USA Today Best Selling author and Winner of the 2019 Romance Through the Ages Award for Georgian/Regency Romance, Chasity Bowlin is the author multiple bestselling historical romance novels, both independently and with Dragonblade Publishing. She lives in central Kentucky with her husband and their menagerie of animals. She loves writing, loves traveling and enjoys incorporating tidbits of her actual vacations into her books. She is an avid Anglophile, loving all things British, but specifically all things Regency.
Growing up in Tennessee, spending as much time as possible with her doting grandparents, soap operas were a part of her daily existence, followed by back to back episodes of Scooby Doo. Her path to becoming a romance novelist was set when, rather than simply have her Barbie dolls cruise around in a pink convertible, they time traveled, hosted lavish dinner parties and one even had an evil twin locked in the attic.
- I love this series, and I was glad this book did not disappoint. - Larissa & Spencer were adorable together. - It was a little high on mystery and low on romance, but their attraction has already been brewing in the previous books, so no complaints. - For a dark plot, there were many sweet, tender and lighthearted moments, and I loved it. Significantly lower steam content, understandable considering Larissa's backstory.
Spencer and Larissa, are two characters that just HAVE IT. That little something special all romance writers try to reproduce with every couple under their pens (or on their computers). The book started with such promises. I was so excited when I started reading this book. I thought oh my this is going to be one great read. Spencer and Larissa. Unrequited love, longing, you name it, they have got it.
Spencer saved Larissa from a horrible fate, albeit a tad too late, but save her he did. And they have harbored tender feelings for each other for the years following that tragic event. But they circled each other without ever professing their feelings until one day Larissa couldn't hold it back anymore. She asked Spencer: why? why do you avoid me like the plague? Have I offended you somehow?
And Spencer answered her with a poem from Thomas Moore: They Know Not My Heart.
Now, can this book be any more promising?? I was IN LOVE with Spencer myself.
Then Spencer left for Scotland and never to be heard from until one day Larissa intercepted a letter from Spencer, addressed to Larissa's brother in law Rhys. Larissa decided to go to Scotland to help Spencer because Spencer sounded crazy in his letter. She believed Spencer needed her help. Now up until this moment I awaited impatiently for their reunion. What happens now? How will they overcome their fears and obstacles? My heart was in my throat!
Then we meet the crazed Spencer. Then the book was over. OVER.
I don't know what happened. The way the writer went about Spencer's crazed state, his household, his relatives, and how Larissa went about "helping" Spencer. Spencer and Larissa lost all of their chemistry. I don't know what happened. What happened?? I asked myself. The mystery took over, and romance went in hiding and never to be found again. We are led on the chase of "who is poisoning Spencer?" and are forced to witness Larissa and Spencer's old spinster cousin contesting for the honor of "who is the lady of the manor?" I want my Spencer and Larissa back!
So there it is, my epic love story destroyed by curses, mystery, scheming spinster and butler.
Six months ago, he left his friend's house in the middle of the night to escape the hurt of rejection by the woman he's loved for years, but can never have. Now, oblivion seems just around the corner. Darkness beckons. No more pain of unrequited love, no more heartache, for the new Earl of Kinraven is slowly going insane.
But Spencer has a guardian angel that's traveled all the way from England, because she knows something's wrong. A woman that's returned his feelings for years, yet never dared tell him. But as Larissa joins him in the dark and foreboding castle in the Scottish Highlands, she soon realizes there might be some truth to the curse that's destroyed every Kinraven heir so far.
But behind every curse, there's a person that utters it...Keeps it alive.
This is what "saving the best for last" means.
A chilling, thrilling, and slightly scary story with eerily vivid narrative and descriptions, great cast (I knew Spencer would be a good hero, Larissa was simply perfect, but I utterly adored Dorcas), wonderful suspense with that all important (and missing in the previous book) red herring that keeps you guessing and leaves you with your mouth agape when the truth is revealed, just the right amount of paranormal to keep it interesting, and just the right pacing. Balanced, I'd call it.
Snowed in at a secluded, gloomy, possibly haunted castle
The hero may or may not be going mad thanks to a curse
The heroine doing her best to figure out what is going on in order to save him while continuing to come to grips with traumatic events from her past
Scheming relatives
Witches
Two people overcoming everything together to find love
And Dorcas who was the literal best
All of this is right in my literary wheelhouse, so there was no way I wasn't going to like it. And like it, I did. Quite a lot...but just not quite as much as I liked the first two in the series. Though, I am happy to say that the things that I loved about the first two books-- the author writing against trope, ie. no 'Big Misunderstanding' or no 'TSTL moments from the heroine' and so on--are also present in this book. Also, I noticed a lot more typos/grammatical errors in this one, and they tended to pull me out of the story at times.
A dark romance between Spencer, who was portrayed as everything perfect in the first two books but who is being driven mad, and Larissa, a very broken young lady who comes to rescue him. All kinds of twists and turns kept me reading 'til the ultimate conclusion.
I love these stories. The suspenseful and mysterious world the author draws us into is outstanding. The love story we find in the mist is the icing on the cake
This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:
It's another book in the Dark Regency series and again I loved it. The series brilliantly weaves the elements of the occult, of magic, of the otherwordly into tales of passionate true love:)
It's book three, and it's the tale of the third gentleman from a small group of friends we got to know in book one - Spencer, the one who is always proper, who always follows the rules, for whom propriety seems to be everything... But Spencer has a secret - he's been in love with Larissa for years but he's never acted and he believes he will never act on his feelings... Especially now, when he is slowly falling into insanity... but what if Larissa is the only person who can help him?
