Heartbroken and a prisoner in her own castle, it was time for Calliope to take matters into her own hands. Mere days remained until she was bound to Sakari and the Waking Oak was destroyed. It seemed hopeless, but Calliope was determined to fight.
Loyal to the core, Sakari had always respected and followed his father’s direction, but Adair was pushing boundaries Sakari wasn’t sure he wanted to cross. Yet remaining loyal to his kingdom would hurt the ones he loved the most.
Kai had a plan to save Faylinn. It was risky and would require a sacrifice that could cost him his life, but if he didn’t try, Calliope would be lost to him forever.
War in Faylinn was fast approaching. Hearts would be broken. Sacrifices would be made. Lives would be lost. Only the strongest would be left standing.
Mindy is the youngest of six children and grew up in San Diego, California. After graduating from Brigham Young University-Idaho, she discovered her passion for reading and writing. Mindy lives in Summerville, South Carolina with her husband and daughter.
She is the author of the Faylinn novels and the Willowhaven series; as well as the standalones, Stain and The Day That Saved Us. Mindy is also the co-author of the Paper Planes series and the Backroads Duet, which was co-written with Michele G. Miller as Mindy Michele.
I love these characters and hate them. This whole story is magnificent! I was not expecting to fall for hard for some characters and then you break my heart. Why why why?? I know why because you can!! Hahahaha! I cried and cried!! My heart is hurting for these wonderful faeries. Love Faylinn!!!
Have you ever started a book only to find yourself staying up into the late night because you NEED to know how it ends? This is that kind of book. As the last book in the Faylinn trilogy, I was amazed at the path it took with my emotions. It is just as beautifully written as the previous 2 books but I think Mindy Hayes gave her characters so much passion and feeling that it was the best book in the trilogy. I sobbed, I laughed, I was furious, I was relieved, but mostly, I was glad that I read this wonderful story. You should too.
My expectations for this book were pretty high after reading Ember (because- Kai. *swoon*) and this book definitely delivered! Luminary is officially my favorite one of this series <3. Calliope really becomes the amazing Queen we all knew she would be in this one, Sakari managed to worm his way into my heart so much that I felt like I was cheating on Kai (I'M SORRY KAI), and the Faeries reactions to Calliope's human references will never get old. I laughed, I cried... multiple times... and I kind of wanted to strangle the author more than once, but that is exactly why I loved it so much. I cared about these characters so much that I cried real tears over fake people. (I'm admitting that here because we're all book lovers so this is a safe space, right?) I would definitely recommend this series to everyone. EVERYONE. THAT MEANS YOU. GO READ IT!
These books deserve everything. Seriously. The story just couldn't keep growing and growing and becoming epic. I'm breathless. My heart is bleeding. And I cant believe its over. There was a moment when I considered the options, the possible outcomes. The outcome was, as one would say, fated. These books are about choices, and becoming what you're supposed to be. But never forgetting the importance of choices. The author created and enchanting world, full of possibilities and did it without forgetting hope. This is not a cheesy story, romantic yes, but never cheesy or over dramatic. It never loses the fun factor and it's unpredictable. The seriousness of her writing also surprised me, it's mature. The whole story is endearing, and has lots of good royal fae drama in it which I LOVE. XD I'm gonna mourn now. And continue reading books later. U.u My heart!!
OMG I love this series! I know the author is still updating but the ending of this book is PERFECT! 5 stars all the way... and that's just from a beta copy.
I received a copy of Luminary by Mindy Hayes in anticipation of its release on September 4th and I am very excited to share with you the final chapter of Calliope’s story.
I am a huge fan of Mindy Hayes, I think she is a brilliant writer and I always look forward to her books. I’ve gotten a chance to read all three of the books in her Faylinn series:
· Kaleidoscope
· Ember
· and now Luminary
As well as the first book in her Willowhaven series:
· Me AfterYou
She has this incredible ability to create a world that comes alive for her readers. With her beautifully woven description and her dynamic and engaging characters. And her colours! I think I’ve talked about this before but she creates this colour pallet in your mind that leads you through the emotional ups and downs of the story. There are all these bright, vibrant colours that come up throughout the journey that just help create this beautiful world. I think Mindy Hayes has an incredible talent for creating fictional worlds that her readers can just step into.
Now that we’re on Book Three (the final book in Calliope's story), there’s been less world building and a lot more living in the space; which means the characters are bigger and more vibrant.
This book is unique from its predecessors in that it doesn’t just follow Calliope, our main heroine. We also get a first person account of the events from Kai, our male protagonist; and Sakari, our other male protagonist.
