This was unlike anything I've read before. I do like the steampunk aesthetic, but don't really read steampunk books. But I do like thrillers, so I was excited to try something new. The world in this book was interesting and well written. I especially liked how vampires were represented here. The murder mystery part was cool, and made me think of an old fashioned game of clue. Thaddeus is a strange protagonist. I really liked him at the beginning, and felt sympathy for him after reading about his past. But the further the story went, the more unhinged and immoral he seemed. Definitely a different read, but an enjoyable one. I received a free copy of this story and write this review voluntarily.

First, thank you MJ for allowing me to beta read this wonderful book.

A Mystery at Hughes Manor is an absolute joy to read. Set mainly in an alternate Victorian-era London accentuated with a (relatively light) assortment of fantasy elements - notably, some varieties of mythical creatures, as well as "metal-mind" automata (through which some contemporary issues are cleverly threaded into MJ's writing) - the story follows Thaddeus Nigel Coombs, an upwardly-mobile ruffian-turned-academic striving to fit into gentle society.
Being a thriller, by its nature the plot is somewhat difficult to discuss without spoilers; suffice to say that it's fantastically twisty, and MJ's vivacious, driving prose positively crackles with energy, pulling the reader along relentlessly. Her use of language is so well-suited to her story; it perhaps tends toward the purple at times, but this only serves to enhance the Victorian flair of the world (and anyway, my tastes incline this way as well).
The characters are lively and well-realized: particular standouts include the sensitive, honourable, yet misguided composer Oliver; Maysilee Whittaker, dogged and loyal and biting (if not exactly the sharpest knife); and Mina, Thaddeus' stone-faced blue-blooded ex-fiancée. MJ deserves particular praise for her deft handling of this group - not only in managing her sizeable cast, but in her portrayal of the dynamics of panic, suspicion, leadership, and deception.
Thaddeus is the real highlight though, and he is an incredible creation: charming, clever, hilarious, with a thoroughly human past and endless hidden depths that are revealed to the reader with perfectly controlled pacing.
This is truly a remarkable debut. And while it does stand well on its own, I was absolutely thrilled to learn that MJ has sequels planned; I plan to read everything she writes going forward as soon as possible.

Where do I even begin? I’m not a huge binge reader and finishing a book in a week is FAST for me but I’ve only done that with two other books in my ENTIRE life. Until now. Once I hit chapter 9, this book was finished within that same NIGHT.

If you love steampunk and dialogue that is faithful to the era, witty and clever then KEEP READING! This book has the murder mystery elements reminiscent of Knives Out (especially the Glass Onion film), Clue, Abraham Lincoln: The Vampire Hunter (this movie is better than you might think), A Haunting in Venice, and supernatural elements to make this story well rounded in genres. The world feels real and believable even with all these elements at play. And the characters? Even more so. The dialogue, the NAMES, the manner of dress fits this world building beautifully! M.J. has truly created a cast of colorful characters (18 in total and no they are not difficult to keep up with at all). She is truly a puppet master when it comes to introducing these characters in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming.

Onto the plot… whatever you think is going to happen… you’re wrong. I love a good murder mystery but I love them even more when there’s a plot twist at the end that makes you think “there’s no way I would’ve ever seen this coming!” And this story most certainly achieved that. I’m not a big fan of re reading fiction but I will most definitely be re reading this book because of that twist and the clues you can pick up on early on in the re read! 😆

Not much more I can say without spoiling this wonderfully crafted story, but I did gasp audibly at the end of chapters 8, 9, and 13. Phenomenal writing. Phenomenal world and characters. THE PLOT TWIST IS TOP TIER. And I am not exaggerating when I say this book was in my top three reads of 2026. You will not regret reading M.J.’s amazing work of literature.

Whoa, what a wild ride! This was just, such a twisted adventure.

If there's one thing I want to say right out the gate, it's that Wehrli is an incredibly strong writer. This is an impressive debut. I caught myself marveling at their handling of so many lines within fully upside down situations - lines that pinpointed shifty emotions, visceral descriptions, and hilariously sarcastic musings. The writing really draws you inside the story; the descriptive powers on display are a true delight. As well, the symphony of characters managed smoothly is an achievement.

Without giving too much of the mystery away, I also want to note that Wehrli can write the hell out of monsters - plural. I was shocked, fascinated, repulsed, surprised, heartache-y, and conflicted with each turn of the story. The end of the dinner party was brilliantly done. Bravo.

Such a wonderfully dark and riotous tale. I absolutely hope there's a followup because the stage is definitely set for one delightfully insane story of power and revenge.

