Lawson Daniel is good at a lot of things. He can show you the best places to surf, the perfect time of day to ride the tide. He knows the best bars, the best bands, he has the best weed, and if you’re looking to get laid, he’ll show you the best time.

No girl in her right mind should speak to him. She definitely shouldn’t have sex with him, and only a blind, self-loathing idiot would fall in love with him.

I’ve done all three.

All in the span of one sweltering, suffering summer that nearly cost me everything down to the blood in my body and the beat of my heart.

No one walked away from that season unscathed.

Not even Lawson Daniel.

Lawless is a stand alone romance by Tracey Ward. It’s my first book of Tracey’s. This is one of those rare times when there just aren’t enough stars to rate this book! The writing is poetic, so beautiful it swept me away. The end of the first chapter left me absolutely breathless. I thought I knew what I was getting when I started this book but I was so very wrong. It was so much more than I could have ever imagined!

Rachel Mason is twenty one years old. The entire book is told from her point of view. It worked but I do have to admit there were times when I would have loved to know what was going on in Lawson’s head. I also want to say, here, that I generally avoid new adult romance but there wasn’t one moment while reading this book that I felt like the characters were immature in any way. Just the opposite really. Rachel is a very talented pianist.

Lawson Daniel is also twenty one. Lawson is a very talented surfer. Both he and Rachel live in the very small coastal California town of Isla Azul. Lawson has a reputation around town for being that guy, the one that hangs out on the beach all day, drinks endlessly and has a different girl every night.

Even though Lawson and Rachel have known of each other all their lives, they’ve maybe spoken three times. But then that day happened that brought them together. The day that changed everything.

“That’s Lawson to a T. Alluring and terrifying. Beautiful and dangerous.”

Rachel thought she knew who Lawson was but she was so wrong. She saw what everyone else saw, the parts that Lawson let them see. But now she is getting to know the real Lawson. The smart, sexy, talented man who is compassionate and caring. The worst thing she could ever do is fall for him.

“Say it again, Rachel,” he murmurs, his lips against the sensitive skin of my stomach. “Say my name again.”
“Lawson.”

I could probably spend two more pages gushing about this book, about the beauty of Tracey Ward’s words. At the way she made me feel while reading this. I felt every emotion that Rachel felt. I fell in love with Lawson right along with her. I cheered for both of them as they sought their dreams, as they fell in love. I wasn’t prepared for this book. But now that I’ve read it, it has wound itself inside my heart where it will live forever. During breaks from reading, I found myself searching through Tracey’s other work because you can rest assured that I will be reading more from her. But for now, I hope I have convinced you to pick up this book. I hope you fall in love with Lawson and Rachel, and with all of Tracey Ward’s words, just as I did.

Can I just say wow? I don't even know where to start with this book. It absolutely floored me, I loved it from beginning to end and I could not put it down. It's one of those books that has left me staring at my cursor trying to come up with an adequate way to at least describe what I read, and tell you how I feel about it. I'm not sure I can.

Tracey Ward is a new-to-me author, Lawless is the very first book I've read by her. It is not my typical type of read, lets go over why. It's in first person, it is young adult, synopsis didn't do much for me. So, why did I end up reading it exactly? The cover. I kid you not, I kept coming back to this cover. There was just something about it and I decided to read the book based purely on that. Mind you, it could have been a few other things. I grew up in CA, I love the beach, the ocean and... yeah. Surfers. :D However, aside from the surfer bit, it really was the cover.

Lawless starts out with a bang, hits the ground running and you don't slow down. There are no lull's in the writing, no awkwardness, and frankly, nothing is predictable about this couple. I went through this book so engrossed in it, that I didn't snag any quotes, or even moments to mention. A few really stand out to me, but I would consider even mentioning them a spoiler and the spoilers in this, even if mild, would give so much away. I fully believe this book is best read with no knowledge of what you're opening the front cover too, because then you can fall into the writing.

The characters themselves are ingeniously written. From the hero and heroine, to the co-stars. The banter alone in Lawless makes this worth reading because you will crack up laughing at the interactions between Rachel and her parents. Her inner monologue, all of it.

