Down Bad #1
Jealous Guy
"I’m not homophobic. I just really hate it when my best friend hooks up with other guys."
To say I was thrown when my boy Orion came out is something of an understatement. It’s not that I mind that he’s queer. I definitely don’t. We’ve been tight for years. He’s my favorite person on the planet, and I support the heck out of him.
I love the man. I want him to be happy.
The problem is that when I think of some random guy touching him, I have a bad reaction. My heart begins to pound, my fists clench in rage, and I feel kind of dizzy.
I don’t mind that he’s gay. I really don’t.
I just don’t want him doing gay things with anyone...but me.

For reasons unknown to me, Jordan made up his mind about me the first day we met. He barreled into my life at unstoppable speed and made himself at home.
Orion is the latest 'victim' of the Adopt-An-Introvert program. He starts at a new school and is immediately informed by Jordan that Orion has a new BFF- Jordan. Their epic friendship is all-encompassing, with Jordan becoming possessive over Orion's time and attention. He doesn't like Orion spending time with other people, and wants to know everything about his friend. Orion's completely fine with all that, since he's hopelessly in love with Jordan.
I’ve been touch-starved before. Lots of times. It’s nothing new. In some ways, it’s pretty much a baseline, a go-to feeling for me. For years, I’ve craved Jordan’s touch and have forced the need down. I’m used to the dull throb of being on my own in my body. The emptiness of being close to him, but not close enough. The aloneness, the singular solitude of watching his hands move and not land on me. The intense loneliness of wanting someone who doesn’t want me.
Over the years their codependency only deepens. So when Orion finally tells Jordan that he's gay, Jordan doesn't know what to do. All of a sudden he feels like there's this part of Orion's life that he doesn't know inside and out, and let me tell you, he does NOT handle it well 🤣. Dude goes on a complete spiral. One of my favourite moments from the book is when he's wandering around the house, trying to see if he can find new scratches on the floor from where Orion could've possibly brought a man home and hooked up with him in the living room. Did Jesse just give us a new micro trope??? Platonic soulmates to lovers. Jordan falls first and hardest, but the poor guy thinks they're just friends 🫢🫨. He has no idea how unhinged he's about to get.
I don’t want to kiss him in the dark. I don’t want it to feel like a secret. I want to see his face when I kiss him. I want to take it slow and make it so it’s the kiss of his lifetime. So it’s a kiss he never recovers from. One he never forgets for as long as he lives.
In Jordan's single-mindedly obsessive brain, his next plan makes perfect sense: he's going to become Orion's wingman. He's going to be the biggest ally to ever ally... until he sees Orion with another guy. Our man fully melts down and moves to plan B: being gay together. Poor Orion gets everything he's ever wanted offered to him on a sexy platter, but he isn't sure how much to open up to Jordan. Can he trust that Jordy wants to be with him, or does he just want Orion not to be with anyone else?
His head becomes heavy in my hands, lolling back as he offers his mouth to me again. I take it hungrily, kissing him in a way I’m not sure can be classified as kissing anymore. What’s it called when you want someone so much that you want to be part of them, inside them, under their skin, and you want them to be part of you in exactly the same way? When you want to consume their essence and give them a piece of you they can’t ever give back?
I've seen this idea roaming around the internet seeking an author to truly do it justice, and Jesse knocked it out of the park! This is a pure, character-driven romance that reads like a whole experience. I laughed, I cried, I facepalmed... I feel like I was right there with these two idiots, falling in love. Thank you Jesse for another banger ❤️🔥

