I am writing this to save other historical romance reader's time and money. I will need to mention spoilers to explain my review.

If you have already read The Fugitive Who Became Her Groom by Eliza Cartwright (published May 26, 2026) do not buy or download this book.

Her Mail-Order Groom's Secret (published August 7, 2026) contains the exact same plot and characters. Names are changed and the wording is a bit different, but it's the same story and plot. It feels as though a single manuscript was just given a different title and a new pen name. I enjoy the trope, but listening to the same book twice under two different names is highly frustrating. Admittedly, I was in chapter 10 when I realized I'd heard this story and I compared the two stories before quitting this book.

When her sister dies, the MFC has to give up her life of living in town and being a seamstress when she inherits a ranch/farm, along with her young niece and nephew. When she gets overwhelmed, she puts out an ad for a mail-order groom to help around the ranch. She has a man in town who wants to marry her, but she wants nothing to do with him.

The MMC is from a rich family back east. When his mother dies, his stepfather tries to take the family company and his inheritance from him. When he discovers a plot to kill him, he flees west to hide, while his best friend (A sheriff's deputy in both books) stays back to find evidence of the stepfather's evil plans. He comes across the ad that MFC put in the paper, and decides to take her up on it as a way to hide. The MMC knows very little about how farming works, since he's rich and wasn't working in the fields, but he does try to learn after a few blunders.

The books are so similar that every character in one is in the other with the same personalities and different names. The scenes are almost the same, even if the wording is a little different. The MMC's deputy sheriff buddy shows up in town to help him and hits it off with the MFC's bestie. There's sabotage on the ranch to make the MMC look useless. A big party in town toward the middle-end of the book has the man from town who wanted to marry the MFC hooking up with the men who work for the stepfather and want to capture the MMC. The truth about him comes out and causes problems between the MFC and MMC and he leaves the farm, wanting to keep her and the kids safe.

The kids are not safe though and the two main characters go off to save the day. The MMC gets hurt and the MFC sits by his bedside as he gets better. All leading to an epilogue in both books with a wedding that again, is almost exactly the same.

Be sure to check your Kindle library or purchased books before purchasing so you don't accidentally buy a duplicate copy of a story you have already read.

P.S. The Audiobook is virtual voice, which usually is not great, but you get what you pay for when the book doesn't cost a credit, so I won't complain too much about that part.

This is a sweet story set in the West when it was still wild. There is a mystery on why things are happening at Annie’s ranch that have no time or reason. She sends an ad for a ranch hand and possible marriage. Silas arrives but he is not all he seems. Could this arrangement work? This is a quick read which can be enjoyed in one sitting.

Her Mail-Order Groom’s Secret

Julian came to Annie with a lie to work for her. He didn’t know a lot about working a ranch but because of him danger came. As he loved Annie and her family he toke care of business. I always heard of a Mail-Order Bride but never of a Mail-Order Groom. GOOD BOOK

Lovely Story

However, there were many spelling errors; poor sentence structures and grammatical errors. There were a few places that I had to reread several times to get the context of the sentence. I loved the story overall even with the errors.

disappointing

Just okay. A number of typos as if written in a rush. Not realistic. What 4 year old, after one piano lesson, can play a wedding march unless he’s Mozart? Violence in the last half of the novel went on too long.

A Novel Story

This story was had a little twist since it was a mail order groom and not a bride. It was somewhat of a typical story though with the groom running from something. The story was well written enough that it kept my interest.

Good Book

It was an excellent story. It's amazing how children can bring out the best in an adult. It always makes me wonder why bad people think they will win.

An ok story

I had a hard time getting into this
book. The first two thirds of this book was very boring. The author seemed to repeat the same thing over and over again.
