This is such a lovely little book -- I am quite sorry that it is over. Unfortunately, there was not enough of the titular "Shadowseeker". I kind of wish the author let go and let his imagination loose. It feels as if he wanted the book to be reasonably short and failed to follow through with some quite imaginative settings and/or actions. For example, I would not have minded spending a longer time at Spellworks, Inc. Let us hope that the author delves deeper into the magical world in the sequel, because some of his ideas are rather ingenuous and are, in my opinion, original. Spell pellets could be a great flashback device (used at least once as such in this text). I for one would have loved to learn more about the shadowseeker himself.

Another bright side are the are humorous passages peppered throughout the book. A valuable source is all the manure shoveling which takes place in the first third of the book. One finds it all quite amusing after managing to overcome the fact that there is so much magic floating around, but the teenagers still manually clean the stables. On the other hand, this might just be a part of building character -- the English "stiff upper lip" and such?

There is one remark I do have -- on a couple of occasions, a word was out of place. It might be a good idea for the editor to take one extra sweep through the next book in the series.

I must admit, I really enjoy main characters with confidence coming out of their ears and a healthy dose of recklessness! I am once again left wondering why this series is not more widely known. It is an outstanding low fantasy!

Slower than the first one in my opinion. Also hated how the author described things and even used some of the same jokes in this book as the first. There were whole paragraphs I easily skimmed over because I had read the EXACT description in book one. Good quick read and follows the story up well, but the descriptions being the same killed me.

In my review of book 1 I mentioned several things I really liked, and expressed the hope that the series would take a step forward and really become great. It doesn't really do that. The story is fine, the level of quality is similar to the previous book, but I never got the same sense of knowing and liking these characters as I liked the ones in Harry Potter.

I know, it's a bit harsh to compare a self-published series with the most successful and popular YA fantasy of all time. But the author set himself up for that comparison. This is rather similar in style and feel with Harry Potter, but different enough not to feel like a clone. But if you are going to imitate the master, then people are going to compare you with the master.

I would give these books to a child who is looking for something like Harry Potter, though. It's good enough to give that a try.

Still trying to figure out if I will recommend to my kids. "Cursing" and fixation on outward appearance still bothers me. So far no teenage angst, etc. Main characters are likable. I am planning on reading book 3.

Der zweite Band startet zwei Wochen nach Ende des ersten Bandes, es geht also nahezu nahtlos weiter. Ben und Charlie sollen nun offiziell Lehrlinge im Institute of Magic werde. Natürlich geht das nicht ohne ein paar Turbolenzen vonstatten, alles in allem empfinde ich diesen Band aber als deutlich ruhiger. Es wird mehr Fokus auf den Alltag und ihre Ausbildung gelegt, was den Vorteil hat, das wir so ein bisschen mehr über das Institut erfahren. Natürlich bleibt es nicht so, auch hier gibt es immer wieder spannende Abschnitte, in denen es mehr zur Sache geht, alles in allem ist es dennoch gemäßigter, aber nicht langweilig, was mir aber gut gefällt. Die Welt hat einfach so wunderschöne skurile Details, das auch ruhige Sequenzen einfach schön sind!
Sehr gut gefallen hat mir, das man eine schöne Dynamik zwischen Ben und Charlie hat und ihre jeweilen Stärken und Schwächen schön zur geltung kommen. Nathalie bleibt hingegen ein wenig blass, was ich aber nicht störend fand. Sie passt einfach nicht so gut in den gesetzten Fokus, sie dort hineinzupressen hätte künstlich und gezwungen gewirkt. Ich denke aber nicht, dass das so bleiben wird.
Alles in allem hat es mir wieder ausgesprochen gut gefallen, ich mag die Fortsetzung sehr und freue mich schon auf den dritten Band!

Ben und Charlie sind nun Lehrlinge am Royal Institute of Magic, und das bedeutet viel Arbeit. Sie müssen lernen, Ställe ausmisten, sich für die erste Prüfung vorbereiten, und außerdem sind sie noch auf der Suche nach Bens Eltern.

