4.5 stars. Loved this installment of the Dragon Kings, even though it wasn't as physically eventful as some of the others have been. Ryder has been in love with Kinsey for a few years but left her to protect both her and her family. Someone has made it so she returns to his life and she and Ryder aim to find out why. Meanwhile, Rhi has taken her relationship to another level with someone other than the King that broke her heart (It's still driving me nuts that we don't know who it is though I have strong suspicions). Con's secret looks to be about to come to light (hahaha pun intended) The main plot seems to be moving closer and closer to a resolution and the anticipation is killing me. This series and that of the reapers has gotten under my skin and I can't wait to read the rest.

They should have trusted their love.

What a bunch of knuckleheads. In Smoke and Fire we have Kinsey and Ryder who both know deep down they’re meant to be together, but didn’t trust their love. Don’t really blame Kinsey to be honest. Ryder is a douche waffle who doubted his love and paid for it BIG TIME. It is obvious to me that men, doesn’t matter their age, fight the lovebug. In this case, Ryder is in love with Kinsey but is afraid of committing to her because a mortal, thousands of years ago betrayed one of his fellow Dragon Kings. Wow, talk about jumping to conclusions. Well, maybe it wasn’t that. It could have been because there was a spell cast that said that all the Dragon Kings wouldn’t be able to fall in love??? Hello!! You devastated yourself and her by separating for THREE YEARS!! Jeez Louise…I wish they had a few female dragons in their midst to slap them on their heads and tell them to wake up to themselves.

Well…that was the story in a nutshell. Sort of, not really. We meet Kinsey who has been living in a bit of a fog since her boyfriend, love of her life, left her three years ago. Then, she has a really bad day where Edinburgh is under attack by weird guys with red eyes…and some DRAGON changes to her ex-boyfriend and saves her life. WOW!! I’m thinking her screaming and running away was a pretty normal reaction and I can’t believe anyone expected her to act differently. ESPECIALLY, considering the love of her life forgot to mention he wore scales part-time. A few nightmares later…and a new assignment from her employer sees her trying to get back to normal. Bah…bow. No chance of normal when the door slides back and who should be waiting?

Ryder can’t believe Kinsey is in front of him. He never stopped loving her and regrets all of the mistakes he made in pushing her away. Unfortunately, he’s still not trusting that cupid’s arrow that is firmly lodged in his heart. Between him and his fellow dragons, they’re all very, very suspicious of her and her appearance. Best to find her guilty, and she can prove her innocence. KNUCKLEHEAD!!!

It probably doesn’t seem like it, but I actually really enjoyed this story. Yes at times I was frustrated, but the majority of the characters we deal with in Smoke and Fire are male, so not really surprising. There was intrigue, passion and a storyline that kept me riveted from beginning to end. We get different points of view throughout the story, and not just from the main characters. We see into the baddies and the goodies minds. Most of the dragons are goodies, with only a couple who are on a path of revenge. We also get to meet some of the Dark and Light Fae. The dark ones are bad and the light are mostly good.

The most frustrating character through the whole story is the King of the Dragon Kings, Constantine. I do not like him at all, but I think he’s being portrayed as a baddie, but MAYBE there might be some good in him. I won’t write him off fully…YET.

This is the first story I’ve read by Donna Grant and considering this is #9 in the series, I think I’m going to have a lot of catching up to do. I really enjoyed Smoke and Fire and while I know it probably would have been easier to follow if I’d read it in order, I still managed to be thoroughly enthralled.

I received a complimentary copy of Smoke and Fire via Netgalley for an honest review.

Ryder and Kinsey were together before Ulrik got his magic back and the Dragon Kings could fall in love, so Ryder walked away. Now three years later their back together just as hot as before, but who orchestrated it? Curious minds want to know.

Rhi, Rhi, Rhi why? just why?
And V...still not liking him. I really hope he's not Rhi's mystery Dragon King.

