I am an absolute sucker for a cosy fantasy romance, so I was really excited to pick up The Spellbound Cottage.
Newly heartbroken Beatrix Bilberry moves to a tumbledown cottage in the magical village of Little Sparrow, only to find herself with unexpected company: gnomes, pixies, a melodramatic ghost, and Barnaby, an adorable sleepy hearth dragon. Beatrix is faced with a renovation project wildly beyond her skillset. With winter fast approaching and her tall, tattooed and charming neighbour Angus becoming impossible to avoid, Spellbound Cottage seems determined to push her toward more than just fixing up a home, it’s nudging her toward opening her heart to love again.
This was the definition of a warm and cosy hug!!! What a delightful read. I really enjoyed my time in Little Sparrow. The characters captured my heart and I could so vividly picture The Spellbound Cottage and all of its magical quirks.
Beatrix was a brilliant FMC. She had such relentless resilience when it came to the renovation - no matter what she was going to get the job done. She attracted good, kind hearted people to help her out and that says a lot about her character.
Angus! We love him. What an angel. I loved his openness and his desire to help Beatrix at every opportunity (even if he did spend a lot of time following her around like a lost puppy initially!!)
I loved that Beatrix discovered such a wonderful found family, all of the side characters were so lovely, but my favourites were definitely Atticus and Theodore from the magical wallpaper shop!
I have a soft spot in my heart for Barnaby and his love for apples. Where can I find myself a pet hearth dragon to curl up on my bed in an evening?? 🥺
I was obsessed with how much cake they ate, I appreciate the renovation was hard work, but no wonder Bea was running down her bank account 😂
I was surprised by and enjoyed the little mystery side quest. Without wanting to spoil anything, there’s a part towards the end that I didn’t see coming that had me absolutely devastated for Beatrix! But I loved how everything resolved.
The inclusion of the extracts from books, letters, Bea’s to do lists were such a clever addition - I really enjoyed reading them and it made the story even more fun!
I would absolutely love to live in the village! I’m really looking forward to reading more from Genevieve and making a return to Little Sparrow.

After graduating from art school, Beatrix returns to her childhood hometown of LIttle Sparrow to purchase a rundown cottage that’s in dire need of some TLC. She immediately dives into her expanding laundry list of renovations, which made me feel like a layabout for outsourcing 80% of my own home maintenance. The cottage’s prior owner disappeared into thin air, leaving behind a curious mystery and, more importantly, a plump hearth dragon who wants nothing more than love, apples, and naps. The village is full of delightful characters and Bea forms new connections with the local smithy, some fabulous queer warlocks, and a hot farrier whose natural charm she finds equal parts irksome and beguiling. I learned that having a hearth dragon is akin to having a cat, in that one is never enough, and I really need to get my hands on a bottle of apricot wine. Will Barnaby find his flame? Can Bea find her way back to art? And is it normal to cry over the curmudgeonly neighbor whose love language is pretending he doesn’t care while secretly caring a lot? All questions that need answering, which you should look into while I go buy a horse so I can lure an emotionally-available, tattooed farrier to shoe my steed and covet my cakes.

