Dad clacks away in front of a screen, the kids are catechized by state-approved strangers, and mom puts needles in the arms of patients while the family dog snores alone in an empty house.
Does it have to be this way? Absolutely not.
For decades, Pastor Adam Madden has been laboring to build something far better. The Productive Household is part wake-up call, part field manual for families who refuse to settle for a shared address and a handful of evenings on the couch.
Drawing on Scripture, Puritan wisdom, hard-won experience, and real-world case studies, Madden makes a convincing case for reclaiming the family-integrated economy—the household that doesn’t just live together but works together.
Great overview of the key components that make a productive household. I’m glad that Madden gave a couple of chapters of different implementation scenarios. The reader still has to do the work of plotting their own pathway, given a lot of individual datapoints, which is probably why such particulars are not fleshed out.
You’ll walk away noting the various values/non-negotiable-elements that need to be in focus, but you won’t necessarily see your pathway to achieving them. I’m worried that will cause many to think, ‘Love the idea… can’t do it…’ When that is exactly what Madden doesn’t want!
Know that those who are dedicated CAN find a way, but it takes prayer, time, trial, error, learning, and it takes being encouraged by stacking small decisions that are oriented toward those various values. Focus on one value presented, think of what needs to be necessary to achieve it practically, and then make one small change that gets you there. Repeat the process again and again.
I found this convicting. It seems impossible to build a family economy especially when you have no money to get something started. I hope to at some point consider these things more in depth.
The writing was a lot of stories which wasn’t a fan of. It lacked practicality, but the overall concept and biblical proof texts were great.
A book much needed for our time. It’s a must read for every man (especially men as heads of households) and woman. No matter the season of life; child, single adult, newly married, parent or grandparents. It’s a conversation that needs to be had and action that needs to follow. “In order to begin recovering productive households, with our children’s children in view, the first generation or two will need to be willing to plant trees that we will never see the shade of.”
A great introduction to the idea of an household economy. He helps to highlight what we've lost as a society by relegating "family time" to individualistic hobby approaches vs enjoying a familial goal and venture. Men are supposed to lead their household and hold the role that our culture has thrust upon the school football coach. Your family needs a shared focus even more than a football team.
A few favorite quotes:
"Over the past couple of decades, my wife and I made hundreds and hundreds of decisions in order to arrive at this random Monday."
"Meaningful work together! This is the secret sauce."
My dad used to tell me when I was a boy: "Don't just stand around - do something. Whether it is right or wrong - do something."
Incredibly helpful and practical. Gives a useful vision for making more space for your family to work together and spend time learning the fear and admonition of the Lord.
