A missing friend. A dangerous quest. And a love so great it could save the world—or destroy it.

Kira Blackwell needs an escape. Fresh out of a toxic relationship, she finds just what she needs in Charles, the grandfatherly widower next door whose fanciful tales of archaeological adventure immerse her in places beyond her wildest imaginings. And then there’s Owen, Charles’s grandson, a scarred soldier-turned-bodyguard who crops up when he’s least expected—and always when he's needed.

When an encounter with a mysterious stone in Charles’ possession pulls him through a portal to an unknown world, Kira joins forces with Owen to find his grandfather. Caught between the intensity of Owen’s gaze and nefarious forces beyond their control, Kira must contend with druids, tree spirits, and shadowy wraiths. Even worse, the revival of a mysterious power lying within her, dark and dormant, could be the key to saving Charles—or the downfall of all she loves.

But an even more dangerous battle is taking place in Kira’s heart. Though she is reluctant to love again, she is unable to deny the desire burning between her and Owen, and everything he does only seems to intensify the flame.

From the streets of Toronto, Canada to a magical garden in Scotland, Kira finds love as the depth of her powers are revealed. But when a terrifying threat from another world threatens everything she holds dear, Kira must confront her past, embrace her powers, and risk everything to save the man she loves.

I started writing stories about faraway places and strong heroines when I was just a girl, and I grew up reading every fantasy and romance novel I could find.

Veil Walker began as I dream I couldn’t stop thinking about. I decided the only way to find out more about these intriguing characters was to write about them. Writing and publishing Veil Walker has been a journey with lots of ups and downs, but I am so glad I finished Kira and Owen’s story!

I hold an undergraduate degree in English Literature and a Masters of Library and Information Science, and I have spent almost two decades working in archives and libraries.

Many of my own life experiences have influenced my writing – I grew up swimming and camping on the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, I’ve competed in triathlons, and I lived in The Netherlands for two years where I travelled extensively throughout Europe.

I currently live in Ontario, Canada with my husband, two daughters, and a disgruntled cat named Sammy. When I’m not dreaming up characters and putting them in impossible situations, I enjoy swimming, cycling, and baking.

I love a good slow burn urban fantasy and Veil Wlaker delivered. The FMC was so relatable, it felt like we wolud be friends in real life and for me that made me want to keep reading. The mmc is a total thumbs up, zero red flags guy, which I love!!. These two went through it and I was so invested in the plot and their story! Such a fun read!

At a time when she is searching for change, Kira Blackwell lucks into a connection with the kindly old Charles. Which leads her to his ever reliable grandson, Owen. When a mysterious stone causes Charles to vanish. Kira and Owen must join forces in a desperate attempt to bring him back.

Think Lord of the Rings meets Walt Disney’s Pocahontas with just a splash of The Bodyguard. I think my favorite thing about this story was that it was unique. The fantasy side is rooted in druids and nature in a way I have not really seen before. So it was fun to discover the lore as I read. I loved the main characters! Maybe it’s the Zuko of it all, but I’m so here for a scarred MMC. 😍Plus our FMC was so flawed and so real that I really connected with her! Urban Fantasy is among my absolute favorite genres. That being said this story leaned into the Romance in Romantasy. And deeply explores the internal. Something to consider if you read fantasy for the action.

Now let’s do a little vibe check...

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ A 4 on the spice scale. The spicy scenes are open door, and pretty graphic. But to be honest they weren’t for me. 🫣 They included a ton of dialogue. Which made them feel clunky. And our heroine’s voice changed so much I felt like she had been suddenly body snatched. I did enjoy the pacing and innuendo that led up to these scenes actually being included, but I was overwhelmed when we finally got there.

🤯🤯 Plot Twist! 2... I was genuinely and pleasantly surprised. Multiple times. And you have to get up pretty early in the morning to surprise me. 🤣

✨✨✨A cozy 3. There were some pretty magical cozy scenes. I do however wish some of them had used that actual word less.

