My life was all planned out until I got chosen to be a Crusader. I’ve never spent a day away from my family. I’ve been the perfect daughter. I was Daddy’s little girl. But then … then I was chosen and my life as I knew it came to an end. I always wondered what was on the other side of the boundary marker, I just never thought it was Hell.
I’m head over heels in love with this series! Michelle Horst has made me a true believer in the dystopian genre, and I can’t thank her enough. It lets you step outside of the norm, and enter a world full of brilliant imagination.
This is a novella based on the Dissolute series, and it follows Ruth, a very naïve and frantically scared girl, as she’s entering the training and protection of the dissolutes. Her life is completely turned upside down, as she’s now faced with surviving on the outside, and discovering the truths behind the lies she’s been told her whole life.
Her trainer happens to be Roland, who has a rep of being a tough as nails hard ass, but Ruth changes his heart and we see a softer, more loving side to him, and it’s completely changed the way I felt about him in Insensate (Book 1). He’s just who she needs to get her ready for the approaching war with the Insensates, to keep her calm, and show her that there are people still out their that want to love and protect her. I’m super excited for this series to continue, and can’t wait to see what happens next!
Whenever I read a series there are always secondary characters that I want to learn more about or get their own HEA and Ruth was no exception when I read Insensate. I was worried about her and if she would survive being trained by Roland who comes across as harsh and unfeeling (both necessary evils) in the first book, but boy oh boy can appearances be deceiving!!
I loved this insight into Ruth and Roland. I freely admit I shouted “You go girl!” as Ruth blossomed and found an inner strength to overcome her fears and personal limitations. She is definitely a developing character to watch out for as the series continues as I think she’ll do anything now to enable those she loves to survive and live in freedom of oppression.
I swooned over Chance in Book 1 but he hasn’t got anything on alpha Roland. There is so much more to him than meets the eye as can be seen in these quotes:
“You know you’ve found the right person if you’re the only person they can trust to take their fears away.”
And
“I’ll always fight for you.”
I can’t wait for the next in this awesome series!!
I was always curious about Ruth's story in Insensate, so when I heard this book was coming out, I was beyond thrilled! Even though it's a short read (it's a novella of course!) it packed a powerful punch! Ruth is special. It can only take someone like her to crack the hard shell that is Roland. And she unknowingly does it in a profound way. She also makes you fall in love with him during her journey, because yes, cold hard Roland is quite lovable after all! Ruth quickly goes from a scared little girl to a woman in love who in the end goes from the protected to the protector (she took out some Trackers!!!)
A great read for anyone who read Insensate and needs their next Michelle fix!
When I found out Ruth was being released, and there was another part to this story, I could not have been happier! It was just enough to feed the hunger of needing to know more of the Insensate story, letting us know Ruth and Roland a bit better. See? I knew Roland wasn't the big scary bad guy that he wants everyone to believe, and Ruth is so much tougher than we give her credit for (and that's the extent of the spoilers you'll get from me... you'll just have to read the story for yourself!)... I can't wait to continue this story!!
Oh my goodness! After being unable to put Insensate down, I devoured this book about Ruth. It may be short, but it is very good!
If you haven't read Insensate yet then you need to read that first. This book picks up from a point after the start of Insensate, and runs parallel to it. But the background and initial part of Ruth's story are found in Insensate.
Ruth is a younger more insecure character that Jai. But her story is just as good, and has pov from her, and the other main character.
I am now desperately waiting for the next book in the series.
To be honest I never really know what to put into a review as I don't want to give anything away for future readers, so my reviews probably are not very helpful... But just like every other one of Michelle's books, I loved Ruth. And I especially love how Michelle makes it to write her books from different POV's without actually repeating the story, which is boring. It was exciting to finally get to know more about Ruth and her story and I cannot wait to read the next book!
