Hockey Heats #1

Omega Offside

Rate this book
Cody Wallace is pretty used to the pain of his heats. He doesn’t have the option to not work or play through them and his inhibitors keep him from losing his mind, so he grits his teeth and bears it until his heat has run its course. Besides, the press—and many hockey fans—don’t care for an omega in the NHL. So Cody has to be the bigger person. Always.

At least the guys on Cody’s team, the Detroit Cougars, have never treated him any differently for being an omega. Even when Cody was a rookie, the Cougars had been welcoming. Especially Leo Blanter, the captain of the Cougars. Leo has such a calming presence and is so free with his praise and he’s always looking out for Cody. Cody counts himself lucky that they’re such good friends.

When Cody’s heat comes early during an away game, he takes his inhibitors and plays the game like normal. But the heat pain following the game is unlike anything he’s ever experienced before.

And a terrified Cody doesn't know if he can weather this heat on his own.

The Hockey Heats series are omegaverse books that do not contain mpreg.

story-wise it reminded me a lot of the Alpha Omega Hockey series by Marina Vivancos. that isn’t necessarily a bad thing but i didn’t find anything distinctive or unique in this book. and that i found unfortunate.

i will probably still take a look into the sequel when it gets released.

note: extra points for this 2026 debut author giving us all the credits on the copyright page as well as a big F*U to AI. very much appreciated

This delivers exactly what the blurb says it will - and I ate it up! 😁
I love a well done alpha/omega story (sue me 🤭) add in some hockey team dynamics and its pretty much a perfect read for me!
Also really loved that this wasn't just spice - there were some cute tender moments
My only complaint is that I wish this had been longer 🥲

MM romance | Omegaverse | Hockey Sports | Teammates to Lovers | Friends to Lovers | Hurt x Comfort | Caretaking | Heat | Nesting | Knotting | First times | Virgin MC | Rimming | Blow jobs

〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️

I kept seeing this novella all over Instagram and decided to see what all the hype was about, and I have to say I really loved what I found!

This is definitely a story that could’ve easily been a full-length novel. Cody and Leo were so adorable together, I loved them every step of the way! Leo provided all the love and patience Cody desperately needed, and Cody was just a total sweetheart who just needed a huge hug 😭💖.

The pacing is a bit fast, but being a novella, it totally makes sense. I enjoyed it so much, and I definitely need to read Sergei’s story next 👀👀!

This book was not really what I thought it was, but maybe that's on me. The time frame is really short and basically just revolves around a single event. Oh, and (maybe spoiler?) This feels much less like a romance and much more like a cautionary tale and a pitch for equity. The messaging wasn't bad or anything, and both of the MCs were fairly likeable, it just... didn't feel super romantic.

I would still try another by the author, if only because they included such a good fucking nesting scene and I'm a total whore for those.

Pet name: sweetheart, baby

Most of the time when Cody’s name came up in a positive light, it was still always attached to a but. He’s an omega, but he’s fucking fast. He’s an omega, but his instincts are good. He’s an omega, but he knows how to score. Leo though…Leo always took that but and turned it into an and. Yeah, he’s an omega—and we’re fucking lucky to have him.

“Cody,” Leo said softly, “there’s nothing you could ask me for that I don’t already want to give you.”

“I’m not mindless. I can control myself. I will not do anything you don’t want. But if you trust me enough to try to help you stop hurting, then I will do my goddamn best to be an alpha worthy of you, and I will fucking thank you for the privilege.”

“Show me?” Cody whispered. “Take care of me and show me how good it can be?” Ruin me for anyone else.

“You don’t have to beg, sweetheart,” Leo said, moving down Cody’s body until he was hovering between Cody’s spread legs. “I’ll give you what you need.”

Safety (may contain spoilers)

SA/rape: A hotel employee tries to assault Cody - traps him against a wall, holds him by the wrists, bites his neck, but it is interrupted.

Other person drama: None. Cody's past was honestly unclear to me in terms of if he'd ever had partners at all before, and there wasn't any info on Leo's.

OMFG THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD. Omega Offside by @grey_crowe had EVERYTHING I wanted - it’s hockey teammates to lovers omegaverse, novella length, the perfect amount of angst and spice. AND it’s TOP TIER omegaverse, with TONS of caretaking (think hand feeding, “he made his favorite food”, “he washes his hair”, etc), nesting, posessive/protective alpha (honestly, the entire team becomes protective in the sweetest way), omega rights discussion, heats, knotting, IT HAS IT ALL.

