Having worked in the movie and animation industry for a few years, Julia Proud has always written stories, but never actually published them. Until now! The first Julia Proud book from the Jazz Noir Collection is now available to buy! A novella set during the Prohibition Era, in the U.S. about a rookie detective working on his first murder case. You can also get to know the rookie detective as he was before becoming a cop in the short story A Good Car. If you want to know more about Julia Proud, check out her site : http://juliaproud.com/ And if you like the idea of challenging a writer to make up short stories around a crazy idea, phrase or a single word, than check out http://challengetheproud.com/the-proc....
This collection has a really interesting premise. Julia Proud made a challenge on Twitter. She let her followers offer a phrase and then vote on them. The winning phrase was used to inspire a short story that she would write in one day. Now, she has taken the stories and put them out as an e-book. Again, she is letting the readers vote on the short stories, The winning short story will be turned into a novel (or perhaps a series). The only catch is that the voting ends June 30, 2015. So, if you want to vote (and perhaps get a free book), hurry up.
I haven't heard which story won even though the voting has been over for a week or so now. But I guess it is time to look at the book as a normal collection of short stories. Now, the stories cover a fairly wide of genres. Some of the stories are more developed than others. I don't mean that in a bad way, just some went more in-depth to the characters and their world than others. It was like the difference between eating a meal or just a snack. Taking those facts into account, I can say that I liked some of the stories better than others. I feel this will be true for most people. I could appreciate the writing on all the stories but I am just more drawn to certain genres than others.
There should be something for everyone in this collection. While you can no longer vote on the stories, I still love this concept.
This is not just the work of the author but also the inventiveness and attention of the people who have challenged me to write around their prompts so out of respect for them and all their wonderful feedback and time, I dare to give this collection of short stories 5 stars.
If you are looking for short, quick reads that will immediately transport you into a unique and entertaining setting, this is the book for you.
Stories vary in genre, from SF to adventure and crime thrillers. Some stories round off nicely finishing the plot with a neat bow, others leave more of an opened ending.
The main reason behind the stories with an opened ending is that this collection is not just here to entice the imagination of the readers, but also to introduce them to the Challenge The Proud event.
Anyone can vote for the story they'd like to see continued into a full-blown novel. And, moreover, you can vote on multiple stories so there's no 'hard' decision to be made. The story with the most votes by 30th of June 2015 will be declared the winner and I, Julia Proud will begin writing a novel based on that story and finish it as soon as possible.
A great collection of short stories Challenge the Proud is a great collection of short stories with a variety of genres. It's a really neat concept - Julia asked her Twitter followers to give her random sentences. She picked 32 of them and created 30 short stories based on each of the sentences chosen. There's something for nearly anyone - from a spunky princess with somewhat inept but loveable sidekicks to vampires, or a fish detective to a detective whose Twitter followers are being killed, there is a story for just about any taste.
What makes this collection even better is that you can vote for your favorite story and have it turned into a novel. Of course, there's only a couple more days left to vote, but the collection of stories is worth checking out, even if you can't vote for a novel.
Note: I only gave this 4 stars because there were some editing issues, but they were minor and didn't interfere with Julia's knack at spinning incredible and diverse tales.
This collection of short stories is a wonderful take on single lines of Twitter dialogue. The themes and genres jump around wildly, as they should for where the inspiration came from. To use one line and create a story around it can be difficult, and Julia provides many great examples of infusing that simple idea into the many themes.
My own personal tweet was used for "Gateway To Hell". I said "The gateway to hell in Derweze is lovely this time of year" and she converted it to a unique love triangle story with hints of a supernatural twist.
Julia Proud really shows her enthusiasm towards interacting with her readers, and there couldn't be a better example of it than in this collection.