This was VERY Jesse H. Reign and honestly… I love that for me. 😂
Jordan and Orion have been best friends for YEARS, and Jordan has basically been orbiting Orion his entire life like excuse me, why are you spending time with someone who isn't me? The possessiveness, the jealousy, the why the hell am I this bothered by who you're seeing? — all of that was absolutely my thing.
And the banter? SPOT ON. 👌😂 Their friendship feels so natural, and the teasing and little exchanges between them were some of my favourite parts.
BUT.
For a relationship built on years and years of yearning and pining, I wanted this to hurt more. 😭
Like… guys. YEARS. BEST FRIENDS. ALL THAT UNREALISED FEELING. I wanted the kind of pining that makes me want to lie face down on the floor and stare into the void. Instead, the angst level was surprisingly low, and I kept thinking WHERE IS MY SUFFERING? 😂
I also felt like the story was quite one-dimensional in a way that is very typical Jesse H. Reign. We are VERY focused on Jordan and Orion, and I actually love that intense focus when I'm in the mood for it, but I wanted more context around them. More family. More of their lives outside each other. More of the people and relationships that make them who they are. A lot of that exists in the background, but we don't really get the family shenanigans happening on page, and I think that would have given the story more depth.
And honestly, I don't think that's entirely fair to Orion either. 😂 Jordan's feelings are so loud and all-consuming that sometimes Orion felt like he was living inside Jordan's story rather than having quite as much emotional space of his own.
There are also some absolutely hilarious Jordan moments once Orion comes out and Jordan starts spiralling over the fact that his best friend has apparently had an entire gay life happening without him knowing about it. The jealousy. The overthinking. The investigation. The complete I am totally normal about this behaviour while being absolutely NOT NORMAL ABOUT THIS. 😂
And the needle scene.
I don't even know what to say.
That scene is going to live FOREVER in my funny safe. 😂 It's one of those completely ridiculous little moments that my brain is going to randomly replay months from now.
And then there was Andy and West.
I wasn't expecting their college years to hit me quite as hard as they did, but damn. Their story brought some of the painful emotional angst I was missing from Jordan and Orion's years of pining. It was a smaller part of the book, but it definitely left an impression on me.
And that is probably what I enjoyed most about Jordan. His feelings are so obvious to everyone except, apparently, Jordan himself.
This book is basically:
Jordan: Orion is my best friend.
Also Jordan: Why is he talking to that man?
Jordan: I support his sexuality.
Also Jordan: WHO THE FUCK IS HE SLEEPING WITH?
Jordan: I am completely normal.
Also Jordan: Jealous Guy.exe has stopped responding.
And that title reveal? Oh, I SEE YOU, JESSE. 😂
So no, this wasn't quite the emotional, years-long pining torture-fest I was hoping for. I wanted more depth, more context, and honestly a LOT more suffering.
But it was still very much my kind of Jesse H. Reign book: intensely focused on the couple, messy feelings, jealousy, possessiveness, ridiculous internal spiralling, hilarious banter, and characters who clearly need to communicate but would rather suffer first.
And apparently I also needed a little Andy and West emotional damage on the side. 😂

October 7, 2026Not rating it, I didn't think I'd love it due to the besties to lovers trope. But I do usually like this author so tried it.
It was not for me. One of those best friends forever, and one is in love/pining for the other, and seriously it's been like a decade, they are in each other's pockets, live together in college (and of course pining guy hears a LOT of OW activity all that time in the room next door, blech, but, yeah, realistic), and the straight friend (Jordan) never clues in that Orion is gay. Never thinks hmm, who is he hooking up with when I don't know ANYTHING about him hooking up/he never takes the girls I throw at him home. And Orion has hidden his sexuality lest Jordan realize Orion is madly in love with him, but...c'mon. BEST friends and HUGELY co-dependant (Jordan far more so than Orion, who by the time the book begins, knows he "needs" to break away and fall out of love...) and Orion never told him this important personal thing? Ever? It didn't feel authentic, too contrived. And I hated how much both had been hooking up with tons of OP in the back story, Jordan being with tons of women like they're fun interchangeable/not worth more than a night of getting off (he's not terrible; the hookups are al portrayed as into that, but...really?) and Orion at first seeming like he's barely, if ever, hooked up bc he's been hiding his sexuality, then inconsistently suddenly he's Mr. Experienced Cruiser..? What? just...not for me. Not believable that it took this long for Jordan, who does know what and where his prostate is and is into that! never had one iota of an inkling of sexual interest in Orion until he learned Orion is gay, not believable that Orion kept this secret that long...just...not ringing true. I skimmed a lot and stopped reading after they got together the first time (with a truly head-desk "offer" from Jordan that I thought was kinda gross, tbh).
There's a lot of telling, especially of the past, summary, and a lot of internalizing. The author has better books.
HEA, long-time best friends to lovers. Bi-awakening ,they've kinda been in a relationship but fucking other people all that time. Not for me. Safe enough in the present in that Jordan sleeps with someone off page but it's early/before they get together, but, just not fun for me w all the OP all along in the backstory. Orion cruising and being w randos. Jordan with the revolving door in their apartment. Icky. JHR fans, some of you will definitely love it. Happy reading to you all, sincerely.

3.5 ⭐️. A lighthearted, cozy little palate cleanser. This story follows the classic FTL formula: Orion finally gets his HEA after six years of nursing a crush on his best friend. For me, the standout element here is the heavy dose of humor—especially in the opening chapters, where Orion's cringey, adorable inner monologues had me laughing out loud. Jordan's banter and interactions with his sisters had me cracking up—so funny and wholesome. Also worth mentioning are the author's signature extended sex scenes.
Compared to her three most recent books published before this one, the writing style has basically returned to her usual clean yet poetic vibe, free from that annoying habit of repeating a single detail three times over. This is a nice adjustment I am fully on board with. However, for my tastes, there's still plenty of room to trim down the inner monologues—especially during the spicy scenes. Please stop constantly interrupting the tension!
Because Poetry On Ice—one of my absolute favorite MM romances—set the bar pretty high for this author, I naturally hold her work to that standard. Here is where this one falls short:
1. Zero event or stakes. There's basically no plot outside of the romance, zero real-world friction, and no actual sign of a life outside the bubble. Even within the romance, the chapters leading up to Orion coming out to Jordan lack any real narrative thread—it's just a bunch of random filler mashed together.
2. Flat character arcs. The characterisation relies way too much on telling rather than showing, mostly because there are no actual events to drive the character growth.
3. Weak motivation. There's no solid justification for why Orion is so terrified of coming out. He has a great relationship with his mom, yet they barely have any meaningful conversations about his sexuality. Leaving that part out felt like a missed opportunity to give the story some real depth.
4. Sudden character whiplash. Jordan actively set Orion up on dates with girls, but the second Orion comes out to him, he instantly flips to wanting to keep Orion all to himself and proposes a hookup arrangement. That abrupt shift had me scratching my head. Guess his 'jealousy' only applies to specific genders, huh?
Anyway, it worked way better for me than her three most recent books, and I still had a fun time with it overall!