Rachel is getting out of her little home town, where everyone knows everyone and no one has secrets. You get judged, or misjudged by the vast majority of whoever is concerned and the whole town will make something their business. Lawless opens with her laying on the beach, with her best friend and soaking up the last rays of the sun before she has to leave for Boston the next morning.

Events transpire (yup, that's def the way I'm going to keep massive spoilers from slipping in. :P ) that put Rachel in the path of Lawson Daniels. A guy she's "known-of" her whole life. As she's pointed out, they've talked all of four times, and once was in grade school when he pointed out she had a booger in her nose. Heh, these two don't actually -know- each other, but when you live in a small town, everyone thinks they know you. Even when they don't.

What spins out from there is a summer love story about two people who finally "meet" and, see each other for who the other really is, and it's just bad timing. It is a story that will grab you, hold onto you tight and take you for a whirlwind roller coaster ride of emotions. I laughed at this book, I sobbed over this book, I stared at it wanting to shake something, and when it finally ended, I let out the biggest, heartfelt sigh.

I'm not sure if I will ever read another Tracey Ward book. I would honestly like to think so, as much as I loved this one. I guess it would just have to hit the right niche for me, like this one did. Or maybe if there is a spin off about Rachel's best friend. ;) Either way, when it comes to Lawless... I would say read it. I would say have a box of tissues on hand. I would encourage you to prepare to want to bite your nails off. I would tell you not to drink things while reading this, because you might actually spit something. Above all, I'm going to leave you with, if you do read it, I hope you loved it as much as I did.

4 Those Daniel Guys Stars

What a fantastic read that had me stopping everything else in my day to read. I couldn't wait to see how this played out with Rachel going away to music school.

I loved the characters and there easy banter --- this is what is considered a light read with a bit of humor in it!

Rachel's father is definitely the comic relief in this book and had me cracking up in the beginning.

Law is fantastic especially with his past and how the town views him. He definitely had me swooning!

Great book for a day of relaxing in the sun!

Not what I expected...

Meet Lawson Daniel

He supposed to be a bad boy

but it turns out he's not.

He's kind of sweet, caring boy who's helping Rachel to overcome her fears.

"It's okay to be hurt and it's okay to be scared, but you gotta get over it. You're hurt in your head as much as you are in your leg and you can't just act like it's not happening and expect it to go away."

I like books with lots of drama, angst, fighting and tears so this book didn't actually work for me in the way I wanted it. It's an easy, sweet read. If you're looking for something like that, this book is for you.

3 stars.

Lawless... le sigh... I give this one a big ol' 4.5 stars. It's an easy sweet read. If you want something to read when you go to the beach or right after a really intense read this is the way to go.

Now just because it is light doesn't mean that it doesn't have substance. Rachel Mason is prepping to finally make her way to college after having waited for several years to get into the program of her dreams... but right before it's time for her to get on a plane and say farewell for now to California a life changing occurrence happens and through her striving to cope and stay on track with her goals she is forced to re-evaluate her life and what she has been working for.

Lawson Daniel, Mmmmmmmm! This guy is referred to by his full name and whenever you refer to someone by their full name it is clear that they are something special. He has surfing in his blood, he's known as a player, and he is keeping more than one secret under wraps.

These two together are humorous while being thoughtful and most of all honest. I love the way that Tracey Ward doesn't always go the way that you think that she is going to go. She may have characters get to where you think they might go but they usually take a different route than you expect to get there. I highly recommend this one!

3.5 Stars

Overall Opinion: This was a cute, easy read. After reading the synopsis I expected a little more angst, but it was kinda a fluffy read. I rate it at 3.5 because it's better than "just ok", but not by much. The characters were cute and the premise was interesting, but this book might end up being forgotten with time--not all that memorable.

