A second chance romance with all the feels. The second chance is amplified by the grief the FMC is going through - and while she’s trying to mend her heart. For anyone who’s lost someone - the author delivered it with sense of realism that you’ll connect with.
The last 30% of the book really picks up and is a sprint to the end.

Binding by S.J. Sastre released today and I was hooked from the very beginning! Think FAE meets mafia, soulbonds and handguns.
The story follows Elaine, our perfectly broken (yet utterly badass) FMC. Hey, you would be too if you discovered that the person you loved with every fiber of your being had died. Except, he didn't.
All this time, he was alive. The whirlwind of emotions, from anger and betrayal to overwhelming relief, was well written. S.J. Sastre does a great job balancing a fast-paced, engaging storyline that keeps you turning page after page while writing characters that were real.
And can we talk about the sisterhood between Elaine and Moira? The two calling each other "puts" (iykyk 🤭) had me smiling and nodding along. Their bond felt so genuine and relatable, especially since my closest friends are my sisters.
Then there's Darian, our MMC. Strong, possessive, and quite frankly, he doesn't f*ck around. You'll love him. Trust me.
My only problem now? Waiting for the next book because after that ending, I'm going to need some answers!!

The setup for this book is wild, and the emotional payoff hits exactly where it should. Elaine has spent six years grieving her dead boyfriend, Darian, only to run right into him during a bachelorette trip to the Capitol. Turns out his death was faked because of a massive power struggle run by his uncle, and Elaine gets pulled straight into a mess of ancient magic and political chaos.
I loved the spice and how it was a fantasy with world-building but set in a modern era. The second-chance dynamic here is fantastic because the history between them feels so heavy. Darian is incredibly protective and possessive, and watching them navigate all those past secrets while stuck in forced proximity creates a great slow burn. Elaine's best friend, her chosen sister Moria, is the exact ride-or-die bestie everyone needs in their corner. The plot manages a lot of dark, intense themes and heavy grief without slowing down the actual momentum. If you love a tense fantasy romance with a plot that keeps you guessing, this is a really solid choice.

This book really drew me in. It follows Elaine, a woman who has been through insane heartbreak. I could really feel how much she was hurting, even when she was trying to hide it. She found a real family with her friends and it was proven with how much she puts them first. I loved the MMC as well. I will not name him because of spoilers, but you can really see the love he has for Elaine through his actions.
The world building in this book was great. I love that it is setting up for more in the next books, explaining why the world is the way it is. The twists towards the end, I honestly did not see coming. And just when you think it can't get any worse, it does. I cannot wait to see what the next book brings!

This felt like a Mafia romance in a romantasy setting. I enjoyed the second chance romance in this and the storyline was interesting. The pacing felt a little wonky personally. I do wish there was more world building, but that’s is the fantasy reader in me. Not a big fan of the hitting in this either. I understand the FMC was upset her man left but, we don’t need to be slapping so much.

I enjoyed this story, the fated mates theme was strong but it left me with a huge why towards the end. The driving force between an action that took place…I felt like something pivotal was missing. Maybe I missed it. The vibes were there but it just didn’t take off the way I wanted.

Besties, you know I don’t don’t sugar coat things and I give you my thoughts straight up, and let me tell you, this one did a number on me - but in the best way! Absolutely a sleeper hit of the year for me! 😍
This one had it all, emotional trauma, betrayal, healing, found family, political games, plot twists left and right, and under it all, a love that’s going to redefine soul mates.
For six years Elaine has been haunted by the tragedy that ripped away someone so precious to her - I loved her for how beautifully broken she was but also how she fought and clawed her way back to herself. Darian holds more secrets than Fort Knox - his story really is about the lies we tell to protect the ones we love, but with consequences of epic proportions.
This was a fast paced, wild ride with so many things I just didn’t see coming and let me tell you - I. ATE. THAT. SH*T. UP. 🍽️ It’s gritty, magnetic, and at times you’ll forget that you’re actually reading a dark Romantasy because it feels urban, but it’s not. The world building S.J. Sastre accomplishes here is chefs kiss 🤌🏻💋
How many times can one person be broken and put back together and how truly strong can two people’s bond actually be? Guess you’re just going to have to read Elaine and Darian’s story to find out - but trust me, you’re going to love every second of it. 🖤