The premise is that Cody is an omega playing on an NHL team, trying to hide his heats because he doesn’t want to be looked down upon because of his designation. When he has an unexpected heat, he intends to just play through the pain, but when his alpha captain Leo realizes what’s going on, he immediately tries to help him (and confesses his long time crush too). It’s sweet and well-written (like, how is this a debut?!) and I DEVOURED it so freaking fast. My omegaverse-loving friends, PICK THIS UP and you’d better believe I’ll be here for book 2 because THE WAY I NEED a Sergei book 👀.

3.5⭐️ Was in the mood for a short novella and this one delivered exactly what it says on the tin (aka in the blurb): a sweet & spicy omegaverse novella about an omega who has been overusing suppressants and the hockey team captain alpha that’s been in love with them for years.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.75 stars

Omega Offside is a short and sweet novella set in the omegaverse. Occasionally, the sweetness bordered on saccharine and I would have preferred if the romance between Cody and Leo had a bit more time to evolve, but overall, this was a fun little read.

It was easy to care about Cody, as he’s placed his professional life above his personal health and his suffering is now palpable. As an omega in an alpha’s world, he has very little control over his medical decisions or certain aspects of his life. So his desperate dedication to hockey is understandable — it’s one of the few things he can control and a goal he’s devoted his entire adult life to achieving.

Omega Offside was a charming, if somewhat simplistic novella that was good, but could have been better. Leo and Cody are easy to sympathize with and I appreciated their connection as a couple. But Leo needed more depth as a character and their romance read as a bit too thrown together. On the whole, I enjoyed this one and I think most fans of omegaverse books will as well.

I'm actually physically incapable of NOT liking gay omegaverse hockey books so...

The answer to the Marina Vivancos shaped hole in my heart (I've finished all of those Omegaverse hockey books already 💔). This is a great beginning to a new series!

Hurt/Comfort
Friends (Teammates) to Lovers
Caretaking
Nesting
A whole hockey team willing to go to war for their teammate

Delightful!

Can't wait for Sergei's book.🌝🌝🌝

I think @julietfoxreads got us all with this book rec! Completely blown away that thjs was a debut because I need MORE 🙌🏻🙌🏻 @grey_crowe your writing was so good! The caretaking was top tier, the love was felt through the screen & these two were 1000% meant for each other! There was a quiet gentleness that I really enjoyed, even though Cody's heats were so intense. And Leo 🫠 we all need a Leo. He was just so perfect. You can count on me to now be stalking your page for book two because I am so excited to see more of Sergi 👀

Omega hockey player abuses suppressants to play professionally. Oops sudden heat and the only one who can help is the hunky Alpha captain he’s been secretly crushing on. 😏😍

Cute premise, likeable characters, fun little read BUT there’s a lot of telling rather than showing and it very much reads like a debut.

Props to the author for getting their first book out - there’s a lot of potential here and I’m absolutely here for some of the side characters. I will never not be 100% sat for a big Russian hockey player that struggles with English and similarly I would do anything for a psycho goalie. Give me all their books.

‼️SPOILERS‼️

The fact that this is this author’s debut shocks the heck out of me because it sucked me in from the moment I read the blurb. If you don’t know it but if you mix omegaverse with MM, I am so in.

Cody. I loved him so much. The fact that he has suffered his heat alone broke my heart. He just wanted to be loved. When a situation happens where he is almost assaulted, things between Cody and Leo change and only for the better.

I just love how they both have had a crush on one another and it’s just all the cute vibes for me.

And this found family is so perfect. From the way that the team backs up Cody and Hen - oh, I love her so much!

I have to say that the nesting chapter was my perfect. And when he grabs his hoodie because something is missing had me in my feels. I’m such a sucker for the cute scenes they will steal my heart away.

This book was so sweet and just had me in my feelings. Sure, there is a little bit of drama but I was here for it. I cannot wait for Sergei’s story because the way he was with Cody in the book means he is going to protect his mate when he finds his special someone.

If you are looking for omegaverse, MM, the perfect found family, a protective alpha, and just the sweetest moments, this book is for you.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.

Marina Vivancos recommended this so ofc I had to read it! And this author has the potential to be a new fav! I think I couldn't get as deep into the story as I wanted to but the usage of omegaverse to talk about biffer issues. I am DYING to read Sergei's book!!!

A fun and enjoyable debut!
The writing style flows nice and the characters hold your interest.