Storyline: This is Rachel and Lawson's story. They both grew up in the same town with each other, but had always been just acquaintances. Right before Rachel is going to leave CA to go to Boston for college (she's wants to become a concert pianist) at NEC, Rachel goes to the beach with her best friend. While there she gets in the water and ends up being attacked by a shark! Luckily the town's celebrity surfer, Lawson, happened to be in the water at the same time and saved her. After her attack, she ends up staying for the summer and is constantly bumping into Lawson. They finally connect and end up falling in love. With some self identity struggles as well as family struggles, the couple is separated. But in the end they are reunited and find their HFN.

POV: Rachel's POV

Overall Pace of Story: Fast. This was a really quick, easy read...but it didn't feel rushed to me.

H rating: 4 stars. Lawson. He was labeled as trouble in their small town, but seemed to be just a lonely, misunderstood guy. I liked how he pushed Rachel to confront her fears.

h rating: 3 stars. Rachel. Just ok...nothing really to tip the scales to put her into like or dislike status

Angst level: Low. Much lower than I expected...no tissues required

Heat level: Low. I wouldn't necessarily say they are fade to black, but they are more about the emotional vs. the physical.

Descriptive sex: Not really (see above)

Sex scene with OW or OM:

Cheating:

Possible Triggers:

Closure: This was not enough closure for me. I don't feel secure in their relationship, as it would have been nice to have a more solid commitment for the couple. There were still some questions I wanted answered.

Update: I reread this 5/10/2020 and my previous review was spot on. I loved the storyline, the characters and the supporting characters. It was well written, sweet, sexy, intriguing and enjoyable; yet I wanted more from Lawson, which could have been accomplished through his POV. And four years later, I still craved a series - even if only for the main secondary story. No spoilers, so no elaboration, but you’ll know it when you see it! 😀 Following was my original review:

Lawless was a quick and easy read with great characters and a great storyline.

Lawson Daniels exemplified the typical drop dead gorgeous sexy hero that is the object of every female's dream. Add in his intelligence, surfer attitude and enigmatic nature, and he's close to perfect. Rachel Mason was beautiful, driven, and practical with a set of dreams that she's had planned out in detail for years.

Ward walked us through the attraction and budding relationship in detail and with anticipation. I loved that the storyline wasn't predictable and included a few plot twists without impractical angst.

Lawless was from Rachel's point of view. Therefore, Lawson was mysterious and although he was alluring, I desired more character development for him. Furthermore, for a small town, I felt there should have been more to their story growing up that led them to the present day. The additional backstory would have provided increased depth and substance.

Lastly, I loved the supporting cast. There are so many different stories that can be written. I don't see anything regarding a series yet, but I'm hopeful. This would also give Ward the opportunity to show the continued development of Lawson and Rachel, which I'm craving.

All I all, it was enjoyable and I look forward to more from Ward.

I love a good beach book, I'm a water baby after all, so I will get drawn right in. This one had me right from the beginning. I loved it. I loved the characters. Loved that I was laughing and smiling through it. But then around 75%, it just kinda got depressing. Not a big fan of light and airy turning sad and depressing.
In the end, I still liked it, but editing was fairly atrocious.

This is such a funny and sweet story. I love when they've always thought of someone as one way and they turn out to be completely different.
Rachel and Lawson have known each other their whole lives and even run in the same circle but haven't even spoken a handful of times. But then Lawson saves her and suddenly she can't get rid of him. Rachel decides to just go with it and enjoy his friendship until she leaves for the east coast for school but life never turns out how you want it too.
I loved Rachel and Lawson. They were just too cute and their conversations alone are worth getting this book. I laughed so much and even when I wasn't physically laughing the hubby says I was making faces lol.
I really enjoyed the side characters too and wouldn't be against Katy getting a book *hint hint*.

I was given an eArc by the author and this is my honest review.

3.5 stars rounded to 4.

I enjoyed this book. As I've come to expect from Tracey Ward, the writing was so engaging, I read late into the night. The story is simple and while some may find it boring (since it definitely lacks drama), I thought it beautiful and sincere, a realistic portrait of the lives of two young adults discovering first love. Overall, it was a very sweet story and nice read.

