This is the first novel that goes beyond the anime adaptation, so it was nice to finally learn more about the story. However, it was such a turn-off that 80% of the novel is basically a set up for the next one. It killed me, I can't wait :(

If possible read this after Volume 5 is out.

Sirens are pretty stupid. No wonder why they're so low in the Ixseeds.

Even though Sora technically has a harem, only two of the girls are in love with him, and only one by choice.

As for Sora, he doesn't know what romantic love is. Sure he's sexually attracted to the women/day too many lolis around him, but he doesn't want to have a relationship with any of them. Which makes sense considering his personality and inability to have a healthy relationship.

But for the first time in this series Sora has a reaction to a girl that he doesn't understand. And I personally am rooting for this relationship since this is probably the only person he could love, I just hope it's a subplot that's not focused on until said girl is age appropriate.

As for the game, it was okay. Kind of boring since no one was actually playing the game, but that's sure to change next vol.

Oh and this book has a cliffhanger.

Random thoughts on Steph: I'm glad she's acknowledged as important and with usefull skills of her own, but of all the characters she's the one treated as trash. Leaves me with some complicated feelings.

If you read the other three LNs before this one then don't expect much change.

If you haven't then...I don't know...why did you skip the others? They're all the same. MCs are way too fucking good at what their doing, jokes are sexual(appeals to teenage boys) as heck, games are the real meat of this series, character personalities are stereotypically anime, and all of this makes me cringe and tired.

I don't want to read the rest of the LNs of this series that I have(up to Vol. 9) since reading feels like a chore but I also don't want too feel like I've wasted the money(that wasn't much) that I used to buy these and I am able to tolerate it a bit more this time.

—(A otro sitio). Adiós. Ten cuidado de camino a casa.
—¡¿Cómo sucedió esto, aaaaahhhhh?! ¡¡Espera un minutooooooo!!

-Gigantes, Quinto lugar
-Flügel, sexto lugar
-Elfos, séptimo lugar
-Damphiros, décimo segundo lugar
-Hombres Bestia, décimo cuarto lugar
-Sirens, décimo quinto lugar
-Imanity, Decimo sexto lugar

Curiously, it seem No Game No Life's lewdness grows exponentially outside of those initial volumes which formed the basis for the anime adaptation. It is as if Yuu Kamiya knew MADHOUSE would stop after the first three books (and I guess later the sixth), and thus took advantage to over-inflate the vulgarity - in the best way possible, tbh fam.

This volume opens with a rather humorous little scene of Sora getting blueballed from masturbating (does the term even work that way?), having lived in Disboard for months without opportunity for a sexual outlet (being just _too_ chivalrous of a NEET to take advantage of his magically-granted superiority over both Steph and Jibril), unfortunately surrounded by too many attractive female characters. Immediately after getting irrupted from his attempted autoeroticism, a young Dhampir makes herself known, Plum, whose race is on the verge of existence, and who herself is about to die from soul-dehydration. It turns out, in NGNL lore, Dhampirs are energized and grow into maturity by drinking human (or, in this case, Immanity) blood, which is filled with a certain level of life-energy referred to as "soul." When one has one's blood drained, one contracts a strange disease making exposure to the sun fatal (it's magic, so there mere presence of the sun kills you, not just UV rays or anything). Luckily, the second-most soul-filled liquid from the human body is semen, and Sora is all too quick to pull Plum into a corner of the room, prepared to get the succ. He gets cockblocked, though, and the new plan is for a transfer of saliva, the burden of which Shiro takes onto herself. Japan being Japan, it is apparently a-okay for girls to kiss (that is, it is not pornographic), but Sora still has his reservations, and we finally decide on a liquid for Plum's nourishment: sweat. Shiro removes one of her thigh-highs, and her normally autistic/stoic countenance is replaced by a grin of pure sadism, presenting her foot much like a BDSM mistress to be sucked by an eager Plum.

The remaining ~200 pages are pretty interesting, too, I guess.

But, yeah, being serious, it is clear this volume is meant to set up a conclusion of the Dhampir-Siren arc in Volume 5. The central "game" in this volume is a mockery of Tokimeki Memorial, the classic dating simulator. Essentially, the game functions as a means of poking fun at the apparent idiocy of the Siren race's plot to awaken their queen. After an apparently "filler" beach scene, the party move to the homeland of the mermaid race, Siren, whereupon they are brought into a virtual simulation within the Siren queen's dreams, in an attempt to gain her love, wake her up, and prompt her to reproduce with the last male Dhampir, so that both races may flourish. Ino Hatsuse, the normally serious Werebeast, is designated the role of prime love interest for the queen, and immediately upon entering the game world genuflects himself humiliatingly before her feet (well, "tail"; she's a mermaid). What follows is a day-by-day account of Sora and co.'s journey through the game, wherein Ino remains prostrate through a whole forty days, the end of each "day" section of the text ending with such a reference. Also humorous is the fact that everyone but Steph utterly stops attending school, completely dismissing the point of a) Tokimeki Memorial and b) the wager with Siren. Of course, in the end it is revealed the Siren were tricking the Dhampir into accidentally trying to trick Sora and co., and all but Steph were aware the whole time, so this non-ending acts as a cliffhanger for its follow-up, with the added stinger that Sora plans to challenge Flugel to get their Race Piece as well.