👥👥👥 3 for character development. The characters grew and grew. It was lovely. I couldn’t have asked for more

🌏🌏🌏 World building! It was a very dynamic world with it’s own set of rules. What it did well that you don’t often see in this type of story, was drag the real world along with it. There was magic and multiple realms but time didn’t stop and the real world was affected. I loved that.

Read it! I definitely enjoyed it. I’d like to thank the Space Network for my advance reader copy of this title. 🥰

✨📚 ARC Review 📚 ✨

Thank you to The SPACE Network and Brenda Hicock for the gifted copy of this book! My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Once I got started on this story I was pulled in and wished I could read it in one sitting. You get this relatively calm start that immediately shifts into an adventure with portals, druids, elemental magic, and a big baddie trying to escape his other-realm imprisonment!

The story is engaging with a cool take on the magic system and Kira's walker abilities. The characters truly shine in this one - Kira is smart, competent, but has to rebuild her confidence after placing her trust and love in the wrong person. Owen is such a lovable green flag mmc - a bodyguard with scars, both visible and not - who falls first and hard for the woman he vows to keep safe.

Veil Walker is a standalone urban fantasy romance, but is planned to be part of a group of interconnected stories in this world, each featuring other couples.

Veil Walker is easily one of my favorite reads this year. The story follows Kira, whose chance encounter with her elderly neighbor, Charles, after helping him with his walker, blossoms into a beautiful friendship built on shared stories. When she meets his grandson, Owen, sparks fly—and that’s when things get weird. Brenda Hicock masterfully lures us into a magical world and makes it impossible not to fall in love with the characters, especially Kira and Owen, whose individual character growth is chef's kiss! For anyone who believes in love at first sight or feels that everything happens for a reason, Veil Walker is an absolute must-read. Special thanks to Brenda Hicock and The SPACE Network for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

WOW, this book pulled me in and boy did I I ended up staying up ALL NIGHT reading!

Kira is easy to relate to, Owen is swoony, and I loved the magic, Druids, and found family. The magic system brought something new to my world, and I loved being a part of the figuring things out alongside Kira.

I came for the fantasy but stayed for the characters and all the feelings. Definitely a fun read, and I'm already ready for more from this world!

I really enjoyed Veil Walkers by Brenda Hicock. I loved the historical elements, it made it feel more interesting and unique. The historical details added depth to the story without taking away from the characters or the mystery. I found myself wanting to keep reading to see how everything would come together. Overall, it was a really enjoyable read and one I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys history mixed with a little mystery and the supernatural.

I ended up staying up all night to binge this baby!

I've never read a book with a magic system like this and I had a great time learning about Druids and Celtic mythology.

Kira and Owen are definitely an insta love LOL and that's not normally my jam but it's to be expected in a high stakes setting like this one!

My review of Veil Walker — 5/5 stars ✨

I didn't expect to get so attached so fast, but this book grabbed me by the heart.

I went in for the portal fantasy, I stayed for the people.

KIRA — God, I get her. She's not just "recovering from a breakup" in that cute rom-com way. She's hollowed out. She's rebuilding after someone made her feel small, and that makes her so real to me. What I loved is that her power isn't pretty and sparkly at first - it's dark, it's heavy, it's something she's scared of. It mirrors exactly how it feels to carry trauma. Seeing her go from flinching at kindness to actually choosing to step through a portal for someone she loves? That arc hit me hard. She's not a damsel, she's a survivor learning that her dark side isn't something to hide.

OWEN — Listen, I usually roll my eyes at the tortured bodyguard, but Owen works because he's not trying to fix her. He's scarred in his own way, literally and emotionally, and he carries it quietly. He doesn't talk much, but when he looks at Kira it's like... he actually sees the power in her that she's afraid of and he doesn't flinch. That intensity everyone talks about? It's not just sexy, it feels safe. He shows up. Every single time. No grand speeches, just there. That's my kind of swoon.

CHARLES — He broke my heart in the sweetest way. That grandfatherly neighbor who tells you wild archaeological stories over tea? The one who makes you feel less alone in the world? I loved him so much that when the stone took him, I felt Kira's panic in my chest. He's the found family glue.

