Maria Frankland has a dubious internet search history and a very worried mother-in-law. However, neither of these things can stop her writing gripping psychological thrillers in which you’ll never find a happy-ever-after.
Her novels are mostly set in Yorkshire where you’ll hear the accent through all her characters. These are people you could live next door to, or closer still… don’t say you haven’t been warned.
Maria’s novels are fast-paced, down to earth and realistic. You never know what’s around the corner…

I received an advance copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily. This story about Jessica who was bullied by a vile sister and brother duo while at school, had me spitting vitriol. That children can be so cruel and even worse are enabled by equally awful parents raised my hackles. Unfortunately for Jessica, and her daughter Alissa, they are thrust back into the lion's den three decades on, when they return to Jessica's childhood home following the death of Jessica's mum. Relevant. Page-turner. 4 and a half stars
A huge thank you to Maria Frankland for the early release of your newest novel and for once again having me as a member of your Beta Team!
What They Made Me Do is Maria's 30th full length novel, and the 30th of hers that I've read. Just like all of the others, it did not disappoint!
Based upon the main theme of "Don't let the past control your future," this book follows menopausal wife and mother, Jessica. Following the death of her mother, she is devastated by grief and also the prospect of returning to her childhood town/home.
After (barely) surviving severe bullying as a 13 year old, Jessica fears that she will encounter her horrible harassers, brother and sister, Dean and Lorraine. With unresolved childhood trauma and fueled by rage, the story quickly escalates when her own daughter, Alissa, is instantly bullied at her new school where Jessica is also a teacher.
This novel explores so many dynamics: Are Jessica's actions forced upon her by others? Will she escape her past or let it consume her? Are negative traits inherited? Is a victim destined to always remain a victim? How do grown women's actions effect their own daughters?
With lots of her customary twists and surprises, Maria nailed it again! I wholeheartedly recommend What They Made Me Do along with all of her other novels.
