From bestselling author Q.B. Tyler comes a new spicy forbidden romance releasing August 6, 2026!
River: Unlike my more responsible and settled older brother, I’ve always been considered the life of the party. Of course, women have used other words to describe me. Player. Womanizer. Heartbreaker. But I’m ready for a change. I’m ready to settle down. I want more than the random nights with faceless women who are too young for me. That is until I meet the charming, gorgeous twenty-one year old woman on my flight home. Our connection is instant. The tension is undeniable. And I find myself ignoring all of my prior convictions for a few weeks of fun before she heads off for college. Sure, I want to settle down, but nothing is wrong with some harmless fun in the meantime, right? Sloane: Okay, so I lied to the hot guy from the airport about my age. I’m nineteen, not twenty-one. And about what I’m doing here in the States after traveling with my family for the past decade. So, essentially everything. But he’ll never know. It’ll just be a fun fling before I start my senior year of high school. And sure, he’s a high school teacher, but that would be a ridiculous coincidence… right?
Amazon Top 15 Bestselling author and lover of forbidden romances, tacos, coffee, and wine, Q.B. Tyler gives readers sometimes angsty, sometimes emotional but always deliciously steamy romances featuring sassy heroines and the heroes that worship them. She's best known for writing forbidden (and sometimes taboo) romances, so if that's your thing, you've come to the right place. When she's not writing, you can usually find her on Instagram (definitely procrastinating), shopping or at brunch.
the things i put myself through for a +1 on a damn reading challenge. this is the last book by this author that i will ever read, i’m so serious. i got this far because i actually liked the nanny is off limits but it was def a right time sitch and i was a heaux for daddy rowan (or maybe i was a different person a year and a half ago, who’s to say?). book was insta lusty as hell much like this one, but this one was also just sooooo…meh and BORING. how you gonna make something this taboo so dry and consequently, leave me drier than the sahara? a true talent.
i’m not even going to critique much because i knew what i was getting into with the pace and lust/spice balance so allathat is neither here nor there or even a real factor in this rating. i was just so bored until the near end when i felt like i had inhaled laughing gas because things got so comical and i couldn’t stop laughing 🤣🤣. otherwise, there was no proper tension AND both mcs were hella annoying. river and sloane were flatter than a wet piece of cardboard trampled by a semi on the highway. and really, river was so stupid. ain’t no way this man was thinking with anything other than the little head in his pants for longer than a combined 10% of this book with some of the choices he made.
when i saw i had 3 or so chapters left and the events that were happening around this point were things that would be in the 50%-70% section of something logically paced, i was genuinely wondering how we were gonna wrap up fast. the struggle at the near end…i have no words. it was like watching someone give up writing the book and just being like damn — here’s an ending. doesn’t matter if it makes sense or not. honestly, this whole thing could have fit on half a post-it if you cut out all the repetition and uses of the word “hot” for how pointless it was but here we are…300 pages later. let me stop right here though before i devolve and really DO start on an unsolicited rant because i have more swirling in my brain but i’m trying to be more succinct these days 😀.
somehow, this was very quick to read since it required half a percent of brain power, so i finished it in a few hours without entertaining the voice in my head urging me to skim and be done. yay. i also liked getting a few scenes with my precious little isla but she was underutilized in my opinion. she was so adorable in the first book.
and btw, this could have easily been 1-1.5 stars but i’m feeling magnanimous because he had a thigh tat 🥲, so +0.5 for that alone and this is how we arrive here at this lovely 2. imma close the chapter on this duet now…and q.b. tyler. for good.
After spending most of her life being homeschooled abroad, 19-year-old Sloane Hunter returns to Maryland for her senior year of high school.
A meet cute at the airport leads to an unforgettable encounter with River Kincaid, a sexy, older man who exudes swagger and serious BDE.
A high school biology teacher and football coach, River is blindsided when he spots “plane girl” sitting front row of his biology class. Realizing she lied about her age, he immediately orders her to transfer out of his class and stay as far away from him as possible.