For me the fantasy wasn't about having a perfect magic system explained in a textbook. It felt like folklore — druids, tree spirits with faces in the bark, wraiths in the shadows of a Scottish garden. It’s ancient and a little unexplained, like it should be when you stumble into another world from Toronto. I liked that it felt a bit wild and overwhelming, because that's exactly how Kira felt.

And the romance? Yes, it's fast. But to me it didn't feel unrealistic — it felt like two people who finally felt seen after being alone for a long time. That kind of connection doesn't follow a normal timeline. The tension between them is burning from page one and when it finally breaks... yeah, that 3.5 spice is earned and emotional.

This is a story about chosen family, about trusting your own darkness, and about love that finds you when you're not even looking for it anymore. I closed it feeling warm and a little misty-eyed.

Already waiting for the next couple in this universe.

Thank you to the S.P.A.C.E. Network for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for my honest review!

When I started reading this ARC, my hopes were high. I just loved the beginning and the set-up; woman recovering from a break-up finds a friend in her old neighbour, who wants to set her up with his grandson. They both have their own baggage, but from the moment they meet, there is definitely some tension and attraction going on.
As soon as some otherworldly things started happening, the pacing started to feel off to me. Some of the situations/chapters felt rushed, or there were just too many things happening at once... and other chapters were slower or just focusing on the romance. And I will come back to that romance in a bit.

Kira, our FMC in this story, is pretty likable. She was definitely hurt and is still recovering from that, but she also has past trauma to deal with. I really loved how she isn't this purely innocent damsel in distress, but is layered and has a dark side to her.

Owen, our MMC, is definitely written as a guy to swoon over.

As for the fantasy part of the plot: I loved the idea of Druids, Tree Spirits and Veil Walking.. especially combined with Scotland. I did miss more world-building, a lot of it felt like "so this is the way it is" without any explanation given, some history or rules or whatever. It made it all feel a bit all over the place, especially since almost everyone seemed to suddenly be tied up to it all. I would have loved it if it would have held more depth.

The romance. Ahhh, ok, so I did enjoy the first few chapters of tension between Owen and Kira... It was definitely a fast burn, haha. A little bit too fast on the emotional side of it all. They hardly knew each other, just met, but were already acting as if months had passed.. especially when it came down to making certain acclaimations to each other.
The way Owen and Kira just accepted or waved away certain reddish flags in each other was... weird. Could have made for some great character development if it was more written out, I think?
The spicy scenes were better paced, and were ok.

I liked how easy to read it all was, and hey, I love short chapters, so that was really a plus.
The ending didn't really grasp me, it felt a bit too unrealistic. But it did wrap most of it up. I hope the coming prequel will offer some answers about the history of it all, and some more world-building.

Veil Walker by Brenda Hicock was a good fantasy read and had a little bit of everything for people to enjoy. There were moments of sadness, inspiration, action and even suspense throughout it. I like that things popped up at the right times without one part taking over another part.

The characters felt like actual people with their own struggles and personalities, even the secondary ones. I enjoyed Kira especially and watching her deal with everything from her past while also finding herself and her independence while learning about what she is capable of. Owen was also an amazing MMC, he was sweet and protective but also not overbearing. He let Kira do her own thing, which was a good change from the typical reads.

I loved the way their relationship while everything was happening. They didn't let anything stop them, but it also didn't take over the whole story. The magical elements were definitely a highlight.

Between the druids, elemental magic, portals, and even other creatures, there was always something new in this world to keep the story flowing steadily without bombarding you with information.
What drew me in for this book originally was where the story was set. Scotland. I am a bit biased, as my ancestry dates back to the Scottish Vikings but I have always been especially drawn to books that have the folklore, mythology or even have the book setting connected to some parts of the book. This book added to my love for the Scots and caught my attention quickly.

Overall, Veil Walker was an enjoyable fantasy romance. I loved the characters and the magic. They kept things interesting with a good balance between the lighter and more emotional moments. I'm definitely interested in where this story takes me.

