After everything that happened, there are five things I’m sure of: One - My name is Grace Gentry. At least that hasn’t changed. Two - Impossibly, time can be bent, shaped, and altered. Jumping centuries breaks laws, and I’m living the consequences—good and bad. Three - My future is undeniably cemented in the past. He lives in yesterday, but I want him to be part of my tomorrow. Four - Some things lost are not lost forever. Sometimes they’re only misplaced. Five - Evil is not confined by time. And this evil has traveled to find me.
One week ago, I didn’t know time could move backwards. One week ago, I didn’t know anything existed behind the glass of the mirror. One week ago, I didn’t know—couldn’t know—that when I finally found light, I unwillingly welcomed darkness.
I saw this recommended by Six Sisters Stuff on Instagram, loved the cover, it was only $2.99, so I bought it thinking I'd read it here and there for the next few weeks.
WRONG.
I picked it up at 8:00 one night, and finished at 3:00 in the morning. Good thing I didn't have school that day because I was useless.
I. COULD. NOT. PUT. IT. DOWN. Yes--that had to be put in all caps.
This was me....all night long.
What I thought was going to be an easy, light read was highly addictive, had some kind of scary moments, and OMG some swoon worthy moments!!!!
I loved Grace. She was funny, REAL, and I loved that she got stronger throughout the book. She didn't start out super brave and strong. Moments throughout the book taught her to be. And lets be honest, I LOVED how she talked about eating throughout the book. What girl doesn't love to eat?
Miles.
Can we just thank the author for bringing Miles to life? I was so happy there wasn't instalove here, it developed over time, and HALLELUJAH MILES WASN'T A JERK!!! Every YA book I read the hero is so mean to the girl, and somehow the girl still falls for him. Miles was sweet, funny, charming, and can we just take a minute and talk about that kiss? The SIX YEAR ONE????!!??
Hannah was a fantastic character too. I cared about her right from the start. Also with Annie. And Matthew. And other characters that I can't say because it'll ruin some of the BEST twists in the book.
I loved loved loved this book. The only complaint I have is that I didn't know it was the first in a series. I actually threw my kindle on the floor when it ended, then spent the next hour searching out Janessa Burt and breathing a sigh of relief when I saw the second is coming out in September.
It moved very quickly and was hard to put down. I am a little disappointed to have to wait for book #2 to come out now. I did take a star off for some technical things. Some of the grammar is a little off and there may be some historical inaccuracies. For example, even an elderly modern-day British person would not say he was "mad" if he was angry. He might say something more like "cross" because "mad" meant "crazy". It obviously didn't bother me too much because I had a hard time putting the book down and will still get the second when it comes out. And, let's face it, you sort of have to suspend reality anyway when you are asking about a story with a time traveling mirror. Overall good read.
I am officially intrigued and ready to read the next book! This story has such a neat premise. Grace lives in the modern day, when she is transported back in time through a mirror, she finds herself in the Regency era. I love the mystery in this book and that it is totally unpredictable. Miles is already a favorite and the secondary characters are so well-written, I'm definitely hooked. Grace is a little stubborn, but I still like her character and am cheering for her to solve what is really going on. So many great twists and so many excellent swoony moments! Definitely an enjoyable read you will not want to put down. This is a clean read. 4.5 stars.
This book by Janessa Burt is one I bought for my birthday. It was one that was recommended by a friend on Instagram. And then it sat on my shelf for a really long time. But it’s so good!
I loved Grace in this book. She is so spunky. In the first chapter, she’s in the present day time and she has to defend herself. I love that Grace is not afraid to do that when she needs to. But then she ends up being pushed through a mirror. And she’s in the past.
Grace is still Grace even in the past. She says things that confuse the people around her who actually belong in the past. But she also is able to help those around her. And she’s still willing to defend herself and others when she needs to.
I loved this book! And I need to read the next one right away!
This was a book club pick and I don’t know if I’d read it without book club picking it but I’m so glad I did! This is a time traveling book to Regency times. I love Miles and he’s so grumpy, glaring and Miles later in the book (🧔🏻😍).
I still am not sure if I understand the mechanics of how the time traveling works but that’s okay. This is a clean read with some swoony kisses and it ends on a cliff hanger and I definitely need to read the next book to see what happens!
I loved all the characters and Grace is a strong, stubborn, independent young woman.
All in all, this was such an addicting story. I came across this book when I read a description recommending it to fans of Jane Austen's work, which may be why I couldn't help but compare the people Grace met when she travelled back in time to characters in Austen's novels.
