A NANCY COZY MYSTERY FOR ADULT READERS OF THE ICONIC TEEN SLEUTH
During one of River Heights’ notorious surprise thunderstorms, Nancy rescues and befriends a young heiress, Raye Hawthorne. Orphaned after the recent loss of her mother, Raye is overwhelmed with grief. In an attempt to buoy her spirits, her aunt hosts a party at the family manor, which Nancy attends to support her new friend.
It’s a night of dancing, gossip, and fun before a shocking discovery is made.
Raye’s inheritance—the family jewels—have gone missing!
Without these jewels, Raye’s family won’t have enough money to keep the poor girl’s childhood home.
But Nancy is on the case.
Could it be the troubled teen shoplifter Ty Blake? The seemingly friendly housekeeper who knew the code to the safe? Or perhaps the mysterious guest who was accidentally invited to the occasion?
The young, curious Nancy is determined to solve the mystery, but the clues lead to more than the culprit, ensnaring her in a harrowing adventure…

My review is honest because I did not get a free copy of the book.
To begin with, I appreciate what the author was trying to do. However, as an avid Nancy Drew reader across several decades, this wasn't a hit for me. The author didn't capture Nancy's voice, personality, or character in a way that feels authentic. I try not to assume that's because the author is male, but I generally don't find that men write female characters well.
One of my biggest issues right off the bat - what is with the random romance?? I understand that this is a modern take, but the whole point of the classic Nancy Drew books was that there was little focus on romance. The books were about mysteries, family and friends, and the community. The romance with a "bad boy" was completely out of place and unenjoyable. It's reminiscent of the 90's pulp fiction books, not the classic 30's books.
Also, the original Nancy character didn't run around adamantly telling everyone a person was the criminal for no reason. Yet this book portrayed her doing just that. The original Nancy Drew character focused on getting to the bottom of things no matter what. She didn't accuse someone simply because she disliked them or heard rumors about them. Again, this doesn't align with the original character.
The book also needs another go over with an editor. There were several typos that weren't caught.
I'm hoping this book will get a revision, and that any further releases do a better job at capturing Nancy Drew in a much more authentic way.
The Secret of the Midnight Clock took me right back to childhood, staying up past my bedtime reading my Nancy Drew books. The story is fun and nostalgic in the best way. I loved the mystery, the clues, the sense of adventure, and the way it evoked that feeling of being a part of the story, uncovering the secrets right along with Nancy and friends.
Hayden has done a fantastic job of melding the old and new. The book stays close enough to the original formula that fans of Nancy Drew will dive right in. But the author has also put his own spin on things, creating a unique story that pays homage without being repetitive. The characters were endearing, and the mystery itself kept me turning the page. Kudos to Hayden for bringing an old classic back to life. I look forward to more mysteries in the future!
"The Secret of the Midnight Clock" by Hayden Madison is a fun easy to read mystery that will take us back to our childhoods. It was a fabulous nostalgic return to Nancy Drew with a modern telling. The mystery, adventure, and characters give a nod to the original stories but Hayden Madison has put their own magic touch to the story. I was drawn right in from the start and had fun solving the mystery right along with Nancy. I'm a sucker for detective stories and look forward to more from this author.
I thought this was a really fun read and a fun revisit to the Nancy Drew world. It very much reminded me of reading her stories as a kid and I felt transported back into that world. The mystery and adventure were great to follow as well the characters and the personalities. I loved Nancy and her sass and determination and Ty amused me through out as well. I definitely enjoyed this fresh Nancy Drew mystery, so fun to be in that world again and I am very much looking forward to more!