Auch der zweite Roman der Reihe beginnt mit einem Rückblick, dieses Mal ins Jahr 1603, Queen Elizabeth, die Gründerin des Instituts, ist verstorben, und ihr Nachfolger nicht sehr geeignet dem Institut vorzustehen, so dass dessen Direktoren Elizabeths Rüstung vor unbefugtem Zugriff verbergen müssen. Heute wissen nur die jeweiligen Nachfahren der damaligen Direktoren, wo die einzelnen Teile versteckt sind. Da aber die Gefahr eines Krieges mit den Dunkelelfen immer wahrscheinlicher wird, wird sie nun benötigt.

Direkt zu Beginn gibt es in diesem Zusammenhang direkt eine sehr spannende Szene, und damit einhergehend ein paar weitere Informationen zu den Dunkelelfen, zum Beispiel auch den Untertitel dieses Romans betreffend. Spannend ist es auch im weiteren Verlauf. Manchmal tat mir nur Charlie ein bisschen leid, der sich Bens überbordendem Eifer, seine Eltern zu finden, öfter einmal unterordnen muss.

Ben und Charlie sind beste Freunde, aber auch ganz unterschiedliche Charaktere, während Ben draufgängerisch und sportlich ist, ist Charlie mehr der Denker, beide ergänzen sich dadurch gut, und können oft nur im Team schwierige Szenen meistern. Dabei steht ihnen, wie schon im Vorgänger die Halbelfe Natalie zur Seite, die schon ein bisschen erfahrener ist, was das Institut und die Magie angeht, und zudem, im Gegensatz zu Ben und Charlie, in der magischen Welt aufgewachsen ist. Zu dritt sind sie ein perfektes Team.

Bei den Erwachsenen des Instituts gibt es einen Neuzugang, die Meisterin der Lehrlinge, Dagmar Borovich, die offensichtlich Geheimnisse hat, und die man zunächst nicht klar zuordnen kann, denn auch im Institut gibt es nicht nur gute Charaktere.

Der zweite Band treibt die Geschichte gut voran, ist spannend, deckt einige Geheimnisse auf und stellt neue Rätsel, so dass man gespannt auf den nächsten Band sein kann. Da die Geschichte, die auch mir als Erwachsener gut gefallen hat, aufeinander aufbaut, sollte man die Bände unbedingt in der richtigen Reihenfolge lesen.

The second instalment in the Royal Institute of Magic series follows Ben on his first official day at the Institute. But it doesn’t go as he expects. A Shadowseeker, Dark Elf assassin, attacks the Dragon Way. Chaos erupts, with the fear of a killer that can literally pop out of thin air anywhere in the world making even the Department Heads anxious.

To make matters worse, Ben much juggle his Apprenticeship with tracking down Elizabeth’s Armour and learning his family’s secrets. Not only does he have to find the nest piece of the armour, but he must also find its Guardian. Not mere feet since just like his family, their identity and ancestry are hidden after hundreds of years of secrecy. Even if he can find them, he must get passed a creature more ferocious than a Shadowseeker and strong enough to take down a dragon.

The world of the Institute grows even more complicated as we learn more about the Institute departments and the Apprenticeship. Just as the first book, the characters, world and humour shine. Ben’s humour in the face of enormous obstacles along keeps this a fun and entertaining read. A magic school with a difference, the Institute feels like no other ‘school’. Instead of your typical classrooms, the Apprentices practice in the various Departments in simulation areas and study in the ancient library. Dagma, the woman that manages the Apprenticeships, a tough, strict character with an amusing undertone.

This series is sure to be action-packed and full of humour. I’ve already bought the next books and can’t wait to read what happens next. I give it 5/5.

„Auf den Spuren des Schattensuchers“ ist der zweite Band der „Royal Institute of Magic“- Reihe von dem Autor Victor Kloss.