Jealous Guy is a highly entertaining best friends-to-lovers romance between two completely clueless guys who have been best friends for years, and one slowly starts to realize his feelings have changed while the other is clueless about his already present feelings and believes it's completely platonic. Chaos ensues as they both get unrealistically jealous over the other getting any attention from anyone while constantly denying the budding attraction clearly growing.
This romance is low-angst, funny, and completely heartwarming, watching these two fall so effortlessly for one another while keeping a strong foundation of friendship, even as they stumble through their newfound feelings. This is highly entertaining and a great start to this series. I also loved the references to another duet of some of my favorite characters.

Oh, I adored this. Friends to lovers stories take a lot for me to love them, as I a lot of the time I feel it's either boring or establishing the connection beforehand isn't done well enough, so when I do come across one that does it right, I love it and it makes me so happy. This one did it right.
Orion and Jordan have been friends for 6 years since they were 14 years old. Orion has been secretly gay and in love with Jordan basically the whole time. Jordan thought he was straight the whole time, and thought Orion was on the asexual spectrum because he never seemed to be with any girls (and for some reason Jordan didn't let himself think of any possibility of Orion liking guys) and so that seems like a big reason he didn't realize his feelings sooner.
Because as soon as Orion comes out to Jordan, it's game over. It's like now that he knows that Orion is interested in sex and that he has been and could be with people, it clicks for him. It's like as long as he didn't see Orion being sexual or with anyone in any way, Jordan was able to push down his feelings - and it seems he was in love too, but thinking he was straight - and I think Orion is the exception for him anyway, sexually - and that Orion was asexual and just generally not even trying to look at Orion in that way before made Jordan not realize this whole time.
By the way, there is one scene in the very beginning where Orion can hear Jordan next door having sex with a girl, and the things Jordan is saying. We never see or meet the girl, but just know that happens. That's about the only one screen scene we get of either of them with someone else. We learn they've had sex and hooked up with plenty of others in the past, we just thankfully don't have to see it. Also once they cross that line they're not with anyone else.
Anyways, their chemistry was so so good and I LOVED all their sex scenes, especially their first time together, it was so electric. I feel like a lot of authors these days just write sex scenes by wrote, barely putting effort into them, so when I read good ones that make me feel something, I love them all the more. Their sex scenes did that, and their first time was like earth shattering for them, I loved it.
Jordan really was a jealous, possessive guy and I loved it, of course. If there's especially one form of friends to lovers I accept wholeheartedly it's when they're perhaps a bit on the codependent side, and definitely on the possessive side. It's so fun, and seeing Jordan lose his mind over thinking of anyone touching Orion was *chefs kiss*
I only had the smallest niggle when Jordan's mom got all lecture-y and then we had a 'very special episode' type of scene right after, it felt out of nowhere and very manufactured to get the point across, when it could have done more more naturally (without the lecture too) but it was just that small part so it didn't warrant any stars off - if it had been throughout the book, yeah, but thankfully that didn't happen.
Otherwise, this was perfect and I zoomed through it. I highly recommend it and I can't wait for the next book in the series about Riley and Iver - so until then! 😘

The concept and blurb is delicious to me, the unaware in love guy with feelings for his best friend. I really really liked a lot of the author's earlier books and despite not really liking or finishing (attempting past the sample) some of her more recent books I was counting on this being a return to previous fangirl status, I had noted down the release date and all.
And I found myself, oh so bored. BORED. With a book with this concept by an author who previously wrote books I devoured in one go, past bedtime, and I kept putting this down.
A small part might be me, I am getting to dislike more first person present PoV books (her earlier books where first person but first person past POV) but maybe because those books tend to be like this one. And if what I am going to say next is snobbish, so be it, but it's true, there is a big dumbing down on a lot of books and that is really visible on this book. If movies and tv now is mean to be second screen, this reads like it is meant to be read in short bursts between notifications or to go check reels or tiktoks every page. It's all tell tell tell, no show, and it keeps telling you precisely exactly the feelings (a lot of insight for those bros! Unrealistically so) of these characters all the time. And since it is a romance, and you know precisely therer will be a HEA and between who, there is no real grip, nothing to keep the reader interested. Well there is a lot of mental lusting and sex scenes, but it's 2026, for decades there has been far more (free) pages of sex scenes online than I would ever be able to read nor want to read!
Also about the tiktok-zation of it, there are some explicit takes to show us how feminist and commited and social justice alignment of the (straight, fuckboy) MC, very neatly contained in a couple series, which is really heavy handed and does not really spread towards the rest of the book, and the contrast between us specifically being told how fantastic a feminist his mother is and he is, but not being shown that in action throughout made me niggle at details (like 4 sisters and one younger brother is a weird pattern for a family not chasing a boy child, or how could all his female hookups not be interested in anything more or even the logic poor straight girls, a guy with skills and respect for them taken off the university dating market!). It would be one case where less would have been more effective for me.
In all, sadly so disappointing. I am probably in the minority, but there is a real difference in the way this author is now writing and it is no longer to my taste!