It feels a bit underdeveloped, though. Like we’re missing the other half. And there was a lot of setup for things that just never ended up coming to pass. Namely, the drama with Cody’s family. Like it’s hinted at that there was some bad stuff that happened in his childhood that ultimately led them to abusing inhibitors, but nope, never find out. We don’t even really see Cody interact or talk to his dad at all, even though it seems to be a point of anxiety for him.

Also thought for sure the book would at least touch on the controversy that probably would’ve came out of of Leo and Cody dating. But nope, that’s never explored either. We don’t even really good to see them come out to their team which is kind of a bummer because it didn’t even need to be drama filled just like a “hey this is my omega,” would’ve sufficed.

Still enjoyed it though don’t get me wrong and I would recommend checking it out. I’ll be looking forward to this author’s future releases.

Omega Offside by Grey Crowe is book 1 in the Hockey Heats series. This is a new author for me. I actually really enjoyed the story between Cody and Leo. It was very interesting to me how Leo knew so much more about omegas than Cody did (due to his upbringing). I love how he was walking Cody through everything and explaining why he was doing something. These two fit together sooo well. I loved all the side characters too and look forward to more stories from this universe. I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys omegaverse.

I received an ARC from the author and GRR for my honest review.

This would have been four stars if the book was a bit more developed and the ending wasn’t so abrupt. A few plot points were never followed through on like his medical and father issues. Look forward to more from this author though!

3.5 stars. Liked this a lot, but it was quite similar to Broken ice by Marina Vivancos (which is a bit ironic, since I came across this novella through Vivancos's newsletter). One guy has a heat problem, captain has to help him through it and has secretly been in love with the guy for a long time. Even the ending was a bit abrupt, which is a problem I have with a lot of Vivancos's books. In this case I really wanted to know more about what the doctors were going to do about Cody's heats, how Cody and Leo were going to keep things a secret outside of the team (or were they going to tell everyone), etc. I also would have loved a scene where Leo would have gone off on Cody's father, because what a douche.

But if you want something short and very sweet, this could fit the bill. It's a lot of caretaking and hurt/comfort.

First off, congratulations to Grey for their book debut! I’m so happy they decided to start their writing career by writing an omegaverse because it’s my weakness.

That said, I absolutely loved Leo and Cody. Leo was such a beautiful green-flag alpha. The way he always protected Cody from everyone who had something negative to say about him not belonging in the league for being an omega was so beautiful. He wouldn’t allow anyone to slander Cody because he knew how hard Cody had worked to be where he was.

And he did that without even knowing the full extent of how much Cody had gone through in order to play. Cody was his everything even if he kept his feelings for him hidden. He would burn down the world for Cody in order to keep him safe.

I know omegaverses are hard to read because the amount of hurt and suffering the omegas go through is just so unfair, but this one was another level of unfairness. The lengths Cody went through in order to be taken seriously was truly devastating. The stress he put on his body and mental health was so heartbreaking.

He did everything right, sometimes even better than the alphas, yet he was always belittled and undermined. Being blamed for being an omega like it was a crime made me livid.

What happened to him after the game made me sick to my stomach. I was just glad that Leo and Sergei were there to help him. Things could have gone really wrong for Cody.

As scary as it was for Cody, I’m glad that incident happened because it allowed him to know how Leo truly felt about him. That he would always protect him with his life if need be because he loved him.

At first, Cody couldn’t believe that Leo loved him because he had always had feelings for Leo too, but never thought it could happen. He didn’t feel worthy of someone like Leo because he thought so little of himself. I hated his father for putting all that garbage in his head 🤬

Loved that Leo wouldn’t allow him to talk negatively about himself. He vowed to show him just how amazing Cody was even if it took a lifetime. Building Cody’s confidence was high in Leo’s list of priorities.

My favorite part of this story was Cody finally standing up for himself. Telling some hard truths that needed to be said so people could finally understand how hard it was for omegas to try to make something of themselves. I only wish we could have read about what happened after that.

Cory deserved someone who loved him for the amazing omega that he was and Leo was ready to show him. Being Cody’s alpha was everything Leo ever wanted and it finally happened 🥺

“𝑰𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒎𝒆 𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒓𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒑 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒑 𝒉𝒖𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝑰 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒅𝒐 𝒎𝒚 𝒈𝒐𝒅𝒅𝒂𝒎𝒏 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒂𝒏 𝒂𝒍𝒑𝒉𝒂 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒉𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒌 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒆.”

