Join the Miller children as they learn about health, safety, and courtesy... from the Bible! Each story includes a Scripture passage and illustrates various aspects of prudent living. Read about the foolish joke that ended in tragedy; the embarrassing consequences of not getting enough sleep; how Timmy gets lost in a big store, and the Mother's Day fire!
This might have been my favorite of the Miller Family books, maybe because the cover is purple :) but there's plenty of good stuff on the inside as well...like a lesson about "judging a book by its cover"--or, as you might guess, a person by skin color. No, really, it's a good story about a family who visits the Millers' church one Sunday.
The first chapter is an overview of the whole book: the Millers will be studying the concept of prudence during their nightly family devotions, sharing what the Bible says about manners, healthy and unhealthy habits, safety, "stranger danger," and courtesy in public AND at home.
Enrichment alert: meaning, when the book you're reading mentions other books that you decide to read. Like LITTLE WOMEN references PILGRIM'S PROGRESS, some Shakespeare plays. UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, THE PICKWICK PAPERS and other Dickens works, and a few 18th-century plays or novels. In PRUDENCE, a chapter in which eldest Miller sibling Sharon starts spending her nights reading in bed by flashlight names several of the books she devours by night, and two of them I hadn't heard of until then, and later I ordered, read, and loved them!
PRUDENCE introduces a few Miller relatives, presents chapters "Play the Man" and "Laura Learns to Be a Lady" back-to-back, and ends "Sharon Does the Cooking" with a Miller-family recipe and "Timmy's Trip to Town" with some tips from Timmy. And every so often Sharon offers an instructive little rhyme. To be precise: PRUDENCE is primo.
We love the Miller books. Really enjoying reading 1 chapter a day and really letting the topic of that chapter soak in. Put this book into our Morning time basket..krb 2/19/16
Looking forward to reading this over and over..krb 4/21/16
I didn't think my son would love this devotional as much as he did! I gave it a 3.5 star rating and he wanted to give it a 5! LOL!! So we settled on 4...
The Miller books espouse very traditional values - its getting harder to find books that do.... This particular volume covered our Health subject for homeschooling as it discusses health and safety issues, as well as etiquette.
I used this book and its accompanying workbook during our unit on the human body. My favorite chapter is "Hot-Shot Henry" and my boys find me reminding them of his fate often.
I read this book when I was 8 years old. My Mom has also read this series out loud to us, reading a chapter each night to go along with our family devotions.
Good way to introduce certain topics of health and wisdom. Some topics need further discussion as we may not be in full agreement with how they are presented.
This was a very practical children's book. It goes through a family who has family devotionals each night on Proverbs. It talks about prudence; things like cleanliness and neatness.