It was a pleasure to be an ARC reader.

As a big fan of mystery, vampire stories, and murder dinner parties, I absolutely devoured A Mystery at Hughes Manor. While the dinner party and murder do not take place until close to the half way mark of the novel, the set up to it really established the characters, setting, and prejudices needed for the reader to be shocked and awed in the second half. I enjoyed every twist and turn as the mystery unfolded, especially the allusions to Dracula which helped build anticipation and establish character expectations.

I am sure I will be recommending this novel to friends for years to come.

* Thank you to the author for the ARC and my honest review *

Immaculate.

I don't even want to say that it's predictable in it's direction, but I could see the tale coming together hauntingly. This was a great murder mystery. Once I hit a certain point, I couldn't put the book down.

Damn fine debut novel.

Chilling and atmospheric!

Wow did I ever need a Mystery Thriller in my life.

There is something to be said when a book from a genre you've never faced before pulls you in and keeps you hostage like this one. M.J. does a fantastic job of luring you into the world of A Mystery at Hughes Manor: from the refreshing detail of the cuisine to the description of the settings. Thaddeus is a character I cannot stop thinking about. His--and the others--character archs are a wild ride. (I had to whip out the hand-over-the-bottom-half-of-the-page to stop my eyes from jumping to spoiling twists no less than three times on this sucker. And each withdrawal of that hand only left my jaw dropped.)

This was perfectly spooky and best enjoyed with a warm beverage and a lit candle.

I could see this one becoming a yearly autumn reread for its perfectly eerie vibes.

Bravo.

A gothic, steampunk murder mystery with a closed circle setting and a supernatural twist. What can go wrong!

Wow, what a fantastic debut! This book is sooo good. It would make a perfect thriller movie!

I was holding my breath while reading. The tension is so good and the gothic atmosphere is amazing. The Victorian and steampunk clothes are perfect in this story.

I really liked that the book starts with Thaddeus's backstory. You get a feel for what kind of person he is before the dinner party even starts.

There are quite a few characters at the party, but I found it easy to follow the story. There are so many secrets among the characters and the writing keeps you guessing as you try to figure out what's really going on. You think you know who or what is killing the dinner party guests. But by the end, I wasn't so sure anymore. Love it!

"The occational flash of lightning and thunder shattered the heavens, eerily illuinating Hughes Manor"

"With a bone- chilling howl, the room rapidly darkened and the air grew thick with fog"

And the supernatural twist… so creepy! I love it. I hope there will be a book two and this book is coming home to me.

Thank you so much M.J Wehrli for giving me this opportunity to arc read your book.

The best mart of A MYSTERY AT HUGHES MANOR is how quickly you get pulled into the story. A steampunk-era dinner party quickly turns into a murder mystery. The whodunnit aspect is fantastic, especially when a Vampir comes into play.

AMAHM is all about the atmosphere. M.J. quickly establishes the tone of the book, which is steeped in steampunk coolness with a MCC who may or may not be a good guy. M.J. spends the first half of the book introducing us to the characters that will be part of this murder mystery dinner, and each character could carry an entire book themselves. It's a bouquet of a few of the most unique and dramatic people that have been invited to this dinner party, and they all live up to their reputations.

The entire story feels like an old school black and white movie, with a twists being revealed at the exact right time. Just when you think you have someone figured out, they go and prove you wrong.

It's a cozy story, letting the reader live in Victorian London for a while. I found myself enjoying the steampunk vibes, especially how M.J. described the technology and academic focuses of everyone in the story.

Overall, it's a cozy mystery that's perfect for crunchy leaf season!

This was my first tiptoe into the steampunk genre, and as a horror aficionado, I enjoyed the vampire aspect of the story. Thaddeus was such a frustrating character, alternating between brilliant researcher, villain, and petulant man child. He behaved so inconsistently and deserved his fate. I’m just not sure what mystery was involved in Hughes Manor as the reader knows precisely what is going on the whole time… like a moth on a wall, lol.

Overall this book was an enjoyable read. As an independently published book, I applaud the author and her editor for delivering a well edited and professional book with attention to detail.

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

First of all, thank you MJ for letting me beta read!

This book is amazing. Easily one of my top reads in recent memory, if not ever. Thaddeus is a fully formed character, he feels incredibly real and so do all the other characters who appear. The twists and turns the book makes are so unexpected and so wild that I could not put it down. I literally read it in two sittings and needed to calm myself down when it was over. I will be rereading. I can't recommend this book enough.

Wow, wow, wow!

