Meet Me After Life
Ever had your date bombed by a hot ghost?
As it turns out, living in a fantasy world isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Miller V. Brown has collected a plethora of credentials over the years — professional orphan, mediocre journalist, pathetic lowly mortal… then of course there’s her most recently acquired title ‘victim of immortal gentrification’. Inner city taxes have been raised for humans. So, Miller has to move.
She never expected the mortal subsidised housing program to be perfect. Her new house is next to a haunted forest overrun with demonic chickens, for starters. And then there’s the talking tree with an attitude problem who happens to be her neighbour. But as Miller begins to acquaint herself with her strange new surroundings, she finds friendship and community along the way. Life isn’t perfect but she’s managing. Until she discovers her new lodgings are inhabited by the haughty (albeit unquestionably hot) poltergeist, Walker.
With nowhere else to go, and Walker intent on making her life miserable, Miller’s only option is to resort to supernatural warfare. But somewhere amidst possessed poultry attacks and failed exorcisms, Miller and Walker unravel each other’s defences. An unlikely friendship and undeniable attraction makes Miller question everything she knows about acceptance and belonging.

What a fun and surprisingly deep paranormal romance this was! I found our FMC Miller to be so relatable, never knowing what to say and feeling like either the world or yourself is sabotaging all your efforts.
Meet Me After Life is a slow-burn romance about an orphan who just wants to belong and be wholly loved by someone, but this pesky ghost keeps interfering with all her dates! 👀
It was fun because the world was fantastical, filled with talking trees and possessed chickens, and the plot twist changed the game. Oh, and chapter 11 was hilarious.
It was deep because what do you mean I have 20+ quotes highlighted that were very insightful, like this:

And finally, it was beautiful because I loved the two main characters and their banter together. They were perfect for each other.
If you love your stories a little nutty, with a relatable, hot mess of an FMC and a very hot MMC who loves to… let’s say, prank you, then you’ll really enjoy this story!

If you loved B K Borison's GOOD SPIRITS and GRIM TIDINGS, I've just found your next fav read with Anneka-Rose Burrell's MEET ME AFTER LIFE.
This book was a delight from start to finish! A disaster human, a sassy ghost, and the house they're both sharing... I knew this was a guaranteed good time from the first page. The characters feel believable with layered personalities and character flaws that make them extremely endearing. I especially loved Miller's character and really connected to her.
The author has a wicked sense of humour and had me laughing out loud at multiple points! The story was fresh and engaging and I LOVED all the different elements of the paranormal world. All the different creatures and spirits created a rich and engaging atmosphere and reminded me of Fantastic Beasts in a way. Can't write this review without mentioning the possessed chickens.... because wtf. SO funny.
I think romance lovers will eat this up! The perfect read for this Halloween season.

Gosh I absolutely loved this book!
All sass & quick whit mixed with heart & soul made this book just a beautiful story.
Miller, what a sassy queen. She’s a girl that has always had the world against her and now she has to deal with Walker, a ghost that is annoyingly handsome & well plain annoying.
Miller and Walker together were perfection, I loved their slow burn & constant back and forth.
The side characters were really a highlight for me , everyone needs besties like Lavender and Delilah!
I really wanted more, sorry I’m greedy. I didn’t want their story to be over 🤭

This book is funny, touching, paranormal, cosy adjacent (as a non cosy lover), absurd (affectionate) and I think it will definitely be a comfort read for me.
Meet Me After Life brings us straight into a world full of every type of paranormal race and creature imaginable, and I could never predict what would be mentioned next (bee shifter is new to me 😂) with the most unhinged yet matter of fact lore (the bee shifter males die after s*x and reanimate a year later 🤣) and actually, this might be the best kind of world building, especially for this kind of unserious world, just random lore drops whenever a new species is introduced.
And the characters - Miller is one of those girls that you just want to hug - she is doing her best but wow, what a life she has had, and what she has persevered through - her picture is in the dictionary next to resilient! She is funny but also a little bit lost, a little bit broken down, and a little bit of a walking disaster (in the best way).
And Walker - please don't ever sign me up for this kind of haunting, I swear his brand of practical jokes would have had steam coming out of my ears within about 3 minutes and I'd be seriously considering just burning the place down. Don't mistake me though, he was sweet and endearing too, more so once he stopped trying to scare Miller away.

