishing himself and denying his powers, since the death of his sister. His power is of the earth ,so he took to the sea as a trader. He and his crew are in port on the eastern side of Ireland when he saves a young woman from slavery. That act has committed him to return her to the family who share her name but she denies having.
Fiona O ´Quinlan fell asleep in 2015 at an archeological dig, and woke up in a very different time. 800 years in the past. Her confusion leads to her being captured by slavers.
Fiona has always been a bit of a misfit in her own time. She suffers from nightmares and has an unusual affinity with animals.
The more time Alastair spends on the land , and in Fiona´s company , the more trouble he has controlling the surge of power within him. He must not claim the power he feels he is not worthy of.
A great, magical adventure through the wilds of Ireland and the Scottish Highlands. With a typical modern ,independent woman and a tortured hero. They face a maniacal Laird , and must deal with Druids and the Fae. We meet up with the other MacKay brothers and their families. We still have another brother to meet . So our wonderful ,talented author needs to write quickly.

I loved it, from the beginning to the end you kept me on my toes. There were a few times that I had to walk away from the book. I was so irritated with it. The emotions that this book brings out is amazing. I couldn’t stop from wanting more. Wanting so badly to reach in and knock some sense into both of them. If she had not made the emotions in me so great in the beginning/middle I do not think the end would have been so profound. Seems a bit darker than the last but with this Hero it was needed. Would I want you to change anything in this book. No, any change would also change the feeling you have reading it. Every emotion you have through the book is necessary for the end. The Burst of emotions, it is almost overwhelming.

You get enough action, love, banter, excitement, and fighting to keep you reading. This book will be in your mind long after you have finished reading it. I feel the need to re-read it. Just to go through everything you feel in this book again. It is mystery, redemption, and new love all rolled into one awesome story.

Alastair is the youngest brother of the 4 in this series, and by far the most stubborn. His powers are controlling the land and his are the most powerful of the 4 as well. I like Fiona and enjoyed her brothers and Rory. I think I enjoyed the first two more than this one, and I'm sure it has everything to do with

I was hooked on this series with book one... and then two! Now this third book in the "Order of the Dragon Knights" series was so good that I want book four to be out so I can meet the last brother, Angus and read about his story. Dragon Knight's Axe was a perfect summertime read. I found I couldn't put it down. Loved the quotes at the beginning of each Chapter. Alastair and Fiona's story was written so well that I believed they were real characters from history. You can feel Alastair's painful emotional turmoil and regret caused by the death of his sister (no spoiler - this was in the first book), as well as Fiona struggling with her past, present and future. A wonderful mix of romance, fantasy, time travel and with a bit of Celtic history. Mary has an amazing imagination for storytelling and an originality that I haven't seen in other similar genres. Fun and great read!!

Magical

A great addition to the series, this book gripped me even more than the other two if that is possible. What a journey Fiona and Alastair had to their HEA. I was bombarded by emotions but I kept on hoping that he will redeem himself and take his rightful place beside his brothers. What a twist with Fiona travelling to the future and back, unlike the other two heroines in the previous books. The scene of their wows at the end had me in tears, so beautiful *sigh* Totally recommend this series, Liz you were right ;)

Mary Morgan is a bard for the ages. From the first encounter on the open ocean with this scarred warrior, I fell in love with this bad boy in a kilt. If he were in modern times, I can imagine him in motorcycle leathers. I knew he had met his match in Fiona as she jumped on a boulder to stand up to his bullying. This is one bad boy I wasn't sure if the author could redeem. I despaired at his flaws and cheered at the end. Definitely worth moving to the head of your reading list.

Another winner!

If you love bold handsome Knights, gorgeous fae warriors and strong beautiful women you have to read Mary Morgan's Dragon Knights series. Secretly I want Conn the fae warrior from book one as my number one book boyfriend from Mary Morgan's books!! Don't hesitate, you have to read this series. I'm already dying to read the next one!! Very well worth reading!!

Another fabulous story.

I've read all three of the DRAGON KNIGHTS books. Each one is better than the one before. Alistair is my favorite kind of hero. Big. Dark. Tortured. With sexy long hair! And I just love Ms. Morgan's feisty heroines. Looking forward to the fourth and final book.