At times, I felt like I was reading Pride & Prejudice fanfiction with the main characters' names being changed for this book. If anything, this only made me more eager to see where the story went.
I felt that some of the characters were written as wind-up dolls during parts of the book; it was almost as if the author forgot which characters were in the room. An example: I'd find myself reading a scene wondering what Annie was thinking only to find that Annie wasn't even a part of the scene despite being in the same room as other characters.
Lastly, I had NO idea this book was going to be part of a series. I screamed in frustration when it ended. Here's hoping the sequel is published soon!
It is hard to rate an unfinished story sometimes. So much of my opinion of it will depend on the whole thing. I had this book recommended to me when I was between books. I saw this book for cheap for the kindle and was intrigued by the story of time travel. It turned out to be a cute love story, but never got into the time travel part as much I thought it would. Turns out this book is the first part of three. I am anxious to find out what happens in the next book. I like it so far.
“He bows and I curtsy, feeling very Pride and Prejudice. I don’t think I’ll ever feel normal doing that.”
When 18 year old Grace Gentry falls through time from modern day England to the Regency era, a whirlwind adventure begins….
Wow this book took me on one wild ride! There is incredible banter, that kisss, danger, suspense, endearing characters, family, shocking moments, a gorgeous setting, a brilliant storyline, secrets, and the best romance!!!
Grace is feisty and bold! I love her interactions with Miles who comes off as arrogant and conceited. The banter from the very beginning between them is fantastic!!! Their bantering and chemistry is unmatched and had my heart fluttering! I love their sweet romance that went from loathe to more so perfectly!
“Thank you,” he whispers. I look up at the sincerity of his voice, and his eyes are burning. There’s a fire in them that I feel is going to sweep over me entirely.“
This book has some scary moments, swoony moments, heart pounding moments, shocking moments, with twists and turns that had me turning the pages so quickly.
This YA historical time travel romance is brilliant, unique, creative, and addicting! What a thrilling adventure through time! Janessa is such a talented author and I love reading her books! . . . Content: death of parent in the past, several scenes with unwanted advances, dangerous situations, creepy disturbing villain, assault with a weapon, death, a scary violent scene, kisses only. I’d recommend for older teens and up.
So cute! The premise is a little silly but that's what makes it so endearing. I love anything regency era and love the comical aspect of someone from today's time being sent back there. And oh how I love a good regency love story! I'm excited to read the next one!
This book was interesting because it went in a direction opposite of what I had in mind. I'm so tired of reading stories with teenage angst, grumpy YA heroes, whiney YA heroines, and predictable villains. Mirror was none of those things and that's why I gobbled it up in two days.
Grace was a character I want my teenage girls reading about. There were certain parts of the book I wanted to yell and cheer for her.
The Regency aspect described through Grace's eyes was fantastic. I felt it was a real depiction of how it would be to go back to that time. I laughed when she described the bonnets and puffy sleeves, and how she felt barbaric compared to their strict custom and manners.
The world building was also well done. I could see Rockwell and the surrounding areas and never felt lost when I was reading.
The two main characters, Grace and Miles, were a delight to read. I enjoyed watching their relationship grow, and was close to screaming that HE NEEDED TO KISS HER ALREADY! I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book with those two.
The supporting characters were just another reason I loved this book. Even Harry, with his insane creepiness, was so well done.
I'm really hoping the author can keep the quality and tone through the rest of the series, because most trilogies fall flat after the first book. *Fingers crossed*
I'm a very dramatic reader. I gasp, laugh loudly, and ugly cry while I read a good book. My parents kept asking me what was happening because my emotions were all over the place. They kept interrupting me so I actually read this book outside on my trampoline where no one could bug me.
Grace Gentry was a great narrator. I had a blast seeing everything through her eyes. **Especially Miles** When I was engrossed in the book, sometimes I'd forget that I was reading fiction (other than the time traveling, I'm not crazy). Grace seemed like such a real person I really felt like I knew her. She became my friend while I was reading. And Miles my fictional boyfriend. And Annie my fictional best friend.
The sign of a great book is you think about it when you're finished reading. I finished this book about month ago, read it a second time, and I think about it a lot.
Reread 2023: I had forgotten a few details, so some parts felt like reading for the first time. I still enjoyed this book. It was a quick, easy read when I needed a filler.
Time travel books are my favorite, and this one did not disappoint. I thought I knew what was going to happen towards the end, but it definitely took some turns I was not expecting. I can't wait to keep reading this story!
I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast read. I couldn't put it down, even when my eyes burned from being up until two in the morning. The characters were easy to love, and the story was fun to follow. I'm eagerly waiting for the second to come out.
