Longman Dictionary of Common Errors

Rate this book
Longman Dictionary Of Common Errors is a dictionary of common errors made while writing in English, along with corrections and explanations. This book is arranged like a dictionary in alphabetical order. Using examples from Longman Learners' Corpus, a repository of English writing by English students from all over the world, the book illustrates what is wrong with the usage in each instance and how to correct it. Explanations are provided as to why usages in the original sentences are wrong. The book has over 2500 entries and 30 special language features that discuss the key problems. It also provides examples of words or phrases that might be appropriate in informal speech, but should be avoided in formal contexts. A lot of the topics also contain information cross references that help students identify the related entries. The book begins with a section that explains how to use it, how to locate a word or phrase the reader is looking for, and how the topics are arranged. Each entry in the book has a keyword that is given at the left. Two sentences are given to the right of the keyword. The first sentence shows the wrong usage of the keyword. The second one is the correct form. Below the correction is given an explanation of why the original usage was wrong. Towards the end of the book, the readers can find a list of common misspellings and also a list of irregular verbs. The glossary at the end of the book provides a list of all the grammatical terms used.J.B. Heaton is the author of books such as Beginning Composition Through Pictures, Overseas Student's Companion To English Studies, and Learning To Study In English.

This Dictionary was my God in terms of English and it helped me a lot when I learned each and every page of it for Cambridge exam in 2012. Of course it was accompanied by Destination and Skipper, advanced combined with proficiency level and many more books I don't remember. I really miss those times. :\ And without that hard, strong practice and exercise I'm starting to forget a lot of things and my speech and pronunciation also suffered a lot so now I definitely can't say that I know more than back then 'cause that's not true. So sad. :\ I miss school but not the school I had in University with coruption, cheating, bored teachers who weren't interested in anything and lectures, courses and material that will never ever be useful, just a lot of information, many of it plagiated from other foreign case studies/thesis by teachers who weren't even able to rephrase it and not copy paste it word by word and just let it like that and give it to the student to learn for exam and say to them that they are your lecture notes. (Yeah right!).