But avoiding each other proves easier said than done. As the new girl, Sloane quickly catches the attention of the boys her own age, while the chemistry between her and River becomes impossible to ignore. Before long, one lapse in judgment changes everything.
Gawd! The tension in this one was thick enough to cut with a knife. The chemistry between Sloane and River was absolutely electric, and Sloane’s maturity made the 19-year age gap feel almost inconsequential. I was completely invested in these two!

The Cheerleader is Off Limits by QB Tyler eARC Review 🖤
Holy hotness. This book is fire. The taboo, forbidden, age gap combo- I gobbled it right up.
River and Sloane meet each other at an airport and hit it off instantly. Their chemistry and attraction to one another is instant. After a HOT, filthy couple of weeks together it’s time for River to start the school year teaching Bio and being the head football coach. What he isn’t expecting is Sloane to show up on the first day as one of his students. Especially after she told him she was starting college and 21 years old. 🫣
The forbidden aspect of this one is perfection. I am obsessed with River and his filthy mouth. The man knows what he wants and even though he needs to stay away from Sloane…he just can’t help himself. 😏
HOT. HOT. HOT. I fricken devoured this book, left no crumbs and QB keeps her title- Queen of spice 🌶️
What to expect: Teacher x student Forbidden Age gap (19 years) Daddy kink Taboo Obsession
I absolutely gobbled this book up in one sittinggggg and had the best time with it😍
River & Sloane’s story was everything I hoped it would be. It was spicy, fun, packed with delicious tension, & every bit as forbidden as my little heart loves. Sloane may be young, but she’s incredibly mature & knows exactly what she wants… & what she wants is daddyyyy River🥵
Y’all… this man had me in an absolute chokehold from beginning to end. The hot AF older coach/teacher who tries so hard to stay away from the one woman he absolutely shouldn’t want!?!? SAY LESS. Oh, & he also likes to be called “daddy”…excuse me I’m feral💦🤣
If you’re looking for a quick, addictive, spicy read, I can’t recommend this one enough. You’ll devour it just as fast as I did!
Hot, drama-filled and naughty as hell! Just what I signed up for. I don't read QB Tyler for a believable situation and that certainly wasn't what I was presented with. It was a wild ride from start to finish.
After reading The Nanny is Off Limits, I was looking forward to seeing River get his HEA, with a good side of drama as well. Boy did he ever. He almost bit off more than he could chew. In fact, in a more sensible world, he would be in deep trouble. But I enjoyed each and every minute of his struggle.
I honestly think Sloane had him fighting for his life. She does lie about quite a few facts without thought to what the consequences for another person's life might be. However, she is 19 and I think her level of smarts depends on if she is feeling horny for River at any given moment, and you know what? Girl, same.
I think one of QB's strengths is that she presents situations where I feel the taboo and forbidden nature, but I give in and suspend disbelief. Her books never feel DARK or heavy to me, which could very easily happen in these topics if River DIDN'T feel guilty about wanting Sloane. IF he's gung-ho about banging a student... he's a creep. But somehow it works.
I can't read books like this all the time anymore, but if I do, QB is the author I go to for the thrill. Just strap in, and let it ride!
This was Dual Narrated by Jason Clarke & Megan Wicks. Very sexy and excellent job.
4 Stars 4 on the spice scale
CW: Power dynamic, Student/Teacher relationship ;)
*Thank you to Must Love Audio and the author for an ALC of this title.*
I’ve read plenty of age-gap romances without blinking, but this one was both painfully dull and deeply icky. I’m not rooting for a 40-year-old man, even in fiction, who has apparently never dated anyone his own age but always chases women nearly half his age.
A quick, little smutty read. I feel like I’m serving time in literary jail trying to get through a stupid rh duet. I swear every single character has the intellect and survival skills of a dodo bird. 🦤 It’s killing me slowly, fam. But, Ack, I want to know how it ends, so I continue in this ridiculous, self imposed suffering. ANYWAY. I picked this up for a break.
