Meta City #1

The Beginning of the End

Rate this book
Meta City...

Home to former superheroes and super-villains... home to hundreds of thousands of metahumans who just have a few powers or advantages that 99+% of humanity doesn't have.

Meta City - a prison with walls of velvet, so comfortable, so inviting, that once you are there you really never want to leave...

Meta City - Home to Christopher Colvard, a young man of nine who was arrested and had an explosive collar placed around his neck by the police because he was a newly discovered metahuman who had hit a baseball a little too hard at a little league game.

This is mostly his story... mostly.

This book has some major flaws in it. One of the first flaws is that it had major grammatical errors such as capitalizing a word in the middle of a sentence, incomplete sentences, no punctuation, etc.
Also its main character (Chris) was basically the jackpot of all superpowers and he could have just been the only person in the book because the story and plot did not really on them much. I think this book has a good premise but just needs to be built on and added to. In general this book fells like it was in the editing stage and needs more polishing, but is a great read for someone who just wants a quick fun little story.

Terrible. I couldn't even make it to 10%. The dialog is wooden, the narration can't maintain it's point-of-view, and the author can't use a semicolon correctly. It reads like something you'd find on writing.com.

This was, by all definitions, a horrible book. The writing was clunky, there was grammatical errors all over, the MC felt completely unrealistic and we were left with an ending that was a clear set up for something that just never came. The way Richard was described was racist and other character descriptions often came across as awkward or weirdly sexual. It felt as if the author had no idea how to put himself in the shoes of someone else.

The plot was a too fast, which isn't something I say often - I'm a big fan of fast moving plots but I felt like this book could really have spent a longer time developing characters and character motivations. I could barely keep up with what was going on and new characters just kept getting thrown at me without respite.

Reading this book it really came across as if the author was writing fanfiction about his own book - it felt like we were already expected to know all about the characters and setting, with only minor tidbits of exposition thrown in as an afterthought.

That said - I've probably read this book at least four times. It's just a really fun and fast read, I'm a huge fan of OP characters and the MC was absolutely just that. The concept is really intriguing and something I'd love to hear more about.

There is an uncomfortable amount of discussion about children going through puberty and associated topics.

The plot and world building setup was very interesting but the execution left much to be desired. All the characters are flat and uninteresting. Mainly because the dialogue is painful to read.

The Hammonds had only one child, a girl. She… she drove me crazy; there was just something about her that scraped every nerve I had on fire. Both good and bad fires too. I was very, very grateful that I hadn’t reached puberty yet. If she affected me like I was now, what would she do when I was physically mature? I shuddered at the thought.

While this isn't dialogue, this is what I mean by painful to read.

"Physically mature"

This book is a solid four stars. Sadly, the first thing I noticed was the books bad grammar; you would find several grammar mistakes that would make you cringe. Seriously, cringe. So the grammar is on the down side, but the story is where you get lost. The main character, Chris, is an amazing person, and it's not just because of his 'special power'. (I'm trying not to spoil too much of the book, so Chris's power will remain a mystery.) His power is really unique, it's much different than anything I have seen (or read) before. How he handles the power, and how he goes through life without letting the con's drag him down. So his personality... Chris is cocky and modest at the same time. Honestly, I don't even know how that works, but he just is. He knows how to take responsibility and loves unconditionally. While the grammar mistakes are fatal, this story can really make you forget everything around you.

Okay, this one is a bit of a mix bag for me, I love Meta based books, and this one was a nice fun light read. It made it solely YA. There was a lacking depth, actions weren't explained they were just completed and then tossed around. At a point in the book the main character makes an amazing invention and literally tosses it to someone and say's 'make it better' and goes off to do other awesome things.
There was too much awesome and not enough of a kid just being a kid and dealing with the literal insanity happening to him and around him.
So if you're looking for a light read, give it a go! If you want more meat to your bones and characters that grip you, I'd check out some other examples.

Decent premise but...

I like the basic premise of this story: a city-sized internment camp for meta humans with changes outside that threaten it. The problem with it is the protagonist. He's a textbook example of Miss Mary Sue, more powerful than every other superhero, having every single superpower imaginable and doing everything in the story himself. The story would be pretty much the same if there were no other characters since they really don't do anything except marvel at the protagonist's amazing powers and super-genius inventions.

I made it to the end but I really can't recommend Meta City.

Meta City: Book 1 Is Awesome!

I liked EVERYTHING about this book, the plot, the characters, the Interaction of the characters and the abilities of the characters. I really really hope that there's a sequel to this book, cause I really want to read more about Meta City and it's defenders.

I'm also looking forward to reading everything else I can by this author. Keep up the great writing! :)

Best to me

Although plotwise it wasn't great, I enjoyed the book very much. Read it in two sittings. A coming of age story that holds your interest.
If you are serious about sci- fi and super heroes, this is not for you. However if you want a good quick read please do get this and enjoy it.

It was fantastic as it was disturbing. Great book as long as the author doesn't try to promote something funny. Also, at times I thought it was written by Bruce Jenner. However, I don't really know the author's motivations.

Makes you think

Almost too much happening for connection with the characters but the idea of what the main character goes through through adolescence and then the connection to mainstream syfy and fantasy ideas was interesting. The author style reminds me of Connie Suttle.

Decent

Interesting, but man there are a ton of typos and grammar issues. Needs an awesome editor and then it'll be five stars

Fun read

Fun and easy to get immersed in. Not too violent or sexualized, I'd recommend it for young readers who are looking for some escapism.

Very good read

I was constantly reminded to put it down so I could sleep, I didn't want to stop.
When is the next one coming?

Fun read

Needs more conflict and definite much more proofreading. Why are certain random words capitalized? This is not German. Might read more by this author.
