Everyone knows that I’m a sucker for these types of novels and that maybe the reason why I was expecting so much more from The Emo and The Jock. Yes, I loved the plot since in this case; the jock was the smart one while the emo needed the help to pass math. The love story instantly pulled me in and soon I found myself loving the characters and story line.

There are just two things that I didn’t like about this story. One was the fact that the writer referred to Evan and Cole as the emo and the jock so many times. I wondered why she chose to do that since it did flow with the story well. Another thing I dislike was the fact that we never found out why Evan’s father abused him they way he did. He told Evan that it was his fault that his mother died at childbirth, but later, we find out that she died in a car crash and Evan was left to his care. So, why would he treat him the way he did? Evan was the last reminiscence of his wife. He should have treated him like his most precious possession. Why the abuse?

Overall, it was an enjoyable read and I would totally recommend it since it does not follow the traditional nerd/jock love story which I happen to love. It is spanking new and fresh and very well written by N. Phillips.

So, uh, wow. This started out really bad for me. I get the stereotype, but it felt like the author was trying to beat me over the head with it. The characters have names. I don't need them referred to as "emo" and "jock" repeatedly. The characterizations should be enough description. Also, the writing was too simplistic at times, well most of the time. I do think the relationship was built pretty reasonably, but I just didn't find myself really attached to either character. Even with all that though, this was probably headed for a 2.5 rating. However, the Charlie situation towards the end blew out all my what the ever living fuck signals, and I just couldn't. I can't. This is the 4th YA m/m novel that has had this type of situation in it that I've read in probably the last 6th months. It does nothing for the story but steer it towards ridiculousness. Do I think it can be written in and done well? Sure, but I've yet to seen it done so. At least not in the m/m genre. This is really disappointing because opposites attract and enemies to lovers are my favorite tropes in books. I"m not going to write this author off though. I think with some great content editing future books have the potential to turn out great. This one just didn't work for me on several levels.

For a great review though, check out Nik's. She obviously had similar problems as I did, but enjoyed it a bit better.

I loved this story. The plot has been used before in movies and other romance novels but I love it anyway.

Evan lives in a trailer park and is abused by his alcoholic ass of a dad. Cole has it all, gorgeous, super smart, tall, football star and very rich with parents who travel a lot and just compensate their son with money. Evan is failing math and Cole who has had a crush on emo Evan jumps at the chance to tutor. Both characters are 18 and at their senior year in high school. Conflict comes in the form of a psycho ex who is understandably bitter bec Cole never loved him.

Cole is sweet attentive and caring and Evan blossoms under his care! Happy that Evan has someone to take care and love him now.

Some reviewers complained of the overuse of the words 'emo' and 'jock' for the MCs, and they are absolutely right. It got to be a bit much and I was literally waiting for the next time one of those two words was used for an MC as I was reading.
The storyline is hurt/comfort/abuse meets a YA Cinderfella and opposites attract with a crazy ex-stalker thrown in for good measure, it could have been better, I didn't connect or care for Cole and Evan as much as i wanted to, but I liked it well enough that I'm going to pick up the short sequel.

Usually if I don't put any stars on the book well, that means that book is just not my type of book and no way am i reading it again.. One thing that totally totally puts me off is when Charlie said the 3 words Cole immediately break the relationship.. What was he doing with Charlie for two years?? Don't tell me there's not even love during the two years.. That's what turns me off immediately.. I actually felt sad for Charlie.. Well, its only my opinion and I just don't like this kind of storyline.. I don't mind if they broke off because of cheating or abuse or even mental abuse but this kind of breaking off is just I don't know unacceptable.. Charlie even had dreams of being together with Cole forever.. I love the cover though!! =)

Much like the mixing of two of your favorite foods that would never seemingly go well with each other until you give it a shot and suddenly discover that it the next best thing since sliced bread, there is something equally amazing about putting together two characters who couldn't be more opposite and finding them falling for each other. The story of the Emo and the Jock is just like that.

Meet the Emo: Evan Harris. He is a loner and the only emo in a small town school. He lives with his deadbeat father who uses him as a punching bag. He's artistic. He works at a music store. And he is failing Algebra.

Enter the Jock: Cole Morgan. He's the school's star football player. He is gay but has not come out except to his ex-boyfriend, Charlie. His family is rich, but his parents are too busy to spend much time with him. He excels at Algebra and just became Evan's personal tutor. Oh, and I forgot to mention, Cole has had a faraway crush on Evan for the past couple of years.

