*warning - long rambling review about faith, miracles, and suffering*

FATIMA: IN LUCIA'S OWN WORDS is a bit out of my normal reading habits. I prefer fantasy and science fiction as well as books on physics. However, my father passed last year and I was in a very morbid mood where I wanted to seek some form of comfort to deal with his loss as well as all the people I've also lost.

For the most part, the sources I turned to didn't help with the situation but made it progressively worse. I'm a religious person by nature but also a scientist and those are never entirely an apt fit because one is based on belief and skepiticsm. Ignore the issue of everything else (you could make a religion out of the perfection of mathematics for example) but that's the real reason they'll never have entirely comfortable roles.

One element which argues for the existence of god is the argument from miracles. Which is, simply put, we know God exists because there are miraculous events spread throughout the world. Many chronicled and tied to Christianity as well as tested by the Catholic Church. Some have been disproven like the Shroud of Turin (weird as it may be) while others are far more inexplicable like the healing of Sister Marie Simon Pierre of Parkisons' disease or the overnight healing of Gilson Varghese's club foot.

Richard Dawkin's famously put down the Lourdes miracle by pointing out only 67 miracles had occurred there despite millions of pilgrims, ignoring the 67 miracles had to be instantaneous, untreated, lasting, and complete versus many more who suffered other forms of relief. More like 7,000 miracles have been set up for investigation and millions more lesser effects have been claimed, even if they could put under the placebo.

The Fatima miracles are among the more famous of miracles with three Portuguese shepherd children receiving multiple visits from the Virgin Mary and an unnamed angel. They were told of the end of World War 1, the beginning of World War 2, the rise of communism in Russia, and (at least according to one interpretation) the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II. 70,000 witnesses saw the dancing of the sun as the final manifestation of their encounter. Much of Europe was also illuminated by another of their predictions (seemingly?) coming to pass.

Two of the children, Fransisco and Jacinta, would go on to die horrible deaths at a young age during the Spanish Flu epidemic. Lucia Marto, however, became a nun and lived until 2005. This amusingly led to the Catholic Church going to her several times whenever the Fatima Prophecies were interpreted by the public or in a controversial way such as when the Eastern Orthodox Church talked about them a secret plot to convert Russia to Catholicism--which she denied at the time. Lucia, before she died, was asked to put her experience to pen and talk about the events which would follow.

This is a hard book to review because it is about some fairly bleak subject matter. The children were arrested by the Portuguese government and were threatened numerous times with being killed, including by two soldiers who debated shooting them and dumping them in a ditch to stop their disruption to the state (in front of them no less). The children are disbelieved by and embarrass their parents. They also receive a vision of hell and are told of the importance of suffering as well as sacrifice to achieve the redemption of the world. Lucia, the group's sole survivor, spends most of her life not speaking and practicing her unworthiness before God.

This is not the squishy feel good bubblegum fiction interpretation of God you can buy in the grocery store. Perhaps that makes it more honest. It's also weirdly disconcerting as despite her horrific experiences, Sister Lucia is incredibly upbeat. The misery described by her letters reaches Lemony Snickett levels but she never shows anything but gratefulness as well as happiness for the chance to suffer for the Lord.

Why do I give the book a 4 instead of a 5? It's something of a odd duck because while the opening of the work explains the Fatima prophecies, it doesn't quite give us much context to Lucia's situation or the environment. It's mostly her reminiscences on the miracles, her lost family, and what followed. The narrative is a bit disjointed as this is an almost hundred year old woman reflecting on events versus a professional writer or researcher. She also points out she's never been a prophetess and can only relate what she heard and experienced.

Did the book restore my faith? Not really but it did remind me I perhaps never lost it. One could easily interpret Sister Lucia's story in the context of children with overactive imaginations and some mass hysteria/suggestion with some lucky coincidences. I choose not to, however. I also do take comfort from this book that Sister Lucia's love and faith came from a place which was deeply tested and happy in the face of misery rather than in denial of it. I like to think she's with my father and others like her now.

In this collection of four memoirs of Sr Lucia, she describes the apparitions as well as her own life and those of Jacinta and Francisco. It also includes the text of the consecration to the immaculate heart of Mary and a theological interpretation of the third secret of Fatima by Pope Benedict XVI.