It would be one case where less would have been more effective for me.
In all, sadly so disappointing. I am probably in the minority, but there is a real difference in the way this author is now writing and it is no longer to my taste!

October 12, 2026I can't believe this man wanted to fuck his friend just so he doesn't feel left out. Never once occurred to me that someone could mean this when they ask to be involved in a friend's life.
"Wanna consummate our...friendship?" is an unhinged thing to ask. Coming from a veteran straight guy, no less.
And Orion thinks, '....in the history of men who love men, no man has ever been down bad worse than I am for him.' which is categorically untrue imo, because Jordan is where down bad comes alive.
Straight but offers to fuck his best friend because no one else will do for his Orion.
'I spent last night holed up in my room, reading about gay guys' first sexual experiences online, and I'm not happy. I'm not happy at all.'
He comes to the inevitable conclusion.
If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.
And he likes anal anyway. No big deal.
Except....very big deal.
If he was jealous and possessive over Orion before, it's nothing compared to how he gets after they've done it.
Stalking his location, keeping him from hanging out anywhere near any gay guys, just in case, you understand.
As far as he's concerned, if Orion's catnip to him, imagine how feral a gay guy would get over him.
No. It's decided. Orion stays at home.
Anyway, this legitimately has no plot beyond the romance and sex(just how I like it) so I was very into it.
Especially because you rarely get a best friend bi-awakening romance that doesn't paint the gay one as the long suffering one. This kinda does at the start, but only because Orion hides it for way too long.
If he'd come out to Jordan earlier, I don't know if anyone else ever would have existed for Jordan.
Down bad on steroids, both of them.
Unfortunately, the usual best friends to lovers curse plagues this. They're already so entrenched in each other's lives that it's bard to tell where the friendship ends and the love begins.
Basically they go from friends who do everything together except fuck. Then later they're friends who do everything together, including the sex.
The 'falling in love' bit was not really there for me. One starts the book already there and the other moves by leaps and bounds to get there AND lap the one who got there first.

Orion has been in love with his “obviously straight” best friend Jordan since they met at 15. Jordan has always been extremely protective, and even jealous when it comes to Orion, and Orion loves it. Yet it’s also torture being 20, roommates, and in love with the guy that knows you best but STILL doesn’t know Orion is gay and in love with him.
This book is going to give you:
-a rich backstory for the characters
-friends to lovers
-unrequited love / yearning
-college roommates
-over the top MMC / more reserved MMC
-first times & self-discovery
-jealousy / obsessive behaviour
These two were very fun to read about! Orion had me really feeling for him, and I really understood why he felt he couldn’t tell Jordan about his sexuality. It wasn’t one of those books where you’re like “omg just tell him!”…it made sense. Jordan was also so chaotic but fun, I enjoyed him a lot! These guys are also young, and act young. They’re fallible, they make bad decisions, but not to the point where it becomes annoying to read about. They’re great characters, and that made the book for me!
I love that this book let their relationship and backstory stew and play out first before rushing into anything sexual or romantic. The pacing felt right.
This book is 100% centred on the relationship between the MCs, and is a really sweet, low-stakes college romance. Definitely check this one out! I recommend for sure!

October 2, 2026Before I say anything I want state that this is how I feel and my opinion don’t let what I think affect your choice on whether to read this or not.
I wish I could turn back time and tell my self to never read this book. It was not for me. I did this to myself though. I knew I wasn’t gonna like this after reading the first few chapter but I was curious.
Notes
The usual Gay best friend who’s been in love with his “straight” best friend forever. I didn’t like either MCs.
Orion and Jordan share an apartment. Orion is constantly seeing Jordan hooking up with girls in the apartment and hears fuck them in his room since Orion’s room shares a wall with Jordan. He even got off to hearing him fuck a girl.
Orion -Gay. Virgin. Hasn’t told Jordan he’s gay yet. Is in love with fuck boy straight best friend Jordan.
Jordan - Manwhore. Constantly hooking up with girls. Clueless about Orion being in love with him.
“I don’t have a problem with Orion being gay at all. I really don’t mind. I have no problem with him being gay, as long as I’m the only one he does gay things with.”
This sentence made me so mad. Like I legit wanted to throw something.