SOMEONE HAS BEEN READING MY WISHLIST.
And while the worldbuilding introduces plenty of moving pieces, I liked the ambition of combining the political storyline with something so emotionally personal.
Because the stakes aren’t only about who holds power.
They’re also about what those struggles have cost Elaine and Darian.
And what they might still lose.
One of the other lovely elements was Elaine’s relationship with Moira.
WE LOVE A RIDE-OR-DIE BESTIE.
Especially in a story filled with secrets, danger, and men making decisions that deserve a formal complaint.
Having a strong female friendship adds warmth to a world where trusting the wrong person could have devastating consequences.
And I appreciate when a heroine has meaningful relationships outside her romantic life.
Because sometimes the person keeping you grounded isn’t the dangerous man you’re in love with.
IT’S YOUR BEST FRIEND LOOKING AT YOU LIKE, GIRL, PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY WE’RE INVOLVED IN THIS NONSENSE.
The found-family elements help balance the darker themes, too.
Beneath the magic and political tension is a story about belonging, loyalty, and finding people who will stand beside you when everything becomes complicated.
And Elaine’s journey isn’t simply about choosing whether to love Darian again.

I particularly enjoyed the emotional contrast between the romance and the fantasy adventure.
One moment, we’re dealing with the very human pain of losing someone.
The next, we’re navigating dangerous magical secrets and political schemes.
THE EMOTIONAL WHIPLASH HAS ENTERED THE CHAT.
Now, this is definitely a story that builds toward bigger developments.
The final portion brings a noticeable increase in momentum as the intrigue and revelations begin coming together.
And I appreciated having more going on than the romantic reunion alone.
Because while I love a possessive hero as much as the next morally questionable reader, I also need a plot worth investing in.
GIVE ME THE OBSESSION, ABSOLUTELY. BUT GIVE ME SOMETHING FOR THESE PEOPLE TO ACTUALLY FIGHT FOR.
The mix of grief, betrayal, loyalty, and supernatural danger made this a solid introduction to S.J. Sastre’s writing.
And while it wasn’t a perfect five-star obsession for me, I genuinely enjoyed what the story offered.
Especially its central question:

Beneath the magic and political tension is a story about belonging, loyalty, and finding people who will stand beside you when everything becomes complicated.
And Elaine’s journey isn’t simply about choosing whether to love Darian again.
It’s also about finding her footing in a reality she never expected to face.
I particularly enjoyed the emotional contrast between the romance and the fantasy adventure.
One moment, we’re dealing with the very human pain of losing someone.
The next, we’re navigating dangerous magical secrets and political schemes.
THE EMOTIONAL WHIPLASH HAS ENTERED THE CHAT.
Now, this is definitely a story that builds toward bigger developments.
The final portion brings a noticeable increase in momentum as the intrigue and revelations begin coming together.
And I appreciated having more going on than the romantic reunion alone.
Because while I love a possessive hero as much as the next morally questionable reader, I also need a plot worth investing in.
GIVE ME THE OBSESSION, ABSOLUTELY. BUT GIVE ME SOMETHING FOR THESE PEOPLE TO ACTUALLY FIGHT FOR.
The mix of grief, betrayal, loyalty, and supernatural danger made this a solid introduction to S.J. Sastre’s writing.
And while it wasn’t a perfect five-star obsession for me, I genuinely enjoyed what the story offered.
Especially its central question:
What happens when the person you’ve spent years learning to live without suddenly becomes someone you might lose all over again?

S.J. Sastre is a new-to-me author, and this was an enjoyable introduction to a different corner of my beloved dark romance universe.