What I liked:
1) The h has resisted the charms of the H for a long time. Given that they grew up in the same town and are now in their early 20s, that's saying a lot. She could also prevent herself from melting into a puddle around him.
2) The writing was so easy to read.
3) The development of the MCs' relationship. There wasn't any insta-love. They were honest with each other and it was so refreshing to read that in a NA story.
4) The H. He turned out to be a very nice and sweet guy.
5) No dumb drama. No exes, or ow/om, cheating, or any of that filler.
6) Some really funny banter. Definitely LOL moments.

What I didn't like:
1) I don't really understand why the H is suddenly interested in her. That fact bothered me.
2) The book needed another edit.
3) The epilogue was way too short and left too many unanswered questions. Another chapter or two before the epilogue, would have been nice too. The ending definitely felt rushed.
4) We only get the h's pov. I would have liked to hear from Lawson too. It might have cleared up some questions I had.

Lawless is an easy, fluffy, read-by-the-beach while listening to the waves kinda book. Who doesn't love a book about surfing, shark bites, piano, first loves, and California? Despite the laid-back nature of the beach bum/ surfer/ small-town lifestyle that's depicted here, the writing is anything but. It's full of description, and poetic phrases like: "...last night was love and today is goodbye..."

The only reason why I'm not giving this a whopping 5 stars is because although I enjoyed it while it lasted, I'm not sure I'm gonna ever reread this one. I'm also not sure whether the story was entirely memorable. Yes, Rachel gets bit by great white, but that's not really what the story is about. Yes, she surfs, but it's just a hobby for her; yes, she plays the piano and even got accepted to a prestigious university (one that she has practiced or waited 15 years to attend - her "dream" school), but she doesn't really go full out on that either. Her love for music wasn't really the headliner for this story.

Of course, it's about how she finds her OTL with the baddest boy in town. But it turns out, he isn't even really the bad boy she thought he was! He was really sweet, and their conversations were one of the "realest" conversations that I've had the pleasure of reading. It was sweet, witty, funny, and intriguing all at the same time. I felt like these were real people, and I was with familiar, old friends.

So, for me, that was good and bad. I always complain when a book isn't "realistic" or relatable enough; I sometimes get offended when things are so fantastical - especially the whole "love" at first sight stuff. But the thing is that when it's too "real" - or familiar, it doesn't feel as colorful, flavorful, exciting, or new. It doesn't leave a lasting impression.

The dialogue was spot on, and the MC was likable. Fear is a prevalent theme in this book, but overcoming the fear - conquering and mastering it is the bigger message, I think. Here, the story starts off by showing how scared Rachel was -- of the ocean, of her dream school, of love. She doesn't give anything up easily, although she's driven by fear to do so many times. She fights the hardest for Lawson, and the ending was really sweet. The feminist in me kind of wished for an alternate outcome with her and Lawson, but that wouldn't have been fair to the characters or the readers.

I think that generally, people who are looking for a "chill" - lazy, sweet, and easy read will enjoy this one. The writing blew me away, just not the story. It was a little too bland, with too little conflict. I did appreciate that the author didn't drag it on though - like, if she unnecessarily created conflict between Rachel and Lawson just for the sake of angst, I would've been frustrated. The characters were clean and easy - but not spicy! I wanted a bit more spice.

I first discovered Tracey Ward's books through another of my favorites Authors. Once I finished the first book in her dystopian series I knew she would be a 1-click author for me.
Lawless was such a sweet, captivating story where you could almost feel the ocean and sand between your toes. That's what Tracey's writing does, pulls you into the story that you almost forget it's not reality. Her words for me are like poetry and I envy her for the beautiful words she writes.
Law and Rachel have known of each other for pretty much their whole lives, but until a horrific event occurs never interacted. I didn't really know what the book was going to be about except that it was set in California and about a surfer. To say the story started off with a bang is an understatement. I loved the excitement and unknown of where it was heading. Some stories wait for that until the end but I really enjoyed having that at the start.
I'm a big fan of strong heroines and what I've always noticed with Tracey's books is she writes incredible ones. Rachel is in that category. Independent, witty and above all a true friend. I adored this girl so much and each chapter just kept reaffirming my love of her. She doesn't apologize for who she is and no matter what her heart is telling her, she follows her own way. Very refreshing!
Law was an amazing hero. He was mysterious and kept a lot of things to himself. Once he became smitten with Rachel, you started to see the real Law & what a guy he turned out to be. He pushed her beyond her comfort zone, and she showed him what love looks like. They were truly perfect for each other.
If you couldn't tell from this review so far, I loved this book. It was such a feel good story, that when you're done you can't help but smile *cheesy I know*