So really the major draw for this volume is the lewdness present at the novel's beginning. As in many light novels of its ilk, the climax is obviously telegraphed from the forefront - this is No Game No Life, so obviously the major setpiece is a game scene. In a twist, the game is interrupted when Sora decides to "save and exit," and we are treated to further twists when Sora reveals the underhandedness of Dhampir and Siren's separate goals, leaves to go piss, lets Jibril and the Shrine Maiden trick Steph into thinking Ino's been left to die, and returns in a triumphant show of heroism to profess his deep respect for Ino's masculinity, before dumbfounding everyone with the Flugel announcement.

Oh, and the prose has taken a noticeable step up this time around. A far cry from the stilted writing of the original volume, though I'm not sure if this is Kamiya's or the translator's ability.

In light of my goal to review every book I have ever read (within some reason—can't be bothered to hunt down old school textbooks), I relocated a copy of a No Game, No Life light novel I remember having read but donated because I became too disillusioned with the path it was taking. I had liked the anime and wanted to catch up on the story since it doesn't look like they'll ever finish it, but...

—It has a really obnoxious writing style that I can't really get past.

—Mid-chapter breaks every few paragraphs. Incomplete thoughts! Lots of ♥emojis♥ and—
——......

"How do I follow what's going on?" I said when reading. "It feels like it changes perspective, but it doesn't."

—When it should follow the proceeding idea, it introduces another break like the scene changes, but in fact—
"...and also...Shiro...in particular..."
What?
"...does the...thing..."
What thing?

"...ellipses...always..."

■■■

So, even keeping that in mind, I started re-reading this with the intent of finding how I made it this far into the series even being annoyed with the formatting. Unfortunately, it STARTS with several full-colour lewd shots of girls in the story, particularly a VERY undressed Plum (the not-vampire on the cover) and goes IMMEDIATELY into Plum asking for the "bodily fluids" of the "Monarch"* of Immanity for the continued existence of the Dhampir race, lest they go extinct.

The significance of that is, due to the "all bodily injury is forbidden" part of the First Covenant, drinking blood is impossible,** so the next most "potent" fluid is "R-18" and, thus, cock-blocked by Shiro—

—who had already interrupted Sora's attempt to release his "venom" for the first time since they arrived in Disboard. And somehow he can't defy her, just because they're practically the same mind in two bodies despite having no blood relation.

(I think. It's been a while since they talked about their past. I do remember they had a strange moment where they once lost sight of each other—literally from being in different rooms—and went a little crazy as a result.)

Anyway, a VERY LOT of no actual talk about games other than Steph trouncing every challenger who comes by in Sora's and Shiro's absence and her disappointment at how easy they are to defeat after trying to emulate Sora and Shiro, and some convoluted thing about the Siren*** queen, who is the only one allowed to reproduce or something with the Dhampir, deciding to SELF-INDUCE A COMA that she would only awaken from when her "true love" comes for her—

—a true love she must find while asleep...
—truly an astonishing leap of logic...
—that she facilitates by going into a CONSCIOUS cryogenic sleep that others can visit—

Yeah... about then, I found I could barely finish the rest of the chapter, it became so impenetrable that I don't know what happened in my first read-through. Some kind of Stockholm Syndrome? I was so convinced that the few puzzles that made it into the anime were so good that the rest of the series HAS to be good... even when evidence proves otherwise?

Ugh.

B—ch, please.****

*Sora and Shiro together
**because it makes the person bitten also a Dhampir
***also a fun story: the Sirens are female-only, so to reproduce, they do so with ANY MALE of ANY SPECIES
****quoting the curiously foul-mouthed Izuna

I was a fan of series before I picked this book up. It is the first volume I've read. After watching the anime, I wanted to see more. Naturally, the animation crew had great material to work with because this volume delivers on the appeal of the series.

It was fun and satisfying to see the aftermath of the events of the anime. It turns out the stinger for the anime occurs in a later light novel. It was a great cliffhanger, definitely, but caused some confusion on my part. Anyway, the ongoing process of it merges the real-life-implications of such an event and the games-resolve-conflicts rules of Dishboard.

The game of the Sirens is a real-life Romance game (dating game), which one of the few that the gamer siblings have not mastered. Far from being afraid, they are so proud of the fact that they are socially incompetent shut-ins that they emit a battle aura. Furthermore, the mystery of the nature and victory conditions of the Siren's game is intriguing and compelling, especially given that it is the gamer siblings' logical weakness.

The deviousness and cunning of the gamer siblings also continues to impress. One would be surprised at how much of their silly antics are actually a cover for plans, and how much of it is both. They certainly surprised me with their exploitation of the Beach Episode trope.