I received an eARC, from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.
This Smoke and Fire book has all the Smoke and Fire Part 1-4 included in this one. There is still a cliffhanger in it to lead us in the the next book. Also Smoke and Fire has several characters from previous series by Donna Grant. I have read the Reaper series and was able to catch up with what they are doing now. But I haven't yet read the other series so this really can be a standalone book.
This is the story of Ryder and Kinsey. We find that three years ago Ryder was in a year long relationship with Kinsey but up and left with just a note for her to find. Kinsey didn't understand why Ryder left and she had taken his leaving very hard.
Kinsey is headed to a new assignment for work that ends up taking her in contact with Ryder again. A few weeks before this meeting we find that Ryder was help to battle the Dark ones in her town and Kinsey saw Ryder come out of his dragon form when trying to save her. Kinsey didn't speak to him as she was so shocked that she ran from him. Now in the present day Kinsey and Ryder are working together to try to find out who sent Kinsey to them and why. Everyone things someone is controlling the situation. Ryder and Kinsey work to prove her innocent of any wrong doing. Kinsey is trying to fight her feelings for Ryder as she has sworn never to fall for him again. Ryder is doing the opposite, Ryder realizes that he made a mistake three years ago and now is trying to get back with Kinsey.

In the ninth book of the Dark Kings series, Donna Grant takes an unwilling and scared heroine in Kinsey and thrusts her back into the dragon world. Years before in Glasgow, Ryder and Kinsey were once lovers. But when the Dark Fae targeted Kinsey, Ryder had no choice but to change in front of Kinsey to protect her. Since then, Kinsey has stayed far, far away from Ryder, fearing for her life.

But when a work order forces Kinsey to enter Ryder’s domain, she is once again hit with her feelings for him. Feelings that, in reality, have never truly gone away. Despite being scared for her safety, she is learning that her presence here isn’t the only thing that she needs to worry about. Someone wants Kinsey to be with Ryder again but they do not know who. Until they can figure that out, both Kinsey and Ryder must learn to deal with one another. Or risk falling more apart.

Donna Grant makes coming back into this world very easy. I think that even if you haven’t read the previous books in the series, you can still find a comfortable place here. Each book has a solid romance but as I mentioned earlier, things are a little bit strained between Ryder and Kinsey. Kinsey is hurt that Ryder kept all these secrets from her. Furthermore, she doesn’t really know what to do with all this information. How does one live with a dragon? For her entire life, she had no idea dragons existed until she realizes she is in love with one!

The dynamic between Ryder and Kinsey is very sweet. It’s almost like watching them fall in love again for the first time. The initial anxiety is there and the both of them are very unsure of what to do in this situation but I loved that both of them are willing to try!

As always, Grant incorporates several of the other Dark Kings into this story. Con is present, which makes me happy because he seems to be my favorite. There is some mention of the Reapers, which is Grant’s other series but I just think that they something extra if you follow both series like me.

SMOKE AND FIRE is another explosive installment to the Dark Kings series. If you’re a fan of dragons and accents, then what are you waiting for? Pick this series up!

Four years ago Kinsey met the man of her dreams in Ryder. For the better part of a year they enjoyed everything that a couple who was falling in love should enjoy. Everything felt right. Ryder knew things were different. He knew that for more years than any mortal can fathom that magic was in place to prevent him from feeling the things he felt towards Kinsey. In an effort to protect Kinsey from Con’s wrath at finding out one of his Kings fell in love Ryder left her in Glasgow and returned to Dreagan. Now three years later Kinsey has arrived at the front door of Dreagan with work orders that no one within requested.

Smoke and Fire has a different kind of romance than the other books in Donna Grant’s Dragon King books. Ryder and Kinsey are a rekindle. The love is most certainly still there. Kinsey just has to gain a trust that was broken when some big secrets were never shared. It hurts to know that your lover would rather disappear without a trace than to share his most kept secret. Ryder has got his work cut out for him. He has to earn Kinsley’s trust while digging into her life to prove that she is not a spy who has gained access to Dreagan for nefarious purposes. This is no easy feat.