I knew this book would have me cackling the second I saw “no AI you fucks” in the small print in the very beginning of the book 😂
Miller is an absolutely tragic human being existing in a weird world, and her quick wit and many one liners had me laughing out loud many, many times. This is MY kind of humour. I’ve been entertained!
Her insecurities and summed up feelings were very real and relatable, especially her avoidance of them and using humour to deflect. So real for such a funny read.
Walker wasn’t around all that much in the first half of the book, and that’s really my only complaint. We seemed to miss the part where these characters traverse from heckling each other to suddenly having feelings… But I shall not spoil the ending and it all makes sense. A little bit of fuckery was afoot, in a good way.
I am left with a few questions though, like how did they both die? Where is it exactly they ended up in the epilogue?
For such an entertaining read, the ending really was heartfelt and I’ve definitely taken away the greater meaning of this book. Life is short, and be nothing except your truest self.

I’ve just finished this book today and I need someone to talk to about it! What in the name of Lavender and her spiked hot chocolates happened? The confusion is where the answer lies though (I think), if you really ponder the characters and the ending - so you have to read it to understand 😉
Let’s start at the beginning then, which also happens to be the end of the book. So if this doesn’t help you to understand the kind of wild, batshit crazy ride that you’re about to embark on, nothing will.
I loved our FMC Miller. She’s just out here trying her best; a people pleaser extraordinaire, unlovable (according to her), but her determination shines on. Her wit and dry humour, second to none. If this woman was my friend, I would consider myself lucky. She is such a helper and an advocate, whilst herself being in the depths of, well, you’ll have to read the book (sorry, no spoilers!)
The banter between her and the MMC Walker was fantastic, and I particularly enjoyed the hauntings. All of the side characters are integral to the story and even the mean ones are loveable and have a purpose - there’s a message in that!

I really struggled with my rating for this book but I think I settled on 3.5 stars. I was laughing, cringing, sad, and embarrassed. This book is goofy. Straight up crazy at times and perfect for anyone with an overactive imagination.
So the book starts with the epilogue and girllllll that made me nervous. And after reading everything, I do wish it was at the end. I felt like the end just wasn't satisfying enough without it and seemed rushed.
Overall I would say this is a fun book and surprisingly profound and heartbreakingly sad at times. The fmc, Miller, can be obnoxious, but she can also be very relatable. The world has let Miller down and she is drowning. This book does cover real issues in a truly ridiculous setting.

There were a few things that were hard to get past, thus bringing down the rating. The cringe worthy, second hand embarrassment was TOUGH, as well as the over the top millennial humor.
HOWEVER, there were some really great moments, advice, and self-realizations. The author did a really good job on explaining things many people feel, but have a hard time putting into words.
"I think one of life's greatest tragedies is that even if you do have lots of friends and lots of family, no one ever really knows you. No one ever really understands. Because there's so much depth to a soul- it's not something you can sink to the bottom of."
"A person is so much more than words can ever really capture."

What a silly, beautiful, insane, hilarious, wonderful story. Yes, this is a paranormal rom com, but it's so much more than that. It's a story about life and the human experience, and it makes light of how fucking HARD it is while still being so deeply relatable.
When I say silly, I mean chickens dancing to Britney Spears and the next second touching on themes of grief and loss. Somehow it works perfectly.
Our FMC Miller is so relatable it hurts. She's navigating feeling like too much and not enough at the same time, plus abandonment issues, and I felt seen. And our MMC Walker? The perfect ghost lover. If I'm ever not in love with a ghost MMC, check my pulse because I'm dead.
The found family is SO good. I truly loved every single character in this book. The lightness and humor balance the heavier themes so well that you almost forget they're there until you're crying into your coffee.

Wow! First of all congrats to the beautiful Anni! A sarcastic, old soul, gorgeous and a humour like none other!!
This was such a fun, quirky and completely unique read! The whole concept was really cool and I loved how much humour was woven through the supernatural chaos. (Wink see what I did there!)
Miller and Walker’s dynamic was such a highlight and I really enjoyed their relationship develop throughout the story. Behind all the witty banter and extremely funny dry sense of humour I found there were some really important themes and messages surrounding finding your people and opening yourself up.
And that ending! 🥲 After so much laughing throughout at the witty banter and many funny one-liners, I was not prepared for how bittersweet and emotional it would feel. Such a lovely balance of funny, quirky and heartfelt making this such a great paranormal romcom! Really enjoyed it!!

This was SUCH a good book. I was definitely not expecting the twists that came throughout the book, but I loved all the characters and all the development that Miller went through. It was a great dive into the feeling that you're not good enough but coming to realize that you are perfect for the people that love you. Especially if you're in a situation like Miller who tends to always see the best in everyone except herself. Tbh the Hardy stuff kinda threw me off and I wish there was a little more regarding his involvement and his presence entirely BUT overall it was a great book, and it came together perfectly. (This is a voluntary review from an ARC I received!)