I loved it. Lawless has so many different levels to it. It's definitely a NA romance, and it's also more than that. A coming of age story, an overcoming fears story. The MC explores what a person truly wants and is actually able to achieve. Ward takes a hard look at the difference between those two things in a real way. She also makes us think about what is presented to the world, and what actually lays behind the masks. It takes work and thought to see beyond the facade.

This is no write by numbers romance, and it feels so believable. There is humour, witty dialogue. It explores becoming an adult, and heartbreak that can come with it.

As per usual in Ward's books, there are funny, strong supporting characters that I find myself cheering for, but they are written in a way that blends perfectly in the story and do not distract.

Lawless is a perfect summer read.

Well, well, well… if that didn’t that just put a smile on my face! What a nice and totally unexpected little surprise. Lawless is a sweet read perfect for the beach or when you need something a bit lighter after a dark or intense book.

The characters are wonderful and easy to connect with (especially Lawless). The story itself is great. The witty dialogue and strong writing just add to the overall enjoyment.

I was totally wrapped up in Rachel and Lawless’s story and devoured this in no time at all. I really loved it. I’m walking away from this one on a book high and a huge smile plastered to my face.

This was such a cute book! I loved everything about Lawson and Rachel!! These two were so cute and grown up. I loved how little angst there was and how they stayed true to themselves. Tried out their fears and always met right back up. It was a very easy breezy yet grown up journey to love and towards each other. So good. I will def be reading more books by this awesome author and you should too!! I recommend this book to anyone who ever wished they were a California girl waiting for their sexy surfer dude to come out and play.

Tracey Ward is a beautiful storyteller. 'Lawless' captures just the right amount of humour and romance thrown in to sweep readers away to the Californian Coast. On the surface this is a sweet, funny and heartwarming tale of two people trying to navigate the beginnings of a relationship amidst family obligations and 'real' life. But by 3% my heart was pounding, and I soon realised this was something more than "one last summer."

Rachel and Lawson have been in the same social circle since childhood but they've barely spoken three words to each other. What they think they know of the other is based on years of myths and little known facts. In the small town of Isla Azul secrets are rare, yet these two characters keep their secrets within.

"I see you Lawson Daniel, even if no one else does."

I loved the honest and natural feel to the dialogue between Lawson and Rachel and this was further reflected in their relationships with family and friends. I want to be friends with these people damn it! The beauty of this story is being able to look below the surface. To look beyond "sly smiles and broken hearts." This was about dealing with life and how we all do our best to wade through the murky depths and face life head on.

"I have to own my fear or it will own me."

Thank you Tracey Ward! You are seriously a storytelling genius and Lawson Daniel has officially earned himself a place in my heart. Fingers and toes crossed that Aaron gets his own book someday. That is a second chance romance waiting to happen!

Lawless is my favorite summer romance so far this year!

Rachel is a fun-loving beach girl through and through until she decides to pursue her music career by moving to Boston to attend a well known music school. While taking in the beach for the last time before her flight to Boston, something unimaginable happens and Rachel finds her life being saved by Lawson, the boy who everyone knows, every girl dreams about but smart girls guard their hearts around.

When this amateur surf champion sets his sights on Rachel it is for more than a hook up and he doesn't give up easy.

Being part of Rachel's summer romance is completely entertaining and watching the "playboy" fall in love is always fun. This is a perfect weekend read, not to stressful or sad and makes you feel happy with the outcome.

Another amazing read from Tracey Ward, always looking forward to more!
