A bully dinosaur pesters the weak, good and small dinosaur. One day, the good dinosaur thinks of teaching the bully a lesson. Will he succeed? Well, time to figure that out!
This is my very first read in Spanish, a children story about a good dinausor named Bonifacio who has always been bullied by another one named Tairon, this Tairon is larger in size and much stronger than Bonifacio, so in the story we see how this latter gets his revenge in a clever way. While reading I didn't get to understand all of the words, but thanks to the illustrations it got easier. And of course I was unable to write a review in Spanish, which I'd do once I get skilled to do that.
Tyrone the Horrible tells the story of a group of dinosaur children from long ago that face many problems similar to children today. The protagonist of the story, Boland, has many friends in his dinosaur community and enjoys playing with everyone except Tyrone the horrible. Tyrone relentlessly bullies Boland day and night making it hard for him to sleep. One day, Boland decides to take action to make the bullying stop. All of his friends give him varying advise from giving Tyrone a present, to ignoring him, and even fighting him, but nothing seems to work. Boland becomes discouraged and resigns that he will simply always have to deal with Terrible Tyrone. However, one night he comes up with a plan to rid himself of Tyrone for good. In the morning he wakes up and makes a sandwich filled with spicy hot peppers. When he walks outside, Tyrone steals the sandwich away like usual not expecting the fiery surprise. After this, he never bothers Boland again.
This book strongly depends on the pictures to add life and meaning to the story. The pictures from page to page vary in format greatly. Certain pages feature many illustrations in bubbled format to show the passage of several smaller scenes. Larges scenes are also depicted on other pages taking up all or half of the spread. The pictures also feature many details that offer the reader additional information that is not included in the text such as the moods and emotions of the characters. For example, on the page where Boland decides to fight Tyrone he is depicted walking towards him with his chest puffed up, letting the reader know that he is trying to appear tough.
This particular book would not be of any academic use within the classroom aside from entertainment. The dialogue of the book is noticeably written in a way that was meant for it to be read aloud. The text is simple, but does not require any form of inference or critical thinking. Although the story of facing a bully is something that many students could easily relate to, the message that this book sends in regards of dealing with this situation is not a positive one.
Das war mein erstes deutsches Buch, das ich gelesen habe. Ach du meine Güte! Ich fand es ziemlich hart. Aber es ist so eine süße Geschichte. Ich musste es beenden.
"Tyrone the Horrible" is a story about the conflicts between a small dinosaur named Boland and his bully Tyrone. Tyrone picked on Boland every day by taking his food and hurting him, and Boland was very scared of him. All the other dinosaurs told Boland to be nice to the big bully, but even then Tyrone continued to pick on him. Boland then tried to fight Tyrone, but he was no match for the dinosaur's strength and large mouth. Finally, Boland defeated the bully by putting spicy peppers in a sandwich that he knew Tyrone would steal, and because of the incredible amounts of spice, Tyrone never bullied Boland ever again.
This story attempts to teach children how to handle a bully. By using multiple methods, Boland shows that even though hope may seem lost, there is always a way to stop a bully. The resolution is funny and has a positive outlook, but I do not believe that taking revenge is the best thing to teach kids. By giving Tyrone the spicy sandwich, this book shows children that the only way to stop a bully is not by talking to them or being nice, but by physically harming them. I realize that not all bullies have a "change of heart" moment when you simply talk to them, but violence is never the answer even when it was inflicted on you first. I enjoyed the illustrations and the page layout very much, but I gave this book 2 stars because I am scared about the lesson it is teaching kids. I would not recommend this book to neither parents nor teachers; there are many other books within children's literature that teach kids more constructive ways of dealing with bullying.
Tyrone is one cool dinosaur! I have really enjoyed reading these books and wish they had been around when my boys were young. Bullies, cheaters and practical jokers need to be ignored when they force you to do what they want you to do. Hans Wilhelm's stories and wonderful illustrations give a jumping off point for conversations with children.
Originally read in German. My boyfriend suggested this book to as a way to train my practically non-existant German. It was one of his childhood favourites.
A nice little story about a tiny dinosaur beeing bullied by a bigger one.
LIAM'S REVIEW (7 years old) I liked when Tyrone dumped ice cream on Boland lol. When Boland got dumped with ice cream his face looks like he thinks it feels good lol. I loved this book.
Poor Boland is being bullied by Tyrone the Horrible. No matter what he tries, Tyrone refuses to stop. Tyrone's friends offer some of their own advice. Does Tyrone finally stop his bullying then?
Using the evaluation guide in the Children's Literature, Briefly book, we can see that there are many elements to consider when seeing if a text is well written such as; Believability, Style and language, Character, etc. This personally for me using the evaluation form, has it's pros and cons. I think the scores for Plot, Pacing, Character, Setting, and Theme would be a higher score versus Style and language and Believability having a lower score. This is a well rounded book with more pros than cons in the evaluation category. This makes it, in my opinion, a well written book that children and adults will enjoy!
Future Educators! An activity that you can do with your students is, have them create a scenario of a bully and a child, and have them create a solution to how they would deal with the problem. You can have them share it with partners or with the entire class. You know your students, so pick what you think is best!
A childhood favourite, and then a firm favourite with a boy I home-schooled. I can recite every line of this book word perfect and I still love it. I'm not quite sure its message on how to deal with bullies is one we should be encouraging in children (don't go tell a grown-up, just be smart and get back at them - and in the end we'll all be dead anyway!), however he does have a lovely group of very supportive friends, even if they don't always give very good advice. The illustrations are beautiful, and they alone are enough to illicit a smile or giggle from most children (and some adults), and regardless of the questionable message, the story is quite amusing.
Tyrone the Horrible is a children's book by Hans Wilhelm that teaches about overcoming bullies. With the dialogue used, you could see how you should be treated by others. There was an example of a bully and example of a true friend. This book left a good message; you shouldn't try to be someone you're not, the right people will eventaully appear. While this book was good, it wasn't really unique and it displayed a lot of the same things as many other children's books. For these reasons, I would give this book a 3/5. -Molly Lakritz
A short little story about Boland the dinosaur who has issues with Tyrone, another dinosaur who likes to pick on Boland. The book has cute and colorful illustrations but the book itself is a little outdated. The reading level is easy and can be good for beginner readers. It is a good story about standing up for yourself but to me, revenge is not the way to go about solving the issue. The illustrations are clear but not as vibrant and eye catching as more recent books. I do not think this is one I would purchase for my classroom.
Used to love this book as a kid. Looking at it as an adult I realize I still love the art, but the moral of the story is not great. Trick your bullies to get them to go away. Got it. Why not tell the adults? That would have been a better moral for children, I think.
I think the pictures in this book are beautiful and the story is cute in the beginning, but the ending is disappointing, I dont think it shows a good way for kids to deal with bullys. The dino that is being bully just does something mean to Tyrone (the bully) and that is a bad lesson for kids.
Jag gillar att Tyrre och honoms vänner heter olika i varje språk. Handlingen är inte så bra men helt okej. Meningar är inte för långa och också inte för lätta. Allt som allt är boken ganska bra för personer som läser ett nyt språk.
Tyrone- the horrible is a thrilling read that gives young readers a very good lesson about being strong and wise when it comes to deal with the bullies. In this story, boland, the victim, stood up for himself and so did his friends. He tried several ways to get rid of that bully, tyrone and eventually acquired success on his last creative attempt.
