I have been anxiously awaiting Power Exchange since it was announced, and let me tell you, Meagan Brandy did NOT disappoint! This is a high school romance, so if angsty teenage drama and pettiness aren't your thing, you might want to move along. But if you love all the drama, the tension, and the characters who make you want to shake some sense into them, buckle up and hang on because this is one fun, twisty ride that went by WAY too fast. I keep thinking I need to read just a little more to see what happens next, only to remember that I finished this first book and the next book isn't out yet. Ugh. The struggle is real.
One important thing to know going in is that this is NOT a why choose romance. There is a clear romantic interest between Sin and one of the Nash brothers. But here's your warning: while Sinclair Brighton only has heart eyes for one, you might find yourself falling for all three of them. Just saying.
Sin is forced to leave the big city behind and move into her estranged father's mansion in Russette, a tiny mountain town in the middle of nowhere, Utah. And waiting for her there are her stepbrothers, the Nash boys: Rook, Brooks, and Dallas. Let's just say they don't exactly roll out the welcome mat. These boys run the town, and everything they do seems calculated. They're ruthless, they're full of red flags, and they make it very clear that Sin isn't welcome in their world. Naturally, Sin has a few of her own ideas.
At first, you think you know exactly who these characters are. You've got your stereotypical high schoolers, and I see you, mean girls. But the more I uncovered, the more I realized I'd barely scratched the surface of our main characters. And I was HERE to uncover all the things! I love a heroine with hidden depths, and Sin definitely has them. She's not the troubled good girl princess everyone seems to think she is, and I loved seeing her prove that there's a whole lot more to her than meets the eye. Sometimes it's not about being the strongest, but about being the wisest and knowing when to back down and when to stand your ground. Sin knows the difference, and I was here for it.
And then there's Rook. Gah. The exchanged stares between him and Sin are always edged with challenge, defiance, and just enough romantic tension to keep things interesting. He's foreboding, unpredictable, and absolutely covered in red flags, and somehow he still manages to make Sin melt. I love a bookish man with a few red flags. IN BOOKS, ladies. Let's be clear about that. Of course, Rook has to go and intentionally hurt my girl Sin, which makes me a little mad at him. What he does next determines whether I stay mad, and honestly, it could go either way. He's keeping me on my toes, and I'm not complaining... much. Meagan Brandy is a bit of a tease with this book, and honestly, so is Rook.
I also loved the dynamic between the Nash boys. They're an undivided unit with a fierce, almost unshakable loyalty to one another, and there's clearly so much more going on beneath the surface. Sin is trying to figure out where she fits into their world, and she does... kind of. Olivia, her stepmother, at least tries to make Sin feel welcome, but there are still SO many questions, especially when it comes to Sin's father, Hal Brighton. Who is this man, really? Sin barely knows him, and neither do we. I need answers, and I can't wait to start piecing everything together.
And once the suspense gets suspense-ing, I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. What starts as an angsty, tension-filled high school romance keeps revealing more layers, more secrets, and more reasons to keep turning those pages.
And THAT ENDING?!? I'm not okay. Not even a little bit. I've been stewing over those final pages ever since I read the last sentence. I have SO many questions. I need the next book yesterday because I cannot be left here with all these thoughts and worries and no answers!
Overall, I really loved this one. The angst, the tension, the hidden depths, the dangerous boys, and all those secrets had me completely hooked. I can't wait to see where Meagan Brandy takes this series next. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll just be over here impatiently waiting for the next book and trying to come to terms with that cliffhanger.
