There are two types of new those satisfied with their low-cost point-and-shoot cameras, and those more enthusiastic photographers who recognize the limitations of low-cost equipment and want to improve their pictures. No longer satisfied with simple snapshots, the enthusiast moves up to a more complex digital camera-one with interchangeable lenses and manual controls-to satisfy their artistic urge. Assuming little to no knowledge of photographic terms, techniques, or technology, Beyond Point-And-Shoot is intended to help smooth the transition from photographic newbie to "real" photographer who is experienced, in-control, and passionate about their craft. Author Darrell Young explores various types of interchangeable-lens cameras, focusing on those with larger imaging sensors, such as digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. Learn how to get the most out of your camera's automatic and semi-automatic exposure modes, as well as how to move beyond those modes and take full, manual control of your camera. Watch your photography improve as you discover how to apply important photographic principles, such as depth of field, white balance, and metering. With this newfound knowledge you'll move beyond point-and-shoot and begin taking truly great photographs.Other topics

Enjoyed his book on nikon 610, he makes reference in his 610 book to the "more in depth understanding" I bought the book thinking (wrongly) that it would gie me a greater understanding. It all the same stuff as his nikon 610 bok, even the same text and images used. What a waste of my money ! I wish I could return this book and get my money back. Don't make the same mistake as me
Excellent book for the person moving into the “enthusiast” class of photographer. He explains in clear, easy to understand language, the key concepts that (in the past) I have found quite complex and overly technical.
The book was published in 2012 and there have been advances which I’d love to hear his take on.
This is good book for beginning photographers. It explains a lot of the jargon with easy to understand examples so that you can go on to reading the more complicated photo book. I read the Kindle version, which had some formatting issues: I didn't like how the illustrations and figures were many times a couple pages away from the text. Read this on the kindle app, not the e-ink kindle- you will get more out of the photos used to illustrate the author's points.
Overall this is a good book. I would recommend it to those interested in photography and haven't a clue where to start. I would also recommend it to those who want to go beyond point and shoot, but don't understand all the jargon. Great for learning the basics.
Finally finished this book. It took so long I will need to re-read it because I forgot some of the elements of DSLR photography. However, it is an excellent book so I will not mind. The author does a excellent job explaining basic concepts of digital photography to people with no idea what basic photography terms mean. The book lived up to the reviews and I am glad it is in my library.
