The sky is raining fire and three thousand miles separate a mother from her missing daughter.
When a devastating meteor barrage tears across the planet, cities burn, power disappears, and civilization begins to unravel almost overnight.
For Taylor Bennett, an NTSB investigator accustomed to reconstructing disasters after they happen, survival is only the beginning. Her twenty-one-year-old daughter Rebecca vanished in San Diego days before the catastrophe, and Taylor is stranded on the opposite side of the country. With communications gone and help increasingly uncertain, she has only one start west.
Meanwhile, Rebecca is alive, but just barely.
Escaping captivity as the world collapses around her, she finds herself responsible for others who are just as frightened and unprepared as she is. Their search for safety leads them to Andrew Harper, a quiet country preacher who opens his doors to strangers without hesitation. Yet beneath the clerical collar lies a man whose instincts, weapons, and remarkable ability to survive suggest a life very different from the one he claims.
As meteors spill from the sky and society fractures below it, Taylor and Rebecca begin separate journeys defined by danger, sacrifice, unexpected allies, and the belief that somewhere beyond the devastation, the people they love are still waiting.
The Darkest Road is a gripping post-apocalyptic thriller about survival, family, redemption, and finding hope when the world goes dark. If you love books by Mike Kraus, Kyla Stone, TL Payne, A. American, Franklin Horton, Jack Hunt or Ryan Schow you'll LOVE Justin Bell!
OMG! I AM DYING BECAUSE OF THE ENDING!!! TALK ABOUT A CLIFFHANGER!!!
Such an amazing book 1! I am dying for there to be 100 more books in this series and I am in agony that the author has just started this series and that means I’m going to have to wait forever before book 2 comes out! I would also highly recommend the prequel to the series if you have a chance to grab it. It gives some background on several of the characters. Not all, but some.
The scene at the cabins gutted me and that’s all I’m going to say because I hate spoilers. All I’ll say is I was shocked, then sad, then angry. I felt what happened was completely preventable but at the same time, I did understand why it happened in the first place.
Favorite character hands down is Father Andrew. By a mile. Calvin seems like he is going to be an amazing character. Full of so much knowledge that will definitely be lifesaving at some point.
I read a ton of post-apocalyptic books and I was so excited to see meteors/asteroids and not just the same ole, same ole, EMP business - even though that is definitely a part of this too.
If I could give this book 10 stars I would but I’ll have to settle for giving it 5 as that’s the highest I can give. If you like post-apocalyptic, survival stories with human emotions, decision, and consequences, then you’ll love this book.