I love a story about the unraveling of rich socialites as much as the next person, but this book was a breath of fresh air. The writing, the characterization, the twists, were all so artfully done. One character in particular reads like the most narcissistic toxic ex you've ever had (positive). This is like Clue meets Nosferatu (wild comparisons, I know, but that's what makes it so unique!).

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read it, MJ! I would love to read more of your future works.

This book is perfect for this time of year, a creepy mystery that ramps up the horror as it goes along. We get quite a bit of setup and flashback to really get a feel for what is to come. And then the rest is a locked door murder mystery where we delve into how a group responds to a monster and as we unravel their stories, we’re left wondering if the monster isn’t actually among them after all.

If you enjoy mystery and delving into a character’s psychology, I recommend this one.

Thank you so much to M.J. Wehrli for this advanced reader copy of her debut novel!

*Rating: 3.75

A Mystery at Hughes Manor has all the genre elements I usually gravitate towards - mystery, the supernatural, gothic, atmospheric, and incredible writing that kept me turning the page.

I was also introduced to the "steampunk" subgenre in this book, which always intrigued me, but I'm still figuring out if I would actively seek it out again. Not due to the story or writing! Strictly based on do I even like the juxtaposition?

This kept me on my toes, but I stopped short of rounding up because I have to admit this one might have gone over my head. The cast of characters were flushed out and interesting, but for some reason I couldn't keep them straight in my head which I admit might be a ME problem.

And the mystery was mystery-ing for me until close to the end because I was expecting more of a reveal or plot twist. I will say the true mystery for me was a certain character 's development. Which might have been the whole point?

Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to book #2 because the ending made me go full circle and wanting to find out what happens!

I don't normally read this kind of thing but I loved it. The world building is immersive and compelling and I was hooked from the start. Nothing is what it seems and everyone is fashionable. It is everything you could ever want from a steampunk-ish mystery thriller. I loved it and can't wait for more from this author!

A unique twist on the murder mystery dinner party genre that I devoured in a single day. This book is definitely a must-read for lovers of mysteries and gothic literature. Fans of classic horror (Frankenstein, Dracula, etc.), murder mystery authors such as Agatha Christie, and even fans of the Knives Out series will find a lot to appreciate in this book. It incorporates light steampunk themes mixed with the traditional Victorian gothic, creating a rich and moody atmosphere. One of the aspects that makes it unique is its presentation of traditional supernatural forces. So many books in the last two decades have tried so hard to create a unique angle for anything supernatural that we (as readers) almost expect something unexpected. The return to tradition in this story was, contrary to what you would think, a pleasantly unexpected surprise, and I believe the best choice for this story as it deepens the reader’s immersion into the setting. It makes it truly feel like an old-fashioned story from the time period.

Additionally, the character development is masterful, continuing right up until the very end of the book. It is definitely a story that you need to go into with no preconceived notions; that being said, what I loved most about the character development is that the why - why did the character make that decision? what was their motivation? etc. - is up to interpretation. There is enough evidence in the text for us to see plainly who the characters are, and at the same time, two people could read this story and come to two completely different, but equally valid, conclusions about each character’s implied motivations. For that reason it’s a story that bears rereading, and would be an excellent book to choose for discussing in a book club or reading group.

I would love to rave about the plot, but it’s hard to do so without accidentally giving anything away. What I will say is that although the story leans into classic themes and tropes, there is more than one thread throughout that is undeniably contemporary. Any modern reader, even young adults, will be able to recognize and identify with the central conflict of the story and see themselves mirrored in at least one of the main characters. The author also does a great job at trusting the reader to follow their path, without over-explaining or info dumping. Hints, clues, and plot points are expertly threaded throughout the story, always drawing the reader forward without ever condescending to that reader.

For all the reasons stated above, this book is like classic literature come alive for a new generation - complex, unrushed, riveting, and an extremely entertaining read. I’ve already decided I will reread this book on the next stormy autumn evening with a lit candle and mug of hot tea to complete the setting, and will be sure to gift it to friends and family so they can enjoy it as well.

Definitely looking forward to the next book from this author!

“You may, if you wouldn’t mind.” Thaddeus held out his worn brown overcoat to the metallic valet, along with his topper and suitcase. The unfeeling machine didn’t even spare a glance at the poor quality of his clothing, simply following its commands as another automaton—a waiter, this time—appeared and gestured for him to follow.
Not a speck of judgment, he noted. The world might be better off with more Metal-Minds.

A Mystery at Hughes Manor by M.J. Wehrli - or how to fall in love with yet another genre.