What struck me most about the memoirs was the similarity between the apparitions of the three children and those of St Faustina. Both emphasized the divine mercy of Christ and both were asked to say similar things: "I offer you the most precious body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ".

I also got a real sense from the memoirs that devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary has been part of the Catholic tradition for many centuries and continues to be relevant today.

What I loved the most about these memoirs was the emphasis on the fact that the Catholic Church has responded to the requests of Our Lady during the apparitions and while we could all fulfil devotion to the first five Saturdays better, we are at least listening, responding, adapting and changing. That to me, sounds like a healthy state to be in.

A true first-person account by Sister Lucia, this book fills in any gaps that could possibly be missing in the story of Fatima, Sister Lucia's part during her entire life, and her reflections on the children Francisco and Jacinta.

Although I believe I have read more than the average person interested in Fatima, this book reviewed and really supplemented what I already knew. Sister Lucia noted in many of the sections that she was writing them in response to directives by her superiors and others in the Catholic Church hierarchy to do so. The writings are dated at various points over the years which helps also to explain why some facts were revealed when they were.

I continue to read on the Fatima topic to prepare for hopefully - an upcoming pilgrimage to Fatima!

I was told that in this book Lucia said the consecration was done but it did not… only that it would be too late.
This also answers why St. Francisco was told to pray many rosaries. Why St. Jacinta spoke sommuch about Hell.

I thought that I had made a dopey purchase here. I had read the Fatima in Lucia's Own Words a few years ago in a stunning find at the public library. In subsequent years, the title disappeared from the library shelf, and acquiring the text in print form on Amazon proved to be pricey.

But not only had I already read the book, but I also owned a print copy of Jacinta, the Flower of Fatima. I didn't realize it when I purchased it, but this books was pretty much a repackaging of Fatima in Lucia's Own Words--except it also had some annoyingly pompous color commentary from the author.

Yet, with all of that reading and re-reading of the Fatima message, I am still very glad that I bought this little ebook. I consider it one of the best $3 I have ever spent.

Lucia's words continue to be both powerful and inspiring. Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco all radiated holiness--but in very distinct way according to their natures. Their sufferings were intense, and their willingness to suffer for the truth was an awesome witness both to God and to the message His Mother sent to the world. In places, it was actually hard to put my Kindle down when I needed to go do something else.

Near the beginning of the text, as well as near the end, there were excerpts from (and shameless advertisements for) another Fatima book. Unlike the Jacinta book, most of the add-ons were extremely useful. I did not know, for example, that there was a connection between Our Lady of Fatima and Queen Esther of the Old Testament. I'm not so sure about the author’s assertion that the Angel of Portugal was St. Michael, however.

I have a lot of books on my shelf and in my Kindle where I wonder if I am ever going to read them again. This is definitely not the case with Fatima in Lucia's Own Words. It's the sort of inspiration that I suspect I will seek out over and over again.

ALL FOUR OF HER MEMOIRS, PLUS ADDITIONAL MATERIALS

Lucia wrote in the Prologue to her First Memoir, “I now take up this work, in spite of the repugnance I feel, since I can say almost nothing about Jacinta without speaking either directly or indirectly about my miserable self… I trust Your Excellency will permit me to withhold certain matters concerning myself as well as Jacinta, that I would not wish to be read before I enter eternity. You will not find it strange that I should reserve for eternity certain secrets and other matters… I remember, besides, a saying that I heard from a holy priest, when I was only eleven years old… The good priest gave me his blessing and said, ‘You are right, my child. The secret of the king’s daughter should remain hidden in the depths of her heart.’… One day, however, I sought the advice of a holy priest… because I did not know how to answer when they asked me if the most Blessed Virgin had not told me anything else as well… This priest … said to us… ‘When they put that question to you, just answer: ‘Yes, she did say more, but it’s a secret.’ … In this way, you can keep your secret under cover of our Lady’s.’” (Pg. 17-19)

