This was absolutely one of those books where I kept thinking, there is no way this is going to work, and then somehow it completely won me over. The premise is wonderfully ridiculous in the best possible way, but underneath all the outrageous humour and wildly unexpected romance is a surprisingly sweet story about loneliness, companionship and discovering someone who makes an ordinary life feel completely different. Kathleen is such a fun heroine because she reacts to the sheer absurdity of her situation with exactly the kind of disbelief and humour that makes the whole experience so entertaining. Creel is impossible to forget. He may be an ancient fae trapped in an extremely unusual form, but his personality, confidence and surprisingly tender side make him far more than a joke. I especially loved the banter between them because it gives the story so much personality and keeps the outrageous premise feeling playful rather than forced. There is also something genuinely touching about Creels longing for connection after spending so long unable to communicate or experience the affection he desperately wants. Beneath all the comedy and spice, that emotional thread gives the romance an unexpected sweetness. This is unapologetically quirky, completely unconventional and clearly not trying to be anything other than the wonderfully strange adventure it is. I went into this expecting something absurd and came away appreciating how much personality and heart was hiding underneath all the madness. Skye MacKinnon certainly knows how to make a reader raise an eyebrow, laugh out loud and keep turning the pages.

Kathleen needs a break from her job as a schoolteacher. But will her Gran’s cottage with its old wicket basket provide her with more than the needed break? This one was a hoot - the banter between Kathleen and “Creel” was snappy, the “Scottish-mess” was a blast, and I liked the far element. A fun read.