Rather quickly, Evan and Cole form a friendship: these two seemingly different boys realize they have more in common with each other than meets the eye. Evan takes well to the tutoring, but starts to wonder why, when he has always been seemingly straight, Cole causes him to have butterflies in his stomach. Evan begins to evaluate his romantic feelings for Cole, and before long, Evan is experiencing many firsts with Cole (hubba hubba!).

The development of both a friendship and a romantic relationship between Evan and Cole is very, very sweet. But while this takes place with the boys in high school, this is not a Young Adult book. Moments between these two fellows are very intense and quite hot! And there is something even sexier when at least one of the guys is experiencing everything for the first time.

Everything cannot be all rainbows for these guys, however - Cole's crazy ex-boyfriend, Charlie won't allow it. He is possessive, irrational, continues to swim in a famous Egyptian river, and is just plain psychotic. His actions are a bit ridiculous and just a *tad* over-the-top for a scorned ex-lover, but sadly there are some high-schoolers these days that do behave in such deranged ways. I do have to say, however, my inner bitch was happy and thankful for one thing that Charlie did. At least he did one good thing.

So, going back to that recipe analogy, if you are looking for a sweet story about young love that defies the rigid boundaries of defined character aspects, (much like taking the salty goodness of bacon and dipping it into the uber sweetness of chocolate), and you don't mind a bit of ridiculousness (because, really, who would have previously thought bacon and chocolate could work together?), The Emo and The Jock is just for you. Try it while eating chocolate covered bacon, and I guarantee you'll enjoy both.

I liked this book but there were a few niggles. First, I found the constant reference to the two main characters as "the emo" and "the jock" to be way over used. I understand that we are working with stereotypes here but goodnight.. Second, while some of the writing was quite good, I thought the majority was a bit too simplistic. Alot of potential here but it fell a little short for me. Third, the major point of angst (Charlie) I honestly thought it was a bit overdone and didn't really feel much tension, especially when I felt like the author was trying to make it tense.

Like I said, tons of potential here but just didn't follow through on it. With that being said, I would probably give this author another try to see if they were able to work out some of the kinks..

2.5 stars rounded up because for once the jock wasn't questioning his sexuality and was tutoring the emo guy but the rest of the plot was too soap opera like for my taste.

3.5 stars, I was so excited for this story because the idea sounded like just what I was in the mood for. The story was good but I really was looking for more angst and it was short so you didn't have much time to get into the characters. All in all a good read because it kept my interest enough.

I’m a total sucker for books with the opposite attract theme. I knew by reading the blurb that I wanted to read this book, so when I received it to read and review, I quickly pushed everything aside and read it. I’m glad I did because I enjoyed watching the heroes, Evan and Cole’s relationship develop from friends to lovers as the book progressed.

Life isn’t easy for Evan. His father is both mentally and physically abusive toward him, so he avoids being home whenever he can. Unfortunately for Evan, High School also isn’t a picnic for him either. He doesn’t have many friends and is often poked fun out because of the way he dresses and his quiet disposition. To make matters even worse, Evan is failing math, and when his teacher suggests that he is tutored by a fellow classmate, or fail the class, he knows he has no choice but to follow his teacher’s suggestion.

Evan is shocked when his tutor ends up being the very popular jock, Cole, and he’s even more surprised to find out that Cole isn’t only a nice, likeable person…he’s gay AND attracted Evan too. As Cole starts to tutor Evan the two teenagers become close and they’re soon developing a strong friendship between them. Before they know it, they have fallen for each other and for the first time in years, Evan feels safe and wanted being with Cole. But, a stalker isn’t happy about their relationship and soon both of them are in danger of their very lives. Will they be able to survive the stalker and continue to build a solid foundation of love and friendship between them?

I really enjoyed this book. I thought both Evan and Cole were interesting characters and I liked them both immediately. I felt sorry for Evan’s home life and wanted to hug him because of his pain and lonely existence. I did admire Evan’s strength and determination to get through school and make a better life for himself. I also liked Cole’s character too. He’s stubborn, sexy and smart and once he sets his mind on something, he’s determined to have it. I liked his obvious perusal of Evan and I also appreciated how he stepped in and kept Evan safe. I thought Evan and Cole were a great couple together and I enjoyed the chemistry between them.