I am grateful to the author and Rattle the Stars PR for the opportunity to read this ARC.
If you enjoy mafia romance but want an urban fantasy setting then think you would enjoy this book. Ultimately, it wasn’t for me for that exact reason, but I think there is an audience for this kind of book. While not a literal mafia, the ruling families of this realm function like a cross between the mob and royalty so the vibes lean more criminal underworld and less fantasy-but-in-a-city.
Pros
The concept for this world is an interesting one. The world is divided into three parts: the fae realm, the human realm, and the “Halfie” realm for people who aren’t full-blooded fae. The human realm is our real world and we are unaware of the other two realms. The book takes place in the Halfie realm which is a fun twist on the usual fae world/human world divide. I think the reasons for the Halfies leaning so much into human culture could have been fleshed out more. For example, the FMC, Elaine, and her best friend, Moira, took Spanish as an elective so they speak Spanish to one another, but there is no explanation as to why English is the predominant language (or if they even are speaking English).
I also like Sastre’s take a on fated mates. The nuances of the bonds and how they are strengthened or can be broken brings something new to a table full of “the fates said so and now we’re in love” fantasy. The separation of marriage and Binding is similarly a good concept.
Cons
I’ve already noted that this book wasn’t for me, so I don’t want to spend to long on the things that didn’t work for me. The things that were cons for me, but might not be for other readers were:
• The FMC being not just mean, but straight up abusive to people when she’s upset or can’t handle her own emotions. This includes intentionally saying things to people she cares about that she know will hurt them because of her “dark and twisty” side.
• The MMC being an unhinged psycho to the point of threatening to kill the people trying to help him. Like I love a good “touch her and die” trope, but the in book explanations for the extent of his behavior didn’t save this one for me
The weaknesses that I think are more universally applicable are:
• The pacing – it’s a common issue, but the book starts with an exposition dump and the dual POV mystery is spoiled if you have read the blurb so there is no tension. It takes a long time to build to some action and then spends a really prolonged period of time focusing on two separate characters’ torture which kills the momentum
• The plot holes - I have a dozen notes that are just “what about x from a few chapters ago?” or “there was a different explanation for this earlier on” or “what???”
• I was promised a knife throwing FMC and she doesn’t learn to throw knives until the final chapter of the book at which point she learns off screen and then is an expert at it immediately which is a personal pet peeve but I think if you advertise a knife throwing FMC then she should being doing that from the beginning or learn early in the book
Conclusion
For a debut novel, I think this is a respectable starting point. Most of the issues are things I have seen many first-time authors struggle with and every other element of my rating is just down to my taste. I do think the advertising misses the mark here by leading with calling it a romantic fantasy. There is romance and technically the setting is urban fantasy, but I think this book would find a better home with a mafia romance crowd that likes a little bit of magic too.

In all honesty, I was leaning towards a 2.5, but I rounded up to 3 stars strictly because the core premise had immense potential. Unfortunately, this book is the textbook definition of a brilliant concept let down by very poor execution.

The first half of the book was a painful struggle to get through due to choppy, abrupt scene transitions. The narrative constantly jerks from a room to a garden, back to the room, then suddenly to a bar, and onward to another location entirely without giving the reader any room to breathe, visualise the surroundings, or connect with the setting.
Compounding this is the complete lack of foundational worldbuilding. In the first instalment of a fantasy series, you expect the author to set the stage—delivering rich background lore, establishing how the world functions, and outlining the mechanics of the magic system. Here, there is virtually none of that. Instead, massive amounts of page space are dedicated to repetitive, hyper-focused internal monologues detailing every fleeting feeling the characters have about everything.
The Characters & Dynamics
The leads felt entirely one-dimensional. They are defined by a single trait and nothing else; there is no genuine character growth, subtle evolution, or psychological depth—either shown in real time or established through backstory. Because of this, they felt unrelatable and, frankly, quite dull.
The central dynamic also completely missed the mark for me. The romance lacked genuine emotional resonance, devolving instead into a toxic, codependent dynamic where both the FMC and MMC behave in ways that feel childish and frustratingly senseless. The only genuinely intriguing figures in the entire narrative were the mysterious Fae, but we are only ever given fleeting glimpses of them.
Tone, Violence & Spice
I was initially drawn to the concept of blending a fantasy setting with mafia-romance tropes, but the delivery fell completely flat. While I never shy away from dark themes or graphic violence in fiction, the heavy focus on extended torture scenes felt entirely gratuitous here—shock value that served very little narrative purpose. As for heat, there is essentially no real spice to speak of (barely a 1 chilli), and the underlying romantic connection was practically non-existent.
Final Thoughts
The plot progression was unfortunately glaringly predictable from early on. While the premise promised high stakes and a unique genre mash-up, the clumsy execution made finishing this a real chore. One book was unfortunately more than enough for me, and I will not be picking up the sequel.

