Continuing the Read & Bloom line for newly independent readers comes a delightfully funny, boy-friendly series . . .
Meet Stinky Spike!
Ahoy! When this shipyard pup gets lost at sea, he's rescued by a crew of stinky pirates led by Captain Fishbeard. Spike must prove to the captain he can be a real pirate. Luckily, Stinky Spike has the best nose on the seven seas, and he uses it to sniff out all kinds of treasure. But what happens when Spike's sense of smell leads him to some very strange loot?
What happens when a shipyard dog gets washed out to sea. When Spike is rescued by pirates after a couple of days floating around in a bucket full of garbage, he smells terrible. To earn his keep on the pirate ship he tells them he can sniff out treasure. What happens when Spike sniffs out everything but treasure. Sail away with Spike and Captain Fishbeard on this fun adventure. This is another great entry into the early chapter books, this one probably geared towards boys, especially reluctant readers. They will love some of the disgusting smells that Stinky Spike comes across. The illustrations are wonderful. They fit the story perfectly and again are just gross enough for little boys to love them. I recommend this book to public, school and class libraries. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.
What a fun elementary age read! I loved the color pages and can't wait to see the finished art work. Stinky Spike is brave and adorable. I'll be keeping my eye out for more Stinky Spike books in the future.
Sailing the high seas has never been more fun than with Stinky Spike the Pirate Dog by Peter Meisel. Stinky Spike is an easy chapter book written in easy-to-read sentences that keep the action moving and excitement high for little readers.
Spike does not begin his life as a Pirate Dog, nor is he always “Stinky Spike.” Instead, Spike is a shipyard dog with a “super sniffer.” He has the world’s most powerful nose. Spike loves the nastiest, ickiest, foulest stinks he can sniff.
One morning, Spike slips on a patch of seaweed and lands in the ocean. The waves pull Spike out to sea. Spike spots a bucket and crawls in among the rotten fish bits and barnacles. He is eventually rescued by pirates. They name him Stinky Spike—he is no longer known for his powerful nose, but for the noxious smell from the bucket, which clings to his fur.
Spike makes a deal with the pirate captain: he will help them find treasure in exchange for a ride home. With this agreement, Spike’s pirate adventures begin. He must prove himself and the power of his nose to the pirates.
Peter Meisel has also written a sequel to Stinky Spike the Pirate Dog, named Stinky Spike and the Royal Rescue. I received an advance reader copy of Stinky Spike the Pirate Dog in exchange for my unbiased review of the book. We will be getting a copy of the sequel because my kids are enchanted by Stinky Spike!
Spike, who has a magnificent “super sniffer” of nose, is a dog who loves his work on the docks. While working hard to protect cargo from gulls and rats, he also revels in the stinky smells that surround him. One day as he is unloading a ship he slips and lands in the water. His only hope to be rescued may just be joining the Pirates to become Stinky Spike, The Pirate Dog!
This illustrated beginning chapter book has kid appeal for early elementary readers all over it. The “Stinky” premise, full color illustrations by Paul Meisel that extend the humor of Spike’s predicaments, and humorous text make it a fun read. Stinky Spike’s adventures continue in the next book Stinky Spike and the Royal Rescue and young fans will be asking for more. The review copy sent from the publisher offers a nice full color hardback at a reasonable $9.99 price point and they offer an e version as well. Librarians and educators should also know this title is one of Bloomsbury’s Read and Bloom series which offers other titles both of the sweet and funny varieties. I would recommend this book for purchase by any school or public library.
This book was provided by the publisher for professional review by SWON Libraries.
Spike has the best sniffer in the seven seas and it takes him all the way from the dock yard to a real treasure hunting pirate ship. In order to get home he agrees to help Captain Fishbeard and his crew find treasure. While they don’t always agree on what counts as treasure many interesting and smelly things are found.
I absolutely adored this book. It is a fun little chapter book with detailed full color illustrations. The characters are wonderfully written and have the best names. It kept me laughing and I am sure it will keep kids who are just starting to transition from picture books to chapter book entertained as well.
On a side note, I think I have met Stinky Spike when I lived on a sailboat for a year. He was sweet, loved to sniff things, was very good at scaring birds away from the boats, and was of course smelly.
Note: The publisher gave me this book to review. In no way did that affect my opinions.
I received an ARC of this story at the ALA Midwinter Conference. When I go, I am always on the lookout for good early reader chapter books. Stinky Spike fits the bill. The story includes, dogs, pirates, stinky smells, and treasure: what's not to love? Young readers will enjoy reading this series, but it also works for those slightly older reluctant readers. Looking forward to more Stinky Spike adventures!
I read this one with my 4 year old son and we read it all in one sitting. I'm always on the hunt for short chapter books with lots of pictures so I was excited to discover the Bloomsbury Read and Bloom Line. Since my son loves pirates, we obviously had to start with this series. The length was perfect and there were full color pictures on every pages that kept my son engaged. It was a simple, silly story that my son enjoyed and he learned a little bit of new sea vocabulary as well.
Fun rollicking adventure on the high seas with Stinky Spike, the Pirate Dog, and his band of merry cohorts. Great colour illustrations and easier text are sure to be a hit with emerging readers who are ready for the next step after easy reader titles.
Cute chapter book for kids just getting into longer books. About a dog who can sniff out treasure, who aligns himself with a group of pirates. Lovely full-color illustrations. * I read an ARC which also included the second book in this series, Stinky Spike and the Royal Rescue.
Our first grader (7YO) loves this book. It was one that he could read without any assistance. He laughed, smiled and is already looking forward to the next one in the series.
