MY RATING: 5⭐
GENRE: Suburban Suspense Thriller
PUBLICATION DATE: October 14th, 2026
Holy smokes wasn’t this just a deliciously disturbing dystopian little gem?!
The year: 1956. The neighborhood: Willowbrook Heights. The new residents: Evelyn and Richard Harding. The welcoming committee: seven women identically dressed, with identical smiles, carrying identical tuna casseroles. The welcome gift: a 300+ page handbook on the rules and regulations of the community. Strict rules dictating expectations of the wives: from how the homes must be managed, to how they dress and behave. What at first seems a little odd to Evelyn quickly starts to turn into something disturbing and sinister. And the more she digs, the more she realizes that her very identity is in peril.
🥳 What I loved
Writing: First and foremost, Forsyth’s writing is absolute perfection, seamlessly blending a satirical dark humor with intense dread. Very impressive!
Atmosphere: Willowbrook Heights was masterfully created—creepy, unsettling, suspenseful, and disturbingly perfect—fully immersing me in its world. I was completely absorbed in trying to figure out what the hell was behind the mask of perfection.
Characterization: YOWZA these characters were so incredibly bizarre and written with such depth (yes, even the freakish identi-twins!). Of course, our protagonist, Evelyn, is the star of the show. Obstinate, headstrong, outspoken and ridiculously funny, I was rooting for her from the very first chapter!
🤔 Things to consider
Pacing: This character-driven story takes its time building the world but stick with it—the payoff is totally worth it! (and this is coming from someone who doesn’t normally do well with slow-burns!)
Final Verdict & Recommendation
A brilliant domestic suspense set in the 1950s, this was such a treat! Highly recommended for fans of satirical dystopian domestic suspense (or combinations of those). I absolutely LOVED this. Forsyth is now on my watch list! 5⭐
***Do not miss the author’s afterword for some insights into the motivation behind this novel. Truly insightful!

Review of advance copy
When dreams turn into a nightmare! I bled for Evelyn, and I'm still bleeding for her and all she put up with. I must have had multiple ulcers and a few nervous breakdowns , as I read her story. I would have been one step from an insane asylum. No money, no personal phone, and no car, and now Richard made her an appointment with Dr. Wilcox!!! I had no idea how far this perfect community went to maintain the facade. What an ending!!??

This book is a delicious mix of mid‑century charm and creeping dread, and I loved every second. The HOA absurdity had me cracking up, even as the story tightened into something sharp and sinister. Evelyn’s messy defiance crashing into Patricia Wilcox’s tyranny is wildly entertaining, and the Stepford‑style wives make the whole neighborhood feel like a complete nightmare. Once the truth behind those “treatments” hits, the book goes full throttle—smart, eerie, and immensely satisfying.