Jealous Guy is book one in the Down Bad series. This MM romance story is about Orion and Jordan.
Orion and Jordan have been best friends since they were fourteen and are now twenty years old. Orion is secretly in love with Jordan and has spent years pining for him. He also is closeted and has had a hard time accepting his queerness. My heart hurt for Orion and his loneliness of wanting someone who didn’t want him. Also because of how he had to hide important parts of himself from Jordan.
Jordan has always been possessive and wanted Orion to himself. So when Orion admits he is gay, Jordan gets jealous because he can’t stand the thought of Orion being with other guys. Jordan starts spiraling and does not handle things well, and we see how he struggles with his new found feelings.
Orion and Jordan were so sweet together and I loved how they were each other’s person. Their banter was hilarious and had me smiling. Overall I really enjoyed seeing their journey from codependent best friends to lovers. I am definitely looking forward to see what comes next in this series.

After every chapter I told myself to keep going and it was going to get better. By 91% I was asking myself if it was too late to DNF. I am now angry that I finished reading it. It should have been great. COULD have if every goddamn chapter wasn't an internal monolog of want to be poetry. The 36 actual words that were exchanged were not enough to offset my desire to skim every attempt to internalize all thoughts and feelings instead of speaking. I couldn't even make it through the spice with the lack of communication. What in the actual fuck is wrong with all the 4 and 5 stars when they barely SPOKE to one another. No. Then we jump to 3 months later and are they still in separate rooms? Do any of their friends know they are together outside of Andy who helped with arts and crafts. Ugh. Fuck all the way off.

Honestly, Jealous Guy was so silly, and I loved it so much.
Jordan was basically just a lovable golden retriever who has absolutely NO idea what’s going on with his own feelings, and watching him slowly realize that maaaayyybbeeee he’s a little more than just best friends with Orion had me cackling.
And the jealousy?! Oh, Jordy, you sweet, sweet summer child. Watching him get increasingly bothered by Orion dating other people while simultaneously being like “I don't understand why this is bothering me!” was probably one of my favorite parts.
This wasn't a super deep or angsty read for me, but it was fun, sweet, and easy to get through, and I had a good time watching these two idiots fall in love.

Couple: Orian and Jordan.
Structure: First person person, present tense, dual POV. First book in a series.
First of all, I wanna say that, as much as 3 stars isn't a good rate for a lot of people, this book isn't bad. It was an okay book for me. Part of it was because of my personal expectations and preferences, and another part was because of some plot choices and pacing. But in general, it really is not a bad book.
This review will have a few spoilers (all tagged).
First, whenever I saw the promo, I have built an idea of how the book was going to be like. I though the focus was gonna be on the "straight" friend felping his gay best friend find someone and getting super jealous, which would make him realize his feelings. We do have that in the story. But it's a small part of it.
The first 40% of the story was a bit tiring and repetitive for me, to be completely honest. The whole thing with would even have been okay if it hadn't dragged for so long. And it was really repetitive. Orion kept saying the same things about Jordan over and over again in his narration. I did skim through part of it and don't feel like I lost much.
When we finally get to the , we're already halfway through the story. Now this part starts to have the funny aspect I was expecting from the promo. Jordy really is a funny character, and his mind is an interesting place to be in. He's so intense and when he falls, he goes all in, head-over-heels, consumed by his feelings. It's a classic case of one falls first, the other falls so hard I don't know how he didn't break something LOL
The scene between them were all sweet, and they did have chemistry. The sex scenes and tension in special were well done and entertaining to read. I just feel that the over-the-top-jealousy and possessiveness (which are two things I love to read about) weren't as fluid as they could have been. Some things felt a bit rushed, and we'd end a chapter to which I wanted to see what had actually happened, only to have it broken into another chapter that depicted another scene and just mentioned about the previous one.
I do think the depiction how their relationship evolved since they were teens, how they came to love one another as friends above all, was very nice. It was well shown, and I could see why they were so drawn to one another. It had that aspect of inevitability I love.
The side characters, albeit interesting and sweet, didn't really catch my attention either. I think I'll be reading the rest of the series eventually, but it's not that would be a priority for me right now
All in all, it's a book I can totally understand people liking, even if it didn't do all that much for me. I really admire Jesse as a writer and love some of her books. It probably was just a bit differently written than those ones I love, and it didn't work for me as well as those.
If you, however, don't mind/like the points that bothered me, it's worth it giving it a try 😊

I absolutely love a best friend to lovers and I love how Jesse had me in her clutches again! Jordan and Orion were no exception to this rule. Orion has a secret, well two… aside from his sexuality he is into his best friend Jordan. Jordan, sweet sweet oblivious Jordan at times I wanted to poke you so hard but I love you too much. Jordan has some sort of claim on Orion whether he wants to admit it or not and it took him a while but BaaaaBez once he got there he got there. And shout out to the supportive big sisters who don’t sugarcoat it and are rooting for love because love is love. I was also so very proud of Orion, at first when you get to know him you he is trying so hard to keep his distance out of respect for Jordan and the fact that he doesn’t want to lose his friendship but also Jordan keeps tugging on him to be close so he’s constantly fighting his feelings. These two definitely made me appreciate honesty and how it’s important even if it’s uncomfortable because sometimes we think the worst when it very much could be the best thing to happen to us.