“[On]the 13th day of May, 1917… I must first admit that there were certain aspects of Our Lady’s apparitions which we had agreed not to make known to anybody. Now however, I may have to speak about them in order to explain whence Jacinta imbibed such great love for Jesus, for suffering and for sinners, for whose salvation she sacrificed herself so generously… that very afternoon… Jacinta kept breaking into enthusiastic exclamations: ‘Oh, what a beautiful Lady’…” (Pg. 28)

“In the meantime, news of what had happened was spreading. My mother was getting worried, and wanted at all costs to make me deny what I had said… she was determined to make me confess that I was telling lies… She warned me that she would force me… to go to those people whom I had deceived, confess that I had lied and ask their pardon… my little companions were already waiting for me… Francisco said to Jacinta: ‘You see! It’s all your fault. Why did you have to tell them?’ … she said through her tears, ‘I will never tell anything to anybody again.’” (Pg. 32) “When, some time later, we were put in prison, what made Jacinta suffer most, was to feel that their parents had abandoned them…” (Pg. 35)

“When the moment arrived for her brother to go to heaven… Jacinta suffered keenly when her brother died… She answered, ‘About Francisco, I’d give anything to see him again’… I said to her, ‘It won’t be long now till you go to heaven. But what about me?’ ‘You poor thing! Don’t cry! I’ll pray lots and lots for you when I’m there.’” (Pg. 42-43) “The day came when she was to leave for Lisbon. From Lisbon, she sent me word that Our Lady had come to see her there; she had told her the day and hour of her death.” (Pg. 46)

In the Second Memoir, she recounts, “I therefore chose three companions from among the shepherds… I chose: Teresa Matias, her sister Maria Rose and Maria Justino… I invited my companions to pray the Rosary with me… We had hardly begun when, there before our eyes, we saw a figure poised in the air above the trees: it looked like a statue made of snow… The figure disappeared… I resolved to say nothing; but my companions told their families what had happened the very moment they reached home.” (Pg. 59)

In 1916, “we saw coming towards us…. The figure I have already spoken about… It was a young man, about fourteen or fifteen years old, whiter than snow… he said: ‘Do not be afraid! I am the Angel of Peace… Pray thus. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications…” (Pg. 62)

“I will not delay now describing the Apparitions of May 13th. It is well known to Your Excellency, and it would therefore be a waste of time for me to go into it here… The 13th of June, Feast of St. Anthony, was always a day of great festivities in our parish… I left home and called at my uncle’s house, where Jacint and Francisco were waiting for me. Then we set off for the Cova da Iria, in expectation of the longed-for moment. All those people followed us, asking a thousand questions…. I could see that my mother was deeply distressed… she wanted at all costs to compel me… to admit that I had lied. I wanted so much to do as she wished, but the only way I could do so was to tell a lie…” (Pg. 67-68)

“As I heard people say that the devil always brings conflict and disorder, I began to think that, truly, ever since I had started seeing these things, our home was no longer the same, for joy and peace had fled. What anguish I felt! I made known my doubts to my cousins. ‘No, it’s not the devil,’ replied Jacinta, ‘not at all. They say that the devil is very ugly … But that Lady is so beautiful, and we saw her go up to heaven.’” (Pg. 70) “The 13th of July was close at hand, and I was still doubtful as to whether I should go. I thought to myself: If it’s the devil, why should I go to see him?’… On the following day, when it was nearly time to leave, I suddenly felt I had to go… Crowds of people were waiting for us along the road… This was the day on which Our Lady deigned to reveal to us the Secret.” (Pg. 71-72)

“Now, Your Excellency, here we are at the 13th of October. You already know all that happened on that day. Of all the words spoken at this Apparition, the ones most deeply engraved upon my heart were those of the request made by our heavenly Mother: ‘Do not offend Our Lord and God any mor, because He is already so much offended!’” (Pg. 81-82) Later, she adds, “Maybe someone will want to ask: How can you remember all this? How? I don’t know. Our dead Lord… has allotted to me this little portion---my memory. He alone knows why.” (Pg. 102)

In the Third Memoir, she wrote, “What is the secret? It seems to me that I can reveal it, since I already have permission from heaven to do so… the secret is made up of three distinct parts… The first part is the vision of hell. Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth… We then looked up at Our Lady, who said to us… ‘You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end, but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the pontificate of Pius XI… To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout the world…. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.” (Pg. 108-109)

