Warlock #4

Warlock: Book 4

Rate this book
I survived my first year at Witch College, so I figured summer break would be the easy part — yeah, right.

I've got a coven that keeps growing, a Family name older than most of the Council, and a mother who's been alive this whole time — somewhere past a bridge in West Virginia she went off of twenty years ago.

Chasing that trail means werewolves, a Family that trades its own daughters like stock options, and a night in a Louisiana graveyard cutting a deal with the dead.

Second year at Willowmere isn't any calmer. Gabriel's still out there doing something worse than killing witches. The Patriarchy didn't end in that farmhouse. And the oldest, hungriest witch in the old country has decided my coven owes her a debt none of us agreed to — and she's coming to collect.

My coven is stronger than ever, and I'm going to need every bit of it.

Last year, all I had to do was survive.

This year, I have to be worthy.

My favourite haremlit series, and I'm always happy for another book to come out. This one didn't disappoint; I just love the world the author has built, the characters are all fantastic, his sense of humour really hits the mark for me, and I just really enjoy the story of Noah and his coven.

Especially looking forward to the next book, as they finally go on their overseas trip and we might revisit an old nemesis.

Immaculate as always

I've yet to find another series that has hooked me the way Warlock has in this genre - and if you have suggestions, PLEASE let me know. The romance, the story, the character development; Warlock has enraptured me like no other series has in a long time. It's changed my entire opinion on the entire genre, and I'm grateful.

SPOILER REVIEW!!

When reading book 1 I never thought Cassandra would be one of my favorites. I adore this sisterhood between all of the girls that feels so genuine and so real. I like how Morgan was, since growing up mundane, for her it was more of a mental hurdle to overcome with sharing Noah, and not instantly being okay with everything like how all harems were written. It took time and I love how the sisterhood made her feel despite feeling alone all her life. For a moment I was questioning if she was even going to be marked this book. The never alone note after it finally happened was beautifully heartwarming. This is the first harem that feels more about the individual girls than the MC.

Poor Cassandra is the only that didn't get her marking done the way she want, and when they did the actual ritual for her in the last book was one of my favorite scenes, along with the note for Morgan. I enjoyed Cassandra and Morgan are definitely my favorite pair of interactions.

I also loved how Priscilla and Morgan have a little closer sisterhood since they were the newly joined and spent a lot of time together.

Sam, Cassandra, and Morgan definitely have the most presence, being the most outspoken of the bunch. While Rachel and Priscilla are more reserved, but while Priscilla is a quiet troublemaker, Rachel is a firecracker lol. And I can already see Hannah taking on more of the big sister responsibilities with poor Cassandra.

Now I knew some of the other warlocks were going to be a problem. But I'm so happy this didn't follow the trope of all harems with 97% female cast and make every male character besides the MC just flat out terrible people. I'm excited for Gilbert and Allison. Definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the semester. And can't wait for their adventures the next summer.

I am a little disappointed. It is likely on me since I knew what I was getting with this series, I just wish it would evolve a little. The biggest gripes I have are that this is a story about witches and there is very little discussion on how the magic actually works. So far there are shields, telekinesis and glamours and that is pretty much the extent of what is talked about with magic (except for the resonances). The resonances are how witches gain their mana. If you had a lust resonance, you gain it by doing lustful things. If you had a malice resonance, you gain it by triggering that emotion. I just don't see how that would work though. Wouldn't the magic then decide what type of person you are? Is it something that is assigned to you despite your personality or is it assigned because of who you are as a person?

There are actual parts of the story that are important (Finding Noah's mother, dealing with Gabriel, etc) but most of that part of the story is in the background. The main part of the story is the relationships between Noah and his coven (including witches he wants in his coven). I liked this aspect in the first couple of books but it seems like even after a year of having multiple witches in his bed and his life, Noah still hasn't evolved. He still gets shy and tongue tied when talking to certain witches. He keeps getting told he knows nothing and then still is never told what or how to do anything and he needs to figure it out on his own. Too many stereotypes. Men are terrible communicators but the women aren't going to tell him anything because he should just know. The pregnant witch is very hormonal and eats all the time and that is mostly all she had to contribute to this story. My biggest issue is that Noah has been handling things for a year, he should have changed and gotten better by this point. I know with writing a series you want to keep the characters personalities the same, but you also need them to change a little based on what has already happened.