Spoilery thoughts…
FMC lies to a hot stranger about her age. She’s 19 but claims to be 21. MMC (37 I think) is a hs football coach/teacher, who is a bit of a manwhore. His brother has found ‘the one’ (I believe it’s a previous book) and seeing his happy family has got our MMC thinking about settling down too.
Although FMC is young at 21, MMC and FMC have intense chemistry and decide to have a hot fling before she goes to college.
On the first day of school FMC walks into her brand new high school and walks into MMC’s class. FMC is like, ‘oh shiz, what are the odds?’ MMC immediately shits enough bricks to build himself a prison cell.
Shenanigans ensue. Private parts cannot be separated in the face of all this hot chemistry. Lots of sneaking around. HEA.
It was okay. It definitely had some hot sexy times. I didn’t necessarily feel an all consuming love for the ages. The MMC seemed pretty immature and the FMC overly mature, so I guess they’re a good match there. I don’t think I’d be placing money on their long term odds though. 🤷♀️
Oh help me baby Tom Cruise, do I have to go back to the crappy rh again now? Send help, Tom. 🙏
This is so so upsetting to me bc I REALLY loved TNIOL and have been looking forward to this one since she announced it originally!!
I made it through chapter 2 and I just can’t move past the quality of writing, which I don’t typically find issue with in QBs books! Idk if she rushed to get this out bc people have been waiting for it but it needed another round of editing just judging from the prologue and first 2 chapters.
When River is at the bar flirting with the birthday girl her hair goes from red to blonde to red. I had to keep going back to make sure I didn’t miss that some other woman was being talked about.
Also two almost identical chunks of inner monologue were copy + pasted.
Ch 1:
But my older brother, Rowan, and his new fiancée Ellie’s words are ringing in my ear for the thousandth time. “Don’t you want to settle down?” “Maybe you should start dating women who are closer to your age?” This also makes my brother a hypocrite, given that Ellie is almost twenty years younger than him, even though she acts like my mother most days. I roll my eyes inwardly, thinking about the last conversation I had with my future sister-in-law after a few too many beers, when I broke down and told her that I did want to meet someone. Now she’s made it her mission to press me about it every time I fuck someone. Yes, I want to meet someone, but can’t a guy have fun in the meantime?
Ch 2:
I roll my eyes inwardly, thinking about the last conversation I had with Ellie after a few too many beers, when I broke down and told her that I did want to meet someone, but evidently, my intimacy issues and “my inability to approach anyone over the age of twenty-two” make it impossible. Ellie’s words. Now, she’s made it her mission to press me about it every time I fuck someone. “Don’t you want to settle down?” “Maybe you should start dating women who are closer to your age?” Yes, I would like to meet someone, but can’t a guy have fun in the meantime? Was last night even that fun, though?
Overall, I just couldn’t give more time to this one unfortunately bc I do have other books I want to read and I know I’d be distracted by the lack of editing.
River was the fun uncle in The Nanny Off Limits, and that’s exactly why I liked him. He provided a great contrast to Rowan. However, his level of maturity as a 38-year-old male protagonist really suited the 21 year old college student—oh sorry, 19 year old high school student. At the start, he was keen on settling down and starting a family, yet not once did he make a decision that actually worked toward that goal. The very reason he ended up in this situation was that he’d been acting like a typical fuckboy. He constantly emphasized the significant age gap, but when it came to taking risks, he was usually the driving force. We don't really get any character growth from either of them. I enjoyed the cameo by his brother and his brother's family from the first book. The spice scenes were great, and as usual QBT’s writing style flows easily, making for a fast read.
Side note: I can hardly believe QBT actually released the book when she said she would, we only had to wait nearly two and a half years. It’s better than her last release Wilder Saint, but compared to my re-read of The Nanny Is Off Limits, I get the feeling she isn't putting the same heart into it as she used to.