What an interesting story! I absolutely loved how strong the theme of found family was throughout this book. My man Charles, he really was the star! He was quietly making moves behind the scenes, putting everything into place to help Owen and Kira right from the beginning.
The whole concept of the Guardians and the Druids was such a unique storyline. I was completely immersed and couldn’t wait to see how everything would unfold. Kira’s background, in particular, was one of the most fascinating parts of the story for me.
Let me tell you, I shed more than a few tears during some parts of this book. In the end, we got our HEA, and I loved the reminder throughout the story that ultimately, love really does conquer all.
I have to say that I was mind blown when I realized that parts of the story take place in my hometown on the Bruce Peninsula! I was so shocked and excited that I had to message all my friends back home to tell them how awesome it was that our little town made it into the story. Talk about making it big! 😂
Such a unique and emotional read with a beautiful message about love, family and the people we choose to have by our side.
Looking forward to reading about our girl Shae in the next book!

Veil Walker took me a little while to fully get into, but once the larger pieces of the story started coming together, I became much more invested.

There is quite a bit being established in the beginning as we’re introduced to Kira, her past, and the world surrounding her. The story didn’t completely grab me until around the 40% mark, and I struggled at times with dialogue that felt a little overexplained and pacing that I wished moved faster.

But once the Celtic-inspired magic, Druids, elemental magic, and Kira’s abilities as a Veil Walker really started unfolding, the story became much more compelling. Every time I thought I had figured out where the plot was going, another twist made me reconsider. I especially enjoyed looking back and realizing how much foreshadowing had been planted along the way.

Owen was also one of my favorite parts of the book. His developing relationship with Kira felt surprisingly healthy and respectful. I appreciated that he could be direct about his feelings while still having his own vulnerabilities and insecurities. Kira definitely had a few moments where I wanted her to PLEASE get out of her own head 😂, but overall I enjoyed watching their relationship develop.

For a debut novel, there are some really interesting ideas here. The pacing and dialogue were my biggest struggles, but the magic, twists, foreshadowing, and larger story ultimately won me over. I’m interested to see how both this world and Brenda Hicock’s writing develop as the series continues.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I fell in love with this book from chapter one. If you're drawn to adventure full of magic, Druids, nature, Scottish folklore, a supportive friend group, and good vs. evil, this book has it all. It gives Thor: Ragnarok meets Lord of the Rings vibes, and I ate it up!

Kira, our FMC, meets Owen, a scarred MMC with a very assertive personality, at a celebration of life she didn't want to attend but went to out of respect for her elderly neighbor, Charles. Their banter is immediately addictive, and they part without even learning each other's names.

Time passes while Kira helps Charles go through his belongings: old photos, books, and trinkets of yesteryear. Then one day his grandson shows up to help, and it's explosive. Owen is convinced Kira is taking advantage of his grandfather. They fight, and Kira threatens to leave. But first, Charles asks her to bring him two things: a sword and a strange rock from his collection.

Kira touches the rock and is pulled into another realm, where she discovers a demon who has been trapped for ages and now wants out. When she returns, Charles is missing, and she's the only one with the power to save him. The rock's magic only responds to her… but she has to learn how to use it!

Thank you so much to The S.P.A.C.E Network and Brenda Hicock for the privilege of being on this ARC team and reading early for an honest and thoughtful review.

I was a little hesitant with this read at first, but I quickly fell into this amazing story.

Kira dumps her fiancee after he cheats and falls back into her introverted ways. Until one day she notices her elderly neighbor struggling in his driveway. Of course she helps him out and they quickly develop a friendship. The journey that follows is insane. Between learning she has mysterious powers and her past, Kira's life will never be the same.

Kira is so realteable and I love her. I feel like this is exactly how your average introvert would react to finding out they has this strange, unknown magic. Owen (MMC) is swoon worthy in all of the right ways. He is fiercely protective of Kira, but also knows when to back down, and let her come into her power. There was more than once that I did the audible "awww" while reading.

The magic system was intersting and fresh. There was not a ton of world building, but in this scenario it relly worked. There really isn't a single person with all of the details of Kira's magic. So as Kira learned more, the reader learned more. It made the story feel hyper realistic because the lore didn't matter. What mattered was controlling her power to defeat the enemy.