Overall, this went from a pretty good series to just an okay series. I will still pick up the next book but won't be as interested as I was at the beginning. Maybe things will get better?

As much as I love the worldbuilding and the girls, the main character is still...kinda shitty?

His flaws made sense earlier on but we're at the point where it just gets annoying. Like we've gone from "fish out of water" to "dumb himbo whose only personality traits are worrying about things and fucking up every social interaction" . It'd be nice to see him overcoming the things that other characters have to repeatedly tell him to shut up about. It'd be cool to see some growth. Idk. It just feels like it's getting repetitive.

The spice scenes were...not good. It's basically buildup -> penetration -> fade to black. Which sucks extra considering how central Morgan feels to the story. Idk it just didn't feel like the heart was there

Oh and him talking to his dick is incredibly unfunny and ruins any seriousness or eroticism from any chapter it appears in this book...which is like...a third of them.

I like the story overall I guess and the characters are believable so 3 stars from me.

Well, this was certainly a fun ride! I have really enjoyed this series, and this book was a great addition to the story.

This is one of the rare series where the MC and LIs motivations make sense. Where the characters jump off the page and you feel like you are a ear worm in the MC's head viewing the ongoing events. Where the MC knows little of the witch world, so is forced to rely on his ladies guiding him through things. They keep him humble while building him up. And it all just works so well.

The coven grows by one in this book, with another one queued up, and negotiations for more underway. Morgan is a brat, but we expected that. And her resonance makes perfect sense for her.

I very much look forward to book 5.

Spell Daddy is in Control

Man, there's a huge step forward in content. This edition hits you from several angles. There's a lot going on from Daniel dating his coven and initiate, binding 2 witches and trying to break the Fieldings silence and get Hannah and Brittany for his coven, a European trip and Lamistad meeting are just some of the things that goes on. I definitely loved Felicity coming out of her shell a little more and even Mel starts to show a little more sassiness. I absolutely love this series and don't want it to end!

Tremendous writing

This is simply one of the best stories/series that you can pick up and read! Some might say this is just pure hyperbole, but they would be wrong! I have literally read thousands of books and this series is at the very top tier of quality writing/reading. I am so happy that the author is not going to rush the series to finish, but let us humble readers enjoy to the fullest for several more books.

World building is excellent

This one is good. The author has managed to grow the characters and the world without dropping into the totally unbelievable, which is a thing alot of books do come the book 4. I hope the author can continue this with the books ahead. A very promising series.

Worth the wait

First, I have to say it: Who’s effing idea was it to have SAM write the intro?!?! You had to know that was a bad idea… right?

Anyway, book 4, like the first 3, is a masterpiece of both embracing and puncturing the “male dude in all girl’s magic school” trope.

Kensington follows the rules for these books religiously - yet makes them stand out like Rembrandt given a paint-by-number book and told to “have fun with it”.

Every harem book out there CLAIMS that the women are “unique and their own person”. Yeah, sure they are (not).

But in these books, the women are the whole POINT. Noah’s character is just used as a device to view the crappy world they come from, and the amazing changes he’s helping them bring about.

And, well, his internal dialogues are hilarious.

easily one of my favorite series

Each book from this series goes above and beyond my expectations. I sincerely love the authors writing style, characters and how much effort he puts into the real life and in story lore. I was searching up actual myths and legends at one point. Thank you author for this wonderful novel and hope to read the next soon as it’s ready.

solid book

I was a bit annoyed at the different languages but having what they meant at the end of the chapter was very nice.. it ended up adding depth to all the people. The plot was solid but some of the twists were a bit harder to understand. Really like this series and hope the next book come out faster than this one… (I know that writing good stuff takes time but a guy can hope. lol)

The world building, character development, and relationships are the best in the genre. It's book four with three bound into the coven with many more potential coven members hanging around. Surely the author can't juggle they many characters needing pages, right? Wrong.

I really don't know how Kensington does it, other authors drop characters for books at a time in this genre. Yet, everyone gets the time and pages devoted to them that they deserve.

