Rate this book
Anna is a slave girl. Although she is a slave, she is lucky to be with a family that has always treated her well, in fact she is childhood friends with the two children of the family and their friend, Joshua, another slave-owner’s child. She has always had feelings for Joshua but had to keep her dangerous love for him hidden. As they grow up, they drift apart, until one day fate brings them back together and Joshua confesses that he too loves Anna. They start sneaking around, meeting in secret to steal a few kisses here and there, as their love for one another grows. Then, one day Anna’s father reveals that he has found a suitable husband for her. He is a slave as well and she would be able to continue serving her masters while married to him. Anna is devastated and feels that her time with Joshua was just a dream that she must wake up from. She tells Joshua, who becomes angry, swearing that no one shall have her but him, and he works hard to find a way for them to be together. The events that follow alter the lives of the whole family. Will their forbidden love survive or will both of them give up in the face of societal norms that consider their romance taboo?

Nice Story

I'm always cautious when reading stories about slavery and interracial relationships because I never know what to expect. This one was good.

Because it is such a short story, it's very fast moving so there's not a lot of background or detail. Anna is black and a slave while Joshua is white and a neighboring son of a slaveowner. Anna and Joshua practically grew up together and once Anna became a teenager, she developed feelings for Joshua, forbidden feelings that could cost her her life and him a lifetime of shame. Little does Anna know, Joshua feels the same, but how will they make this work?

I really wish the story were longer and more detailed. It all seemed a little too idealistic to me, and maybe that was the point of it all. Their relationship was met with little to no resistance which I found kind of unrealistic given the time period. I would have also liked to have seen more of their life once they left the south to travel north so they could live openly and freely.

Nevertheless, this was a good quickie if you love historical reads and want to read something quick.

I liked this book. It was set during the late 1800s. A slave and childhood friend fall for each other. Trials do present themselves. It's refreshing story with no sex scences. Just to the point story line. It gives acceptance and over comming the impossible.

A Slave to Love

This was a sweet story, but to me it seem more of a fantasy. There seem to be no substance or real facts. Considering the era it is impossible to believe that everything workout for this couple without any problems.

Clean Short Story

I really appreciate authors that write romance and keep it clean. This was a quick historical read. Good storyline and the subject matter was handled well.

Read like a fairy tale.

Short story that abruptly ended. Unrealistic. Language too sophisticated for the South. Read like an English-language classic. In a perfect world this wouldn't have happened so easily. The story was lacking in plot and adventure. Everything went too smoothly. Okay if you like fairy tales.