Vor weg muss ich sagen, dass ich den ersten Band nicht kenne, aber mir die Serie empfohlen wurde und ich daher direkt mit den neusten Band eingestiegen bin. Auch wenn vieles erklärt wurde, würde ich aufgrund dieser tollen Handlung empfehlen, den ersten Band zuerst zu lesen. Dies werde ich nun direkt nachholen.

Nun Ben und sein Freund Charlie beginnen nun ihre Ausbildung am Royal Institute of Magic. Doch schon auf den Weg ins Insitute taucht ein gefährlicher Schattenscher auf und bedroht nicht nur Bens leben. Hat der gefährliche Dunkelelf es auf die magische Rüstung von Königin Elizabeth abgesehen?

Neben der lauernden Gefahr durch die Dunkelelfen muss sich Ben auch nun mit der Schulstoff von dem Institute auseinander setzten, dabei helfen die Professoren mal mehr mal weniger gut durch den Lehrstoff. Doch auf seinen Freund Charlie kann er immer vertrauen und beide kämpfen sich durch die ersten Prüfungen. Ich fand es super, dass das Hauptaugenmerk nun auf dem Institute lag und wir mehr von dem Royal Institute of Magic erfahren haben. Auch einige Professoren überraschen und die Handlung nimmt schnell an Tempo auf.

Ich hatte zuerst mit diesem zweiten Band begonnen, doch schnell gemerkt, dass man den ersten Band vorweg lesen sollte, daher gebe ich noch einmal diese Empfehlung raus. Denn es würde zu viel gespoilert werden für den ersten Band. Wird das Royal Institute of Magic nur kurz angerissen, erfahren wir im zweiten Band bereits viel mehr über die einzelnen Abteilungen und Wesen.

Der Schreibstil ist locker und sehr magisch. Die tollen Beschreibungen machen es leicht in diese zauberhafte Welt abtauchen zu können. Ich würde diese Serie wirklich jeden weiterempfehlen, denn sie ist spannend und doch auch sehr berührend.

Wir begleiten Ben Greenwood und Charlie Hornberger während ihres ersten Schuljahrs am Royal Institute of Magic, was für beide viele Herausforderungen mit sich bringt. Ich fand es interessant, mehr über die Aufteilung der einzelnen Schuljahre und die unterschiedlichen Fächer zu erfahren. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Ben eher der praktische und Charlie eher der theoretische Teil liegt. Es war schön, wie die beiden Freunde sich immer wieder unterstützt und ermutigt haben, ihr Bestes zu geben und nicht aufzugeben. Man merkt, wie tief ihre Freundschaft ist und wie gut sich die beiden Freunde kennen.

Mit Ben ist dem Autor ein vielschichtiger und sympathischer Protagonist gelungen, der seine Ecken und Kanten hat und dem man anmerkt, wie viel ihm die Aufnahme am Royal Institute of Magic bedeutet und wie sehr ihn die Suche nach seinen Eltern vereinnahmt. Mir hat gefallen, dass Ben nicht perfekt ist und immer wieder zweifelt, ob er allem gewachsen ist. Ich finde, das hat ihn umso authentischer gemacht. Zudem ist Ben mutig, aber auch ziemlich impulsiv, was ihn, seinen Freund Charlie und ihre Freundin Natalie einige Male in Schwierigkeiten bringt.

Charlie ist im Gegensatz zu Ben eher der ruhige, besonnene Typ, der über alles erst mal gerne nachdenkt und einen Plan schmiedet. Dennoch finde ich, beweist er in diesem Band einige Mal, wie mutig er ist. Zudem hat mir gefallen, wie sehr Ben und Charlie sich durch ihre gegensätzlichen Eigenschaften ergänzen und anspornen.

Da nicht nur das erste Schuljahr einige Herausforderungen für die beiden Freunde mit sich bringt, sondern sie durch die Suche nach Bens Eltern in viele brenzlige Situationen geraten, war die ganze Zeit für Spannung gesorgt. Ich habe Ben, Charlie und Natalie jedenfalls gerne bei allem begleitet, war gespannt, was sie alles erleben und herausfinden. Dabei gab es einige Wendungen, mit denen ich nicht gerechnet hätte, durch die ich das Buch aber nicht aus der Hand legen konnte.

