Life on Earth is over and it's up to 251 teens aboard the starship Galahad to save the human race
This is the omnibus edition of the first two books in Dom Testa's Galahad series for young adults, The Comet's Curse (2009) and The Web of Titan (2010).
When the tail of the comet Bhaktul flicks through the Earth's atmosphere, deadly particles are left in its wake. Suddenly, mankind is confronted with a virus that devastates the adult population. Only those under the age of eighteen seem to be immune. Desperate to save humanity, a renowned scientist proposes a bold plan: to create a ship that will carry a crew of 251 teenagers to a home in a distant solar system. Two years later, the Galahad and its crew--none over the age of sixteen--is launched.
Two years of training have prepared the crew for the challenges of space travel. But soon after departing Earth, they encounter one crisis after another: a saboteur has stowed away on their ship; a mysterious metal pod orbiting Titan must be captured; an illness arrives onboard that is beyond their medical experience; and Galahad's systems begin to fail. Sixteen-year-old commander Triana Martell and her council must find a way to overcome all obstacles. For if their mission fails, it will mean the end of the human race.
Wow. Was not expecting the turn this took but loving it!! I guess I didn't know where the story would go but I'm really impressed. It's interesting and a great read. Plus it has one style of a character that is my favourite, Mr Sarcastic named Roc (who is also a talking computer - think, The Jetsons.'
I can't grab the next book in this series and so glad I brought all 3 omnibus books at once.
Definitely recommend if you like teens in space and....
A great adventure with rather realistic and generally likable characters. The dynamic between the group is an amusing mix of friendship and seriousness, much like an actual crew headed on an adventure for the rest of their lives. I oved the blend between the world below (Earth) and their own struggles on the ship as it added just a little bit of extra flavor (at least in the first book). At the same time, the mystery kept the book interesting and the out come was not what I expected (for both books). A perfect blend of the people and the action helped to grasp my attention throughout the book and left me wanting more.
A nice surprise in YA sci-fi. Not nearly as much protracted angst that sometimes weighs down the genre but sti with plenty of genre, action, and characters who are unique and intelligent. Enjoyed this a lot and can't wait to continue into books 3 and 4 kn the next volume.
While it did take me forever to read this book, I did really enjoy it. There were a few things that needed work though, such as the romance and how things weren't really described. The author didn't really talk much about how things looked and while I usually don't need a whole lot of that, it was kind of hard to imagine a space craft without a bit more detail and description. I was still able to imagine it but only vaguely. Overall, this was a great book and I can't wait to pick up the next one.