Awesome story! Can’t wait for Sergei’s book😁

I've read a few omegaverse hurt/comfort heat help books in my day. (By "a few" I mean "a lot," and by "in my day" I mean "in the past two months since I started reading omegaverse stuff.") This one is my favorite. It's short enough that it doesn't overstay its welcome, long enough to completely cover the character's arc without adding in a bunch of other stuff. It has social themes about the treatment of omegas, but they make sense in context and don't read like "baby's first guide to feminism/queer rights." The hockey stuff is important to the characters, but not so much sports stuff that I start skimming. It does "protective alpha" in the most swooningly romantic way rather than a problematic one. The hurt/comfort is very much on the fluffier side, nothing traumatic on-page (there's a brief attempted SA and the rest is toxic masculinity from the MC's upbringing).

Speaking as a queer adult who was homeschooled by conservatives, I found Cody's whole situation to be very believable. I feel like people on the outside really don't understand how little someone like me might know when they first flee the nest, the weird gaps in knowledge or not quite fully understanding something even if you've been told, and Cody went from that situation straight into professional sports where the culture is still very toxic, so he just doesn't know a lot of stuff. I worry that people who haven't been through that experience may think it's silly that he wouldn't know important medical information about himself, but it's genuinely the case, this happens to people all the time. So I loved that, and it also works well for the book's setup, because it means Cody can go through this personal arc and need the comfort for this hurt, but we don't have to read a whole dystopian nightmare of an omegaverse setting. (I am so sick of omegaverse books that start as romances and then plunge off into some kind of weird legal drama about omega rights advocacy because the author feels bad for having set the world up unfairly for them. Happens more often than you'd think.)

Can't wait for the next one, Sergei is my precious cinnamon roll of a giant Russian hockey player and I wanna see him in love. 😠

Firstly, let me say I got this book from gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review
Now this is Grey Crowes first Book and I took a chance on it because I like the blurb. It wasn’t an overly long book and it had the omega alpha storyline and hockey. I’ve never watched a hockey game in my life but for some reason I enjoy reading about it and for me this Book is a 4.5 stars.

Cody is an Omega and he was the first Omega to play in the NFL. The team had his backing because he was there through hard work he is the fastest player of the team and an asset but Cody had lied saying that he was taking inhibitors and he hadn’t had a heat. But in reality he was taking a daily drug and stabilises and scent blockers because hockey was his love but when he was away playing a game, his heat had come three weeks early he didn’t have all the drugs he needed to help but he managed to get through the game. But then something happens that changed everything.

Leo is the captain and he had hidden his feelings for Cody for years, but what he witnessed changed everything and he could no longer hide those feelings. Would Cody let Leo Help?? how would the Team take the news? Would he have the backing of the owners?? So many questions and answering all these whilst going through a heat seems impossible?
The chemistry between Leo and Cody is so loving so understanding it was everything that Cody believed he didn’t deserve. Their story is beautiful if you said that side the heat of them coming together of the understanding it’s just beautiful.
I am also very glad that I have found this author on their first book because I am really looking forward to Sergey’s Book next. Overall a brilliant read I will admit I wanted the answer to the question that Cody thought was too early to ask, but I’m sure we’ll find out as the series progresses.

I received an arc of this from grr!

Wow this so good. I haven’t signed up for any arcs in a long time because I am just do not have the motivation to read within a certain amount of time and write a review after, but the summary for this caught my eye and it totally lived up to my expectations. I would’ve read it all in one sitting in my eyes weren’t hurting me so much 😅

Cody is a hockey player, the only omega on the team, and he’s very self conscious about it. We get told his dad was not exactly very encouraging when it came to living him life as an omega, and definitely wasn’t supportive or helped him out in anyway. This leads Cody to being a bit ignorant when it comes to some things, like how to live comfortably as an omega and the benefits an alpha (even platonically) can provide.

Cody has been living with painful hears for a long time, and even forces himself through games with them. He hadn’t told any of his teammates, even his close (and hot) friend Leo. Certain things happen and suddenly Cody is faced with the dilemma of being away from home, no inhibitors, and a wonderful Leo offering his help.

I really enjoyed the relationship progress in this. There was no silly miscommunication and Leo was such a gem trying to reassure Cody that all the things he needed to do to help himself were not wrong. I honestly wish this book was longer cause I enjoyed reading about them so much. I’m a big fan of self conscious x reassuring couples.

Cody’s team also is amazing, they’re so supportive. I absolutely loved Sergei and I was delighted to see his book is next 🥰I cannot wait!