Then, somehow the plot keeps chugging along while satisfyingly resolving issues, but also adding other issues.

Another fantastic tale

Maiden's sweet toes!? That was good

Book 4 was incredible and even better than I was expecting. I just finished a binge reread of 1 through three and I laughed, cried and loved the whole thing.

These characters are awesome and I love how much screen time they're all getting. The family and bonds are constantly impressing me! I hope he can keep this going!

The writing gets better and better

This story series unexpectedly found two years ago has developed in to a rich storyline with so many wonderful characters. The story has subplots enough, snarky scenes, passionate, fun, and emotional threads. As an ARC reader I still couldn’t wait to read it… again. I think of this as “Adult Harry Potter meets Nora Roberts for Men who dont mind the unexpected cutting of Onions from time to time”

Fantastic Read, Once Again!!

Daniel Kensington has nailed this world. These characters feel real, human, and very relatable. The settings feel like being there sometimes as if he's writing them while actually being there. The events were a little tame but I attribute that to the story pacing, so I'm not going to complain one bit. Can't wait for the next one!

This was pretty sweet. I especially liked the conclave, and really the whole Nawlins section. As usual Noah remains perpetually ignorant and an occasional bitch, but the coven is shaping up. Looking forward to the next crisis.

Priscilla and Morgan for the win

This was my favorite of the series so far. There was more humor and development. The coven is coming along and I thought there would be more trouble made from others. Not that the book needed it. Can't wait for the next.

Slow burn and little real action

This is a really slow burn with very little action. This might be one of those in-between type books in a series. I’m convinced the main character “Warlock Noah” is an idiot and very slow to learn anything. I don’t know why all authors think that making all of there MCs stupid in the beginning is the way to start a series. All it does is frustrate the readers and make us think that the author is an idiot too. This is definitely a Drama and not an action thriller… slow and steady. I like the premise of the series but not the pace, which is almost like torture.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Orphan boy discovers he has magical powers and is sent to wizard school. Sound familiar? As a writer myself, I’ve looked at the Potter books and their multitudinous plot holes and thought ‘I could do better than that!’.
However, there’s a modicum of spice in these books so I have a suspicion that they might have started life on AO3 or Literotica. The latter has a ban on any sexual activity involving minors, so this takes place at a college for witches where everyone is over 18.
Our MMC is a warlock with extraordinary powers (naturally) and is descended from a line of powerful witches (naturally) but is outside the current magical societal structure which is organised around families that consist of one warlock and thirteen witches. Herein lies a significant plot hole.
All children born to warlocks (and their witches) should be subject to the same sex ratio as mundane humanity. There should be twelve unbound warlocks per coven. But it appears not, and, unless I missed it, this is not explained. That many frustrated warlocks roaming around would be a recipe for trouble.
On the plus side, these stories are often funny and very readable. It cannot be stressed enough how important a quality this is in a field overloaded with pretentious waffle. Much of fantasy is impressively stodgy, miring itself in high concepts. Granted the author has chosen one of the easiest and most familiar settings, the boy who is special.
On the down side, it reeks of male wish fulfilment. Powerful? Check. Desirable? Check. Prodigious penis? Check. Harem of beautiful young women with magical powers that want to have sex with you all the time? Check. Lesbian sidekick who likes her BDSM and setting the scene for a hot little FFM tangle at some point. Check, check, check. Actually, given the aforementioned sex ratios there ought to be a lot more lesbianism. Just sayin’
The MMC also breaks the rules again and again, but there are no consequences. “Aw, gee, I gone an’ marked* another li’l cutie! Sorry ‘bout that.” “Never you mind, you’re special.”
*(more male wish fulfilment)
Also, there’s not enough genuine peril. Okay, there is a kidnapping, a murder, the Patriarchy, the vampires, the zombie controlling evil cousin and the weight of the matriarchal witch society, but by the middle of book three, the newly formed coven (MMC 18-19, witches no older than 22) is discussing which private jet to buy/rent…

Noah Ashe grew up in the foster system, mostly focused on getting out and then finding a way to help his friend Morgan. What he found once he "aged out" was that he was in fact a warlock, and an entire world of magic he'd known nothing about was lurking around the edges of the "real" world.

