As certain people in her life begin mysteriously vanishing without a trace, Chicago prosecutor Jess Koster soon discovers that a shadow from her past--a maniac--is stalking her. Reissue.
Joy Fielding (née Tepperman; born March 18, 1945) is a Canadian novelist and actress. She lives in Toronto, Ontario.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, she graduated from the University of Toronto in 1966, with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. As Joy Tepperman, she had a brief acting career, appearing in the film Winter Kept Us Warm (1965) and in an episode of Gunsmoke. She later changed her last name to Fielding (after Henry Fielding) and began writing novels. Fielding is also the screenwriter of the television film Golden Will: The Silken Laumann Story.
At the age of 8, Joy Tepperman wrote her first story and sent it into a local magazine, and at age 12 sent in her first TV script, however both were rejected. She had a brief acting career, eventually giving it up to write full-time in 1972. She has published to date 22 novels, two of which were converted into film. Fielding's process of having an idea to the point the novel is finished generally takes a year, the writing itself taking four to eight months. Joy Fielding sets most of her novels in American cities such as Boston and Chicago. She has said that she prefers to set her novels in "big American cities, [as the] landscape seems best for [her] themes of urban alienation and loss of identity. Fielding is a Canadian citizen. Her husband's name is Warren, and they have two daughters, Annie and Shannon. They have property in Toronto, Ontario, as well as Palm Beach, Florida.
Fielding had an interview with the Vancouver Sun in 2007, just after her publication of Heartstopper. She enjoys catching readers off guard with the endings of her stories, but insists that "[it] isn't what her fiction is about", but rather more about the development of her characters. Discussing her novels with the Toronto Star in 2008, she said "I might not write fiction in the literary sense. But I write very well. My characters are good. My dialog is good. And my stories are really involving. I'm writing exactly the kind of books I like to write. And they're the kind of books I like to read. They're popular commercial fiction. That's what they are."
Fielding has been noted as a novelist who is more popular in the United States and foreign countries, rather than in her native Canada. For example, the novel Kiss Mommy Goodbye was more popular in the States, and See Jane Run in Germany. In addition, she had an American agent and publisher, although she has now switched to a Canadian publisher.
I read this book about 15 years ago. My wife belonged to a book club and I couldn't find anything around the house to read. The cover of the book was pink with a big lipstick mark on it. Just based on that, I was hesitant to read it (of course the macho neanderthal that I was back then). I am SO GLAD that I read it. It's actually one of my all time favorites. Great read, keeps you hooked the whole time and a phenomenal ending. They actually made a "Made for TV" movie based on this book - that of course was AWFUL.
If you get a chance, I highly recommend this book. You won't be sorry.
Our main character Jess Kostner’s behavior is very annoying in the first third of this book. The reason for this doesn’t become apparent until the very surprising finale. Her strength and desire for a better life for herself is revealed as she excels in a self-defense class for women. The class instructor tells his students to trust their instincts.... Author Fielding should have toned down Jess’s scattered characteristics. It may have cost her many readers. It almost lost me.
I took so long to finish this book because I realized early on that I didn’t like it but alas, my one true vice, I must finish everything I start. I like this author in general, perhaps because she is also from my city. But this book was mediocre at best. It felt as though she was trying to reach her word count goal. The book kept going on unnecessarily. I gave it three stars though because there were some points at which I genuinely thought something interesting was going to happen. I was almost done, on the last chapter, and finally everything tied together so I was satisfied from a resolution perspective. However, I can imagine 10 different endings, all of which are better than the one I read.
I'm surprised to see so many excellent reviews for this book and regret to share not so positive opinion about it. The story is ok, a bit predictable though. What really makes me give only 2 stars is the style of the author - too much repetitive phrases, too much monologues and silly dialogues. I felt that I was constantly being told what to feel and think. Just not my style I guess.
The relationships in this book don't seem realistic - an ex-husband spending more time with his ex-wife and her fiancee. Rapists and murderers getting off with quick verdicts after trials with compelling evidence. It just seemed to tax credibility.

One of Fielding older books but very well written, enjoyed it immensely. My daughter bought this book for me at a library friends sale (great job Kylie), all the better. Loved it. Highly reccomend.
I hate to be writing this because all other reviews are so full of praise for this book. It was a quick read, yes. And the suspense around the main character, Jess too was interesting. But I found the climax disappointing. The reason for all the trouble in her life didn't seem all that crazy, after all.
In a typical Joy Fielding pattern, she has lengthy monologues that could do with some heave editing. But I really enjoyed the two side cases that were part of the book, but definitely not part of the story. They were just there to offer some insight on morality and Jess' personality, nothing more. But I enjoyed them more than the real story.
The romance part was still cute. But really, I was looking or nail biting suspense and I returned disappointed.
TELL ME NO SECRETS - Okay Fielding, Joy - 3rd in series
People are inexplicably disappearing from Chicago prosecutor Jess Koster's life. First her mother vanished without a trace eight years ago. And now a client, the victim of a brutal, sadistic rapist, is also missing. Someone is disrupting Jess's neat, ordered existence with chaos and terror. And from the shadow of her past, a maniac is watching her . . .stalking her -- until there is no one Jess can trust her mysterious tormentor is perilously close -- and that the next person to vanish from the face of the Earth will be Jess Koster.
So incredibly non-descript in writing that I forgot what it had been about within a week. Once I re-read the description it clicked. Oh yeah, the murder mystery with the obvious ending that you can see coming from a couple chapters in. Stories like this are a dime a dozen and aren't worth a readers time. Give me a story with actual depth and characters that are more than poorly developed stereotypes and I'll give you some of my hard earned time.
Fielding writes zippy suspense novels similar to those of Mary Higgins Clark. They aren't the works of brilliance of Mary Stewart, but they're diverting entertainment about women in peril.
I enjoyed the vast majority of this book even though I did not particularly like the main character. She was a woman with some real problems but she did come across as very likable. Up until the end of the book I found it quite enjoyable but in the last few pages it sort of seemed to fall apart. Everything seemed to be resolved far too quickly.
Joy Fielding doesn't disappoint. I have read many of her thrillers over the years and this book like all her others are page turning psychological thrillers that keep you riveted right to the very end.
I felt like the beginning and middle of the book were really slow and that it didn’t really hook me until the end. The end of the book is shocking but pretty good. I wish it continued a little bit more after all the chaos so you can read about how the main character handled everything afterwards.
holy **** yes!! I thrifted this book & it was my first Joy Fielding novel so I had no expectations. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. I loved this book. It made my top two for the year
I started this and enjoyed the first half but slowly. Then about halfway through, it got where I hated to put it down! I figured some of it out, but it didn't play the way I expected.