I do wish there was a bit more backstory, and more conclusion. I feel like we should’ve gotten more info on the fallout of certain things that happened, and also I’d love to have know how Cody’s relationship with his father would change. I really hope they get a sequel story at some stage.

OMEGA OFFSIDE is the first novella in the Hockey Heats series, set in a contemporary Omegaverse, where omegas are still being told they are incapable of doing certain things. Like playing hockey, for example.

Cody has spent every moment of his time playing professional hockey being told by others that he is not good enough, as he's only an omega. Luckily for him, his teammates and the club in general all have his back. That's a good thing because his heat arrives three weeks early and with more pain than he has ever experienced before. Also, luckily for him, his captain, Leo, is more than happy to lend a helping hand, as well as other body parts!

This is a novella, so expect a fast-paced story. It's also slightly different in that we get little to no buildup of the relationship between Leo and Cody before the heat kicks in. It turns out, Leo has been in love with Cody for years, but was afraid to ruin their working relationship by saying so. I loved seeing Leo's horror when he learnt about how Cody had been dealing with his heats.

A quick, hot read that dips your toe into this world. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and can't wait to continue with this series, especially with Sergei!

I love Cody and Leo. Leo is super supportive of Cody and I love it.
Cody goes into surprise heat and almost gets assaulted, but luckily Leo walks by and saves the day. Oh and Leo didn't know Cody was an omega before that happened. Cody's whole team doesn't know he is an omega.

But I do have a note:
Because where is the rest of the story? First of, this story was already really fast paced and could have easily be more detailed. A lot of information was rushed through or not even properly mentioned. For example, Cody's father/childhood/upbringing or how Cody and Leo's friendship developed. They were already in love by the time the book started.
Second of all, where is the ending? Yes, Cody and Leo kinda get their happy ending, but I don't know if I would call it HEA, becausd the book contains only like a week of their lives. Then the rest of the ending is just not there. Cody is taken apart by the press and he finally stands up for himself, but that's the last we see of it. No reaction from the press or the GM or PR or the tran or even Leo. WTF.
Also Cody was gonna see a doctor about his heat. It is set in motion with Hen (the GM), but that's the last time it's mentioned. Also in the same conversation Cody was gonna think about coming clean to the press about his struggles as an omega in het NHL. But I think you can already guess that this also wasn't a part of the story. It was never mentioned after that one scene.
I feel like I miss at least half of the book. WTF.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Omega Offside is an amuse-bouche, a tasty little morsel about a tasty little omega who knows nothing about his heats and needs.

The story is short, sweet, and just right. It takes place over about a week, and we're dropped into the middle of a world and a story without the need for much backstory or exposition.

Cody is the only omega in the NHL, and for six years he has been hiding his heats via torturous and agonizing means. Though he can usually mask his heats with scent-covering soap, prescription medicine, and determination, when his heat hits a few weeks early, everything he's fought for threatens to come unraveled.

Following a violent attack, Cody has to trust his best friend, team captain, and alpha, Leo Blanter, with his closely guarded secret.

Mirroring the realities of homo & transphobia in pro sports, Cody has to navigate unfair, invasive, and cruel questions from the press and bigoted targeting by league players.

But when he's most in need, his Cougar teammates (Sergei, be my alpha please) and most of all, Leo, are there to ensure their little omega is safe.

Fun, fast, very sexy and knotty, if you enjoy A/B/O - omegaverse hotness, you will love Omega Offside.

My only complaint is I wanted so much more.

(Also, Leo teaching Cody all the things was just the best.)

What an absolutely fantastic debut novel by this author! I loved every second of this book; it was well-written, well-paced and kept me hooked from start to finish so I had to stay up late and read it in one go. Cody was fiercely independent and determined and I loved how Leo was his perfect match, supporting him but also being so protective and loving. Their relationship was great, their chemistry was smoking hot and the ending is definitely a happy one (I'd call it a HFN but I get the sense that it's just a less specific version of a HEA). Character development was good throughout the book; I enjoyed the description of the team and its different members. Sergei in particular has stolen my heart! He made me laugh and I think that everyone should have a loyal friend like him! I really really hope that there isn't too long to wait until his story - there's no doubt that I need book 2 and I'm sure I'll devour it just as quickly.

Overall, this is a brilliant story with characters I cared about and so much to look forward to next in the series. I'm excited for more and I'd definitely recommend this book if you like alpha/omega dynamics in mm romance.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.