If you like druids, found family, and high stakes urban fantasy, you will LOVE Veil Walker by Brenda Hicock

It turned out to be such a heartwarming, cozy story that is perfect for this season. Well at least for me.
An easy flowing Urban romantasy that definitely reminded me of outlander.
I really enjoyed the set up and how it all started as just a regular day in fmc’s life.
The progression of mmc’s and fmc’s relationship felt smooth and very intriguing.
MMC is a walking green flag. Strong, protective but i would say emotionally scarred. His life purpose is to shield FMC from any sort of danger. It gave me “awwww” moments for sure.
The author gave just the right amount of tension and spice (which i am very grateful for). Nothing seemed forced or fake and the entire book was paced perfectly!
I was very impressed and in a way it was a learning experience for me because the author was very detailed and descriptive with Celtic culture and the Tree of Life.
I really enjoyed the transition from modern world to druids.
The magic felt very intriguing place and again i am grateful that i did not have to think or read twice about how it all works and what or who came from where.
Definitely would recommend for all contemporary/urban romantasy readers.

Veil Walker is a such a cool book that is hard to fit into one category. At time the book feels like contemporary fiction with hints of suspense, there are other moments where it fully delves into the fantasy genre, and throughout those we always have the thread of romance.

A great group of characters, from the main characters Kira and Owen as they work together to help a loved one, and in the meantime start falling for each other; to Shae and Jace and the other side characters who feel like fully developed characters.

I greatly enjoyed the Canadiana of this book as a southern Ontario girly - so fun to actually know where a book is set and be able to picture it! The growing and learning Kira does throughout this book is really special and loved being able to follow along on her journey and her HEA. I look forward to whatever Brenda Hicock decides to do next!

Veil Walker by Brenda Hicock pulled me into an atmospheric world filled with druids, wraiths, and Scottish lore.
Kira is smart and capable, but she soon discovers that she may not be quite who she thought she was. I enjoyed following her as she uncovered more about herself and the world around her.
Owen is a strong soldier-turned-bodyguard who has a definite soft spot for Kira, and their relationship brings a great romantic element to the story. These two have a connection that they can try to deny, but ultimately can't escape.
What stood out most to me was the atmosphere. The combination of urban fantasy, supernatural elements, and Scottish lore created a moody world that was easy to get lost in.
Veil Walker works as a standalone while also opening the door to more interconnected books in the future, which gives this world plenty of room to grow.
A good choice for readers who enjoy urban fantasy romance, supernatural elements, Scottish lore, and a romance that simply can't be denied.

Let me just start out by saying...I kept asking my husband why he couldn't be more like Owen throughout the entire book. I kept getting looks because I was giggling and cussing the whole time I was reading.

This was such an addictive story. I love the modern magical elements and the love, friendships, and found family elements throughout the story. This definitely ranks up there with my top reads this year.

"Veil Walker" by Brenda Hicock was emotionally devastating (in the best way). Around page 194, I was fully in my feelings I'm still not okay. It was also impossibly tense every chapter left me desperate for more. One moment that really stuck with me: ""With great love comes great risk, Kira." he said. "I hope one day you find me worthy of taking such a risk." STICK A FORK IN ME I AM DONE." If you love emotional reads that stay with you, this one is for you. Highly recommend.

First of all, I was so excited and grateful to get to be an ARC reader for this author’s debut novel.

Veil Walker is an urban fantasy that centers around Druid and Celtic magic and symbolism. It features wholesome friendships, romance and found-family. It was a cozy read while still incorporating some moderate spice and burn.

The relationship between Kira and Owen is authentic and relatable. There’s a great balance of banter, humour and tension. The author does a great job at exploring the relationship and working through real fears and trauma.

I really enjoyed the contrast between the types of magic in the book and how the FMC works through her new identity. It really highlighted the idea that we are defined more by our choices and not by our past.

Thanks again for this opportunity and I can’t wait for the sequel!

