Ward No. 8 surprised me with how deeply it affected me. I expected a story centered mainly on medicine, but it became something much larger, like a reflection on what people endure and how they find meaning in difficult circumstances. The character Nathan Weaver is an especially compelling character because his rational approach to life is gradually challenged by experiences that cannot be explained through logic alone. I appreciated how the novel allows its philosophical ideas to emerge naturally through the story instead of presenting them as abstract arguments. Questions about mortality, belief, and human suffering are woven into the characters' experiences, giving them emotional weight. What stayed with me most was the book's emphasis on human dignity. It reminded me that compassion and simply being present for another person can sometimes matter more than having the perfect solution. This is a thoughtful and emotionally resonant novel that I would recommend to readers who enjoy stories that continue to occupy your thoughts after the final page.

This is the most engaging of Dr. Basta's books that I have read so far. The story of the life of a doctor on a hospital's palliative-care wing blends medicine, family, faith, and grief. What sets this book apart from similar books, however, is the author isn't afraid to confront the hard-to-answer questions about faith, life, and death.