Even though I’ve read this type of storyline before I still really liked the story. I thought it was an interesting twist that it is the Jock that is the tutor and not the quiet guy. I also thought Evan’s dad was absolutely horrible and I wanted to pull him out of the written pages and smack him upside the head myself! Evan’s abuse was heartbreaking at times, and I thought it was pretty well-written. Because of this abuse, it surprised me he wasn’t as traumatized more than he was. I would have liked to see him and Cole work through the consequences of that abuse a little more, but I still really enjoyed the story.

This is the first book I’ve read by N. Phillips and it won’t be my last! I enjoyed the easy style of writing the author has and the loveable characters that N. Phillips created. I’m looking forward to reading more books written by this author in the future and recommend this book for those readers who enjoy good opposites attract story.

Well, this one had a rough start... and boy could I have gone crazy with the highlighter on those grammatical errors! I was really looking forward to this story... loved the setting and the fact that the author is from West Virginia also... but I was about halfway through before I really got into the flow of this author's writing style! I think Ms. Phillips could have made better word choices at times, but overall I enjoyed the story! There were a couple of unexpected twists and turns, each one would pop up just in time to drag me back into the story right when I was beginning to think that I might jump over to check on my Facebook page! :P

Even though I was slightly disappointed with this read, I still find myself wanting to give this author another try... so I am sure that I will be popping one of her stories up on my reader in the very near future! :D

Though I have to agree with the other reviewers that the use of the terms jock and emo were not only overused, but used awkwardly, I still loved this story.

I am a sucker for the stories of overcoming your past to find a better future. The harder the bumps, the better I feel when that happy ending comes. I guess it comes from knowing enough people who have gone through the same things, or similar.

I definitely will recommend this story to others.

This one started off rocky for me, but I'm glad I stuck with it. The first few chapters read stitlted, and I felt like the author was re-telling something instead of just letting the story flow naturally. Caught instances of author intrusion, but it worked out and I enjoyed it so we're all good. Good story.

This story is to simple and to bland. I didn't really connect with Evan or Cole. I admit, the way it started it did pull me in the story, but I read other books with same topic, and as such it became boring. The emotions between both MC's weren't real in my book.

Plenty of high school drama of the boy who just doesn't seem to fit in and the Jock who loves him. Evan just doesn't fit in, particularly since he's gone for the appearance of the EMO. Cole is the star quarterback in the school and could have his choice of partners, but he's always been drawn to Evan. When he's asked to tutor Evan in math, he seizes the opportunity to pursue Evan. Evan's home life is less than ideal and he is afraid that if he shares the information about his home life that Cole will run screaming away. Despite everything he feels an attraction to Cole and call definitely feels an attraction to him. Cold is dealing with a jealous EX who was determined to get him back. Needless to say the drama creates a very compelling read.

Listo.

This was a good high school new adult book. I say new adult because it has explicit material. A lot of reviewers complained about the way the author kept referring to the characters as "the Emo" and " the Jock". I can see what they're saying, but it didn't bother me too much. I thought the relationship between the two leads was very sweet. I loved how "the Jock" had a crush on "the Emo" for years and framed his picture, then got so flustered about it.

The whole plot line with "the Villian" aka "the jock's" ex was really strange, though. The jock should have got a restraining order or something against this guy. I mean, it was kind of rape, the way Charlie first slept with the jock, because the jock was so drunk. But the jock seemed okay with that and entered into that half hearted friends with benefits thing with Charlie. The jock really didn't handle things well with that whole relationship.

And the way things ended with the emo's dad was a bit too convenient.

But I was definitely entertained and will probably read more by this author.

I really enjoyed the idea of this story- the emo outcast type and the jock type, falling in love. The jock doing the one chasing for once was great. Watching them connect was great.

But then there's the bad. First off, the editing was horrible. Wrong words, and lots of words were just missing letters. It just needed some work. Then there was Charlie. I think his crazy was just shoved in there to produce more drama, and the story didn't really need it. I think it would have worked much better to have Charlie be just your run of the mill ex scheming to get him back, rather than have him be flat out crazy, doing the things that he did. The story just would have been better off without that part.

But all in all, I still enjoyed the story, and will probably check out more by this author in the future.