“The second part refers to the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.” (Pg. 111) “It may be, Your Excellency, that I should have made known all this some time ago, because they consider that it would have been twice as valuable years beforehand. This would have been the case, if God had willed to present me to the world as a prophetess. But I believe that God had no such intention, when He made known these things to me… God willed only to make use of me to remind the world that it is necessary to avoid sin, and to make reparation to an offended God…” (Pg. 115)

In the Fourth Memoir, she wrote, “Your Excellency has expressly required of me to write about the Apparitions of the Angel, putting down every circumstance and detail… Although I cannot give the exact date, it seems to me that it was in 1915 that the first Apparition took place. As far as I can judge, it was the Angel… My three companions … were with me… I saw, poised in the air above the trees… what appeared to be a cloud in human form, whiter than snow… This happened on two further occasions, but on different days… Little by little, this impression faded away, and were it not for the events that followed, I think I would have forgotten it completely. The dates I cannot set down with certainty, because at that time, I did not know how to reckon the years, the months, or even the days of the week. But I think it must have been in the spring of 1916 that the Angel appeared to us…” (Pg. 160-161)

“I was playing with Jacinta and Francisco… Suddenly we saw what seemed to be a flash of lightning… we beheld the Lady all dressed in white… Then Our Lady spoke to us: ‘Do not be afraid… I have come to ask you to come here for six months of succession, on the 13th day, at this same hour. Later on, I will tell you who I am and what I want. Afterwards, I will return here and yet a seventh time.” (Pg. 165)

Of October 13th 1917, she recounts, “Masses of people thronged the roads. The rain fell in torrents… Not even the muddy roads could prevent these people from kneeling in the most humble and suppliant of attitudes… A little later, we saw the flash of light, and then Our Lady appeared on the holmoak… opening her hands, she made them reflect on the sun, and as she ascended, the reflection of her own light continued to be projected on the sun itself. Here, Your Excellency, is the reason why I cried out to the people to look at the sun. My aim was not to call their attention to the sun, because I was not even aware of their presence. I was moved to do so under the guidance of an interior impulse.” (Pg. 172-173)

This book will be of great interest to people studying Fatima.

Fatima in Lucia’s own words is a wonderful primary source about the Marian apparitions that occurred in Portugal in 1917. Lucia is not a colorful writer, but this adds to the charm of the memoir. Under obedience to her bishop, she records the lives of the shepherd children and the details of the apparitions with humility and candor. Reading this book is like sitting down and picking Lucia’s brain, so much fun!

Conflicted

Very conflicted with the content in this book. Although supposed apparitions from heaven and heavenly beings, the circumstances and details dont really seem "Godly" in the slightest

¿Estaría bueno no?

Peace! On! The! Streeeeeeeets!
(Aunque sea difícil).

Izvrsna knjiga. I tolika nadolazeća zla još uvijek možemo izbjeći.

Having grown up knowing the story of the Marian apparitions at Fatima and watching an animated film of the event over and over again, I was very interested in reading the account from Lucia's point of view.
Lucia wrote the first account of the apparitions in the 1930s, only when commanded to do so by her religious superiors. Even then, she only told what she was explicitly told to reveal, and made it known that certain "secrets" we not yet to be revealed. Mostly, in the earlier testimonies that she wrote, she described her cousins, Jacinta and Francisco, who died within a few years of the apparitions. She described how they were constantly bombarded by people, traveling from great distances to ask them questions and to ask them to pray for their petitions or to ask The Lady for healing. Oftentimes, the children would run and hide when they heard or saw people coming. They just wanted to be left alone to pray and reflect, but when they were unable to escape people, they offered it up for sinners.
I really enjoyed learning more about the three children and what they really went through.
I recently watched Fatima The Movie and even it did not follow the story quite as it happened according to Lucia, so I'm glad to have a first person account of the story now.