4.5 stars - I ate this one up in one sitting! River and Sloane were the definition of everything I love about a good, spicy age gap romance. Throw in the forbidden element of their relationship, and this was a good time.
Even though there was a lot of delightful spice, QB still built an emotional connection between the characters from the moment they met. I could’ve read two hundred more pages about them, they were a fun couple!
SN - It was also great seeing River with his brother’s family (Rowan’s book is The Nanny Is Off Limits)! He was so cute as the best uncle ever. Family scenes always make me smile!
Listen…I read ALL the triggers and knew what I was getting into, BUT I had hoped for a little more plot? I don’t mind insta-love/lust per se, BUT this was just a little too far-fetched even for me (and I have read some crazy books in my time).
There really wasn’t much plausibility in this story- our 38 yr old MMC was making the DUMBEST decisions this entire book and was willing to blow up his entire life for this one random girl he met on a plane? I just couldn’t do it. And he started giving me the ick with all his jealousy over her wanting to do normal things for someone her age.
The story is 2⭐️, but the audio performances were 5 ⭐️ (Megan Wicks & Jason Clarke can do NO WRONG in any book they narrate), so we’ll split the difference and give this 3⭐️. I was here for a good time, not a long time 😅.
okay… i’m going to sound like a hater, but that was not good. we were going in circles. 🫠 we were almost halfway through the book, and he’s STILL bringing up, “but she’s nineteen.” ? and why was ellie, rowan’s wife, pushing him so hard to get married? she kind of annoyed me with that, because why are you blowing up his phone?? 😐 weird.
also, the fmc, sloane… do you not have any hobbies, girl? 😭 my goodness. it was like cheer and this man were her whole life. i got super bored during this one, and the tension just wasn’t there. you had the “forbidden teacher student” trope, but they just did it every five seconds, so… was it really forbidden?
the ending was also super rushed and odd. rowan’s reaction was so… dramatic. why are we YELLING? 🫠
i'm so disappointed. :(
“Let’s just say, thank God you’re not in my class.”
“Hey, none of that. I’m here and nothing is going to change between us. Whatever happens at this point, I still want this with you.”
“You’re trouble when you drink,” she tells me. “You were already trouble for me sober.”
It was never in question whether I was going to love this book, Q.B. Tyler never disappoints. She does forbidden romance so incredibly well, and this was no exception. I devoured this book in less than 5 hours.
My only complaint was that I needed more of these two. I’m obsessed. 😩♥️
Going into it, I was a little nervous because I typically don’t read age-gap romances where the FMC is still in high school. I was worried it would make me uncomfortable, but Q.B. Tyler handled it thoughtfully. She makes it very clear from the start that the FMC is 19 years old, acknowledges the age gap throughout the story, and emphasizes that the MMC never takes advantage of her. They don’t even meet until she’s already 19, which gave me a lot of peace of mind while reading.
My only real criticism is that I wish it had been longer. The ending felt a little abrupt, and I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to these characters.
Overall, another 10/10 ⭐️ for Q.B. Tyler. Thank you for the ARC I absolutely loved it, and now I’m just wishing there were a few more chapters.
Tropes - Forbidden Romance -Age Gap -Football coach/Cheerleader -Teacher/Student
Douse me in holy water. Because the forbidden in this. 🔥
River x Sloane Teacher/coach x student/cheerleader 38 x 19 And it is very explicit that she is of age. And a consenting adult. Even though she tells a little lie about her age. But after reading book 1, their maturity levels kind of matched 🤣 Lots of sneaking around.
This was fast paced. And under 300 pages. I honestly wanted maybe a little more there at the end.
I loved the thornberrys reference!
If you’re looking for something taboo with an actual storyline this series should go on your TBR.
I absolutely loved River's character in the first book, so I was beyond excited to finally get his story.
River (38) has just wrapped up football training camp when he meets Sloan (19) at the airport. They instantly click, but after parting ways he assumes he'll never see her again...until he discovers she secretly slipped her phone number into his carry-on. Cute? Absolutely.
