Requiem: A Novel of Belisarius

Rate this book
All things must come to an end.

Belisarius has spent a lifetime saving Rome from enemies beyond its borders. Now age has weakened his body, war has emptied the treasury, and the empire he restored is beginning to devour the men who kept it alive.

Beyond the frozen Danube, Attila’s heirs are gathering. At their head rides Zabergan, lord of the Huns, carrying the Sword of God and a hatred for Rome nursed since childhood. To the world, he is a conqueror. To Varus the Herulian, he is Samur, the lost brother stolen consumed by a thirst for vengeance.

When the Huns assault the Long Walls and pour across Thrace, Constantinople discovers how little stands between civilization and ruin. The imperial armies are scattered. The court is paralyzed. Justinian has one weapon the old general whose victories he has feared for thirty years.

Called from retirement, Belisarius must fashion an army from shopkeepers, farmers, palace guards, and a few battered veterans. At his side, Varus faces the choice that has haunted his entire life. He can save the empire that gave him purpose and consumed everyone he loved, or aid the brother who has come to burn it all to the ground.

The road to their final battle runs through a devastated Italy, a Frankish invasion, the deaths of old companions, and the reckoning of Attila’s bloodline. Survival offers no promise of justice. The palace keeps its own account, and victory may place Belisarius in greater danger than defeat.

In REQUIEM, William Havelock brings THE LAST OF THE ROMANS to its conclusion with Belisarius’s final command, Varus’s final oath, and the fate of an empire built by men it could never bring itself to trust.

The walls are failing. The old companions are dying. One battle remains.

Overall, I really enjoyed this conclusion to the series.

The Gothic War, both historically and in these novels, does seem to drag on. There are so many instances where the Romans are on the brink of disaster, only for reinforcements to arrive, albeit only after some side character is killed. I don't think it's unrealistic that so many of Varus's companions would be lost, only that the pattern becomes somewhat noticeable after 8 books.

Once the war is concluded, the plot does move toward a satisfying and believable conclusion. Zabergan's invasion presents a challenge unlike any that the Roman's have faced thus far, but the climax of this raid was definitely a highlight of the book for me. But the story doesn't end there - the characters do not, in fact, just live happily ever after. Instead, they must deal with the consequences of their actions, which reach beyond the battlefield. I like how bittersweetly the book ended and definitely recommend this series.

Excellent read

One of the best works , I've come across that, tells the tale of Constantinople . The book is full of rich detail, very well fleshed out characters and marvellous depictions of life as it was in those times . I'm now an avid reader of William Havelock