I was really on the fence between 3 and 4 stars with this one, which usually means it’s a 3.5 for me.
Binding was an enjoyable read with an intriguing premise, although I was left wanting a little more from certain aspects of the story.
At its core, it almost felt like a mafia-style story with a fantasy spin: powerful families, politics, betrayal and control, alongside fae, ancient magic, gifts and bindings.
I liked the relationship between Elaine and Darian, particularly the way they pushed each other’s buttons and weren’t afraid to show each other their darker sides. They challenge and provoke each other in ways I’m not sure many other people would tolerate, but there’s an understanding between them that comes from their history and the love that is still there. I did think the second-chance aspect could have been developed a little more, especially given everything that had happened between them.
For me, the first part of the book felt a little jumpy. I wanted more connective tissue between scenes and a deeper understanding of some of the characters’ choices and motivations. A lot of my earlier questions were eventually answered, but some of the reveals felt more like “oh, okay, that explains it” rather than “HOW did I not see that coming?” At times, I could see the pieces being moved into place for a later payoff rather than everything unfolding completely naturally.
I also wanted a little more from the fantasy side. I really liked the ideas surrounding the gifts, magic and binding, but sometimes wished those elements were more deeply woven into the foundations of the story. The underlying plot has such a mafia-esque feel that the fantasy occasionally felt like an added layer rather than something the story couldn’t exist without.
That being said, the final 30% was easily my favourite part. The pacing picked up, things started coming together, and I became much more invested in where the story was heading.
And that ending? I may not have wanted it to happen, but that’s very different from not liking that it happened. It hurt.

Great fast-paced easy read! I finished this in one day with plenty of time to spare. Binding is perfect for lovers of intense bonds, fated mates, resilient FMC’s & the non-squeamish! Both the FMC and MMC are referred to as “dark and twisty” at times, and the latter part of this book is full of plenty of both of those things!
In some ways, this book kind of felt like two books in one, as the first half or so and the second half or so, although connected, have very different pacing and themes. I really connected with the first half of the book and loved the themes of friendship and the realistic, portrayal, grief, and the ways in which the FMC and her best friend connect and relate to one another. Their relationship in the first half of the book was as meaningful to me as her relationship to the MMC.
The stages of reunification between our FMC and MMC and the reestablishment of their relationship, and the discovery of their bond was engaging and interesting. I loved the scenes in the frozen castle. Those were especially endearing and I wish we could’ve had more time before the books big bad came and ruined everything.
Which brings us to the second half of the book, which is really heavy on the dark and twisty, especially in the form of torture, so if that is your jam, you will love this. Definitely not for the faint of heart or super squeamish, but there are some very unique torture scenes that definitely impress.
I liked that even in the darkest parts of the story, our FMC finds ways to stay connected to herself, and never truly gives up hope. She is the definition of resilient. An hour MMC is the definition of determined and willing to do whatever it takes for his woman.
I thought that the separation of fae, “half bloods” and humans was made especially interesting by “The Divide,” which separated the fae from the mixed bloods, and enjoyed the additional revelations of what all that entailed as the book went on. I imagine book 2 well expand on that further, which is exciting.

We follow Elaine as she discovers that the man she loved, Darian, who she believed had been dead for six years, is actually still alive. I had such a hate-love relationship with this man. The pain he caused Elaine had me absolutely hating him for a while. I understood his reasoning, and I could see why he made the choices he did, but that did NOT stop me from being mad at him. 😂 He had me emotionally conflicted the entire time, and honestly, I loved that.
But Elaine broke me. Her character development was one of my favorite parts of this book. Watching her strength grow throughout the story was astonishing. She goes through so much, yet somehow continues to find pieces of herself she didn't know were there. The woman she becomes—and the strength she shows—made her incredibly special to me.
And then we have THAT ENDING.