I’ll admit, I was a little wary of Sakari, who was introduced in Book Two, because he comes in specifically to disrupt the already established dynamic and relationship of Kai and Calliope. In a lot of ways I found him to be, well, weak. Not in that he was poorly written; but that he was so emotionally vulnerable – and kind of spineless – and I wanted to slap him. But he changed and he grew and by the end of the book, my heart felt for his struggles. He was a boy in love, desperate to both please and escape his father’s iron grip.
Kai was, of course, bone meltingly in love and yet infuriatingly stubborn and closed off. What else is new? Seeing scenes both past and present from Kai’s perspective just made me love him more for his ability to hide all that raw emotion.
And Calliope was her usual teenage, stubborn, often lonely self; with all the power in the world and yet powerless. She is the comforting voice to the readers: the one we know and understand and cheer for no matter what. She is the warrior princess with yellow wings, fighting for the right to have power and love.
How can you not fall in love with Calliope?
And you’ll see some of that in my Random Notes While Reading:
· I want to hate Sakari but he’s just so…weak · He WAS really yours. Believe in the power of love! · Thank you! Calliope took the words right out of my mouth · He honestly thinks this is the best way; how? · Just because your home life sucks, Sakari, doesn’t give you the right to…oh I give up. You’re just so naïve · “How could I not be drawn to that blaze?” · I’m sorry. Proposing? He ain’t proposing shit · I probably shouldn’t but I’m glad Callie likes Sarai · I like the flashbacks so we could see what was in his buzzerwigging mind at the time · You are so easy, my friend · He chose archery so he could lean in close and show you his moves. We all know it · Why does she always smell so good? · Sorry, that’s really badass · No. Sakari, no. Stop. No · Shut up, Skye · That sounded like a sex joke from the boy who doesn’t understand sarcasm · It’s okay to like him as long as you remain focused on the end goal · My heart actually hurts for her · Oh honey, come here. Let me love you · Damn it, that’s actually a really cute nickname · Oh my heart hurts · The fact that he cares like this for her is enough to break your heart · I held my breath through that entire chapter · Spazzlick sounds like such a dirty word · I have a feeling Calliope and her boys could have their own show just with all that lovely dramatic tension · I knew Cam and Sakari would get along · Oh Callie, you’re being such a drama queen · But it’s breaking my heart · No, no, no, no, no, oh, no · That. Was. So. Cool. · How could you…why would you…I’m crying like a baby now · No, I think that’s the sweetest little thought · Aw Declan! · He, he, he, oh, saucy · That epilogue though
This story is full of action, drama, and romance; darkness, light, and magic. Hope and wonder – and lots of tears.
Though her story is ending, Calliope will remain one of my favourite characters to visit because she gives us hope that magic may be real and we’ve simply forgotten over time.
Luminary is the end to something completely magical to me for a lot of reasons. It was a completely beautiful ending to one of the best fairy series out there. Kaleidoscope was also the first indie book that I ever read. I stumbled upon Mindy’s blog in late May of 2013 while researching Vlogs. I watched her Vlog and thought I want to read her writing. Just to my luck she was giving away a copy of Kaleidoscope. I read it in ONE car ride on the way to see my newborn nephew. Mindy does fairies the right away, there are a lot out books out there that don’t.
Luminary made me cry, hate Mindy Hayes, and then smile. Kai is still his stubborn but completely lovable self and Calliope is still wonderful and completely selfless queen. There are a lot of things going on in this last book and it it will definitely keep you reading well into the night. It is so much easier to picture the setting and be passionate about the characters because of Mindy’s writing. Luminary was the best book in this series but I will always crave more from the Faylinn world. I am going to warn all the readers with soft hearts, there are a lot of deaths in this book! I was forewarned by Mindy so I was able to process the deaths a little easier but it was still hard. She made me fall in love with characters that I started out hating. Now that is darn good character development.
I received a copy from the author for a fair review.
I was so excited and highly anticipating this final book in Calliope story. After reading Ember I was dying for this book, I was left wanting so bad to find out if Kai would return or fight for her. I also wanted to see if she would fight for those she loved, or would she be pushed into a life she didn't want.
This book was everything I wanted and more, I had to wait to write my review and process everything that I felt about it! The book is taken form 3 POV's from Calliope, Kai, and Sakari. Getting these multiple POV's did so much to me emotionally, things I thought I wanted I wasn't sure of anymore, I cried, and felt so much! It really tore me apart and was just so well written and gave you insight into the struggles of the whole situation.
Calliope is being held prisoner and being forced into a bond with Sakari by his father. She is in love with Kai but he has abandoned her and she does not know if he will return and time is running out. She is scared that she is not strong enough to fight and if she does she could loose everyone she cares about.