First of all, let me thank the author for the ARC and for trusting me with her book!

This is absolutely not my usual or go-to read, but I might as well just add mysteries to my favourites after this. It was decorative and lyrical yet fast-paced and I couldn't put it down. If I'd had time, this would have easily been an afternoon read.

I can't really say much without revealing too much, it is a book you need to go into blind. But I can definitely say the writing matches the era and I profoundly enjoyed the dresses and furniture descriptions, especially once we were at the manor.

One of my favourite aspects of this story is the main character, Thaddeus, and the way the author slowly reveals him to us, with his true self only really shining through at the very end. I cannot sing enough praises for how well his arc was written!

The supernatural comes alive in this story and what I enjoyed the most was the raw portrayal of the creatures and their history. I probably should have been terrified but I couldn't help smiling while reading those parts.

And the best thing about this book? The hints and clues are planted so well throughout the story you feel so fulfilled when everything finally clicks.

HOWEVER...
I found a few of the supporting characters a bit dull, but at the same time I am aware developing all of them wouldn't make much sense and would unnecessarily make the book longer.

All in all, loved this book so much! I want to read the 2nd one right away!

🔎 ARC Review 🩸

"She wouldn't look him in the eyes, instead focusing on her clasped hands before her, but the expression on her face told him that he was really in for it -- he could practically hear the verbal bullets clicking into her chamber."

This was a really fun read for this time of the year! It had plenty of suspense, spookiness, and murder!

I liked the dialogue from the characters and could well imagine their accents as I was reading along. There were different personalities and people from different segments of society which I enjoyed.

It felt like a steady build throughout the story and didn't end up whipping through the ending too fast. It was enjoyable to sit in the scary pieces and just watch everyone's reactions and their ways to get themselves out of harm's way.

I did think it took quite awhile, nay too long, to get around to the dinner party itself. I think the background story could've been established in perhaps 20 pages. It was either rehashed or we were meeting people or doing things that didn't seem drastically relevant to the story from the get-go and from looking back on it.

I would've preferred more time on the dinner party introduction scene. We meet SO many people - just under 20. It was really hard to know who was who and keep track of the different groupings throughout the remainder of the book. So, if I could change one thing, it'd be to swap out about 20 pages from the beginning to the dinner party and really give us more about the participants.

For a debut, I think this is a great start! There was good tension, the cast of characters was nicely put together, and this delivers paranormal spook wonderfully!

If you like murder whodunits, are looking for a spooky Halloween read, or like books with isolated locations (think The Decagon Murders), you may like this book.

A most enjoyable read. I particularly liked the steampunk vibes and aura of gas lamps and Edison lights, the metal men and horseless buggies, and fog and rain that pervaded especially the earlier parts of the story.

The story is told from the point of view of Thaddeus Coombs, a smart, driven, and savvy man. Though one meets Thaddeus and some of this colleagues while they're out on an expedition, they soon return to town for a reunion of Easton University alumni. The civilised meeting of minds at Hughes Manor is soon disrupted not only by old jealousies and drama, but by murder, and the evening gets worse from there. It was nail biting stuff at the end and I thoroughly recommend this story for people who like a country-house murder.

I will put a spoiler line here to mask my musings on Thaddeus.

Truly well done and I look forward to more from this author.

I read an advance reader copy and am posting an honest, voluntary review.

What a fun read! I’m not sure if the author intends to continue writing in this world, but there is a great foundation of steampunk built. I would have loved to see more of it within this story.

Thaddeus is a world explorer whom we meet during an expedition researching vampires. He and his crew all receive mysterious invitations to a classmate’s manor, which leads us to the titular event.

A sudden violent death throws Thaddeus and other guests into a bevy of accusations, suspicion, and terror; especially as more people die throughout the night.

As the story unfolds, we learn more about Thaddeus and his intense desire for control over his reputation and the situation. Careful curation of his supernatural knowledge, one-sided histories, and endless defensiveness reveals layers of Thaddeus’ motivations. We learn that a vampire may not be the only monster in the Holmes Manor.

Thaddeus as an unreliable narrator was a fun twist to the story, and the vampire is utterly terrifying. Thaddeus’ character development did feel a bit repetitive by the end, but the epilogue was an exciting way to add context to the conclusion.

Thank you to the author for the ARC.

I'm a Balkan girl who has always loved mysteries and the supernatural, so this book was basically a checklist of all my likes. I am so happy to have had a chance to read the ARC. It was a one-day read for me, I was extremely invested in the story.

