Thorag de Germaan
Thorag en Arminius, zoon van een Cheruskische leider, hebben in het Oosten gevochten tegen de Romeinen, waarna ze zich op weg naar huis begeven. Het land dat de Romeinen Germania noemen. Buitensporig hoge belastingen hebben vele stammen, waaronder de Cherusken, tegen de Romeinen opgezet en Thorag voelt, hoewel hij zelf Cherusk is, veel wantrouwen omdat hij zelf ooit onder Augustus heeft gevochten.
Hij ziet zich gedwongen om naar een Romeinse nederzetting aan de oevers van de Rijn te vluchten, maar ook daar wordt hij weggekeken door de wantrouwende Romeinen. Hij besluit zich daarom aan te sluiten bij een Cheruskische opstand die wordt geleid door Arminius, waarmee ze een Romeinse generaal en zijn drie legioenen in een val laten lopen. Deze gebeurtenis vormt de aftrap de avonturen in deze Germanen-saga. De Slag bij het Teutoburgerwoud duurt drie volle dagen, en na afloop is het conflict ook allerminst opgelost. Het decennium dat volgt staat in het teken van liefde en vriendschap, maar die worden echter vertroebeld door oorlog en dood door de strijd die Thorag en Arminius moeten leveren tegen de Romeinen dissidenten binnen hun eigen rangen.

Spannende Nacherzählung der Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald. Die Geschichte nimmt nach der Hälfte richtig Fahrt auf und die Spannung wird bis zum Ende gehalten. Die Charaktere sind sehr gut ausgearbeitet und ließen mich mitfiebern.

A very well written, entertaining and powerful piece of historical fiction based on historical events - a very long time ago. It's historical fiction that - for me - hits very close to home. As much as I love reading, say, medival stories set in other countries, this saga is special, because, in a way, it's my ancestors we're talking about here ;)
The time is the years and 8 and 9 CE, the place is Middle and Nothern Germany. Meet Thorag, proud Cherusci lord, and his friends, among them one Arminius, yes, that Arminius, and yes, we're headed towards the infamous Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (you know, Varus losing his legions and all). Before that, we learn that Thorag, Arminius and co. have lived with and learned from the Romans, but once they're back home, they're having trouble adapting - Thorag feels home neither here nor there, but finally finds his fate and destination.
This saga also offers a "nice" view into the daily life in these times - as much as possible, of course. And wow, times were tough. Violence was everywhere, shame wasn't apparently invented yet and as for Roman decadence... it's all there.

Kastner created a convincing historical setting, where an interesting story develops. Nothing to deep or special, but definately entertaining.