This book was really fun! It got me out of a reading slump, so it deserves all the love in the world. I loved kinda the intricacies of this world. I really enjoyed how it read like an urban fantasy with mafia vibes. I really, really liked that. The romance was very interesting, and I loved the concept of the Binding, which really held a lot of interesting things. I really enjoyed the characters as well! Our female main character reads quite different to what I have read before. She reminds me a bit of Bryce and Alein mixed. I really enjoyed her monologues, and her cussing in Spanish was just priceless. She was very badass, and her character development is incredible. There is definitely a lot of depth and layers to her character, which I liked a lot. Our male main character was a lot to handle. I enjoyed their relationship and loved how spice was very minimal and wasn't too overused. I think it's just me speaking, but I am not a huge fan of overly possessive men. It just doesn't do it for me, but I can understand that this concept works well in this situation. His inner monologue was a little bit too much for me, which is okay. I can see how people would swoon for him, but it just didn't do it for me. That's totally okay! The writing was still really fun and easy to read. I really enjoyed how this book helped me get out of a slump. It was quick, easy, and an enjoyable read altogether! The side characters were enjoyable, and this story sounds like it will be so fun to continue once book 2 and the other books come out. I can't wait to see what more is in store for us! Binding is a book that is absolutely heartbreaking and utterly gut-wrenching. S.J. Sastre did an exceptional job writing this dark Romantasy.
The world building is extraordinary, the yearning and the longing exuded from every page. The banter between these two characters is remarkable.
You can feel the pain, the sorrow and the grief throughout the whole book, they grieve a person, they grieve a love and the loss of a live that never existed.
Darian lied and sacrificed everything to ensure happiness and peace to the love of his life, he endured so much pain in order for her to be safe, when that became intolerable, Darian does everything in his power to reclaim all the years that they lost.
Elaine and Darian starts unraveling the secrets and the motives of those who kept them apart, they suffer together and suffer apart, the despair is unavoidable and so deeply unbearable.
Darian is the perfect morally gray character that will do anything to protect of who he loves, he doesn’t know any mesure and he will not stop until he gets what he wants. Elaine is unapologetically her, she is smart and fiercely protective of the people she loves.
One of the things that I loved the most is that despite everything they go through, they never lose hope and faith, they never yielded, they never broken.
My favorite part of the book is the certainty that they found their fated mate, their soulmate, the level of devotion between Elaine and Darian, they both are tether by this invisible bond that no matter what is unbreakable.
And don’t forget to trust but verify. Trust this review but verify by reading Binding.

Review of ARC read
This book mixes fantasy elements (Fae and Halflings being the protagonists of the story) with a mafia set up inclusive of fake deaths and underground power plays; and honestly I am here for it!
I think the idea of mixing both worlds is quite smart, although reading the book I did notice a line here and there dividing areas where the mafia elements were more prominent, against other part of the books that were mainly focused on the fantasy element. While I think the two worlds could have been blended a bit more, the result was a complete new take on the genre, and overall it worked 😊
The MMC fits the underground boss vibes perfectly, and I did like his character a lot. He obviously made some questionable choices, but you can also see why he did. As the story goes on his “I would burn the world for you” side comes out more and more.
The FMC is also a great character, even though I have to admit I did not fully connect with her more aggressive side. While I completely understand her grief and hurt, she does enjoy hurting people to make a point, and she’s also comfortable in raising her hands (which is something I personally can’t relate to).Still, I enjoyed her character and I did enjoy seeing how she processes her grief, while also coming to terms with the new reality she’s thrown into.
I liked the side characters and the overall world building too.
As this is not a standalone we clearly have a lot more to uncover, but as a first book in the series you have a perfectly rounded set up by the end of the story.

5⭐️ This was such a fascinating storyline that had me hooked from the blurb! The pacing was amazing and I loved the flow of events as we got to know the characters more. There is definitely a beauty to learning about a character as they presently are and who they were to other characters prior to the start of the story. Elain is very complex because she did have to go through a traumatic event by losing the love of her life, but I love that she has a best friend/sister that helped her through it. Her reaction to Darian's sudden reappearance in her life is very warranted, and honestly, I probably would've been more upset if it had been me lol. And speaking of Darian, I liked him from the beginning, and even though I would've been angry in Elain's position, I was immediately rooting for him to win her over.
The worldbuilding here is also really creative firstly, because there is the division between the Fae, humans, and "halfies" but also because of the governmental systems within Kalmain. I did like the insights we got into how it all worked and am looking forward to learning more as the books progress. I also love the magic system and am really excited to see how it grows.
I think the most heart-wrenching portion of the story was the last 30% of the book and I could not put it down if I wanted to. There is simply so much to love about this story and I am so so excited to see where book 2 leads!