I went into this one hoping for comfort cozy fantasy, and in a lot of ways, that's exactly what I got. Beatrix Bilberry is moving into a tumbledown cottage in the magical village of Little Sparrow, and between gnome and pixies infestations, a melodramatic ghost, and an adorably sleepy hearth dragon named Barnaby, there's no shortage of whimsy and chaos waiting for her.
One of my favorite things about this book was the illustrations and little pieces of paper and documents scattered throughout, they gave a much better look into the lore and the world and story, and I always love reading through those kinds of details. It really added to the immersive feel of Little Sparrow.
I also loved the community and found family here! The small town feel paired with the whimsical, gentle magic of it all was exactly the kind of cozy I was craving, and Beatrix's first interactions with Angus felt genuinely right, a bit awkward instead of overly smooth, which honestly feels like how I'd handle conversations with a ridiculously handsome man too.
That said, this didn't fully click for me. A lot of the chapters felt unnecessary, with several just following Beatrix doing chores back and forth, running errands, getting books, this and that, when it easily could have been condensed into a few paragraphs instead of full chapters. It made things feel a bit tedious and honestly cut back on the whimsy the book was otherwise working to build. On top of that, almost nothing really happens throughout the entire book. There were maybe two or three moments with real potential for higher stakes, but they got resolved just as quickly, in the same chapter or the next, and I found myself wishing for more tension and follow through. At times it felt like I was just reading about Beatrix going from shop to shop picking up cottage supplies.
If you're looking for a low stakes, gentle cozy fantasy with charming small-town vibes and don't mind a slower, quieter pace, The Spellbound Cottage might still be a nice, easy read for you. But if you need more forward momentum or higher stakes to stay engaged, this one might feel a little flat. Not the most memorable read for me, but there were pieces of it I genuinely enjoyed!

Our story follows Beatrix as she struggles to find her purpose after graduating college and the death of her grandmother. She feels called to repair a cottage in Little Sparrow, making friends along the way. There’s a hearth dragon named Bilbury, a handsome helper named Angus, baked goods and fresh vegetables from the garden, and a number of troublesome pests, including pixies, gnomes and a ghost.
This book was very cute. There was a heavy emphasis on cozy elements, from the flavor of baked goods to the process of gardening. There’s an engaging found family, a fun romance, and a number of quirky side characters. The dragons were particularly delightful, functioning as excellent pets in the context of the story.
The romance started strangely; namely, Angus was doing some mild flirting and Beatrix always felt annoyed at him for no clear reason. She seems to see him as some kind of nemesis from their first interaction, I think so that the characters can have an enemies-to-lovers arc that felt unnecessary. Beatrix is not seen as negative towards most people, so her distain for Angus feels out of place.
The story lacked what felt like a proper climax. The stakes in a cozy fantasy should never rival an epic war, but these stakes felt too small and were resolved too quickly. There was no tension, no push and pull, no real belief that things wouldn’t work out. The climax of the story is not something that we have been working towards, but a random event that derails our character’s work. It makes the book feel poorly plotted, as the climax isn’t something that we can anticipate and appreciate.
This story was cute, and fun, and sweet. But the comparisons made by the publisher to The Ex Hex and The Spellshop feel unfair to this book. This book does not have their stakes, nor their romantic tension. This book feels like a fantasy equivalent of The Pumpkin Spice Cafe, a cozy, low-stakes slice of life fantasy novel about a home renovation.

Did I just discover a new favourite sub-sub-genre? ✨️Magical cottage renovation✨️ Mhm. Yes. I approve. Maybe it's because I'm perpetually in the middle of some home improvement project myself, but apparently I now enjoy reading about other people suffering through theirs too.
This book really surprised me. The further you get, the more magical it becomes. The cottage feels like a proper little fairytale world of its own - overgrown gardens, peculiar magical creatures that keep popping up, cosy nooks, and all those slightly odd, charming details that make you want to move in and never leave. Everything has that wonderfully lived-in cottagecore quality, but with a distinctly magical twist. I LOVED this.
I also really enjoyed the main and supporting characters, and it feels like a great setup for the rest of the series - which I will definitely be continuing. I only wish we'd gotten a little more from the love interest. He's the perfect competent, smirking MMC for this setting, but a bit more personality would've made their slow-burn courtship more interesting. I did like that the romance wasn't rushed or the main focus, though. Instead, we explore the fear of failure and starting over, recovering from betrayal and trying to trust again - felt surprisingly relatable. Plus, a little mystery on the side!
And I have to talk about the cover. I didn't love it initially, but having now read the book, I don't think it does the cottage's particular brand of magic justice. Something more sketchy, detailed, slightly weathered, and overflowing with little magical details would've captured the atmosphere so much better (and matched the interior art beautifully). So if you're a fellow cover judger, don't let this one fool you.