Overall, this book has a good pace and a good story. You grow to love the characters and can see the story well. As with many that lean into trends, this story could stand with less spice as it can stand on its own without it. While the romance itself is beautiful, the spice would have been better left out. The story is very good without it and the random interjections of overly sexual sentences, not even full moments, is jarring and absolutely unnecessary. luckily, most spicy scenes can just be skipped without losing anything at all, which truly shows how unnecessary they are. The beautiful love story, the amazing tale of heroism, and the epic battle are good and the spice is useless and a waste of pages.

Veil Walker was so good! This is typically not my genre of book to ever read but I'm so glad I picked it up!! What a journey these characters took me on! I laughed, I cried, I was on the edge of my seat and I was gasping at the revelations that were made throughout the book! It's an epic love story set in the modern world with secret magic and adventure to not only save the world and each other but ultimately to save themselves. I could not recommend this enough! The author even throws in some good spice without making it overwhelm the story in any way. So many elements thrown in to make this such a well rounded book for anyone who picks it up! Action, adventure, love, self realization and family dilemmas all in one! So good!! Can't wait for the next one!!

This urban romantasy was easy to read and to enjoy. You can tell the author did her research with a lot of the Celtic/Druid mythology as it is woven throughout the novel. Kira and Owen’s story was written so well and I loved the way they brought out the best in each other. I wasn’t sure what to expect at first with this read but I easily fell in love with the story, the elemental magic, and the characters. The way they grow through their grief and loss and trauma while working together is beautiful. I am ready for the next Druid Chronicles!

Thankful for Brenda and The Space Network for the opportunity to read and review this novel!

4/5⭐️

Advance copy received from the SPACE Network

What an interesting concept! I don’t feel like Druid magic is as heavily focused on in romantasy so this was a refreshing change of pace. Owen is so swoon worthy, and I liked Kira having complexities between strength and fear.

The pacing was a little uneven in this and it was definitely a fast burn. It threw me a little bit when the Druid magic was introduced and everyone just nodded their heads and accepted - I probably would’ve needed more than a minute to accept that. But overall a great read!

This definitely is more a romance story with a a fantasy side to it, perfect for readers looking for that.
The main characters meet very early in the story, no instant lust yet, but it doesn't take long for that to start brewing.
The underlying story of the magical side of the world gets explained very fast and could maybe use some more depth. The side characters do add to the main story, but the MC's remain the focus.
The FMC is very hesitant at the beginning but does weaken in her resolve (and knees) for the very loyal MMC.

🌶🌶🌶 - Spice starts of slow, but evolves along with the story

Thank you to SPACE and the author for the ARC of this book.

First, I’d like to say that the first part of the book had me intrigued and excited for where it would go. From there, I felt like the pacing was a bit sporadic, and things in the story just…happened. It’s hard to describe. While the story and premise was interesting, this wasn’t a hit for me. That said, if you’re into druids, faster burn/insta-love, and don’t mind more minimal world building, this one might be for you!

This is such a cute story 🥰 I loved the tension, slow burn, and chemistry between Kira and Owen. All of the characters pull you in and keep you invested!
The story itself (without spoilers!) is a great dip into fantasy and keeps you needing more! There was always something happening that had you wanting to keep reading!
The last 20% of this book was sooo addictive! The twists! There was a few throughout the book that I never would have seen it ending the way it did! Loved it!

I went on a JOURNEY with this book! Between nonstop action, plot twists, a swoon-worthy MMC, and then ripping my heart out at numerous points, I never knew what to expect next. The emotional devastation was so real. I loved how this felt unlike anything else I'd ever read in urban fantasy romance with a unique, druid-based magic system. I'm eager to see what comes next in this world!

Thank you to the author for allowing me to read this early!

I truly enjoyed every minute of this book. The slow burn was slow and it was romantic. I enjoyed the banter between not just the fmc and mmc but all the characters. The plot twists were great some things were easily figured out but others were not. What I loved most about the book was the fmc and mmc both had trauma and doubts and worked through them all while in the midst of fighting a unknown villain. Along with the characters growth, found family and reconciliation of blood family. Fun action packed realistic characters and magic/"portal". Can't wait for the next part of the trilogy.
