In 2015, J.J. Sin finally decided to put her Math, East Asian Studies, and English Specialist degree from the University of Toronto to better use and started writing. As an avid reader, with a love for poetry and Chinese idioms, she has enjoyed a wide variety of genres including the classics, science fiction, fantasy and historical romance. After much persuasion (read: coercion and blackmail) from her spouse, she decided to publish her work. She does have to admit, writing stories is definitely more interesting than copywriting, but please don't tell her spouse she said so. She currently resides in Canada.
I’m not sure how I felt about . . . um, all of that. I’m not sure I vibed with the writing style mostly, because it was choppy and difficult to parse POV sometimes. I liked the story but it was so wonky that I kept getting drawn out of it. There just wasn’t much to keep me engaged and invested. It needs so much work to feel completed, and not just because I thought it was supposed to be a prequel. Apparently, it’s the first book in the series, and they’re all about different worlds? So, like, you’re telling me that was it? That’s all we get? I beg thy finest godsdamned pardon? No, king. No. I do not accept that. I will say there’s potential, but I won’t say I’m good with it.
This is overall quite well-written. However, there were times when flashbacks felt disjointed, and generally speaking, there was a lot of story that could’ve been written to flesh out the characters and the world more. Sometimes it felt like entire scenes were missing, leaving it somewhat unfinished. There were also some scenes that happened only for plot, and maybe seemed out of nowhere or out of character. The premise was good and the writing style was up my alley, so a solid 3 stars from me. I’d read something by them again if they wrote something longer!
I enjoyed this book and I am going g to give it a 4/5. It was not too short but just enough to be interesting. Rei and Haruki have trained to fight demons together. They hold their mission above all even love. There can be no emotional entanglements between them. But the two men fall in love and risk everything. The demons are trying to g to take over and they must make some hard decisions.
It's been a minute since I've read a book that has hooked me from page one. When I say I'm obsessed, I'M OBSESSED! The action, pacing, world building, and chemistry were off the charts. It gives me vibes of The Untamed, Word of Honor, and The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty but is in a league of it's own. I'm so ready for the next book. Is it November yet?
The release date for "Fallen" says Fall 2026, it is now October and the book has not been released yet... We are well past the fall equinox so how much more fall do we have to get before the book is released?!?!?
Terrific writing, the battle descriptions had me holding my breath. Characters were drawn well and even tho this is a short book, the work building was excellent.