*mild spoilers ahead*
This was such a cute, fun, low angst read.
Childhood best friends to lovers is one of my all-time favorite tropes. I usually prefer a little more yearning and trepidation while the besties become boyfriends, but the direct, low-fuss approach in this one felt like a refreshing take on it.
Both characters are incredibly endearing. I really identified with Orion’s introverted personality. He’s the perfect contrast to Jordan and his outgoing himbo ways, which makes their dynamic even more charming.
I also loved how straightforward the story is. There are no unnecessary plot twists or manufactured drama, just two guys navigating this huge shift in their relationship and figuring out what it means for both of them.
From Orion’s long-standing crush to Jordan’s seemingly inexplicable jealousy, the story moves effortlessly and delivers plenty of fun banter and hot spice, the kind Jesse H. Reign does so well.
I seriously couldn’t recommend this one more. I had such a good time with it that I read it in one sitting, and I already can’t wait for the next book in the series. Also, since I haven’t read the Unrequited/Requited duet yet, I’m now super curious about Andy and West, and definitely looking forward to go back to that too.

4.5 stars. There’s a real "old-school Jesse" vibe to this book that I ate up.
We meet Orion and Jordan (who go to the same uni as Andy and West from my FAVOURITE Jesse - please run to read Unrequited if you haven't yet!!!).
Orion is closeted and has been in love with Jordan since the day they met. He's keeping this painful secret forever, because Jordan is straight.
One day, Orion gets sick, and Jordan nurses him back to health (there's a soup scene that made me swoon, I love soup in books as a romantic plot device, is that weird?) and in his feverish state, Orion spills his secret.
Jordan, at first shocked, decides he's going to support his best friend and will be the best wingman for Orion. This doesn't last long because, shocker, Jordan gets really jealous. Will these two idiots figure it out?? Read this lovely book to find out.
I really enjoyed how verrrry down bad they both were. The plot is straightforward but the writing hooked me in. This one was surprisingly low on angst, so it's an easy, fun read. The smut really worked for me. The scene before their first kiss was HOT HOT HOT.
Thank you Jesse and team for the ARC! Looking forward to the next in this series.

Silly boys… I liked it, but I didn’t love it. It reminded me of Poetry on ice in a way Jordan the character was written. (In the way that he was so confused at what’s happening and he doesn’t realise that he is actually falling in love and is smitten). But that other book is a bar, so it doesn’t hit the mark for me.
The story follows Orion, pining for his best friend Jordan. We get flashbacks from when they met at the age 14 and they were adorable. Orion is so scared to come out to his best friend Jordan, cause he is so so in love with him. When that finally happens Jordan went spiralling, absolutely bonkers! This book had this hilarious inner monologues, honestly I laughed quite a few times. I also love how this author builds a scene, I really like her writing style. 🌸

Ok, for context, I am a total simp here. I tried really hard to put on my objective and critical glasses, but Jesse pulled me in again. I resisted up until about the 30% mark and then it just turned into a fever dream for me.
What more can I say? Had pining and all the feels. I also wonder if Jesse wrote this for the fans, in particular the West and Andy parts, and all soup. 😂
The beginning felt a little over the top and melodramatic, otherwise it would have gotten a top tier rating from me.

Did Not Finish
September 16, 2026Thanks for the ARC opportunity ~ unfortunately I dnfed. Reading the synopsis I thought the main POV would be Jordan, the “straight” guy, but the book starts on Orion, the cute closeted gay guy who had a huge crush on his best friend and an existential crisis.
While I root for them, I couldn’t get into the story. It was light, surfing on heavy topic like being in the closest, being introvert, questioning his sexuality….
It was, unfortunately, not for me. After 40/50% I got bored. I don’t even think it’s a slow burn, it felt more like a one way crush. It becomes frustrating to read about Jordan POV and not having a hint of him seeing Orion more than a friend for so long. But like I said I did not finish the book so maybe I stopped just before the good part 🤷🏻♀️