After several months of exploring Serbia in search of vampires, Thaddeus returns to London to share his findings. There, he is invited to a fancy dinner party, along with his former classmates, all of whom are now in different stages of their lives and careers. Then, a murder occurs, leading to the survivors obsessing over immediately airing everyone's dirty laundry in search of the killer. We slowly learn about the characters' pasts, their relationships and opinions of each other, and get a deeper insight into Thaddeus' life.

This book is very fast-paced, it's a fun and quick read, and it has a perfect mix of murder-mystery, drama, and the supernatural. I can't believe this book made me feel the things it did when it comes to Thaddeus,

A Mystery at Hughes Manor is part vampire hunting, part mystery. I really enjoyed the vampire. It is based on the "original" vampire lore, certainly not the sparkly, sexy, or handsome vampires of recent date.
It is a well researched, nicely written book. I am often disappointed because there are historical missteps, which was not the case here. The author really made an effort to get into the time she is writing about. I also enjoyed her style, not too descriptive but missing nothing.
Her MC is rather complicated. He seems to be one thing, then you change your mind, then again. You really have to pay attention to him throughout the book. You might easily miss some important detail; I know I did. The rest of the characters are maybe not as fleshed out, probably because they are seen through his eyes and motivations.

I was unaware that this is the first book of a series, so I was wondering about the ending. Now I will look forward to the next installment.

This is an unbiased review of an ARC given to me by the author.

How do I rave about this book the way I want to without spoilers? M.J. Wehrli succeeds in giving everything that was promised and then some.
It was gory but not so bad someone who is squeamish would take too much issue. Steampunk meets the supernatural beautifully, setting up a gorgeous world you can't help want to know more about.
A morally questionable main character you will either love or hate, possibly both(I am firmly both) and side characters who are just developed enough for you to hope they make it out(or maybe don't in some cases) By chapter 8 I knew there was no sleeping until I finished the book. For the mystery aspect it did keep my on my toes, the only thing I saw coming I would have been upset if it didn't happen so I can't fault that, I also go into a mystery trying to figure everything out and for scenes to keep surprising me is always welcome.
This book was such a solid well written read, an easy 4.5 stars. Thank you so much for the advanced copy.

This was a really interesting story to read. Things become muddied and lines blurred the further through you get and you are left wondering who is good, who is bad and who is to blame.

I really liked the atmospheric setting of the dinner party for old acquaintances. It felt like a cross between Dracula and an Agatha Christie mystery which I really liked.

My only downside to the story was that the murder didn't happen until about half way through and I wanted to learn more about each character at the dinner party and explore their feelings throughout the events more.

Thanks to MJ Werhli for an eARC of this book, all opinions are my own.

If you're looking for gothic, true gothic, look no further. In the same vein as Frankenstein and Dracula, this book explores themes of man's inner monster.

Thaddeus isn't likeable.

Mina isn't likable.

Mayslee isn't likable.

Oliver isn't- just kidding, I loved Oliver.

With all these flawed and realistic people, though, you can't help but look on helplessly as they dig their own grave.

I loved the flow of Wehrli's language. She keeps the feel of something written in 1888, but don't worry- she is an expert with suspense.

All in all, this steampunk monster-hunting thriller is fantastic!

Thank you M.J. Wehrli for the chance to read this book as an ARC. This review is honest and voluntary.

This was overall a fun read and I did enjoy it! The book took a while to get going and I am a reader who prefers to be plopped in the middle of the action. I find it is harder to get engaged in books that start at a slower pace. The characters were fine, but some felt a bit one-dimensional for my taste. I know that is more of a personal preference than anything.

For those looking for your next steampunk mystery, I think this one is worth checking out!

This book is BANANAS and I mean that in the most flattering way. It is hilarious and the character development is top tier.
I finished this in less than a day because it is SO fast paced and the mystery built incredibly well.
The steampunk elements are threaded in perfectly and I loved the supernatural element to the whole thing!

This was an advanced copy received with thanks from the author, for an unbiased review.

Whatever I was expecting, this wasn't it. Light steampunk (almost mentioned in passing), supernatural investigations, and a broken engagement, all in the life of our explorer, Thaddeus. While I disliked him as a character - in fact I found it hard to like any of the characters - the story definitely got me hooked after what felt like a slow start.

Wonderfully written and totally immersive in the 1880’s time period with a steampunk atmosphere.

I recommend for anyone into steampunk, supernatural and spooky manor house settings. The characters were so well written and the unfolding of the main character’s arc was excellent even though it made me dislike him.
The characters we dislike are usually the most memorable.

Looking forward to the next book in the series!!