Do they ever stop arguing with each other? They seem to spend the majority of their time glaring at each other for perceived mistakes. It's annoying, and I kind of felt like I wasted my time reading this.
I am thrown by the awesomeness of this book! I saw this book on bookstagram and was pushed by @cant.i.read.instead to read this one. I’m so glad that I did!! Miles is absolutely amazing and this book really had it all! I’m sooo excited to see what happens in book two.
Why is this not being talked about more?? I’ve had a few friends read it and, obviously, love it.
What’s not to love? You have the grump who is perfect. Seriously. There were times I was expecting a certain reaction from him and he would surprise me. You know when authors claim their characters are grumpy but then you don’t see it? That’s not Miles. And then there’s the other side where you’re thinking the author may have gone a little too far and you’re questioning the mental health of the FMC for falling for such a jerk. That’s not Miles either. He was grumpy, he was tired of girls only wanting him for the status and money. BUT! He had a sweet and kind side and every good romance reader knows that the, he’s-only-kind-to-her trope is the best. Okay, okay. Miles is actually super great to a lot of characters. But he lives up to his grumpiness.
Grace. Y’all. This sassy girl is not shy. And she kind of puts her foot into her mouth, more than once. I grew to like Gracie girl. She was fun, but also I needed her to open her EYES to Miles.
I think if someone came into this book and wanted to fine tooth comb the regency accuracies, you wouldn’t enjoy the book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It leaves on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I highly recommend you grab that second book to have on hand when you finish Mirror.
If! You enjoy regency, read this book. If! You enjoy a fun mystery, read this book. If you trust me and my fantastic taste in books, read this book. I’m so excited to pick up the next book; Sorry ARCs, I have a date with Time.
I am intrigued… This book started out fast paced and kept at it. A surprise around every corner. I’m not really sure all I could say without spoiling it. I’m not 100% sold on the time travel element, but it’s definitely a tricky thing and feel like with the next few books all will make more sense and come full circle. I really enjoyed the main characters and especially Annie, Mile’s bouncing sister. Miles and Grace are quite the pair and I love their chemistry. Push and pull is their style and it is humorous and makes you not able to wait for more. This was definitely a cliff hanger and I’m ready to dive into the next book to find out answers!
One: those last few chapters!! I kept guessing wrong and couldn’t put it down. Two: I loved this!! I love historical, but I also like some sci-fi/futuristic concepts. Regency time travel? The best of both worlds. Except this is still modern in some ways. Grace has the best modern sense of humor. I can take a few notes from her on not taking myself so seriously. She stumbles her way into 1810 and the first thing that really truly concerns her is the chamber pot. Miles is a great fit for her. Kinda enemies to lovers concept. I love their scowl contests. Also Annie is PRECIOUS and deserves the world. Have already started the next book with very high hopes!
Wow! This book has some of everything - suspense, mystery, humor, action, and romance! I was hooked from the first chapter and could not put the book down until the end. Loved the banter between Miles and Grace - their romance is so sweet and swoony. (Can we talk about that 6-year kiss?) Be warned, the book does end on a cliffhanger. Cannot wait to read the rest of the trilogy to find out the end of the story!
This is book candy - which I love in the summertime. It's like a combination of Pride and Prejudice; love that time period, the formality, the balls, dresses, etc. Twilight; no vampires but reminds me of the way the love story developed - and Dr. Who; never seen the show but I assume it's about time travel. A fun read and it's part of a trilogy - so the fun isn't over.
I finished the book, but I found it pretty lame. The main character, Grace, was always getting mad at Miles just so the author could create drama. She claimed to be able to solve problems that her status would not give her the power to fix.
Great story. Yes, there are time travel stories all over the place but this one was different enough to keep my attention and look forward to continue reading.
I really liked this book. It has a fun pride and prejudice feel to it but for sure written for teenagers. I love that time period so if I could jump back into time that's where I would go. It would be funny the difference time had done to our etiquette and to try and go back to those rules would be hard. This is a series so of course I finished but need to keep reading to get answers.
This was such a great book. I loved the story and I fell in love with characters. This is the first of three books. It was a well written, clean romance that didn't follow the norms. This is not your typical romance, it is better. I couldn't put it down.
This was a gripping read and is great for those who love the 19th century English romance...Pride & Prejudice, Rebecca type book. I enjoyed it and finished it in 2 sittings as it was hard to put down. The time travel theme added an interesting theme to the plot.
Great fun series. I was reminded of River of Times Series. It was clean and romantic and had an interesting plot to set up for the series. I am excited she already has the trilogy finished and they will all be released soon.