I feel comfortable at this point in stating that Rhi is my most favorite character in this series. She is in the middle of everything. She’s a Light Fae who has the amorous attentions of a very sexy Dark Fae. Many of the Dragon Kings see her as a sister and loyal friend. Death has an eye on her via the Reaper Daire. She adds so much to this series. I truly hope she gets her own book, and soon.

I really need something big to happen. We’re nine books into the Dark Kings and it’s beginning to get a little repetitious. The Dragon meets his girl. They fall in love. Con gets in a twist over another of his Kings falling in love. Ulrik is blamed for something. And then we get a happily ever after. I want to read some more battle and conflict. I’m getting a lot of plotting and scheming. It all leads to this war that the Dark Kings are preventing but it feels like there is something missing that could make this so much more.

Oh Ryder and Kinsey! How fun was this read. You see, this is second chance romance tucked inside this amazing paranormal series. They had got together before this series even started but when Ryder realized, oh wait, I can't tell you THAT. Three years have passed and their mutual talent with computers brings them back into the same room. What fun!

Who can resist a good second chance romance? Certainly not me! I loved how they worked through the issues and rediscovered a passion that can't be ignored. Loved it! Truly I did. And Ryder, the lover of jelly donuts, found something he needs more. Hehe.

The writing is still great with characters that I love. I sometimes want to slap a few of them and I really really want more details about a certain king of kings but I can't wait to read the next one. I need more and more. Mostly, I need to know how the enemies will fight it out. It's a puzzle that changes as more details are revealed and I really want to see the full picture. Soon. I hope.

I'm reading on with this one and if you haven't found time to add it to your reading, you so should.

Review Parts 1 to 3

Kinsey and Ryder were lovers but after he left her she never heard about him and was left with a broken heart. But she was mislead to Dreagan and she knows that he is a dragon due the past events.

I find this part a lot more elaborate than the book 7. There is a lot of information and the reappearance of the Reapers. Rhi is now with Balladyn and Ulrik have now his powers and visiting old friends what he planning is no good. There is actually a lot of misreading and everyone wants to defeat each other its definitely leads chaos. Henry's sister is been fooling by the Dark and actually I am still trying to understand her plot.

I like Kinsey and her fear to dragons like any sane person would have and she gain points with me about what i said before. This revenge and the war about of the throne will kill everyone. Ryder was a cute and geek guy was good see that he will not give up on her. Their relationship was cool.

description

Please, a story to Henry seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the guy but his blindness towards Rhi make me sick an when he said that they were perfect.
And the ways Rhi treats him. Man-UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

description

Constantine aka Con yummi......... misterious guy the Kings of kings. I have a lot of theories but I really think that he is Rhi's ex lover.

Balladyn poor baby, I like the guy too but I don't see he doing ok in the future.

Rhi I hate and sometimes dislike her. All this fuss towards are getting old and every man wants to bang her because she blah blah blah blah. She has to pick side in a war you can't save both.

Is it driving everyone crazy to not know what King is Rhi(idk if thats how you spell her name)? I think I'm going to go mad if I don't find out soon. I keep guessing but then my mind changes. It's frustrating and it takes up a lot of my mind when reading these books. It takes away from the story and pisses me off.

The book was good. Thats my review. I'm too tired and too pregnant to think today.

Dragons, dragons and more dragons! They are taking over the world!

Sure I'm missing aspects of the story because of skipping to book 9 of the Dark Kings series, but thanks to Smoke and Fire I'm willing to start reading from book one. I'm lucky that the book makes sense , I'm unfamiliar with the other characters , besides Kinsey and Ryder.Even so it can be read as a stand alone...sort of.