This was an enjoyable, easy read with very likable characters — classic Jesse Reign. It’s not quite a four-star read for me, mostly because I am just not a huge fan of pining. There’s a reason Unrequited/Requited are the only Jesse Reign books I haven’t managed to bring myself to read yet.
Pining and angst are two romance emotions I can only enjoy in small doses. What can I say? I get too many feels, and the accompanying anxiety is unpleasant and basically the opposite of the escapism I am looking for when I gobble up my trashy man-on-man romances. There wasn’t actually that much angst here, thank God, so at least it wasn’t a double whammy. But there was a LOT of pining.
There were also whole-chapter flashbacks, which are another thing I don’t particularly love unless they are absolutely essential to the plot. Most of these weren’t. I understood why we needed some history between Jordan and Orion, but eventually I was like: yes, yes, he has loved this idiot forever. I GET IT. Please return me to the present.
That said, “he falls first, but he falls harder” is a trope I very much enjoy, and Jesse Reign pulled that part off beautifully. I genuinely wasn’t sure how she was going to sell Jordan’s bi-awakening because that man was SO DAMN STRAIGHT at the beginning. I was even worried that when they finally got together the sex might lack chemistry. Nope. Jordan’s awakening felt believable, and the chemistry worked.
I saw a couple of reviews questioning why Jordan could apparently tolerate Orion being with women but immediately lost his mind over the idea of him with a man. My interpretation was that, subconsciously, Jordan had always filed Orion away as straight, which meant Orion simply wasn’t available to him. The second he discovered Orion was attracted to men, some primitive part of his brain went: Oh. That’s MY man. Which, frankly, tracks.
I did have one continuity-ish moment that confused me. When Orion finally tells Jordan he’s gay, he talks about cruising and anonymous hookups. Maybe I misunderstood something earlier, but I had gotten the impression that Orion had only fairly recently come to terms with his sexuality and that gay porn might have been about as far as he had gotten. Apparently not! Good for him, especially considering what a fuckboi Jordan had been, but I was surprised enough that I actually stopped and wondered if I had missed something.
Speaking of Orion: you know how much that man loves Jordan very early in the book because he likes the sounds Jordan makes when he eats cereal. That is devotion. I personally don’t even like eating cereal in front of other people because something about the entire act of cereal eating offends me—the sounds, the spoon, the milk, the visual. All of it. So Orion tolerating it fondly is basically soulmate-level love as far as I’m concerned.
Jesse Reign also has a character type that I eat up every single time. “Golden retriever” doesn’t quite cover it. There’s a kindness to her golden retrievers that makes them almost otherworldly — men who could only possibly exist between the covers of a romance novel. Sweet without being spineless, affectionate without becoming infantilized. Give me one of those impossible men and apparently I will withstand quite a lot of pining.
She also remains deeply committed to giving at least one hero a perfect ass: muscular and round with just enough jiggle for the other man to lose his entire mind over it. I support this artistic choice wholeheartedly.
“Oh God, there’s your perfect ass. Just attached to you, like always.”
Poetry.
And speaking of Poetry on Ice: Robbie and Ant make a random cameo! I was delighted, although they are mentioned in a flashback scene, six years in the past, which bothers me for completely irrational reasons. My boys are living their best lives NOW. Do not put them in some historical Jesse Reign timeline like they’re characters from a bygone age.
Anyone who really disliked the prose style in Poetry on Ice will probably struggle with this one too. There’s a similar cadence to the internal monologue. The thoughts build. In short little bursts. Emphasizing the emotion. Until you really understand how desperate the narrator is. Really, truly understand it. Understand it to the molten core of the earth (<—That was my lame imitation.)
I actually like the style and barely even noticed it when I read Poetry on Ice because I vibed with that book so hard. But once I saw people criticizing it, I understood what they meant. It’s like somebody pointing out a verbal tic and suddenly it’s the only thing you can hear.
My one genuinely off-brand Jesse Reign moment was the scene with Jordan’s mother, when Orion tells her she’s “not like other moms” and she launches into a pedantic Chair of the Women’s History Department explanation of why that was a misogynistic thing to say. I love that Reign writes progressive male characters and makes it clear that these men didn’t emerge from a vacuum; they were raised by and surrounded by strong women. But she has done that before much more naturally. Robbie’s mother and sister in Poetry on Ice, for example, communicated exactly who they were without anyone delivering a speech about it. This scene felt stiff and a little sanctimonious in a way her writing usually doesn’t.
That said, I did appreciate her making the characters’ politics and values explicit, particularly in a queer romance. It didn’t need quite so much underlining for me, but I understood why she wanted it on the page and deeply respect her for doing it.
So: very likable men, convincing chemistry, an awakening that worked much better than I expected, Jesse Reign’s trademark impossibly kind golden retrievers and premium asses…all good. Just more yearning and backstory than my emotionally avoidant little romance-reader heart really wants.
A solid 3.5 stars.

I can never not read any of Jesse’s books
I really need to read more of this author’s books because this was so freaking good! This might be one of my top favorites by Jesse. I love books where one character has been in love with the other character pretty much their entire life.
Jordan and Orion were absolutely perfect for one another. Absolutely soul mates in my opinion. I loved how we also got their history of how they met and why they are the way they are. Super cute.
I love that Jordan made Orion’s first time so special that it would be utterly impossible to have a better time with anyone else.
Oh Jordan. Sweet, sweet, delusional Jordan. You became so jealous of the thought of Orion of even being with anyone. He starts to lose his absolute mind and I was here for it.
I loved how he even started to text his sisters for their advice and they laid it straight to him.
That first kiss between them was everything. Also, the car ride home from the club had me giggling. The cab driver and the bracelet had to be one of my favorite moments.
If you’re looking for a book where one MC has been in love with the other since their teenage years, the other gets super jealous, fun sibling chats, the best banter and just all the feelings, this book is so for you.
I need the next book sooner rather than later pretty please.
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.