Noah is a very distant ancestor of the powerful Melania Blackwood, who is a very old (like ancient Greece old) and powerful witch. He has been enrolled at Willowmere, a school that is mostly for witches, as warlocks are relatively rare. Initially be accident, Noah began forming a coven of lovely young witches. Now, it's very deliberate as he seeks to add more, protecting them and making them into an actual supportive family. The character interactions are some of the best parts of the series, in my opinion.

In addition to negotiating with powerful families to bring certain witches into his coven, Noah has a good bit else going on. His mother, long thought dead, may in fact just be missing and maybe in trouble, hiding from Noah's evil cousin Gabriel. The Patriarchy, a group of evil men who seek to control witches, are lurking around the edges of things, an ongoing shadowy menace. Morgan has not only turned out to be a witch, but from a very powerful and ancient line, surprising everyone.

One of the big parts of this book is a meeting of the Conclave, the big gathering of witch families, which is held in New Orleans. There's a lot of political infighting, but Noah has chosen both his allies and his witches well, and his newly formed and evolving Blackwood coven scores some wins. Also, back at Willowmere, they have agreed to admit some more warlocks, and there's some setting in, getting to know the new kids, and a bit of unfortunately normal bullying.

I really enjoy this series, and while the world building is fantastic, its the characters and how they relate to each other. They all care about each other and are trying to help each other. Noah is a college age kid who has the great fortune to have some stunning women in his life, and he's very aware of how lucky he is, and that they're all people, not numbers to add to his group. He's a great guy really makes the series.

I am very much looking forward to the next book, and already dreading that, last I knew, the author is planning on stopping at 13.

You got me...

I really don't like books written in first person. I was excited when I saw this title pop up in my library - because i remembered enjoying the series - but then, the first person... Anyway, I powered through and yeah. The story is really good. The author has (a shouldn't be, but is) rare gift of giving characters individual voices and personalities (could use a refresh on visual descriptions - little lazy there). This book is actually full of funny, and sweet (but not sappy) moments. It doesn't have the action of the last book, but the break from the tension was pretty enjoyable. Highly recommend. Also, the bonus chapter is actually worth reading.

The other reviews have already outlined beautifully how... well... beautiful this book and series is. As others have said, I will also say that this series and this book in particular has touched me in a way no other series of any genre has.

The mythologies and spins on them are marvelous, the world truly feels real and the characters are not characters, they are persons, alive, magnetic, marvelous.

The story is excellent, the feel is excellent, the pacing is excellent, the experience is ecstatic.

Bravo and please keep them coming.

I'm tired of the MC. He's ignorant, we get that. But he can't be ignorant for 4 fucking books. Stop. He's had time, he has a full harem to support him and yet they don't teach him anything unless he EXPLICITELY asks, which is not how learning is done. And then there's his own decisions which make no sense - why would he spill his secrets at the smallest of provocation? Why is he so weak that he can't handle a single conversation with an old lady? Why is Morgan such a bitch? I finished the book but will not continue. Also he talks to his dick now and even named it. I can't take it anymore. I hate this MC.

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that book 4 had come out just as I was finishing a different book

Daniel has crafted a wonderful world and lore for modern day witches that keeps me coming back for more.

This series was my first dip into haremlit and I could not have picked a better series.

Storylines progress, but it doesn't feel like we have 'forgotten' the characters that came before, which I appreciate.

This series continues to be a recommendation for anyone curious into the genre.

This is the best entry into the series so far. It has a bit of everything you could want, action, political intrigue, spice. Each of the characters really got to shine in this book. That was one of the benefits of this book sidelining a couple of prospects let each of the girls really shine and develop. Honestly the only real complaint I have is there could have been more. I'm very excited to see how this series continues from here, and I hope each of the girls continue to get their moments.

This has officially become one of, if not my favorite series in the genre. I've had this on my to read list for a while and put it off until there was more than 2 or 3 books, because I just knew I was going to be hooked and want the next one... so here I am, at the end of book 4 contemplating on making a deal with Baba Yaga for the rest of the series. I dont think I have enjoyed a cast of characters this much before. I can't wait for book 5.