They spend the next couple of weeks getting to know each other, with River believing Sloan is about to start college. Plot twist: she's actually returning for her senior year of high school after being homeschooled while traveling the world with her parents. And if you've read enough romance novels, you probably know exactly where this is headed...
Sure enough, Sloan ends up in River's biology class. The forbidden romance angle becomes the central conflict as they try—and repeatedly fail—to stay away from each other. During Homecoming, Sloan's date, who is also a football player, catches them after the act. Surprisingly, the fallout is far less dramatic than I anticipated though. Everything wraps up quickly and neatly, and River ultimately finds a way to pursue his dream of coaching college football while staying in Sloan's life.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, but this one just didn't hit the same for me. Honestly, some of my favorite moments were the cameos from Rowan, Ellie, and the kids. River and Sloan's relationship felt a little underdeveloped, and I never fully bought into the depth of their connection. There was definitely plenty of chemistry, but I found myself wanting more emotional substance. The ending also came together so quickly that I had to double-check I didn't accidentally miss a bonus epilogue or another version that didn't time jump so quickly.
This author is well known for writing spicy, taboo romances, so I knew what I was getting into. Even so, this particular storyline wasn't entirely for me. And can we talk about how many times some version of "That's hot" was said? By the end, I was half expecting Paris Hilton to make a surprise cameo or be announced as a co-author. The only other thing that threw things off for me was the fact that River was with someone the day before he met the FMC and some editing/consistency errors.
Overall, while this wasn't the River story I'd been hoping for, it wasn't a bad read—it just didn't live up to my expectations. I still highly recommend "The Nanny Is Off Limits" and if you're already invested in this series or enjoy the author's style, there's still a good chance you'll enjoy this one too.
We all know that Q.B. Tyler writes unhinged books. Some of them are good, and some of them are cringe ... this one is the latter.
I couldn't finish this because it was boring.
She's his 19 year-old student and he's her 38 year-old teacher ... I'm all for an age gap, but not when it's essentially a teenager ... and let's face it, Sloane, the FMC, thinks she's so mature and worldly, but she's a kid. And River the MMC, who is the ultimate fuckboy, should've known better.
So incredibly boring. More than half the book he stays away then he makes the cliche stupid mistake when he finally gives in. I didn’t like either of them. Not much personality she is a teenager who parties a lot he is a manwhore who decides to like her I guess. Ya thats it not much of a story.
Dual narration 5/5 - picked this up because of Megan Whicks narration Story 2,75/5 I’m bored! This was a DNF - I didn’t really care! I’m getting a cappuccino after 12 o’clock in Italy! What a blasphemy! 😱 No it’s not! 😆Trust me, Italians are nice and very happy to sell you whatever you want! ☺️ Here’s my why (if you missed the updates!):
“2 chapters in the audiobook and want dnf... I purchased& regret it... why!? Because the book starts with MMC having a brunette (he just met in his lap) then he zooms in on a gorgeous redhead 22yo birthday-girl and we get all the details, heavy flirting, he sleeps with said redhead! and you would think that's the FMC! Wrong! That's not the FMC - the FMC is a blonde he meets the next morning (after he slept with the readhead! “

This plot was a little boring for an age-gap romance and the pacing was off. The story read more like a spicy novella with the resolution ending in an outline format. Spicy scenes and dirty talk were 5-stars but the story itself wasn’t memorable and there wasn’t enough page time where the MCs were actually together to make their HEA believable.
I high hopes for River’s story because I loved him in The Nanny is Off Limits, so I was expecting more depth than this story delivered.
Chefs kiss 😮💨 This book was SO good! I was completely hooked from start to finish, and these two together?! 🥹 They are seriously the cutest. I loved their chemistry and the way their relationship developed.