For anyone with an interest in Fatima, this is an essential read. It's not too long, and is helpfully separated into four different parts, but it's a very important book because it compiles letters written by Lucia to her bishop, the letters on which most information on Fatima is based. The first part is Lucia's initial, more brief account of the events, at which point she was still concerned about sharing the Secrets. However, the second account of events which follows is much more thorough and detailed, as at this point she was explicitly asked by the bishop to share everything. The final two parts are her memories of Jacinta and Francisco respectively, providing a real insight into what these young saints were like. The events surrounding Fatima are recounted so personally that the letters made me feel great sympathy for the little Seers who were so unfairly treated at the time; but they also inspired me to witness the great faith of the two Saints and Lucia herself.

I found this book very interesting. Sister Lucia's recollections of Jacinta and Francisco were enlightening. I found more things about Lucia and her two little friends, that I didn't know about.
It is a more detailed book of their lives before, during and after the Apparitions.
The only question that I'm having a hard time with is Our Lady's request of the Consecration of Russia. In this Lucia said that Pope John Paul II consecrated the World, Nations and all the people to Mary's Immaculate Heart in 1984, which would include Russia. But Russia wasn't mentioned verbally. In this, Sister Lucia states and confirms that the Act of Consecration was accepted on what Our Lady wished.
I'd really like to believe that and not be a doubting Thomas, as Russia has not converted and there are still wars going on, even tho some are deescalating.
Otherwise, it's a really good book and I recommend it highly!

It is hard to comprehend that the apparitions at Fatima only happened 100 years ago and that exactly 100 years later I would be reading Sr Lucia's comprehensive memoirs. As a Marian devotee, reading this book only solidified my love for Our Lady even more. It has gotten me through very difficult moments during the past few months and instilled the necessity of sacrifice for the salvation of souls. Sr Lucia's words have the ability to transport you to the past and place you in Portugal as if you were one of the three children. Her touching words and her love for her cousins (Jacinta and Francisco) brought me to tears. Their witness is something that my heart will carry forever and that I will strive to imitate. If you want a book that brings you to tears and you are a Marian devotee, I definitely recommend this book, guaranteed it will bring many graces to your spiritual life.

I've read other books about Fatima. This particular book explains how each of the children reacted to the apparitions of Mary. It was told in the words of Sister Lucia. She also gives details about how her cousins would offer their meals and water to the poor children, and they prayed endless prayers for reparation of sins. Many of the facts are the same as in the other books written about Fatima, however this gives a more personal view into the Jacinta and Fransisco. All books on the topic about Fatima are
good books to read. If you want to know anything about Fatima and its events read this or any other book on the topic.

I read the memoirs of Lúcia dos Santos while being in Fátima. It’s really special to read about what happened 100 years ago while being in that exact same spot. You get glimpses of the culture in that time. Sister Lúcia writes everything in a simple way and to the point. She doesn’t write how we should interpret the messages of Our Lady. She describes what she and Jacinta and Francisco did following receiving the secrets. She also writes in her memoirs why she now reveals the secrets of Our Lady.

Five stars

I read this book to learn more about the apparitions as our parish priests recently did a weekly program during the month of May about our blessed Virgin Mary and the different events that lead to the visions at Lourdes, Fatima and Kibeho, Rwanda. As Portugal is part of my heritage I was most interested in Fatima and who better to receive affirmation than from the person who saw this in person.

I purchased this book while in Fatima this summer. It's the interesting account of what Lucia, Francesco, and Jacinta experienced while being visited by the blessed Mother. I learned a lot reading this; however, it is a rather dull rendition as it is in Sister Lucia's actual words. I was unaware of "the secrets" and how much suffering the children endured. A real testament of faith.

Interesting book

Lots of detail from Lucia about Mary's visions to the children that I didn't know before. Would be a good one to have in hard copy too since there are some prayers that were new to me that would be good to refer back to.

A detailed memoir from Lucia, one of the 3 child visionaries. She amazingly captures the visions of the Blessed Mother, the short lives of Jacinta and Francisco, and the 3 secrets that were entrusted to them. After just returning from Fatima, this book from Lucia completed the story.

Awesome story, simple and powerful.
The translation is not very good.
As it is a collection of different writing by Lucia, it tends to repeat itself a bit.
Still, worth reading, powerful message, makes you question your life, pushes you to a desire to better version of yourself.