I want to focus on that. Beyond the lighthearted and fanservice of the trope, and even beyond the covert deviousness, it specifically deals with the gamer siblings' opinion of beach vacations. Due to their backstory as Hikikomori, they see this common vacation destination as too messy, too hot, bad for one's hair etc. It's pretty deep given the archetypal form of this trop.

Also worthy of note is that Steph does something awesome, proving that she is not "a steph" once and for all, while simultaneously exploiting her reputation as such.

The new character, Plum, is definitely a woobie. The circumstances of the Dphamir race elicit much sympathy, and Plum makes a great Straight Man for the stupidity of the Siren race as well as the silliness laid-backness of the main cast.

The ending was both satisfying and exciting. It achieves all the advantages of a cliffhanger without actually leaving anyone hanging, as well as the advantages of a resolved conflict while still going full steam. It is impressive.

No Game No Life Vol 4, while the funniest book out of the 6 books translated from japanese, is also the most underwhelming of the 6. (Spoilers) In volume 1, the interesting parts of the book that really stand out are things like Sora and Shiro first coming to disboard after beating Tet in chess, or when they beat Chlammy in chess and become king and queen of disboard. Or in volume 2, when Sora and Shiro beat Jibril in materialization shiritori and win her library and a new party member. Or in volume 3 when they beat Chlammy and Fiel at magic othello, then beating Izuna at their werebeast video game. All the previous volumes have an interesting climax, but in volume 4, not much happens. I’ll do admit, that this book is very funny, and for people who have watched the anime (which goes to volume 3,) and have been waiting for a season 2 with no luck, this book is where you’d want to start reading. However, this book overall just builds the foundation of excitement for volume 5. Some may argue that this isn’t necessarily bad. However, the previous 3 volumes have very exciting climaxes while also leaving fans unable to wait for the next volume. Despite that, I think people who have watched the anime and want more will appreciate this extension of what they know about the series so far. In addition, if you’ve read the other books, then you know how entertaining this series can be, and so because this book was underwhelming, I would definitely continue reading onto volume 5. The writing of this book is funny, but not as interesting, so I would give this book a 3 out of 5.

The first volume that the anime did not cover!

New races such as the dhampires and the sirens are introduced. These are basically vampires and mermaids which relied on uhm... "bodily fluid" to survive. I won't spell out what sorts of bodily fluid. Yeah, I can imagine why they set a cutoff at volume 3.
This book had the same fun setting as the volumes before but a tad too much fanservice. You could say that all of the first three chapters were fanservice with an immensely long beach chapter. I could imagine it to be quite the fun (albeit ordinary) beach scene when animated - and of course, we weebs knew that a series such as NGNL was obligated to contain such a scene. But through reading, it isn't too vivid and feels a bit stretchy.

Of course, as we are used to by Sora and Shiro, the entire fanservice was all part of their grand plan. And so the last chapter, when they reveal their thinking, was pretty fun and by far the best part of the book.

It seems that Volume 5 will be quite packed by what has been set up in this book. Looking forward already.

Ehhh... idk if I'm going to finish this series after all. I think what saved the previous three volumes for me was seeing it one screen in the anime. However, this volume just went too far for me with the sex jokes and quite frankly, I just hate this writing style. It's too bare for me and I know other light novel writers don't write this bare boned. So two stars from me and I will ponder if I dare to even bother with the remainder of the series. I wish the light novels were adapted fully as an anime or manga, it would have done much better story wise, and comedy wise, if it were visual.

In this book it shows how sora and shiro are the master gamers from another world, even though they only suck on two types of games, which ones would they be, oh well, but another thing is that they go hard core, in the end and I wonder, who is a stronger in a tactic game, Shiroe from "Log Horizon" aka "The devil in glasses," or Sora and Shiro, King and Queen of Elkea

This series gets weirder and weirder as the book progresses and it seems that the author is kind of just throwing things around in this series it is kind of hard to keep track. The leads are funny the surroundings and other characters are kind of weird and it makes it seem that a fantasy world is the weirdest place you ever want to be.

This was a story so badly written, so simplistic, and not even wholesome/sensible in its explanation of events. Yes, the plot was smart and the political games were interesting. However, it seems to me that the author was just creating solutions to try to fill in the holes. Not everything makes sense, and the novel ends before the issue is resolved. I'm disappointed.

This was a book written by gooners for gooners and i am not the target audience
which is also why i hate that it was somewhat entertaining. this volume was supposed to prepare the ground for the next one and, while i do want to know what's going to happen, i don't think i can survive through the harem-y vibe of another volume.
so like a...1.5 ? 1.7 ?

It was hard to get into. The author disguised a lot of the plot under fan service... but by the end it all clicks into place and it is actually quite smart! It’s no masterpiece of literature but it is a fun take on game theory

Actually a 3.5 but only because the last 40 pages saved the rest of the book from being a plain 3 stars. This one was a bit tough to get through until the end but it does lead into the next one really well and makes me wanna read it (I think this is part 1 of a 2 part arc)
