Keigo Higashino (東野 圭吾) is one of the most popular and biggest selling fiction authors in Japan—as well known as James Patterson, Dean Koontz or Tom Clancy are in the USA.
Born in Osaka, he started writing novels while still working as an engineer at Nippon Denso Co. (presently DENSO). He won the Edogawa Rampo Prize, which is awarded annually to the finest mystery work, in 1985 for the novel Hōkago (After School) at age 27. Subsequently, he quit his job and started a career as a writer in Tokyo.
In 1999, he won the Mystery Writers of Japan Inc award for the novel Himitsu (The Secret), which was translated into English by Kerim Yasar and published by Vertical under the title of Naoko in 2004. In 2006, he won the 134th Naoki Prize for Yōgisha X no Kenshin. His novels had been nominated five times before winning with this novel.
The Devotion of Suspect X was the second highest selling book in all of Japan— fiction or nonfiction—the year it was published, with over 800,000 copies sold. It won the prestigious Naoki Prize for Best Novel— the Japanese equivalent of the National Book Award and the Man Booker Prize. Made into a motion picture in Japan, The Devotion of Suspect X spent 4 weeks at the top of the box office and was the third highest‐grossing film of the year.
Higashino’s novels have more movie and TV series adaptations than Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum, and as many as Michael Crichton.

5 star aaargh
17 hari aku baca ini, bukan karena bukunya jelek atau slow tapi aku hemat-hemat bacanya karena ini buku terakhir Keigo Higashino hufttt.
Oke mari ngomongin bukunya, bisa dibilang fast paced dan ceritanya langsung to the point menurutku engga muter dulu kesana-kemari kaya buku buku lainnya. Somehow merasa buku ini formulanya kaya campur campuran buku-buku lain tapi ah sepertinya hanya perasaan ku saja. Kasus utamanya menurutku memang kurang kuat, kebantu banget sama endingnya yang wadidaw gila pas baca merinding parah rasa-rasanya pengen kubaca ulang nanti.
Engga expect something wah sama ceritanya karena ga pengen jatuh sama ekspektasi sendiri, lagipun sejak Invisible Helix Prof Yukawa udah gaada lagi pemecahan teka teki fisika, disini pun begitu.
SPOILER DIKIT⚠️⚠️⚠️
Kasus di buku ini terhubung dengan kasus di buku The Devotion of Suspect X, dan disini kita dapet epilog lanjutan dari ending buku itu.

Being the final book from an author I have greatly enjoyed over the years, I was really hoping to give this a positive review. But it just isn't very good, and certainly not up to the level of Higashino Keigo's output. The final twist may be intended to place this work in the lineage of its predecessors, it really just reminds us that this used to be a much better series.
(The following is all from the dust jacket, so unless you want to avoid even that much, please do not read further). The final Galileo mystery finds Utsumi being stabbed by a 70-year-old man in a supermarket. However, this is only the beginning of the revenge against Utsumi. Except it really isn't. Actually, this "mystery" just gets resolved by the two characters involved, who sing like birds the second a policeman asks them a basic question. There is no police work required to figure out the situation. It is just a tossed together plot in search of characters with any dimension. I don't even agree that it is a "mystery"--it is just something that happened, which then required the people involved to explain it all in exceptional detail. It is axiomatic that good writing shows, not tells, and this book could really use that lesson.
The tacked-on plot involving a past entry in this series doesn't really make any sense, when you stop and think about it. So what was the point? I guess it is to take the author down memory lane, so he along with his characters can float on in the past. He is due this much, as a person, but as a reader, I felt on the short end of the stick.

The curtain call. The wrap up. The ode. The optimism that humanity always prevails in a swamp of crimes and misdemeanors as it's scientific approved that humanity became less and less violent, more and more empathetic, and more and more compassionate as civilization evolves.
Whodunits have been revived since the 80s of the 20th centuries mainly as a response to the late era of extreme capitalism, especially in the western post-capitalist economy (including Japan.) As social tensions in the late capitalist societies are inevitable, whodunits triumph.
And for a hard-core whodunit fan, we don't want a genre to bloom merely because of the decay of societies. But as long as the eternal problem of capitalism exists, whodunit exists. There will be, and there have been many more Agatha Christie, Keigo Higashino, and Ho-Kei Chan to come in the future. Which is a great thing in the literary world.
Salute, for over 100 works in this genre, for over 100 confirmations of humanity under the influence of inhumanity, for over 100 times of entertainments and puzzles unique in these genre. Salute.

Come gialli nel senso stretto non è niente di che.Ho apprezzato molto il finale la chiusura di un cerchio.Il modo migliore per concludere la serie del detective Galileo.