Ich fand es interessant mehr über die Welt, in die Ben und Charlie eintauchen und vor allem das Royal Institute of Magic zu erfahren. Denn auch wenn ich bereits im ersten Band einiges kennenlernen durfte, hatte ich dennoch das Gefühl, an so gut wie jeder Ecke etwas Neues kennenzulernen. Zudem hat der Autor die Schauplätze und Figuren so lebhaft und in leuchtenden Farben beschrieben, dass sie nicht nur alle vor Augen hatte, sondern mich fühlte, als wenn ich die Orte zusammen mit Ben, Charlie und Natalie durchstreifen würde.

Fazit:
Ein spannendes und magisches Abenteuer, in dem wir die Freunde Ben und Charlie nicht nur bei ihrem ersten Jahr am Royal Institute of Magic begleiten, sondern auch bei der Suche nach Bens Eltern. Ich habe Ben, Charlie und Natalie gerne auf ihrem Abenteuer begleitet, bei dem sie sich einigen Herausforderungen stellen müssen und in brenzlige Situationen geraten, wodurch die Handlung die ganze Zeit spannend war. Nun bin ich gespannt, was als Nächstes auf Ben, Charlie und Natalie zukommen wird.

Short Take: I surprisingly enjoyed it.

Ben Greenwood, surely inherited his ability to get out of narrow situations despite all odds. The quest starts to become more dangerous, as Ben tries to cope with his first year at the institute along with his friends Charlie and Natalie. The story picks where it left off and starts with aplomb, introducing another magical creature, Shadowseeker, the assassin of the dark Elf Suktar. While the dark elf continues his search for Ben's parents, consequently resulting in search for finding Elizebeth's legacy, Ben continues his search for his parents, finding bits and pieces of puzzle that helps him trace the legacy. In the fascinating ride to the end of adventure in first grade for Ben, the perils only continue to increase... making it a very enjoyable read.

Ben muss ihm unbedingt zuvorkommen! Dabei soll er doch eigentlich Zauberkampf trainieren, die Ställe der Drachen und Greifen ausmisten und Benimmregeln zum Umgang mit Trollen büffeln …

An ihrem allerersten Tag Ihrer Ausbildung am Royal Institute of Magic müssen Ben und Charlie direkt miterleben, wie ein Dunkelelf, auch als Schattensucher bezeichnet, auf einem riesengroßen Panther reitend eine Schneise der Verwüstung unter den Institutsmitarbeitenden hinterlässt und etliche niedermetzelt, bevor er selbst gerichtet wird. Ben, Charlie und Freundin Natalie sind sich sicher, dass der Schattensucher es auf die Einzelteile von Queen Elizabeths Rüstung abgesehen hat, die von verschiedenen Hüter-Familien seit Jahrhunderten versteckt und bewacht werden und nach denen Bens verschwundene Eltern ebenfalls suchen. Also machen die drei es sich zur Aufgabe, die Teile der Rüstung zuerst und vor allem auch Bens Eltern zu finden. Dabei stehen sie wegen ihrer fordernden Ausbildung und der bevorstehenden Prüfung eigentlich schon genug unter Druck.