This book had me in tears, I mean I couldn't breathe tears at certain points! I had so many emotions reading this book it made me cry, laugh, it made me happy and gave me butterflies in some points. I felt things I didn't feel in the first 2 books!!! I loved this book!!!
The perfect ending to these great books! Wow so many emotions in this book, I didn't think it could be this good. This book made me want to yell in frustration, laugh, and cry and so many times. It was very well written I could feel the love, pain, and suffering of every character. I loved watching each character as they grew stronger and developed through out this story. I'm almost sad it's over. But very happy with this ending. It was original and I recommend this trilogy to anyone who likes a good story full of love, hate, betrayal, forgiveness, faeries, enchanted worlds, and family. A great read!
So I just finished reading this book and I am feeling so many things. From first opening this book I was furious. There were so many things going on to be honest I was reading this for the Calliope and Kai romance. But then I developed feelings for Sakari??? <----- THAT has never happened to me before. Usually when I like two people in a book I stick to it, but dang. I was torn to pieces in the third book of the Faylinn series. AND DID I FORGET TO MENTION I STAYED UP UNTIL 3AM JUST TO FINISH? It has been years since I have been this addicted to a book series before. Thank you Mindy Hayes for grabbing my attention and having the magical ability to hold it. So excited for book 4!
This was an amazing conclusion to this journey and just when I thought I knew what I wanted to have happen I changed my mind. I was so shocked my change in feelings and Mindy makes you feel so much in this book. The POVs being from 3 characters changes everything. I cried so hard reading this book and loved it! Definitely the best in the series!
Loved this series. I really connected with the characters and unlike a lot of other trilogies, I felt the story got better and better as the series went on. My least favorite of the series was book 2, Ember, but all three were good. This series has it all: fantasy, romance, action, magic, betrayal, loyalty...
I got the first book in the series as a free Amazon Kindle book and it sat on my Kindle for a long time. I can't believe it took me so long to read this one!
This was one of those series that completely consumes you, you forget about everything else other than finishing it. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love. This is a series that I will come back to again and again, it has affected me deeply. The last books that made me feel this way was The Hunger Games trilogy. Truly amazing read and I strongly urge anyone looking for a captivating book to read these. I am strongly hoping we will get another book, It was so good that I am left wanting more.
Excellent ending to this series. As always the characters have their highs and lows and for awhile I wasn't sure how the story was going to play out, but it was a perfect ending. Even though it was a perfect ending I wouldn't mind if the author decides to write more to this world. I will understand completely if this is the absolute last though. It was a great run.
Well I am not sure how Mindy Hayes did it, but she made a trilogy where each book was better than the last! The Faylinn series is an amazing ride. Luminary pulled at my heart strings the most. Happy, sad, gleeful, back to sad .... It was one heck of an adventure. I look forward to reading her other books... Even if they aren't fantasy. :-)
I couldn't stop! I had to keep reading! Such a page turner. The twists in this story had me spinning, in a good way! I love this series and I can't wait to read more from her. I felt every emotion Callie experienced, and I loved the alternating viewpoints. Well written and easy to read. Slight violence and for that I suggest is book for 13+ ~Dowie
you have to read this series. you need to. Mindy Hayes is 100 percent on my must read list for anything now. everytime i thought i figured it out - poof, different path. I'm not even going to give this a proper review because i think it will take away from the book. just read it. (well read the first 1 first, get to here, then you'll get to enjoy Glimmer that comes out in December).
So much to love about this book. Numerous times my heart overflowed down my check with emotion. A strong female heroine finding her place in a new world and proving herself worthy. With Calliope's friends and family by her side, she can accomplish the unthinkable, and she did. Read it!
Yes 5 stars. I actually reread the first 2 books, then read Luminary and immediately when I finished it I read it again since I knew what was going to happen I didn't need to hurry to the ending. I enjoyed the love, war, loss and humor in the book. I also like the way it ended.
I really enjoyed the third book as well. Again some typos that bothered me more than the last book. Great ending, climactic, unpredictable, i felt the characters throughout the whole series were real and not annoying. :) Wish there were more but I'm happy with the ending.
The trilogy overall was very fun and creative! I loved that it was totally clean as well. I felt like the characters and story needed more development throughout, which is why I didn't rate any of the books and higher than I did.
I just loved this series! The first book I got from Book Bub...the twist in the usual teen-coming-of-age plot got me interested. Then I feel in love with the characters and the land and all the intrigue! I couldn't stop until I read the whole series...fantastic!
I can't say enough about this series, especially this book. I loved every second of it! It's exciting, intense and beautiful. Everything you'd want in a good book! Well done, Mindy Hayes!
