Ugh - I got through the first volume of the trilogy, and ... well ... it's lacking.

The society is not particularly well-developed. Yes, the idea of a spacefaring Rome could be really neat ... but what we have here is a fairly typical space opera civilization with a smattering of references to places and characters prominent in ancient Roman history. There's no real exploration of how a sustained Rome would look after a few centuries in space. The Praetorian Guard seems to have become some kind of private police force for the nobility that we're supposed to fear.

But the "alien intelligence" ... ummm ... yeah. Not particularly believable, and in many ways reduces the ruling class to little more than zombies held captive.

There is so much that this book could be, and it falls short on almost all of them. I say this as a casual student of Roman history and a fan of space opera. So much potential, so many disappointments.

Codes Antonius

A very interesting series of book very similar to the old 80s tv series Whatif. Marc Anthony discovered an alien species in Egypt which gave him the knowledge and power of muskets against Octavian and thus the Antoine dynasty is founded and controls the Roman Republic on Earth and spreads out into space. A thousands years later a descendant is able to fight the virus and Circus grows as a twelve year old boy in consul of Rome and discovers the aliens are a malignant scourage which needs to be eliminated. A very good series