Binding starts off by throwing us straight into the unending grief that our FMC, Elaine, has been unable to move past since Darian died. I loved how raw and real this grief felt. It was twisted and sewn through every aspect of her life, and I think it was so important that we got glimpses into her past to truly understand just how deep that grief went. You could really feel how much his loss had shaped who she had become.
Turns out though... Darian is alive! (Don’t worry, this isn’t a spoiler. It’s literally in the book description.)
I honestly wish this book was 100 pages longer. I was SO intrigued by the world, the magic, and the characters, but I just felt like we only scratched the surface of what could have been some fantastic world-building. I wanted to know more about the world(s), I wanted to know more about the lore and how they came to be, and I wanted more time to really understand the magic and everything happening around Elaine. There was so much potential here, and I kept finding myself wishing we could dig just a little deeper. I JUST WANTED MORE.
But let me tell you, the tension between Elaine and Darian was definitely A-tier. The dynamic between them had me very invested, and there was definitely enough tension to keep me turning the pages.
If you’re looking for a quick fantasy read with delicious tension, touch-her-and-die vibes, with a bit of suffering and torture, this book might be for you!

This book was a fast, fun read! I loved it from chapter 1. Dark and twisty, it was a great contemporary romantasy. There were several surprises for me. I love Moira, and Darian is so protective. There are some dark scenes, but I don’t feel like they were too much. I look forward to reading book 2, thank you so much for the opportunity to read your amazing book!
World- I love the hard divide between the human/half world and the Fae world. The different areas seem so cool, with seasonal specific courts.

Then there's Darian. I was desperate to understand his side of the story and the choices that led to some truly heartbreaking moments. Let me tell you, I was not prepared. Darian is fiercely protective, unwaveringly determined, and radiates "burn the world down for her" energy.

I was not expecting this at all. This book took me by surprise. I was hooked right away. It’s about Elaine who lost the love of her life Darian 6 years ago. She is still reeling from her grief but is trying to be supportive to her best friend’s upcoming wedding. She goes into the Capital for her friends bachelorette party and the story takes off from there! You have humans with magic abilities, fae, grief/loss, fated mates, touch her and d** and so much more.
Once I started this book, I just wanted to keep reading. It was a quicker read for me because I couldn’t put in down. It has a lot of dark moments but the author was able to add some humor in the banter as well. I thought that added a nice reprieve from some of the darker scenes. The friendship between Elaine and Moira was such a good part of the book and then of course Darian.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a dark fantasy romance. Check your triggers. I am so excited to see where this story goes in the next book.

What an emotional journey this book takes you on, with some very deep lows. SJ does an amazing job of conveying palpable emotions as she weaves a story of immense heartache and pain, while taking you through finding your way back, to be brought down again. My heart broke so many times for our FMC. There are beautiful, fun moments in between all of the intense situations. The villain is ruthlessly brutal and completely depraved. I cant wait to continue the story

ARC Review: 'Binding' by SJ Sastre
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 stars)
I went into this ARC not sure what to expect, but I was hooked! The first chapter really set the scene, and drew us into the book and it didnt let go! It was fast paced, intense and intriguing and I loved every second.
The relationships between all the characters were so well written and fleshed out. I absolutely loved the sisterhood / friendship between Elaine and Moira, and how it wasnt sacrificed for the romantic ones. Elaine's character development throughout the book was amazing, she goes through so much and her imperfections are what makes her such a strong character.
The world building is trickled through the book without being overwhelming, giving us just the right amount of information as and when we needed it. I felt it was a refreshing new take on the fantasy backdrop we are used to. I can't wait to continue with the series and learn more about this fascinating world!
