For centuries the Roman Catholic Church has employed a select few to investigate the most extreme cases of demonic possession, haunted places, and paranormal activity. Often, the calling of an Investigator is passed down from father to son.
After surviving a tragic accident, seventeen-year-old Danny Lambert is sent to live with his father, Paul, who is an Investigator for the Church. At first Danny resists the calling to become an Investigator, but after the horrors he sees, he agrees to begin training with his father.
Danny and Paul are given their first assignment: the haunting of a house in a remote corner of upstate New York. Inside this house Danny will discover a horrifying, mind-blowing secret that will not only change his life, but how he sees everything forever.
I've always been intrigued by exorcisms. Why? I don't know, I couldn't even begin to tell you. While the book starts off fast paced, it slows down briefly but picks right back up. There was a lot of unneeded repetition; however, I didn't find that it deflected from the book. On a scare factor of 1-5, I'd give it maybe a 2. It wasn't crazy scary, but it definitely was spooky. The description of the exorcisms are crazy detailed. If you like horror (or The Exorcist), I would definitely rec!
The first part of this book totally scared me. I was really into it and couldn't wait to see what happened. With the little girl Melissa that no one can see, that first exorcism and the racing footsteps, and everything was leading up to something frightening but then came Part 4. It was a let down for some reason to me. I love this author and will read everything he write a bit I was a little disappointed at the final part. And I don't know why. It was so shocking first and then the final acts were just mundane. I guess I expected more. Does that mean it was a bad book? Not at all. It was a very good book and I am looking forward to the next one.
Paul Lambert, is one of the few people chosen by the Catholic Church, to investigate possessions and haunted houses. Paul has an ex-wife and two children, who hardly know him. There was a terrible car accident, that killed Paul's ex-wife and his daughter. After the accident, Danny is sent to live with his father. Danny begins to have terrible nightmares and does not tell his father about them. The nightmare that bothers Danny the most, is his mother coming for him and trying to temp him to join her. Danny refuses to become what his father is but after seeing all the evil that takes place, he changes his mind. Danny begins his training to help his dad and the church. Paul and Danny, are given their first assignment. It is a haunted house in up state New York. While at the haunted house, Danny keeps seeing this little girl name Melissa. No one else can see her but Danny. The owners of the house, Robert and Helen, have no children. Danny is convinced that they are keeping this little girl trapped in the basement. What Danny is about to find out, will change his life forever.. This was a fast paced book, that held my interest right up to the end. If you enjoyed this book, the author has told me, that he is working on sequel. I plan on checking out other works by this author. I highly recommend this book.
I would love to give 5 stars, but there was too much repeating of the same sentences over and over. Explaining a situation once or maybe twice is sufficient. But every other page was too much for me. I would recommend the book to my friends because the story was interesting and enjoyable.
If you liked The Exorcist then you will like this book. Fast-paced, this book hits the ground running. It slows a little, then picks right back up. Definitely a book you won't want to put down.
This is the second book I have read by Mark Lukens and I will say I am definitely not disappointed. He is very engaging and hold you there to the end. Great writer and I am looking forward to more of his books.
I'm a huge fan of paranormal books, especially those related to hauntings and occult subject matter. Having read countless books on those topics, I've found that it's not always easy to sort through the increasing number of available books to find the really top notch reads, the real page turners. The Exorcist's Appreciate is one such addition to the genre.
The writing was very high quality, and the storyline was very unique. There seem to be only a handful of ways to tell a story like this, and that's why it's rare to find one that isn't trite or overdone. However, Mark Lukens has found a way to tell an old story in a very new manner and with a twist that I didn't see coming.
I highly recommend it for fans of Rockwell Scott, Ron Ripley, Michael Richan, Darcy Coates, Michelle Dorey, Cheryl Bradshaw, and Alexandra Sokoloff.
I loved this book. Mark Lukens takes our deepest fears and uses them to scare the hell out of us through his writing. He is definitely successful and The Exorcist's Apprentice proves it. This book is on par with the cult favorites like The Omen, Carrie and Pet Sematary. It had me jumping at the slightest noise and leaving the lights on. I think I have to buy a nightlight because of The Exorcist's Apprentice. Excellent scare by Mark Lukens, and that will be $5.95 for the nightlight please. 😉 Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys being scared to death.
I've grown up devouring and scouring the horror genre and looking for fresh takes. I can usually predict the outcome of a book or see where it is going and I did think that was the case with this novel UNTIL that twist. This was definitely a page turner that had me completely enthralled! I definitely look forward to reading more from this author and I hope to be as impressed with his other works and I am with this one!
Excellent. More people need to read, rate and review this series
This is a great read. Like the rest of Mark’s books it’s believable. He does an excellent job of writing horror that doesn’t go too far. And scary stories are so much better when you think it could really happen.
Whenever I read a Mark Lukens book I expect a good quality read and that's exactly what I get every time.I don't like horror unless it's done well and Mark like Steven King knows how it's supposed to be done, which is why their the only two horror authors that I read.Another job well done Mark.Five stars🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟.
I would have finished this book sooner but I had to wait for daylight so I wouldn’t be too scared to sleep in the dark! LOL! A very entertaining story from an excellent author. I am currently working my way through all of his books. I highly recommend any of his books for the best part about reading - a temporary escape!
3.5 🌟 What a ride the first 100 pages were! It was just what I was looking for during spooky season. However, it did start to drag for me, I think mainly because of the writing, which is my only complaint - even though it beat my expectations for most indie published books, most sentences were very simplistic and chronological.
I enjoyed this book so much I read it in one sitting. I immediately checked to see if there was another one coming out about the same people, maybe an "exorcists apprentice #2." Hope so.
We learned a lot from the Exorcist. This tale gives us insight into the evil that causes the possession. Very entertaining and disturbing. I have read several of mark's books and he is gifted. Keep writing brother. You are talented
I loved every page and kept turning them until the morning light approached. This book would make a great movie !! I'm off to read the 2nd book in the series now.
The book started as a typical exorcist. I continue to read it to see if maybe the story would surprise me. Before I knew it I had read chapter after chapter. I recommend you give this book a chance.
I've always been interested in stories of possession having been raised Catholic whether they were fiction or supposedly true stories. This story ended in the usual way after an unexpected twist.
Very realistic storytelling, nothing flashy or over the top. Solid characterization and good descriptive wordbuilding really ties everything together. Add in some demon possessions and you definitely get a feel for the original exorcist's.
Great horror story. I had no idea what was happening until nearly the end. That rarely happens in most books I read. Please write more stories with Paul and Danny!