*Mein Eindruck:*
Im Gegensatz zu Band 1 ist das Cover jetzt ziemlich düster und bedrohlich. Da es auch beim Vorgänger nicht zimperlich zuging, war ich schon vorbereitet, dass es auch hier kein Kinderkram sein wird. Das Gemetzel direkt zu Anfang fand ich dann aber schon echt heftig. Es passiert wieder enorm viel und im Mittelpunkt stehen Ben, Charlie und Natalie, wobei Ben eindeutig die priorisierte Rolle zukommt. Leider gehen dadurch die anderen ein bisschen unter und vor allem auch die Geschehnisse im Institut, das Miteinander der drei Kids mit anderen Schülern, werden eher oberflächlich behandelt. Die drei stehen im Mittelpunkt, der übliche Nerd und ebenso übliche Mobber, die in Kinderbüchern irgendwie nie fehlen dürfen, haben mal eben einen sehr kurzen Auftritt, kaum nennenswert. Dennoch konnte mich das Buch fesseln, da es einfach spannend ist. Wie Ben seine Fähigkeiten als Hüter entdeckt, die vielen Geheimnisse und versteckten Bedrohungen, die sie meistern müssen und natürlich die abenteuerliche Suche nach den Stiefeln der Rüstung, das alles war schon sehr spannend. Ich hoffe, dass die kommenden Bücher der Reihe nicht ganz so vollgepropft sind mit Bens Errungenschaften und gar so vielen Rätseln, die es zu lösen gilt, da das schon sehr überwiegt und alles andere nebensächlich erscheinen lässt, was ich ein Stückweit schade finde. Dennoch: sehr gute 4/5 Sterne. Eine magische, rasante Story mit vielen Fantasy-Anteilen, sympathischen Figuren und einer Handlung, die fesseln kann.

Well it was a nice read but there are alot of stuff I dont get about the whole PLOT. Also everythring kinda goes pretty slow idk whats up with that but they spend 10 years planning and 6 months actullay doing stuff bassicly. Also Ben my dude, you are telling me this guy can do the UNIMAGINABLE WOWW he is amazing at Spell stuff ( Defense against the Dark Arts) and sucks at Diplomacy or whatever (Postion?) Point is i see alot of HP things is here. Like Alex is bassicly Hagrid like just stop🙄🙄

I’ve been pretty quiet lately, mainly due to the lack of reading or watching of anything worth writing about. I’ve spent most of my time binge watching NCIS and PSYCH.

However, I am pleased to report that I have FINALLY discovered something worth writing about – Elizabeth’s Legacy, the first book in the Royal Institute of Magic series by the late Viktor Kloss.

I wish I could shout about this book series from the rooftops! Such an enthralling read. The story moves faster in this one as there is less world building, but I enjoyed it just the same. The story has less meat on this one than the first, but it was still engaging enough to keep me entertained. Good for some light hearted reading and to find an escape from reality. Can be enjoyed by young adults and older adults just the same.

This is quite a good sequel and I enjoyed it a lot. This is also one of those books where I would've liked to see more time spent fleshing out the world, characters, and magic. I feel that a bit too much time was spent on action and plot, and honestly I really would've loved for everything to just slow down for 3-4 chapters where we just see more of the Institute and the courses. So, again, a fun read, but felt like it went by a little too quickly with a bit too much going on at times.

These books might say for children and young adults of which I'm neither by a long long way, but gosh I've really enjoyed them, they pull you into a different world which is full of magical people and magical creatures, the story is a enthralling, I was glued to each page, my only regret is that now the rest of the series has got more expensive I cannot carry on reading them, life as a pensioner has a lot of draw backs.

Fun continuation of the story. The characters grew and the world was expanded. The ending had some strong moments, but clearly was a set up for the next story. (Can't share more plot details without spoilers.)

The writing is great YA style, much more believable than many I've read. And while they struggle, the characters don't go into angst-ridden whine sessions. Good magic adventure series.

So far I'm really enjoying this series. It gives me the same feel as Harry Potter did, but the story is different! I really enjoy that the books seem to progress and keep my interest. I do wish that the author would go into more detail to really describe the characters and scenes, but I get that many young readers would get bored with that sort of writing. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series! I hope to find more series like RIM/Harry Potter, if anyone has suggestions feel free to comment!

The longer story takes more of a front seat in this volume - the first book being almost scene-setting.

Ben and his pals find the first of the Guardians and her part of the armour. They pass their first grade exam, so they can stay in the Institute.

I've been listening to the audio version of this book. It is a fun series with likeable characters. It's predictable but enjoyable.