Ryder is a tech dragon who is fighting to protect his fellow dragons from human eyes. He doesn't want to harm humans. He wants to coexist. In fact, dragons did their best for humans to feel comfortable , until human race turned against dragons , hunting them. So Ryder and his kind need to remain hidden. Dreagan is their sacred territory and the Dragon Kings try to keep humans away.
Ryder felt inlove with a mortal , with Kinsey. But one night he left her without a word and he never came back . Then one night Kinsey saw Ryder's true form and she run away from him. Heartbroken and disappointed Kinsey tried to move on, little did she knew that all this time Ryder never stopped watching over her from the shadows.

Three years after Kinsey is mislead to Dreagan and now she comes face to face with Ryder. She continues to be bitter and can't get over the fact that Ryder lied to her about his true form and she can't understand his reasons. Ryder is heartbroken that Kinsey fears him.

I'm gonna stop here with this review and I'm not gonna write about the other characters. At this point I feel that my review doesn't make justice for this book. As I said, it is best to read the previous 8 books to understand better. I'm gonna start doing that myself and then re-read Smoke and Fire . As a first read I'm rating it 4 stars ,bu there are chances to edit it to 5 stars after I'm done. This review will also be updated.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy:

(This review is for part 1/4)
I am not sure why SMOKE AND FIRE is being released in four parts; this first part is 100% information dump. All it did was briefly introduce the main characters and catch up readers on the last 8 books worth of mythology and action - and not very well, either.

Between having previous couples literally run through the scenes on their way somewhere just to name-drop, and trying to sum up thousands of years of strife, betrayal and war in under 80 pages, all this first part did was leave me asking myself what the heck had happened.

Kinsey and Riley are both "computer geeks" but in name only; neither of them showed any geekiness or even any obvious technical skills other than furiously typing and undescriptive "hacking". They could have had any other job or characteristic without really impacting the story. Neither had much of a personality. This story also relies heavily on the characters having misunderstandings about why they left each other and serious trust issues, but instead being interesting, it just made me want to shake them and make them talk to each other instead of staring into each other's eyes and having disagreements.

I can think of excellent serial paranormal romance novels and serial stories, where each part has a beginning, middle and end, while still contributing to the overall story. This just feels like the tedious front part of a novel that has been ripped off the of the paperback. I have no interest in reading the rest of the novel, as the main characters didn't interest me, and I can't remember the (overly complicated) names of the dozen other characters introduced.

When will it be the ultimatum in the series?

I seriously don't know how to review this book because it's pretty much the same thing with previous books. You won't get any clear answer. You still stuck in the mystery. Minor obstacles included before major stuff just to create this story.

*deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep sigh* I. AM. OFFICIALLY. BORED.

In previous books, I enjoyed reading them Rhi, Balladyn, Ulrik, and Con more than I read the main characters. Unfortunately this time, I didn't enjoy single bit of them all. I found them flat and dull. Nothing interesting, not up until the climatic part. Even that too, didn't give so much impact on me.

Alas, regardless of the aforementioned, I really like the heroine. She's realistic. I also liked anything with second chance love story in this case - Ryder and Kinsey. Call me sadistic, I like Kinsey stayed coldhearted (up until a few last chapters) because I totally understand her situation and Ryder totally deserves it for being stupid.

I hope something different in next book or it'll be another torturous read needs to be endured.

Main characters: Ryder (computer geek / immortal / Dragon King of Greys) + Kinsey (computer geek / human)

This wasn't a favorite in the series for me. I wasn't really invested in the romance and found myself skimming through quite a bit of pages. Lots of rehashing of things I already know because I've been reading the series from book one. As usual I loved all the scenes with Rhi and Balladyn and I'm still invested in the outcome of the impending war.
Each book continuously offers us the same exact formula:
Dragon King says he'll never marry... Dragon King meets woman that changes his mind... insert woman finding out who and what he is and we have to listen to another king explaining to another woman their history and where they came from...
It was all romantic and fun for the first few books but now it's just getting in the way of the development of the overall plot. My hope is that the next few books in the series will finally draw us to an action-filled epic conclusion.
I'm still in this until the end... I'm invested in the characters and the story and I need closure for a few of my favorite characters. So, we'll see how it goes with the next installment.