3⭐️ ARC Review
Sometimes a book hits exactly right, and sometimes it just doesn’t quite connect with you, and unfortunately, Jealous Guy fell into the latter category for me. I love Jesse’s books and was really excited about the premise of this one. Childhood best friends, years of unrequited love, a little sexual awakening, and a jealous best friend finally realizing that maybe his feelings aren’t quite as platonic as he thought? On paper, this absolutely should have worked for me.
There were definitely things I enjoyed, especially Orion’s longtime love for Jordan and the history between them. I loved knowing that what began as a teenage crush grew into something much deeper as Orion got to know the person Jordan truly was. There are also some genuinely sweet moments between these two that show just how important they’ve always been to each other.
Where I struggled was with Jordan’s side of the story. For me, his jealousy often read less as the possessive, “you’re mine” kind of jealousy I was expecting and more as insecurity. Once Orion came out, Jordan suddenly seemed to view nearly every other queer man in their orbit as potential competition, men that Jordan had no problem with before Orion came out, and after a while that became more frustrating than fun for me.
I also wanted a little more emotional development in Jordan’s realization that his feelings for Orion had changed. There was plenty of attraction and jealousy, but I didn’t always feel the transition from lifelong friendship and newfound desire into romantic love. By the time Jordan finally understood what he was feeling and the declarations came, the payoff felt a little anticlimactic for me after all of the buildup.
That said, romance is incredibly subjective, and I can absolutely see this working for readers who love an oblivious best friend, sexual awakening, friends-to-lovers, and lots of jealousy. This one just wasn’t quite the hit for me that I hoped it would be.

ANDY AND FUCKING WEST.
Okay, ahem. So, I got this ARC while out on a work event so while I was trying to help players, I was also trying to read and the way I was just so excited to get back to my hotel and read! I DEVOURED THIS SHIT. DEVOURED IT.
I like him so much.
I like him so, so fucking much.
I like him so much that like is the wrong word to describe how I feel about him.
I fucking LOVED these two. Jordan and Orion have my entire fuckin heart. I loved seeing the younger versions of them and how they met, you instantly see Jordan being absolutely obsessed with taking up all of Orion's attention and time. He just never wants to be apart from his bestie and absolutely nothing changes when they get older. He's still demanding all his time and you can just seeeeee the jealousy when he doesn't get it.
You see hints of his obsession when Orion gets sick (which was fucking HILARIOUS, mind you). How he's so happy he can hug Orion and cuddle and snuggle him while Orion is passed out cold. THE NEEDLE SCENE THOUGH 😂🤣
When Orion finally comes out and tells Jordan that he's gay, Jesus Christ the man does NOT handle it well. Not due to homophobia or anything, nope. He realizes he's so angry about Orion coming out is that he had no idea. Orion kept this small secret from him and my god how he loses his shit at that thought. The dude literally goes around the house and searches his memories for any hint of another man that Orion might have brought home. He's lost the plot guys 🤣 He goes from HE NEEDS QUEER FRIENDS to this man has been hooking up like CRAZY IN OUR HOUSE. Legit like, he's been KISSING in a dark alley and such and then came home, LOOKED HIM IN THE EYE AND PRETENDED NOTHING MAJOR HAPPENED. Sir. SIR 😂 Dude is spiraling and going on Reddit to check out "gay guy's first sexual experiences." He then works himself up because he doesn't know Orion's preference. I enjoyed the "Andy's gay though and he's besties with West, so we're still good," and then freaks out because Andy is gay and Andy is "too good looking." PSHH. Like Andy would notice anyone else.
My heart hurt SO damn much for Orion after the first time, as he realizes the best thing to ever happen won't ever happen ever again. UGH. You can quickly see the jealousy coming back when Jordan starts asking him where he's been every time he goes out, he's tracking him on apps and gets annoyed when he brings up Andy OR West.
His wingman...ning? Nope. No. Dude does not pass go. Does not collect $100. Solid, epic FAIL.
The fucking nerve.
He has no way of knowing I'm Orion's wingman, not his boyfriend. We arrived together, we haven't spoken to anyone else, and we're standing close to each other. it's fucking rude to assume he can send us drinks.
THEN THE SISTER TEXTS.
Guys. Just go. Go run and grab this. Because you will love every fucking second.

This book was such a delight. I adore Jesse’s writing and this book was no exception. Orion and Jordan were both such charming and likable characters. This is such a well done friends to lovers with an oblivious bff who doesn’t recognize his constant need for closeness and attention is more than just friendship for waaaay too long ;) This book made me smile and swoon so many times. And who doesn’t love a book with pining? 💗💗