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC! I applied because I wanted more ghost romances and the plot sounded quite good.
I think this was the weirdest book I´ve ever read. And I don´t necessarily mean that as a negative thing but wow... I´m not sure what to think. This might contain some spoilers but I have to address some things. Otherwise it would not be an honest review. So beware if you want to go into this totally blind. The release is also around the corner, so I think I can write a more detailed review for it being an ARC.
First of all the world building was not explained well enough for my taste. We get thrown into this strange fantasy world full of weird creatures I had problems imagining in my head. I was not sure what I expected and while this was modern (phones and cars) it was not really clear what kind of setting this is. It´s hard to be immersed in a world I don´t really understand. It was like the author just expected us to. I mean just as an example - FMC Millers neighbor is a tree named Lavender. But how does she look like? Where exactly does she live? It was hard for me to grasp the concept.
The writing style was surely different - and again I don´t mean this in a negative way but it clearly will not be for everyone. I´m sure a lot of readers will love it but for me personally it was a litte too confusing and all over the place. Being in Millers head was surely a trip and I had difficulty following her sometimes chaotic thoughts.
The book manages to balance a fun, almost slapstick-y plot with more serious and darker themes, but sometimes I wasn´t sure the book had a real direction. What does this book want to be? I laughed and I was confused at the same time.
The banter between Miller and the poltergeist Walker was fun and the chemistry between them palpable. But for the romance being a slow burn, it was also a little sudden. The built up for the first kiss was not enough. And suddenly they kiss and more happens immediately. The first sex scene was kind of fade to black and at first I wasn´t even sure it even happened, as it was only revisited in her memory the next day. We were robbed of their first love scene which was weird because the following sex scenes were open door, albeit short and not overly descriptive. It felt wrong to me to not show the first time they sleep with each other for I personally think it´s important and needed for the believability of the relationship and connection between two lovers. If the following scenes would´ve been closed door aswell than it would not have bothered me.
The plot twist toward the end I did not see coming but I had the feeling that a lot of things in this book are never really explained. What the hell is going on with these stars? How long has Walker even been dead and how did he die? We never really get a backstory on him and therefore it was hard to build a connection. How does this whole ghost thing even work? There are a lot of plot holes and unanswered questions. You just have to vibe with it.
Reading this felt like being in a weird fever dream. I´m going so far as saying it felt like I smoked something, lmao. It´s definitely original and the author has a vivid and creative imagination.
While the book had lots of chaotic, witty charm I think it was not 100% for me. I felt disconnected because 90% of the time I did not know what the hell was even happening and how things or creatures looked like. How things worked, why things happened. Even the ending was kind of open. Someone has to explain to me how it ends. Where are they? Is it the "epilogue" in the beginning of the book? For readers who love a clear HEA this will not be satisfying, but for readers who love a more mysterious and unclear ending, this will be more their cup of tea. There´s no epilogue either or any kind of information how and where they will be together.
I would still recommend for everyone who likes their characters and stories to be a bit different, but chaotic and lovable. But be prepared to be confused at times and for some questions to remain open and concepts/worldbuilding to be more on the vague side.
Safety:
Safe for me as there was zero details on Walkers past or who he even is or used to be before he became a ghost. I think this was the weirdest book I´ve ever read. And I don´t necessarily mean that as a negative thing but wow... I´m not sure what to think. This might contain some spoilers but I have to address some things. Otherwise it would not be an honest review. So beware if you want to go into this totally blind. The release is also around the corner, so I think I can write a more detailed review for it being an ARC.
First of all the world building was not explained well enough for my taste. We get thrown into this strange fantasy world full of weird creatures I had problems imagining in my head. I was not sure what I expected and while this was modern (phones and cars) it was not really clear what kind of setting this is. It´s hard to be immersed in a world I don´t really understand. It was like the author just expected us to. I mean just as an example - FMC Millers neighbor is a tree named Lavender. But how does she look like? Where exactly does she live? It was hard for me to grasp the concept.
The writing style was surely different - and again I don´t mean this in a negative way but it clearly will not be for everyone. I´m sure a lot of readers will love it but for me personally it was a litte too confusing and all over the place. Being in Millers head was surely a trip and I had difficulty following her sometimes chaotic thoughts.
The book manages to balance a fun, almost slapstick-y plot with more serious and darker themes, but sometimes I wasn´t sure the book had a real direction. What does this book want to be? I laughed and I was confused at the same time.
The banter between Miller and the poltergeist Walker was fun and the chemistry between them palpable. But for the romance being a slow burn, it was also a little sudden. The built up for the first kiss was not enough. And suddenly they kiss and more happens immediately. The first sex scene was kind of fade to black and at first I wasn´t even sure it even happened, as it was only revisited in her memory the next day. We were robbed of their first love scene which was weird because the following sex scenes were open door, albeit short and not overly descriptive. It felt wrong to me to not show the first time they sleep with each other for I personally think it´s important and needed for the believability of the relationship and connection between two lovers. If the following scenes would´ve been closed door aswell than it would not have bothered me.
The plot twist toward the end I did not see coming but I had the feeling that a lot of things in this book are never really explained. What the hell is going on with these stars? How long has Walker even been dead and how did he die? We never really get a backstory on him and therefore it was hard to build a connection. How does this whole ghost thing even work? There are a lot of plot holes and unanswered questions. You just have to vibe with it.
Reading this felt like being in a weird fever dream. I´m going so far as saying it felt like I smoked something, lmao. It´s definitely original and the author has a vivid and creative imagination.
While the book had lots of chaotic, witty charm I think it was not 100% for me. I felt disconnected because 90% of the time I did not know what the hell was even happening and how things or creatures looked like. How things worked, why things happened. Even the ending was kind of open. Someone has to explain to me how it ends. Where are they? Is it the "epilogue" in the beginning of the book? For readers who love a clear HEA this will not be satisfying, but for readers who love a more mysterious and unclear ending, this will be more their cup of tea. There´s no epilogue either or any kind of information how and where they will be together.
I would still recommend for everyone who likes their characters and stories to be a bit different, but chaotic and lovable. But be prepared to be confused at times and for some questions to remain open and concepts/worldbuilding to be more on the vague side.