I don't know what possessed me to pick this book to read... it IS clearly stated at #9 in a series. Normally I am the reader that has to start at the first book then work my way through the entire series in order, but something about this cover or the title or just the blurb made me jump right in. (and I am not much of a paranormal reader either so all around I am shocked and please with this choice..)

I'm going to be honest.. it wasn't super easy to keep all the names straight at first but then I was drawn into the story and all was good. Donna Grant does a great job of letting the reader know what is going on with out giving loads of backstory (retelling previous books). I knew enough to enjoy this book and I learned that Donna Grant is an author I need to read more of... Not only did I fall in love with Ryder, I am fascinated with this world of dragons and Fae... and Reapers! I can't wait to see who the next book is about (Rhi is a fascinating character I need more of) but I NEED to go back and know about all these Dragon Kings. Well done, Donna Grant, well done. I am a fan :)

This novel is #9 in the series, "Dark Kings" by author; Donna Grant. I loved this addition to the series! One, the main male character, who is also the HOT Scottish alpha male that is able to shift into his natural form as a Dragon has actually been in all the novels so far as the computer mastermind so this is his story and man, what a story! The reader gets a feeling of the passion and the pain AND the plot twists from the previous novels JUST keep adding! This novel didn't have all the action like the previous novels but that's ok because there sure was plenty of romance, heartbreak, laughter and healing in this one. I love this entire series and all the characters, settings and stories so if you are in a book rut then this series and author is definitely worth a try. You won't be disappointed!

Ryder and Kinsey are thrust back together and given a second chance. They were lovers three years ago but Ryder cut ties and left. Now that they are back together they can’t hide their feelings but struggle to overcome past hurt. I really enjoyed their relationship and the hardships they faced. While not as extreme as some of the other couples this one was still intense and emotional because of the
circumstances.

New enemies. Betrayal. Brainwashing. Love. So much happens in this book and most of its is emotional. This book wasn’t one of the high action, big scene ones. This mostly consisted of Ryder and Kinsey working together on the computers to locate their enemies. Major things also happened with Con, Rhi, and Ulrik.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

There must be something about Donna Grant's dark kings that make them very appealing. I mean, we're now down to the ninth book, and everything about the general series arc and the different stories in each book are still hooking readers in. I have to say that I haven't read all the dark kings books, but those I've read, I did enjoy. It must be the dragon shapeshifters who are alpha males, and all the other strong and brave heroes and heroines that she created for this series.

Smoke And Fire really got my attention from the first page to the very last. Because I haven't really followed each and every book, I felt like there were some names and terminologies that confused me. But, all in all, I enjoyed the book for what it was- an entertaining paranormal romance with a very contemporary setting and very real heroine. I really liked Kinsey, although I couldn't understand her sometimes. I guess there really is just a certain pull that these dragon shapeshifters have because this inexplainable connection between the main characters is always present.

I can't wait to see what else is in store for this series. In the meantime, I might actually have to go back and re-read the entire series because I do want to read about every hero and heroine that this series introduced.

I am once again in love with Donna Grant's characters. Kinsey and Ryder were smoking and combustible just like a fire, the title is very accurate for this couple. Ryder made a choice in order to save Kinsey and that choice left them apart. Kinsey was sent by her company to Ryder (not knowing Ryder would be at her assignment) and things begin to heat up again as the two try to clear Kinsey from being a threat to Ryder and the other Kings. I loved watching these two come back together and enjoyed getting to see some of the other kings from books prior to this one.

I have a hate/love relationship with this series. I love that we get a glimpse of all the kings and their stories, all the intrigues and games that everyone is playing but I hate that the books end and I still don't know what Ulrik's end game is. We all know he wants revenge but I NEED to know if he gets his HEA. Under all his anger, bitterness, etc, I think he is redeemable and he needs his happy ever after. Everyone is getting theirs why not him and Con? I just need his story to be done.