And the spice? 🥵🔥 QB Tyler did NOT come to play! Definitely one of those books where you’re just sitting there like 👀😮💨
Oh how I missed QB’s writing!! River Kincaid 🫠🥵🔥 is all I have to say. 10/10 no notes and why you are the QUEEN of spicy taboo romance. I DEVOURED this book in a day. Not sure what you put in these books but they never disappoint.
The chemistry between River & Sloane is IMMEDIATE and you can feel it coming off the pages.
Sloane was such a fierce sassy FMC and I loved it! Yes she was 19 years younger than River but she had no issue speaking her mind, telling him exactly what she wants and pursuing this relationship even though he’s her teacher 🤭
River Kincaid is a the newest “daddy” and I’m OBSESSED. This man was a “fuck boy” through and through however he had his reasons for no relationships. He decides he finally wants to settle down and enter Sloane. 2 weeks is what it took for him to fall until the truth comes out.
The tension, forbidden romance and SPICE was all top tier and I wanted more.
Thank you so much for the ARC
💙Cheerleader x football coach 📣Age Gap 💙Forbidden/Taboo 📣Student x teacher 💙SPICY
Megan Wicks & Jason Clarke absolutely crushed this audiobook performance! It’s narrated in dual and they really did a fantastic job to bring Sloane & River to life! I couldn’t stop listening to them! And this book is so deliciously perfect! It’s hot and steamy, plus that forbidden aspect makes it even better!! Their chemistry is there right away from that first meeting in the airport and I was loving it! I also loved how Sloane had no problem asking for and going after what she wants…and that just so happened to be River! If you want a spicy good time and these tropes are ones you enjoy, definitely add this to your TBR!
What to expect: -age gap (38 & 19) -teacher x student -football coach x cheerleader -forbidden -daddy kink -secret relationship -hidden identity
Big thank you to QB Tyler and Must Love Audio for letting me listen to this one!
tl;dr I love a good insta-lust moment, and this book had that in spades but I still don't understand why the main characters fell in love...
This is a hot taboo book, but the challenge I had with it (despite having fun reading it) was that I can't buy the main characters falling in love. There's absolutely no emotional connection; we never witness meaningful conversations or the two even emotionally connecting. Rather we're just told about how Sloane is mature because she's traveled the world a lot and they spend time together, but there's no real evidence of a deepening emotional connection. This made it hard for me to really connect with them as a couple end of day and made this a weaker QB Tyler book for me.
Oh geez. I was really looking forward to this one and I think I missed the plot? Like, literally. Where was the romance? I know QB Tyler is know for taboo relationships, but this was just pure spice. The ending felt rushed and incomplete. All the good relationship building, falling in love, admitting feelings were glazed over and then it just ended. 🤷🏻♀️ I really enjoyed the first one so I’m confused why this one felt so different.
Things to know: Age gap Teacher x student (Unknowingly at first) Spicy
2–2.5ish⭐️ River Kincaid, you disappointed me. I liked you in book one and had high hopes, but wow, you were bloody dull as dishwater in this one 🥱. This was just a yawn fest for me and not the fun forbidden read I was expecting, especially after enjoying many of the author’s books. That’s it.
I was honestly so disappointed 😭 I’ve been waiting for this book ever since reading the nanny is off limits and it just didn’t hit. I felt like it was finally going somewhere and then realized I was already 75% through the book :/ The ending was rushed and so not realistic. And we missed so much of their actual relationship building… I kept looking down at how much of the book was left and getting upset

Tropes & Notes Age Gap (He’s 38/ She’s 19) • Taboo • Forbidden Love • He’s a Playboy • She Lies About Her Age • Teacher/ Student • Football Coach/ Cheerleader
Recap Quickie River and Sloane meet at an airport bar as they’re both flying home to Maryland. River to gear up for his next school year as a high school football coach and bio teacher and Sloane as a senior transfer student to the very same high school (unbeknownst to them).
Only... Sloane tells River she’s 21 and starting college.
The two connect instantly and River is hesitant to see Sloane due to [what he thinks is] a 17-year age gap. But once they return to Maryland, their chemistry is too hard to ignore. They fall hard and fast for each other.