I don't think I've immediately liked a book based on the publishing information upfront yet, so I guess that's a first. Gotta love the loud and clear middle finger to genAI.
First off, the beginning/ending was such a fun cinematic move. You rarely see authors who are this playful with their story structure these days, and that was a great trick to grab my attention. Simple, yet oh so effective.
The whole thing has a very 'urban fantasy but make it cozy' type of vibe. The lore is interesting and given in a natural way (so only when something is relevant). You don't get too many answers, but it works here and doesn't stink of info dumping. There's a casual flair to the writing that's purely entertaining - it makes you accept anything thrown your way without batting an eye, no matter how crazy.
The banter Miller engages in with other characters - especially Walker - is funny, as is Miller herself. She's a loser with no self-respect who's just trying, and that makes her relatable and fun to follow. Her relationships with others develop naturally - both the romantic one and the friendships - and it's good to see her find her people, even though she doubts their interest in her at every step (or maybe especially because of that, since I can see myself in it).
The book itself is mostly entertaining, but it manages to also add a lining of seriousness by weaving in some heavy topics like grief (really enjoyed the short story) and fear of change. Its exploration of self-hate mixed with people-pleasing based on guilt and a need for connection was especially surprising and enjoyable, since it's not a mix that's easily found anywhere.
Oh, and also, the side characters were such a treat. All of them were great in their own ways and made the story so much brighter.

If you're looking for a chaotic paranormal read that's perfect for the fall months, I'd give this a shot. It's quite a unique experience.

This is my first time reading a book by this author, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I chose it because I'm immediately drawn to anything about ghosts. At first, I was surprised, as it's fantastical in a way I wasn't expecting. Talking trees? Weird, but cool. Okay, sure, let's see where this is going.
This is a very clever story. It's filled with humor and heartbreak. It's a bit offbeat, but all kinds of wonderful. It's refreshing, unique, and just so incredibly different than anything I've read prior to this. The book begins with the epilogue, so I was a bit confused for the first chapter or two, but I stuck with it, and it all began to take shape. However, looks can be deceiving, and the shape I thought I was seeing turned out to be something a bit different. Not "bad" different, but rather "incredibly tricky and surprising" different. In a good way.
This book is laugh-out-loud funny. It's philosophical. It's potentially therapeutic, or at least it was for me, and it's just a really enjoyable and refreshing reading experience. Oh, and probably just as important, it's also a love story. It's brilliant. It's unique, and as I said already, it's quite clever. I loved it. I absolutely recommend this book.

Meet Me After Life was such a unique paranormal romance, with various crazy and weird elements that added the perfect level of humour! Like yes I loved the possessed chickens and no I will not elaborate further because you need to read this to understand how they just worked so well!
This story is delightfully confusing at times, and right off the bat begins with the epilogue, however it's not that frustrating confusion, it's just a part of the weirdness of the book. Look a little deeper though, and Miller’s unstable childhood has left her with a deep fear of abandonment and fiercely independent. This is a beautiful journey of healing, found family, and learning to trust again.

Meet Me After Life by Anneka-Rose Burrell caught me completely off guard. Miller’s sharp humour, disastrous dating life, and habit of hiding behind sarcasm make her impossible not to root for, while Walker brings mystery, mischief, and delicious slow-burn tension. Add possessed chickens, a talking tree, ghostly interference, and a genuinely unexpected turn, and beneath all the chaos is a surprisingly heartfelt story about finding your people.
