the tragic love story of a sad girl and a dead boy who must work together to find his killer amid heartbreak, mystery, and learning that perhaps death is not the end.
Picture this: it's 2014, you're a teenager obsessed with One Direction, you stumble upon a fanfiction website called Wattpad and you discover a user called Seasidestyles...the rest is history.
In all seriousness though I am so lucky that I got to read this absolute masterpiece in real time as it was getting published!!!! I have never loved a fanfic more than I have loved Phantom and I can say this with full ass confidence 😭😭 This story is beautiful, heart-breaking and mysterious all in one and it is absolute perfection. Reading this 11 years later as a full fledged adult I wasn't sure if this story would still be as good as I remembered it being when I was 15 but holy shittttt I loved this with my whole ass heart 🥹
"You are the product of my long term and overwhelming adoration."
I mean this shit is poetic as fuck I will literally cry every single time I read it!!! There were several moments this had me in actual tears as I was reading and I'm so thankful that somebody resposted this story online after Seasidestyles went MIA (where are you Tess? We miss you...) This is genuinely just as good as any published romance or paranormal suspense so pleaseeeee do yourself a favor and read this fic immediately so we can cry together 🥹🥹
This obviously not my first time reading Tess' works, so I already knew I could expect a great story.
However, Phantom surpassed my expectations. The book is a superb masterpiece. I LOVED IT WITH ALL MY HEART.
The book is basically about Jane and her phantom friend, Harry. Jane's parents decide it's best to move away from California once Jane tries to commit suicide. They move to Castle Hill, a small and eerie town with tons of skeletons hidden in its closet. Honestly, the book is a mixture of Pretty Little Liars, Skins and the recent Netflix hit Riverdale.
Jane's family happens to move into Harry's old house, of course, it is unknown to them that a tragic murder occurred in the house. Jane has to be one of my favorite characters so far. She is so dark and negative, you can practically feel her dark rays of negativity oozing from the screen. Jane is reluctant about the whole situation, and she basically hates Castle Hill. No questions asked, she just does.
This is when she meets Harry. At first, she thinks of him as an intruder, later on, she realizes he is truly a ghost. This is when the book turns a little into the famous book ¿Quién mató a Alex? (Who Killed Alex?) which is a YA Spanish novel about a boy who gets murdered and his spirit joins forces with a girl who attended his school (Hannah) in order to catch his murderer.
It's the same thing going on in Phantom.
Harry's spirit, who has been restless since it still has 'pending matters', teams up with Jane, asking for her help to find out who murdered him and give his family peace at last.
The book has a mixture of everything. It's a sweet and tender story about first loves, yet at the same time, there is a gruesomely dark mystery hanging over their heads. At one point in the story, literally, anybody could have killed Harry. Oh and also, how can we forget the fact that Harry is constantly making terrible yet cheeky jokes on behalf of his death and current state? *sigh*
I think that the part that upset me the most was the fact that Harry was dead and there was nothing Rose could to about it. I mean, they were star-crossed lovers from the beginning. Their love was not meant to be :( (I mean, at one point they say the words 'I love you' are overused, so they make up their own version of it "you are the unchanging subject of my unmovable affection" or something like that. IT'S SWEET, OK?)
And finally, the ending. Wow. It did blow my head. I was honestly expecting everything but that. Literally.
Point is, Phantom is a great story that definitely left me crying!
Lord this book was the best book I've ever read, like nothing will ever compare to this book. I've read this book like over 4o times the obsession I have with it. Thank you Tess for writing this book, we miss you so much come back.
This was such an amazing story and I literally have not found another book (fanfic or novel) that has a similar premise. The ending was so poetic and well done; it had closure but left you wondering with a grin on your face.
omg this is on goodreads wow, the nostalgia!!!! my all time fave harry fic!! seasidestyles.. i'm still thinking about you hun i hope you're doing alright and i still hate u for not finishing this (kidding)
One of favorite Harry fics out there. Great plot, very intriguing. I never wanted to stop reading it and was eagerly awaiting each update. The ending leaves you with many questions though.