Magical cozy romances are becoming a new obsession of mine, and this one delivered such a fun story. The small-town setting and cozy vibes created the perfect atmosphere for me. I really liked the characters, especially Beatrix and Angus. I loved that they didn't fall for each other instantly, but instead slowly grew closer throughout the story.
The magical creatures were so much fun, and the found family trope is one of my favorites, so I really enjoyed that aspect of the story too. The story has a slow build-up, both in the plot and the romance, with much of it focusing on Beatrix rebuilding the cottage and taking care of her everyday chores. I think this will especially appeal to readers who enjoy a slower, cozy pace.
I listened to the audiobook version, and the narrator made the story even more enjoyable, especially with her accent. I also liked how she changed her voice for the different characters without it ever feeling awkward or overdone.
If you enjoy cozy fantasy, magical creatures, small towns, cottage renovations, found family, and a slow-burn romance, this might be a book for you! 🏡✨

This is a slow paced slice of life type story with no real stakes. It follows Beatrice as she restores a run down cottage and settles into small town life. The majority of the story follows Beatrice reading about and performing her daily tasks and restoring the cottage. I do enjoy these sorts of stories but I prefer to have some stakes or overarching plot in a cosy fantasy.
I also struggled to connect with the romance. I felt like Beatrice was unnecessarily grumpy with Angus in the beginning. It felt misplaced because she didn’t have that temperament with any other character and there didn’t seem to be a reason for it. I also felt like it could have used some build up or tension - it just sort of happened.
I did love all of the magical creatures, especially the hearth dragons. I do wish they were utilized more to make the story feel more magical and whimsical, as the main characters themselves did not have magic of their own.

🍁Cozy Perfection 🍁
I LOVE this book!
The cozy elements are kicked up a a notch and they absolutely ooze off the pages!
I love the magical elements and how sweet and comforting it is. The romance is a slow burn, clean storyline. Possibly a tad controversial, but I actually very much enjoyed the low stakes elements of our story!
It felt like I was living in the cottage, in a cozy village, surrounded by magic and magical creatures, with a buddy romance, cuddled up on the couch with some hot chocolate! I just lost myself in the atmosphere and vibe of the entire book!
I alternated between the audio and the kindle version of the book. I enjoyed both, and especially felt immersed during the audio because the narrators accent is perfection! Audio is single narration, and still filled with emotion and depth.
I see that this is the first in a series and I’m already excited to read book 2!!!
I can’t wait to read more and to reread this when the leaves start changing!
I LOVE this book!
The cozy elements are kicked up a a notch and they absolutely ooze off the pages!
I love the magical elements and how sweet and comforting it is. The romance is a slow burn, clean storyline. Possibly a tad controversial, but I actually very much enjoyed the low stakes elements of our story!
It felt like I was living in the cottage, in a cozy village, surrounded by magic and magical creatures, with a buddy romance, cuddled up on the couch with some hot chocolate! I just lost myself in the atmosphere and vibe of the entire book!
I alternated between the audio and the kindle version of the book. I enjoyed both, and especially felt immersed during the audio because the narrators accent is perfection! Audio is single narration, and still filled with emotion and depth.
I see that this is the first in a series and I’m already excited to read book 2!!!
I can’t wait to read more and to reread this when the leaves start changing!

Fun, cozy and sweet!
The perfect read when you need something cozy. I enjoyed Beatrix's story of finding herself, home and community. The Little Sparrow Village, full of dragons and other creatures, was a delightful read with its strange villagers and all the lovely pastries, what would a cozy book be without them.
I recommend adding the book to your fall reading list!

The spellbound cottage is an adorable cozy fantasy ideal for those of us who’ve like to watch people renovate in new countries/towns to them on youtube.
Roisin Rankin’s audio takes this a step further into cozy and adds soothing. They are a new to me narrator, but one I will be keeping a watch for now.

A lovely story of finding yourself and your people. A village full of small magic and love, Bea is a great character and the villagers, including Wren, Angus, Henry and the hearth dragons make for a sweet and lively story. Really enjoyable.