It's again a powerful starting point for a romance that is also a brilliantly woven crime story, with the elements of magic and the occult adding to the overall Gothic feel of the tale. All we want from such stories is there: a secluded dilapidated castle somewhere on the Scottish moors, a strange ominous housekeeper walking up and down the halls, with warnings of a family curse spilling from her lips constantly, there's also a lord on the brink of madness and a girl who loves him and will do anything to save him, even if it is to cost her dearly... Add to it a really fast pace of the plot, characters that are memorable and complex, and you'll have a book you won't be able to put down until you finish. I know I couldn't:)
As with all the previous books in the series, the only fault I can find when it comes to narration is the pace of Ms Yves's reading - I'd like it to be a bit faster (but that's just me; I think most people will find it just about right). Other than that, I really like her interpretation of the books: she does the voices really well, they do match the personalities of the characters, and she's very good at actually bringing the stifling ominous Gothic feel of the books to life:) A job really well done:)
DISCLAIMER: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Can I be a little petty? Good, thanks. Could someone please tell me why an author wouldn't go back and look at how they spelled a person's name in the first book, just to check? Because that bugged me -- more than it should have, granted -- but it really bugged me. The stepfather's last name was Stidham in the first book, and then it's Stydham in the third! Come on!
Ok, now that I've had my little temper tantrum...
I was surprised at how the author chose to break Spencer down in this book. There were plenty of ways that he'd have to leave some of his pomposity and propriety behind, but making him goofy on wacky-weed or 'shrooms seemed a little simplistic.
That said, I did like seeing how Larissa had to come out of her turtle shell to take back her life; I especially liked it when Spencer confronted her about it. And their smoldering, prolonged infatuation was definitely more than ready for a match to be set to it.
Perhaps it's because I've been reading these one after the other, so my senses are getting little blunted and tired, but sometimes it feels like every single gothic oddity has been squeezed into the books. And this was more hit-you-over-the-head-with-it than the previous two. I long for the days of yore, when Tattersall wound the gothic atmosphere around the characters, and then let the reader's imagination consider, "Is it really?" "Are they really --?"
In the end, I enjoyed it, but not as much as the prior two. I'll see how the next one leaves me feeling, as it involves characters not introduced thus far.
I liked this one, and was eager to see these characters together. I think I may have needed a bit of a palate cleanse after the first two because this one just didn't take me on quite the same ride as the first two did. I wanted more from the MCs and more from the story. I was expecting more background on both of them, and the story, well, it was pretty much the same - it could have used a little spice. I mean, it was a good plot and interesting settings but after the first two it felt a tad cookie cutter. But then again, if it ain't broke, why fix it? Even though I wanted more from Spencer and Larissa, I would still recommend this book. It's an interesting world that Chasity has created and I did read book four before doing any reviews, this was just not my favorite from this set of characters.
The Enticement of an Earl (Dark Regency #3) was a great read by Chasity Bowlin. Spencer, Lord Wolverston and the Earl of Kinraven have found peace in Scotland. The new found peace comes crashing down around him when the woman he desires but cannot have, shows up on his doorstep. She is injured from a carriage accident. Miss Larissa Walters fled London, seeking out Lord Wolverston. She’s hoping that Spencer can save her again when old threats return. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.
I really can't get enough of this series. I've become so engrossed with these characters that I think of them in between reading and think of them as part of friends. They are so.devoted to each other and face the obstacles thrown at them together no matter what. As with the first two books in this series, there is mystery, suspense, lust, love and more drama than one can bargain for. Awesome series!
I was glad Larissa and Spencer FINALLY got their story and love match! Larissa has been through hell and back with what's happened to her in the past. Spencer fell in love with her but had to wait for her to grow up and deal with what happened in her own way. This time she's the one who saves him. Her gift and quick thinking stole the show!
Chasity Bowlin has sucked me in to her dark regency series. I have read the first three books in three days and I have already purchased the rest of the books in this series. Each book kept me on the edge of my seat to the very end. I would recommend these books to everyone.
Larissa and Spencer have loved each other for years but did not act on their feelings. When Larissa comes to Spencer's aid she finds him in a bad way and bizarre things happening in the mansion. She has to be diligent to figure the mysteries of the place. Lillian Yves is outstanding as narrator for this book.
It's a great story line Continued, from the other 2 serious. And very gothic, and mysterious.with witches, spells ,and a great luv story, with a happiy everafter. Thank you!👍
This a quite terrific Gothic Regency Romance and I enjoyed reading it quite a lot, and I think that you will enjoy it just like me. It is nicely spicy and it has a very nice HEA.
I read the other two books, in the Dark Regency Series, and knew the third book would be just as enjoyable. If you like hot romance with a little paranormal thrown in, and a Regency flair this series is meant for you!
I really loved this book and this entire series. I loved that it wasn’t your typical historical romance but had a paranormal aspect to it. And lots of suspense. I would definitely read more by this author.
I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first two. The real romance didn’t really progress until 3/4 of the way through the book and there were some strange plot holes and annoying circumstances- like leaving the heroine alone in the house when you know it’s dangerous to do so.
I loved the chemistry between them but this cannot be judged as a stand-alone because I feel like most of the pining and longing comes from the remnants of the books prior to this one in the series. There were also a couple of inconsistencies and if I could I’d rate this book a 3 and a half stars