Until two weeks later when Sloane walks into River’s biology classroom as his newest student and suddenly their situation becomes very different.
My Thoughts This was my first Q.B. Tyler book and will not be my last. The writing felt seasoned, the characters were a ton of fun, and the spice was top notch! Here are some of my favorite parts:
1.The timeline: I loved how the timeline jumped around a bit! I read this book in 24 hours (which is rare for my slow-reader-ass), and I think the timeline was part of what kept me hooked! 2.The FMC: Normally I don’t love a 19-year-old FMC (love them in real life just not in my romance novels), but Sloane was h*rny and flirty and not afraid to ask for what she wanted! Ok ok, she lied and caused some BIG issues but if she hadn’t she and River might not have ended up together!!!! See!? 3.The spice: I love finding new-to-me authors who know how to write a hot, detailed, multi-page s*x scene. With dirty talk, the right balance between physical and emotional, and a just-when-you-think-it’s-over-it’s-not moment. Q.B. is all of these and more! 4.The length: I love me an 8 hour book! More of these please! This was the perfect length! I loved the quick wrap up and the short and sweet epilogue too!
Narrator Vibes Megan Wicks was the queen per usual. Her sultry alto voiced Sloane exquisitely! Sloane, again, is 19 but she feels far from it in most of the book. Megan is an excellent choice for any raspy FMC! And Jason Clarke was the king per usual. Is there anything better than grumpy Jason Clarke? Nope, there sure isn’t. And we got to hear that side of him here along with MANY other fabulous sides. Narration with these two was A+!
40+ Reader Appeal? (Not Considered in Rating) I can see how some readers (of any age) may have concerns about the age gap but I felt very comfortable with it- the way it was written. Q.B. tackled some real issues that would come up in this type of real-life situation which I appreciated. I think other 40+ readers will too!
This book is proof that a relationship can be surprisingly healthy while the two people in it have absolutely no sense of self-preservation.
River and Sloane are actually great together. Once the initial lie is out of the way, they communicate! They say what they mean! They admit when they’re jealous! They tell each other when they’re interested! River even tells Sloane about the date he went on with another woman instead of conveniently forgetting to mention it until chapter 37 when it can cause a completely unnecessary misunderstanding.
Even the tiny bit of other-man drama is refreshingly reasonable. Sloane makes it clear to Mack that homecoming is a friend date. When he asks if she might reconsider, she tells him no. Nobody is secretly keeping backup options around. Nobody cheats. Nobody spends half the book pretending they don’t have feelings they very obviously have.
It’s all remarkably emotionally healthy.
Logistically, however, these two are idiots.
Because River and Sloane understand perfectly well that getting caught could blow up his entire career. They discuss this. Repeatedly. They agree they need boundaries. Repeatedly.
And then apparently neither one of them can keep their pants on long enough to remember those boundaries.
These two could have had a perfectly lovely secret relationship if they possessed even a teaspoon of impulse control. Instead, every attempt at We absolutely cannot do this anymore lasts approximately until the next time they’re within touching distance.
And River voluntarily chaperoning homecoming, getting jealous of Sloane’s perfectly platonic date, and then summoning her upstairs was truly a master class in creating your own emergency. Sir. You did not even have to be there. 😂
I also appreciated that Mack never became the villain. He had every right to be mad when he discovered what was happening—not because Sloane owed him romance, but because SHE WAS HIS DATE. Sneaking away from your homecoming date is rude! Mack basically had to become the only person in this situation with enough common sense to say, I’m not going to ruin your life, Coach, but could you two PLEASE stop being stupid? Some of us are trying to get recruited here.
There’s plenty of spice, but underneath it is a surprisingly sweet relationship. They genuinely like each other, their families are supportive, there’s no cheating, very little outside drama, and most of the conflict comes from two people knowing exactly what they should do and then doing the exact opposite because they cannot stay away from each other.
